SAVED!

Postby Hemiola » Tue Oct 19, 2004 2:43 pm

I have just finished viewing this screamingly funny movie, which I can heartily recommend to all Kittens.:)

The action takes place at "Eagle Christian High", where the pious Mary (Jena Malone) attempts to "save" her boyfriend's soul after he confesses to her (horrors!) that he is gay. She ultimately attempts to "change him back" by having sex with him, which winds up impregnating her, thereby setting off the action of the movie.

Excellent performances also from Mandy Moore (the "Super Christian" of the school:lol ), MacCauley Culkin as her handicapped (but decidedly un-Christian) brother, Mary Louise Parker as her mother, Heather Matarazzo as a member of Moore's "Christian Girl Gang", the "Christian Jewels":rofl , and by the talented young actress (I forget her name *ashamed*) who plays the school's "bad" girl, who also just happens to be Jewish! (She sports one of those fish thingies on her car, except it says "Gefilte" inside it:lol )

This is a splendid antidote to the ravings of some of the more fanatical members of the Christian Right. If you'd like some idea of the "tone" of the film consider this scene:

(Hilary Faye [Mandy Moore's character] throws her bible at Mary and hits her in the back with it and screams)

"My heart is full of the love of Jesus!":laugh :lol :rofl

Mods: feel free to move this if there is an already extant thread:)

I really like Saved and bouight the dvd as soon as it came out. Mandy Moore is so good in it that I forgave her for Chasing Liberty. I was amazed to hear she was cast only a week before filming began, replacing an actress who quit or was fired. It's hard for me to imagine anyone else in the part. The actress who plays the school's "bad girl" is Eva Amurri, and she happens to be Susan Sarandon's daughter.

I loved this movie! As a huge Jena Malone fan I saw it as soon as it hit the theaters. Mandy Moore earns major points from me, MacCauley proves he can actually act and has promise as an indie actor (also check out Party Monster, a flawed but entertaining movie) and Eva Amurri steals the film as the bad-ass, jewish girl and may just have to become my future wife.

Agreed, the movie was really good. I honestly expected something a little better, but it was still really good. The acting was intense and Jena Malone and Mandy Moore alone are reason enough to rent it.

Man do I want to see this movie!

See here's the deal.

So I was watching Donnie Darko the other day for the very first time and was totally blown away by it. So, then of course I went and bought the DVD, cuz I thought it was such a cool movie to watch with my friends later on. A buddy of mine suddenly said: "Hey, that chick kinda reminds me of Alyson." And I was all: "Dude, no way!"

Nevertheless I got curious, so the next day I IMDB'ed Jena Malone and on her filmography I saw Saved! listed and I thought: "Hey! Didn't I see that thread on Genuine Molded Plastic already?" and everyone knows that if Kittens like something, it's bound to get on my list of must things to see eventually.

So yeah, then I went to the Saved!site to watch the trailer and what do I see there...? Jena doing an uncanny, almost perfect Alyson-take!!! (If you watch it, you'll know what I mean... if not, I'm talking about the part where she says: "I'm... not... dating right now") Whhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!! I didn't think anyone could do that, except Alyson herself!

Okay, ahem, sorry for the big monologue, I just had to share this with you guys. Hee!

So now that definitely made me wanna see this movie. Too bad I can't seem to find it anywhere in stores. Oh well, maybe someday. *chuckle* That silly Jena trying to act all Alyson-style... cute, very cute *sigh*

Hi Rocktoddy!:wave

It is very much worth seeing, and if you have a well-stocked video-rental place nearby, they should have it:) .

Incidentally, all fans of Jena Malone might be interested to learn that she has a small (really tiny, about 5 minutes;) ) part in "Cold Mountain": she plays the "ferrywoman" who attempts to row Jude Law and Philip Seymour Hoffman away from danger.

This movie makes me laugh. I will always watch it if I stumble across it channel surfing, though I do own the dvd. Mandy and Jena's commentary is pretty entertaining. I thought everyone was perfectly cast and they were all a joy to watch.

Mandy Moore became a favorite after this one.

Such a funny movie.

It's one of my favorites! There are some really good lessons some people could learn from this movie!!! The casting really was perfect. I can't imagine anyone else in any roles.
