The Phantom of the Opera

Postby Shinnen » Fri Dec 10, 2004 9:40 am

After working a month on the Phantom of the Opera movie campaign... i finally get to attend to Malaysian Gala Premiere of the movie.

It's a pretty good adaptation from stage to screen. Christine's singing is pretty good for an actor, plus she's one of the sweetest Christines in the many ensembles. The Phantom's singing isn't as strong as it should be... not much omph... but again... i have to say he's the more... handsome... of the past Phantoms, until you remove his mask :p

Our Gala Premiere had our company's staff dressed up all pretty in gowns and stuff... except me and a few others who were working until before the show starts. There were deep red roses shipped in with black ribbons tied to them. Glamourous face masks for the VIP guests. and about 500 goodie bags sponsored by Nestle products.

The show's worth watching if you're a fan of musicals. It's very well done... no fake nipples from Joel Schumacher... lotsa cleavage. Minnie Driver's acting is impressive as Carlotta. If you're not a fan and can't afford to pay premium to watch the stage production... this movie is the way to go. ;)

She's the most amazing girl in the whole world. She's the only girl who makes my heart beat faster and slower at the same time. When I'm not with her, I'm not living. I'm not existing until I can hold her in my arms again.- hence i'm not here now

Emmy Rossum is a trained classical singer. Actually she was a better singer in other movies. Have you seen Songcatcher?

Yes, Butler's Phantom was too handsome and his mask was too small.

I was disappointed little. I didn't like the editing of the movie. Specially the underground lake scene. It was like a half baked music video. But the orchestration was way better than the original one.

Hyo Shin,

thanks for the information about Emmy Rossum. It's no wonder she could sing so well. According to my friend who watched the latest cast in London, Emmy Rossum is much better than the current Christine in the current run of Phantom of the Opera. Unfortunately I haven't seen Songcatcher.

As for the Phantom... maybe they should have considered Josh Groban. He may not be as pretty... but hey... his voice rocks!

It's a nice little independent film and Russum is wonderful in it. BTW, the movie has a happy lesbian couple.

So I'll take it that this is worth seeing then.

I got bitten by a drunk lesbian! Does that mean I'll turn into one?

Well I need to give this a go. I'm a huge fan of the musical and saw it twice: New York and Toronto. I was holding off because of Joel Schumacher who's a director in Hollywood whose work shall we say I don't admire. But like Columbus with Harry Potter, good material can overcome the short comings of the director.

I saw this today. Now I've been involved in amateur and professional theatre for many years and have done everything from lights and sound to stage managing and directing and this is one of my favorite musicals. I've seen it three times, twice here in the States and once in London. With that said, I was a little disappointed in the movie. It was beautifully filmed and the costumes were great, but I felt that the voices were a little thin. I loved Minnie Driver's Carlotta (the acting), she was a hoot. Raoul's American accent threw me off a little. As well as the fact that the Phantom was much older than Christine. I know he's supposed to be older but it seemed to me that he was her father's age. I was surprised at how close Lloyd Weber stayed to the stage production, that was a pleasant surprise. However one thing he added (and I won't go into detail) was telegraphed so heavy handedly that it kind of spoiled it in the end. He also added a couple of things that made me go WTF? One such time was when the Phantom was taking Christine to his liar for the first time. It is a wonderful scene on stage and for the most part it worked beautifully on film, but the director or producer, had a horse waiting (in the building mind you) for Christine to sit on, for maybe four bars of music while the Phantom lead her down into the bowels of the Opera House. It just didn't make sense to me. At times it seemed as if the music was too loud, it drowned out the voices and dialog, especially in the beginning. It was beautifully filmed however. The opening was very well done. I liked how they went from black and white to color. In my opinion some musicals should stay on the stage and this is one of them. You become so much more emotionally involved with them during the stage production. But in defense of the film, it could have been that I had very high expectations due to my love of the stage production. It is worth seeing though. But if I had to grade it I would give it a B, lots of style, but little substance.

LOL! You're right. Surprisingly I liked the direction of this movie for the most part. I almost forgot the other movie he directed.
