thanks bzengo, it's hard getting excited about it because of world affairs, but I love the oscars. I am watching them now. I thought Steve Martin was funny and did a good job with the intro.

I feel strange watching the Academy Awards with all thats going on right now. It is however a welcome change and relief to what I've been watching these past few days.

I'm glad that Catherine Zeta-Jones won. As pregnant as she is right now, she is still a very beautiful woman and was awesome in that movie. A well deserved award. Bravo to her and the rest of the cast.

Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role: Adrien Brody in The Pianist

Weeeeee! I love it when deserving nominees walk away with the prize. Luckily Academy voters didn't get caught up in the whole 'About Schimdt' hype. Although, Jack was very adept in his performance, Adrien's role was much more challenging. Jack was essentially playing himself and although he is good at it, it can hardly be called acting.

And I just need to say... can I be Catherine Zeta Jones when I grow up? She is one lovely, stunning woman.

Wow. I'm surprised by how many awards were given to the people/pictures I was rooting for.

Big yay for Spirited Away! I think I would have hit my head against a wall a few hundred times if Spirit had gotten it. All of you Lilo & Stitch fans must be disappointed. Did any of you even see Spirited Away? It's one of the weirdest films I've ever seen. My only gripe with it were mistakes in the translation that made it seem like the story was going places that it really wasn't supposed to.

weird, i used to be soooooo into the oscars while growing up but now i could care less. i cant remember the last time i watched the telecast in full or live (i began to tape and fast foward but not even that anymore).

i did happen to see michael moore win tonight though and as much as i was blown away (no pun inteneded) by bowling for columbine and agree it deserved the recognition i dont like people making political statements like that on an award show. he should make a movie if he feels so strongly about bush and all that jazz. he probaly will and blame it on GM. lol.. but that is certainly a film that leaves you thinking about it. It didn't actually emotionally hit me until a few days later, til then i was just in awe. glad he won for this film.

Michael Moore got a standing ovation when his name was read out. He then used his acceptance speech to make some salient points about President Bush and the war itself. That was when the majority of the audience began booing. Apparently he'd been warned beforehand not to make this kind of speech but he still did anyway. I guess he felt that seeing as millions of people all over the world were watching, this was his chance to speak his mind. Fair play to him for having the courage to do just that.

On another note; I know this will be unpopular, but those who have met me in kittenchat won't be surprised by this...

I can't stand Catherine Zeta Jones. Just. Can't. Stand. Her.

And this is what happens when you have no class and marry into a lot of money. Her talent is unmistakeable, although I'm sorry to say that I haven't seen it onscreen or stage. If you know what I mean. Humph. I really didn't want her to win. My money was on Kathy Bates.

I was pleased for Nicole though; she's a fantastic actress and really underrated. So good on her.

High point of the whole thing though - how freakin' hot is Susan Sarandon???? My god, that woman gets better with every passing year.

I have to say, I thought this year's Oscars was actually pretty good. Respectful, decent. And for the most part, the awards were given to deserving people. I

I cant believe Gangs of New York didnt get anything. At the very least, U2 deserved a win for their Gangs song. It was the best song, IMO.

Cathrine Zeta-Jones won :) !! She's just plain cool. She isnt fake, she seems really genuine, she's beautiful and looked great in Chicago. Too bad Queen Latifah and her couldnt both win, though

4 Canadians got Oscars :) mainly for stuff on Chicago, which was ironically filmed in Toronto, the the 1st (or 5th?) Oscar was a tech award for an Ontario effects company.

Good for Micheal Moore. He did what he set out to do, which is good: he says what needs to be said, what a lot of people are thinking but no one is saying.

Nowhere In Africa won...I have heard that it is a really deserving, well-done film. Does anyone know when it is coming out on video? All I have around me are huge chain movie theatres and one showed it for a day. Just one day!

I think the Oscars where okay to have, without the total glitz and shallow crap that it usually has. The dresses were actually better this year, I think, probably because the actresses had to find stuff that was beautiful but dignified. And Micheal Moore, among others, reminded us that there ARE bigger issues going on.

I am usually thoroughly disappointed in the Oscar picks - but this year I was pleasantly surprised. Adrian Brody won - I can't believe it - I thought for sure he'd get robbed - but he won - I am soooo happy - and his speech was so spot on - and he kissed Halle Berry (yum).

I did wait on the edge of my seat for Michael Moore to win - just for his speech. Anyone who has followed his career even a little would be able to know that he was going to speak his mind.

I haven't watched the Oscars in a few years as I've felt that more and more they have become a big media blitz by the big production companies, but this year a friend asked me to watch so I caved. I'm so glad I did. After a weekend of politics it was a nice break.

I watched from start to finish as I do every year. Without all the glitz and who ha of the red carpet entrance, I thought the show was much better. I really hate when I see the celebs being interviewed by people like Joan Rivers and she asks, "Who are you wearing tonight?"

I'm glad Adrien Brody and Nicole Kidman won. After watching all the other award shows like the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild, I really thought that Renee Zellwieger had it in the bag. Cause the Golden Globes are kind of a prelude to the Oscars.

Steve Martin was pretty good as a host but I still liked when Whoopie Goldberg hosted. I was excited that Mickey Mouse was a presenter. God, I love that Mouse!!! But I'm just a tart I guess. And I agree with Ruth that Susan Sarandon gets hotter every year.

I never really get into any awards shows...my grandfather was all excited about it this year because he loved Chicago...and I think he has a little bit of a crush on Rene ^_~ So of course he had it on in the living room, I came out to watch Catherina Zeta-Jones' and Queen Latifa's performance....and I must agree with my girlfriend...

...That woman looks SO gorgeous when she is pregnant. A womans body is normaly beautiful, but when they are pregnant they fill out, and they get all full and glowing....she just radiated beauty. Mmmm...(can we tell she is one of my favorite actresses?)

A lot of movies that won/were nominated have had me interested for a long time now...I really must get around to seeing them. Especially bowling for columbine....I've only seen bits and peices of that. My lack of any knowledge about a lot of the movies that won is what keeps me from being too excited or dissapointed..Guess I'll just have to form my opinions in a few month ^_^

I was very pleased that Chris Cooper and Michael Moore won -they both really deserved it. Cooper is such an underrated actor - he's been around for ages, but never really got the recognition he deserves until now. I wish Julianne Moore had won in the supporting actress category, though - she really deserved it. And I wish The Hours had won Best Picture - don't get me wrong, I didn't think Chicago was bad, it was very entertaining, but people probably won't remember it in 10 years' time, whereas they'll remember The Hours. (That's my theory anyway...) I mean, Braveheart also won Best Picture, it was also entertaining, but several years down the line, it certainly doesn't look like a great film. (And don't even get me started on Titanic, possibly the worst film ever to win Best Picture.)

And how much of a scandal was it that City of God didn't even get nominated for Best Foreign Language Film? Damn the stupid Brazilian Oscar committee for not putting it forward. I'm glad Almodavar won for Best Original Screenplay, though it would have been entertaining to see Charlie Kaufman's speech - or if he'd hired Nicolas Cage to stand in for him - had Adaptation won.

I'm not going to get to see the awards till the highlights show is on British TV tonight, so I'll probably post in this thread again later.

The Oscars

Postby Thespia » Mon Mar 24, 2003 9:25 am

I was also pleasantly surprised at the Oscars this year. Maybe because the nominees were all interesting, I don't know, I think that was the best ceremony in years, despite all the serious world affairs developing. Loved Steve Martin.

Tyche, I absolutely agree with you; I liked 'Chicago' for what it is, an entertainment piece. 'The Hours' is something else, it's amazing! And I recommend Michael Cunningham's book for everyone who liked the movie and hasn't read it. I was pretty disappointed because it didn't win best adapted screenplay; David Hare's adaptation was very, very good.

One thing that bothered me, though, was Polanski's winning best directing; I mean, on one side, I think he's a really great director and all ('Rosemary's Baby', 'Chinatown', how couldn't I?); but, on the other, it bugs me that people say that this award 'redeems' him in any way (that was exactly what I heard on E!, after the show). If I shpould not mix the two things, they shouldn't either. What Polanski did was horrible, it wasn't 'just' statutory rape; it was rape. Non-consensual sex, independent of age. And that cannot be 'redeemed' by an Oscar. Even in this 'sociedade do espetáculo' we live in.

But all in all, it was a ceremony to remember.

Yes the polanski win was disturbing especially with the standing ovation. He should come here and face the judicial system before anyone can think of "redemption."

I actually preferred the low-key affair of the Oscars this year. Without the glitz and the scmaltz it felt like a proper awards show (if such an animal exists).

For the first time ever, there really wasnt a clear winner, even Chicago didn't reap that many awards.

However, full marks to Michael Moore, not only for his win which he thoroughly deserved, but also his speech which was spot on.

Steve Martin was excellent as a host and maybe next year, if we are back to "normal" for the Oscars, he can do it again.

Next year, Lord of the Rings:The Return of the King is gona sweep it all. It will win best film and best director, I say that now without hesitation.

Thought for the Day: Aly Hannigan, Best Actress for American Pie 3: WHY NOT??

I haven't seen the whole show but I happened to zap while Michael Moore won. I was really glad because I think Bowling For Columbine was well done. That movie made me kinda proud to be canadian. Moore did the speech he wanted to but I think he got cut.. well they started the music before he was done to force him to get out...! Anyway the documentary was great and I hope it made some people think about some issues.

Very happy for Nicole Kidman, but I would have liked to see "The Hours" walk away with a few more. Ah well. The winners of the actor/actress categories overall did not impress me much this year. Heh, I wondered how long it was going to take Ruth to say something about Catherine Zeta Jones:lol

I watched the Oscars with some friends, and when Best Documentary came up everyone got very quiet. When Micheal Moore won a cheer went up. When he gave his speech everyone I know was just going "Expected that". I have incredible respect for Moore, after reading his book and seeing his movie, its an easy thing to do.

Random Question: How do you "glam down" the Oscars??? Its the Oscars! Red carpet or not, its the biggest Hollywood event of the year. I'll admit to the Oscars bring "glammed down" when someone accepts an award in jeans.

The Oscars. Steve Martin is really funny. _Really_ funny.

But I had a gripe. Now, I haven't seen the Pianist, and I'm sure it had a wonderful screenplay. However, Adaptation is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I honestly think Kaufman deserved Adapted Screenplay. And I wanted to see the Donald gag I'm sure he and Nic Cage worked out. Has anyone seen Spirited Away? I hear it's excellent.

And how disturbing is it that the audience give a rapist a standing ovation (disclaimer: I think Polanski is an excellent director) and boo Michael Moore for dissing Bush? I mean, if you vote for Michael Moore, you know he's going to say something political. It's not a big secret that he isn't a big fan of Bush...
