Why we don't (or do) like the Yuuzhan Vong - Star Wars EU

Why we don't (or do) like the Yuuzhan Vong - Star Wars EU

Postby Infinite Astronaut » Thu Feb 19, 2004 5:53 pm

I thought there should be a thread discussing the Star Wars expanded universe. Even though they are technically books (or comics), they are based off the Star Wars movies, so I though here was the place to put this thread.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Did this topic just jet in from Mars? I love the books written about what happens after (or before or during) Return of the Jedi. Are there any fellow geeks out there?

Oooooo, I'm a fellow geek! But I kinda stopped reading after Dark Journey. The local library is horrible at acquiring new books, ya know? Blegh. A TOTAL Jaina fan here! :D

My favourite character in the Star Wars EU (and my favourite character completely) is Mara Jade. She is so cool. If they were to make a sequel to the original trilogy (not that there's much chance of that), I reckon that Alyson Hannigan would be a great choice to play her.

My second favourite character is Mace Windu.

Although it doesn't feature either of them, I liked the "Dark Empire" comics (in which a clone of the Emperor is created).

Finally, I rather like the Yuuzhan Vong. I think that they are a formiddable foe and a good replacement for the Empire.

I'm a huge fan of the Star Wars Movies (the original ones not those crappy arse prequel things which are only good to watch Natalie Portman in action) but I have to admit I havent read much in the way of post RotJ literature.

I've read the Timothy Zahn books, quite a while ago now but I enjoyed them.

The thing I most enjoy about the SW universe is that, like Star Trek, there is so much scope to explore. It's comprehensive and detailed and fascinating. I used to roleplay a character at a Star Wars roleplaying site and I spent many hours doing research on every aspect of the SW EU before I even wrote a post. Which is probably why I don't have the time to roleplay there anymore!

I think this thread has inspired me to seek out more SW books, I'll report back when I have more of an opinion to add :hmm

I was a huge star wars fan - but the "passion" has kinda dulled after Attack of the Clones.

I have every book pretty much up until the "jedi academy" series, and quite enjoyed the x-wing series. But I think the first trilogy that Timothy Zahn wrote is definitely the best.

I have to admit that this thread has sparked my interest again, I might have to re-read several of the books again, and maybe look for some new ones.

I'm shocked and dismayed that is has taken me this long to reply in this thread!

As my name also implies, I am indeed a Star Wars fan. However, I have not been able to appreciate the EU as much as many other fans have. I guess you could say I am a Star Wars snob.

The original trilogy is by far the best, and I do have an appreciation for the prequels (although they pale in comparison to the originals, in my opinion). Because of my deep seated feelings about that, the only EU books I really liked were the Timothy Zahn Dark Force trilogy, as many have mentioned before me. They seem to be the only ones that have captured the true Star Wars vibe for me. I read the Kevin J. Anderson Jedi Academy trilogy, and I think that really ruined me. I stumbled through The Courtship of Princess Leia and Shadows of the Empire. I tried. I really did. (I did enjoy the Dark Horse comic series, although I have not read every single "episode".)

My SW reading has indeed trailed off after the Courtship disaster, but once in while I'll find myself drawn to one of the newer releases, thinking to myself, "maybe I should give them another chance." But, with school, social life, and beautiful girlfriend, I really don't have that much time for recreational reading. So I guess I'll just have to live vicariously through my friends who have not abandoned the EU.
