The OC

I should start by saying that I have never watched this show. So why did I start a thread for the show? Glad you asked...

From Yahoo...

SHE'S COMING OUT: So this is how it's done on The O.C. when the ratings start to dip: Marissa comes out as a lesbian! Series creator Josh Schwartz is confirming rumors that Mischa Barton's lovelorn alter ego will fall for another girl in early '05. "Marissa is at a point in her life where she's trying to find herself and her true identity," Schwartz tells Out.com. "There's another character who she really connects with. It's a girl, which is not something Marissa may have anticipated. But she's willing and game to explore and experiment with that." Schwartz denies that the same-sex plot is just a stunt to boost the show's lagging Nielsens (last Thursday's episode hit a series-low 6.5 million viewers). "We cooked it up well before the show ever premiered this year," he says. "We're constantly looking at evolving and growing these characters. And challenging them. They're at that age where they're open to it. It was either that or Oliver's return." There he goes using that dreaded O-word again.

And the interview from Out.com...

The OC’s Queer Twist

In this Out.com exclusive, The OC creator, Josh Schwartz, reveals who is coming out on his sizzling show—and why.

by Jeffrey Epstein

On the Fox drama The OC, Marissa (Mischa Barton) has been through the wringer while looking for Mr. Right: Sexy–but–snobby Luke, brooding Ryan, psychopath Oliver, and gardener D.J. But maybe it’s not Mr. Right she’s looking for. While we’ve been asked not to reveal the “who,” OC creator Josh Schwartz is going on the record to discuss what happens when Marissa—in an episode arc that begins in January—meets Lady Love.

Why was now the right time to do a gay-themed story?

Marissa is at a point in her life where she’s trying to find herself and her true identity. There’s another character who she really connects with. It’s a girl, which is not something Marissa may have anticipated. But she’s willing and game to explore and experiment with that.

Was it your idea?

We were looking to find someone for Marissa to connect with after DJ. Everything we came up with sounded similar to what we’d done. I pitched this idea and thought it would be interesting and show a different side of her.

Traditionally gay storylines on teen shows have dealt with male sexuality—what made you want to do a woman’s story? Why not have Seth explore? He’s been through it all with Summer.

There’s enough people claiming there’s a homosexual subtext between Seth and Ryan, so why make it the text? [Laughs] Seth is so tied to the Summer storyline. He wasn’t really available. Marissa has been trying to find herself and trying different relationships. Many of them are designed to piss her mom off. She seemed willing to go somewhere she never thought she’d go before.

So it’s not to piss off mom?

She believes this is real. She takes it very slowly and very cautiously. When her mom finds out, it’s not done to be explosive. The DJ thing was kind of a bust. She was bored over the summer and she wanted to piss off her mother. It wasn’t resonant and earth-shattering but this relationship is.

Given how Luke’s father coming out was received on the show, will the residents of Orange County respond any better to Marissa?

It’s my experience that the fluidity of sexuality with younger people is more accepted. The other story was tied in with Luke’s dad. He had a family. He’d been living a lie. He had an affair in his marriage. So there were a lot of different elements. With Marissa, no one’s getting hurt in the process.

Obviously you can’t give everything away, but people will wonder if this relationship can sustain. Especially when there is a large fan base that wants to see Ryan and Marissa back together

Hopefully we’ll be on a long, long time and everyone will get what they want.

Did you discuss it with Mischa?

We talked about it. She’s game. She had a storyline like this on Once and Again. Marissa loves whatever you throw at her. She’s game. If she’s OD-ing in Tijuana, she’s up for it. Exploring new parts of her sexuality—she’s up for it. But she wanted to make sure it came from a place of emotion.

A lot of times now when people hear about a lesbian relationship and the Fox network, they remember the Ally McBeal stunt several years ago, which was done to be a real ratings-getter.

I think the initial reaction is, “This is done to boost ratings.” I wasn’t familiar that there was an Ally McBeal thing. We cooked it up well before the show ever premiered this year. We’re constantly looking at evolving and growing these characters. And challenging them. They’re at that age where they’re open to it. It was either that or Oliver’s return.

I never watched this show either. I´ve seen fragments of it and they were enough to not make me want to watch, so I don´t think I will start watching now, but I am ever so curious how this will end. I am sure I can read about it here. If it should happen to end well, then there´s always reruns.

as some people can attest. I actually watched this at first. But, yeah I stopped watching a long time ago. SO now I am going to watch again. I am not going to say I won't cause I like lesbians lol. I have no expectations and I don't expect she'll stay with the girl but maybe they'll do it right and show some people's experiences with this. We'll see.

My concern with a show like the OC is that sooner or later they will get bored with the 'limitations' of having a lesbian character, that is someone will think it would be a cool storyline to have her link up with some male character and your back to square one. maybe this one will be the exception but I think Dr G. is right, if they do there are always reruns.

December 13, 2004 -- ALEX, the freewheeling character on "The O.C." played by Olivia Wilde, will embark on a lesbian relationship with Marissa (Mischa Barton), says show creator Josh Schwartz.

"Marissa is at a place where she's kind of lost in the world and is trying to find herself," Schwartz told The Post late Friday.

"Alex is someone who's emancipated from her parents, and is a little bit of a free spirit who becomes Marissa's mentor — she takes her under her wing and all of a sudden Marissa finds herself connecting."

Reports began to surface last week about the upcoming storyline, although just who Marissa would end up with in this new relationship left everyone scratching their heads — until now.

"Marissa is at a place where she's willing to try [a lesbian relationship] and she's open to that," Schwartz says. "We'll build it up to a kiss [between Marissa and Alex] and then a relationship develops."

Schwartz says the "big kiss" between the characters will be shot this week.

The hot new story arc begins next month on the Thursday-night Fox drama and will last for "multiple episodes" into the spring.

"We've already started shooting a lot of scenes with their relationship," he said. "Everybody is really comfortable with it, and the girls are really game and excited to play off of each other."

Schwartz says he is not thumping for ratings, insisting he formulated the storyline last summer.

"We're trying to figure out bigger arcs for our characters," he says. "This felt like a really interesting way to go. It's something that felt organic to the character.

"I've been surprised by the reaction, but I'm thrilled — we'll take it."

Always loved the OC, it tackles and delves into allsorts of issues teenagers and young people go through, such as alcohol/drug abuse, mental illness, younger guy older woman, love triangles, cheating, troubles with relationships, unwanted pregnancies.......... so it was pretty much a given that they would work with the sexuality issue as well. They kinda touched on it with Luke's father being gay plot line, so why not just go with it and see. Yeah, fair enough, they might not stay together forever but that's what happens in real life. Not every relationship is meant to last, so if it doesn't work out that's fine, and if it does, that's fine too, i'm just along for the ride, Seth.Cracks.Me.Up!!

I started watching the OC once I found out that Marissa's character was going to be in a relationship with a woman. I used to make fun of it (teenage soaps-- gahh) but it's actually pretty good.

woo hoo, it's started. Just some little fun to watch. I don't expect the best of things here, but so far so good. It's actually interesting to see an actual bisexual character.

The O.C.’s Lesbian Luvah

Sounds like Mischa Barton hasn’t had any problem adapting to her character’s reorientation on The O.C. “It’s actually been really fun. We get along really well,” Barton, who plays Marissa, told the New York Daily News with regard to her girl-on-girl scenes with Olivia Wilde. “Olivia’s a cool girl and we’ve had fun doing it,” Barton said. “It’s probably easier than it is most times with the boys that they bring on the show to be my love interest.” And for those boys—Benjamin McKenzie, Nicholas Gonzalez, and Out’s February cover boy, Chris Carmack—we say, “Ouch.”

I am enjoying the build up of their relationship. At first it almost seemed like Marissa was playing with Alex to see what sort of reaction she would get. When she finally headed home from the Bait Shop, the look on her face as she turned to watch Alex walk away was full of questions. As if she is suddenly realizing how she is feeling. She had been on this rollercoaster and never stop to really evaluate what was going on with her. Then with her conversation with Summer (which was great) you can see how much thought and emotion she is investing in it now. At the end (when they finally showed the scene from the previews after Christmas) where Marissa holds Alex's hand, I was so excited. They played it out perfectly. Alex looking all lonely, Marissa searching for her. Then the look on Alex's face when Marissa arrived and took her hand was priceless.

I am looking forward to next week. I wonder how the other character are going to relater to this development, and how long Marissa will want to keep it from them.

So who else is watching?

BTW I loved Seth's scenes. He totally cracks me up. Not to mention SUMMER IN COSTUME!!!! I am amazed at how well he could handle being in the same room with her while she was wearing it. HOT and so Comic Book looking. Perfect for their comic stories.

I saw a preview for last night's ep during the Super Bowl, which led to me looking up spoilers (in case my eyes weren't deceiving me), which led me to watch last night. I'm glad I did. I loved Mischa on O&A, and I'm psyched that she's playing another lesbian role (or whatever it turns out to be when all is said and done).

Fox vehemently denies that this is a sweeps thing. I don't think it's going to be long-term, but so far they're doing it right. The kiss last night was sweet and tentative, like you'd expect it to be for a first-time, and not all "let's get to the hot girl-on-girl action"- not that I wouldn't be game for that a little later. :blush

Very lame, it was excellent and they like killed it on scene. And it very much feels like ratings stunt now. The attitude Marissa and Alex both had at the end was not anything like what they'd had so far. It really is really terrible writing.

Yeah, The OC showed it's true colors last night. And while we all knew this was coming, it was still very lame. I don't think any of us were expecting it to be this good. They were doing great. But that was taken care of last night.

But hey, I'm sure we'll see Marissa with women again, and it will be in November, or February, or May...oh wait, isn't that when sweeps are on? :rolleyes

I might be missing something. Is it over already?Although I of course realize it's on the way.

I was way disappointed in the way the things went this week. It was such a huge difference from the sweetness of the previous ep...Suddenly there's the chicka-bam-bam music every time they kiss. And I cringed when Marissa moved in with her. That said to me, "Yep, they're setting this up for a quick fall." I had never watched the show before and even I remembered Alex saying something about not being into the whole relationship thing. The previews for next week have me very, very, sad.

This episode sucked. Marissa is just a spoiled brat, period. While we all knew this would not have a great ending, it had been going pretty good so far (for the most part.) But now that sweeps are over, time to go back to boystown as fast as possible.

And what about next week's preview :stop

I did crack up at Summer saying that she and Seth couldn't be more annoying than Ryan and Marissa, though. Heh.

Bah! :gnome I'm officially done with my exploration of the O.C. I don't want to be around for to see what's coming next. I just wanna keep the first few eps, wherein Alex and Marissa were treated respectfully and realistically, in my mind for remembrance. I don't want those memories tainted with the crap that's coming.

Big ol' ratings stunt indeed! You got what you wanted. I popped in, now I'm popping right back out. :peace

The O.C. is a stupid show. It's worthless and lame. I've downloaded the first two seasons ( til 20th episode in the 2nd season). The writer breaks up and brings together the couples 4 TIMES in ONE SEASON! It's a lame soap opera, and it's no different than Brazilian soap operas, which I hate, we just watch it because there is more sexuality and it's in California.

HOWEVER!

it is entertainment :)
