I have and I have to say it might one of the best dramas on TV. TV guide said it was the best show on TV and Entertainment Weekly (i think it was them) said this is the best thing to happen to Tuesday nights in years!
So what is it?
Well here are a couple of links.
The show, currently in Season 2. www.fxnetworks.com/shows/.../main.html
and Season 1 on DVD. www.warnervideo.com/niptuck/

It deals with the lives of two Miami based plastic surgeons Christian Troy (Julian McMahon, "Cole" from Charmed) and Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh). We get to see the lives of Sean's wife Julia (Joely Richardson) and their two kids. And Christian's on going addiction to having sex with any woman that walks into his life.
Course Sean is middle aged wreck and Christian is a pig. But the situations they are in you can actually feel for them. They try to do what is right or what is best, they just don't always know how. Not that they are hopeless flawed, they seem, human.
Among other things it stars Roma Maffia as "Liz Cruz". She is the anaesthesiologist and an open lesbian. What I like is she is often the voice of reason to the other two. Despite their constant fighting I do get that there is a general sense of friendship between her and Dr. Troy. Course Roma was on "Profiler" with Julian McMahon back in the 90's so it could also be a reflection of their real-life friendship.
Course there is the cliché that Liz is a single lesbian. She had a long time girlfriend, but she broke up with her in the first episode.
To date they have been very good with a lot of issues that we talk about here.
When Matt's (Sean's teenage son) girlfriend came out as gay I felt it was handled well. Especially in light of her parents accidentally find out from a well-meaning but clueless Julia.
The episodes dealing with a male to female transgender Sophia Lopez were actually some of the best I have seen on the subject for a fictional drama. Sean and Julia both have to confront their own biases and prejudices in different ways. Sean at first not wanting to treat her and then seeing how people in her community are treated and Julia watching how Sophia is treated not as a person, but a thing really.
They have dealt with depression due to weight, or being older, and a number of adult topics very deftly. They have dealt with religion without being preachy or patronizing (Christian is a fallen Catholic, Matt has been having a crisis of faith so to speak), race (Christian’s son is mixed race), and culture (Sean is made fun of for being the only person in Miami that doesn’t speak Spanish). They also dealt with female genital mutilation and the effects it had not just on this woman’s body but her soul.
Currently Christian is actually showing growth while trying to adopt the son of a former girlfriend that he feels is his. Course he knows that biologically this child can’t be (the actual father is African American) but it has been nice to see the growth and change in this character this way.
Not that they don't occasionally screw it up, but I give the writers an A for effort. It is intelligent, never patronizes you and doesn’t play needless on your emotions for effect.
Course there are gratuitous scenes surgery and of Sean’s and Christian’s asses time to time (your pick on which one is more tasteless).
It's on Tuesdays on FX at 10:00pm E/P and 9:00pm Central.

My wife: Fine, as long as you don't bring home some little red-head.
). Liz just seems like a stereotype of the "humorless dyke." If she's really as disgusted w/ Doctors Sean and Christian, why the heck doesn't she leave? I think her very being there, is to serve the writers' need for a chorus (i.e. she's not really a character in her own right). Sophia just seemed more like a not-especially-informed-but-look-how-kewl-we-are! writer's idea of a transwoman---not a real one (again, stereotype, not actual character).
