Nip/Tuck

Has anyone been watching this show?

I have and I have to say it might one of the best dramas on TV. TV guide said it was the best show on TV and Entertainment Weekly (i think it was them) said this is the best thing to happen to Tuesday nights in years! ;)

So what is it?

Well here are a couple of links.

The show, currently in Season 2. www.fxnetworks.com/shows/.../main.html

and Season 1 on DVD. www.warnervideo.com/niptuck/

IMDB www.imdb.com/title/tt0361217/combined

It deals with the lives of two Miami based plastic surgeons Christian Troy (Julian McMahon, "Cole" from Charmed) and Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh). We get to see the lives of Sean's wife Julia (Joely Richardson) and their two kids. And Christian's on going addiction to having sex with any woman that walks into his life.

Course Sean is middle aged wreck and Christian is a pig. But the situations they are in you can actually feel for them. They try to do what is right or what is best, they just don't always know how. Not that they are hopeless flawed, they seem, human.

Among other things it stars Roma Maffia as "Liz Cruz". She is the anaesthesiologist and an open lesbian. What I like is she is often the voice of reason to the other two. Despite their constant fighting I do get that there is a general sense of friendship between her and Dr. Troy. Course Roma was on "Profiler" with Julian McMahon back in the 90's so it could also be a reflection of their real-life friendship.

Course there is the cliché that Liz is a single lesbian. She had a long time girlfriend, but she broke up with her in the first episode.

To date they have been very good with a lot of issues that we talk about here.

When Matt's (Sean's teenage son) girlfriend came out as gay I felt it was handled well. Especially in light of her parents accidentally find out from a well-meaning but clueless Julia.

The episodes dealing with a male to female transgender Sophia Lopez were actually some of the best I have seen on the subject for a fictional drama. Sean and Julia both have to confront their own biases and prejudices in different ways. Sean at first not wanting to treat her and then seeing how people in her community are treated and Julia watching how Sophia is treated not as a person, but a thing really.

They have dealt with depression due to weight, or being older, and a number of adult topics very deftly. They have dealt with religion without being preachy or patronizing (Christian is a fallen Catholic, Matt has been having a crisis of faith so to speak), race (Christian’s son is mixed race), and culture (Sean is made fun of for being the only person in Miami that doesn’t speak Spanish). They also dealt with female genital mutilation and the effects it had not just on this woman’s body but her soul.

Currently Christian is actually showing growth while trying to adopt the son of a former girlfriend that he feels is his. Course he knows that biologically this child can’t be (the actual father is African American) but it has been nice to see the growth and change in this character this way.

Not that they don't occasionally screw it up, but I give the writers an A for effort. It is intelligent, never patronizes you and doesn’t play needless on your emotions for effect.

Course there are gratuitous scenes surgery and of Sean’s and Christian’s asses time to time (your pick on which one is more tasteless).

It's on Tuesdays on FX at 10:00pm E/P and 9:00pm Central.

You know, I'd been chasing this show since last season, when I heard about the lesbian characters and all the general hype it had gotten, including losing some advertisers due to action by the PTC. Never could catch it, till last week.

I have to say I sort've expected more. It was definitely funny much of the time, and disturbing, two traits I enjoy in my programming. The really goofy parts were...wait, can I discuss it yet? Crap. I forget all the spoiler rules.

Well, it was a little cheesy when it tried to be very serious and emotional ("You're your best lover", or something to that effect). I'm still gonna tune in tonight. I'm hoping I just caught one of the weaker eps.

I think this show is rather like a car wreck (driving past): often disgusting (and I'm *not* talking the surgery scenes), yet I can't look away.

It's remarkably well-done . . . and I don't like a single character on it. All of 'em seem SO self-involved (not just Dr. Troy, though he was the textbook example, at least until son Wilbur---named for the Wright brother or the pig? ;) ---came along).

I *want* to like Julia. Joely Richardson is so outstanding---a better actress than sis Miranda, IMO: more of mom's---Vanessa Redgrave, who guest starred as Julia's mom this year---acting chops! But I just can't (like the character): so, you got a long-time thing for Bad Boy Doc Troy? Deal w/ it already!

I could almost like Doctor Sean . . . but he's so frickin' clueless (when he's not cheating, as well: though he and Julia did make it through that).

I have mixed feelings about the two queer characters mentioned (anaesthesiologist Doctor Liz and transwoman Sophia) . . . especially when the two of them had an affair (which I felt the writers did "because we can" :happy ). Liz just seems like a stereotype of the "humorless dyke." If she's really as disgusted w/ Doctors Sean and Christian, why the heck doesn't she leave? I think her very being there, is to serve the writers' need for a chorus (i.e. she's not really a character in her own right). Sophia just seemed more like a not-especially-informed-but-look-how-kewl-we-are! writer's idea of a transwoman---not a real one (again, stereotype, not actual character).

The son, Matt, just bothers me: the actor isn't very good, and he looks absolutely *nothing* like any of his putative parents (IIRC, it's never been revealed whether Sean or Christian is his father. Julia went for a DNA test, but we weren't shown the answer. Needless to say, Sean has no idea that there's any doubt about Matt's paternity).

Lots of the plot points (drug dealers/users, hit-n-run victim's amnesia, many wacko/suicidal patients, sex addiction---complete w/ multiple-partner scenes) seem like the stuff of soap opera (w/ every tittilating twist thrown in gratuitously).

In certain ways, it reminds me of Six Feet Under . . . only there, the weirdness of the characters just seems human, and you care about them. Nip/Tuck is more like "Weird Miamians-ala-Stepford" (i.e. insane robots) and I just don't. Misanthropic: that's what it is.

GG And yet, thus far, I haven't been able to give up on it. Maybe if I actually had pricey HBO, and could watch "Six Feet" regularly! :hmm Out

I must agree, I practically cannot stand any of the characters on the show, yet I love them at the same time. Its a great show that you just cant seem to pull away from, but you have no idea why, lol.

My guess is that somwwhere during this season, Matt's real father will be revealed stirring up more drama than usual on the show (does it really need anymore?;) )

Saw all the first series. The second hasn't started here yet but I have to agree! The characters can be hated and loved at the same time. Such an addictive series! :lol :cry

It's really amazing that this carwreck (in one recent ep, literally) of a series is on free cable (what w/ the language, and nudity, and fairly graphic sex and all). :jaw

I keep telling myself to quit watching it . . . and then I watch it again. The ep last week, featuring the conjoined Chappelle twins, was a perfect example: the (admittedly) voluntary exploitation there, not to mention the 3-way that Docs Macnamara and Troy had w/ the prostitute, pretending she was their mutual love, (Sean's now estranged wife, Julia). Though possibly, last week's, w/ the stigmatic and abusive nun, and Anaesthetist Liz's pregnancy, and then abortion, was even worse (not to mention Sean going predictably ballistic upon learning that Christian is the bio father of Sean's son). :puke

GG I really dislike it. So why do I keep watching? Any amateur Kitten shrinks out there? :confused Out

Nip/Tuck is addictive. I remember seeing the ad's on Sky One thinking 'mm not bad' then I watched it, spending some time thinking 'hey that the actor who play Cole in Charmed, whodda thunk it' then actually thought the plot was one of the coolest drama's I'd seen so far.

I agree that it's kinda graphic, but at hte same time would you expect a drama about a sex addicted plastice surgoen working with his friend who has a rocky relationship?

Anyway, gud series, will keep watching it, 'nuff said, I think...

Is anyone watching the new season with Portia? I think she looks gorgeous, although way too similar looking to Joely Richardson to make them a believable couple (not that anything on Nip/Tuck is supposed tobe believable!), still lesbian hotness on the small screen is to be encouraged (btw: Joely Richardson - someone give that woman a hamburger!)

An article on Portia on Nip/Tuck in USA Today.
