I liked Law & Order, but I missed a great many episodes due to it being on at an insanely late hour on a monday night, and it got switched around on me and now I have lost track of it, damn. I haven't watched the spin-offs. I'll go look and see if and when they are on over here.

Search no more, G.... Law & Order (Special Victims Unit) is on at Net5 on Sundays now, from approx. 23:00 - 00:10hrs. Try and stay awake or set your VCR and give it a little extra recording-time seeing as it is Net5.

Oooh, G, you will love SVU.

For folks who've seen all three L&Os, do you prefer one over the others?

I only started watching about 5 years ago, but with L&O on about three times a day on A&E at the time, it was a piece of cake to get caught up with everything that had happened before. Not that you're really missing anything if you haven't seen every ep, since there's precious little delving into the personal lives of the characters. But is that good or bad?

There are a few characters I'd really like to know more about, and others I couldn't care less about. There's no way they could please everyone, but I do think they have found a pretty good balance between giving us just enough insight into the characters' personal lives while keeping the show plot-focused. I'd hate for any of the L&Os to get soapy. I like soapy, but we have plenty of other soapy shows.

Law and Order is my television crack at the moment. If it's on, I have to watch it. TNT gives a two hour block of it almost every night and USA recently started to air SVU every night as well. I don't even want to count up the hours I spend watching this show. I think it would depress me.

I have a fondness for Law and Order: Original Recipe because I love Sam Waterston. I just love Jack McCoy, but my love for SVU is slowly growing. Mostly because I have a major girl-crush on Mariska (aka Olivia Benson) and Stephanie (aka Alex Cabot) and their latent sexual attraction on the show. I'm counting the days until SVU's first season is released on DVD.

I have yet to check out Criminal Intent simply because I don't want to up my L&O viewing hours.

question...

Postby swimcap » Sun Sep 21, 2003 4:31 pm

I am loving that USA is now showing SVU every night of the week. I didn't watch much the first season so I'm seeing lots of episodes for the first time. Does anyone know when Alex makes her first appearance? And when Olivia goes with the short hair? These are important questions!!! :wink

The lovely ADA Alex Cabot made her first appearance in the second season opener entitled "Wrong Is Right." I believe Benson got her new do around the same time.

No really, I need to stop watching this damn show.

I think I've grown to prefer SVU to the others, but it's very close. I like L&O very much and SVU is about a hair ahead of it in my regard.

Criminal Intent, though... Anyone watching that one? I like the format okay, focusing more on the criminals, but Goren being such a genius while Eames just stands behind him, nodding, and basically mostly just saying, "Yeah, what he said!" the whole ep annoys me quite a lot. I'm used to the partners being more equal in what they bring to the table. You don't see Benson and Stabler or Briscoe and Green being so uneven. It's clear that CI is Vincent D’Onofrio's show and I might feel differently about the character if I liked the actor more.

I agree with you about Criminal Intent, Holley. I just can't get into it like I do with the other two shows. Goren is too annoying and creepy to me. I do like D'Onofrio in other stuff, just not this.

I've had a very odd experience with L&O. It must be around ten years ago that I first saw the series on BBC1. I think they showed the first two seasons and then stopped. This being in my pre internet days I assumed that was all there was and regretted that a show I liked had been so unceremoniously cancelled. Imagine my surprise when it turned up on satellite a couple of years back and I discovered just how much of it there was....:spin

Tara: No, I understand you have to be with the person you l-love

Willow: I am

WOW! What a great show. This was the best possible way for her to leave. If she had to leave, which she did. I so thought she was safe, then I thought she was dead and then SO RELIEVED! But god the subtext!! Good god, bring on the fanfic. What a fantasic episode. I am all excited over it. I swear they were in love ;) I am going to miss Cabot.

Dude! That was an awesome show. Xita, I was relieved as well. I didn’t want her dead and when she was shot I was like ‘those fuckers killer her off’. But damn the sparks better her and Olivia where just flying in tonight’s episodes. And was I hearing things, when they where all listening to that tape of the guy who was saying he was going to snatcher her; they mentioned paying a visit to her mother and then I swore I hear him also say her girlfriend Lisa. I swear that’s what I heard!?!

Anyway, I’m already missing her. I wasn’t too happy with her new hair cut though, but I’ve always liked Cabot. I must also admit that SUV has taken the #1 spot as my favorite Law and Order. The original is now #2.

Re: question...

Postby emma peel » Wed Oct 15, 2003 2:30 am

I just finished watching the episode. I cried, and am really depressed, 'cause I didn't have any idea I would miss Alex as much as I am now.

Wow. Anyone who ever saw the episode of Xena, "is There A Doctor In the House" might get a idea of what happened tonight on L&O: SVU, but tonight's episode was more subtle, IMO. Much subtext in their final scene, though.

Jeez, I wish they would just give Olivia a steady girlfriend. The woman deserves some happiness and a bit of life away from work.

Wow, again. I think I'm speechless.

I hope some other kittens watched, 'cause I'd like some other opinions.

Man, I feel worse than when Jill Hennessy was killed on L&O in that car wreck.

Thanks for your comments, xita and scifiacid.

Janice

Edited to add some reflections: scifiacid, I watched the end again (bawled like a baby), and during the tape recording, it sounded to me like: "Her mom lives in upstate East (unintelligible), but you should really try to see her girlfriend. It's important."

At the beginning of the ep, when they go to visit Sister Peg, Elliott notices,"Dental dams, 1000 count. Business must be booming." Sister Peg responds "Cant keep them on the shelves."

The ep was written by Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, who are also supervising producers.

Also featured in the ep is Mitch Pillegi, who is on Tarzan, as Lucy Lawless's brother.

Law and Order: SVU

Postby BytrSuite » Wed Oct 15, 2003 10:12 am

Oh, that was so freaking good. After they showed that guy getting killed in the car explosion that they put all over the previews, I was wondering how they'd off Alex.

It got to less than 5 minutes left and I thought, oh, good, maybe they'll let her live. Then the drive-by.

I was very happily surprised with the ending. *sigh*

I hope the new ADA is okay.

I'm glad other kittens have watched the ep, BytrSuite. I'll have to watch my taped episode again to see what else I missed, if I can keep from bawling again. I initially missed that it was the agent who got killed in the explosion ( I knew it wasn't Alex), but I think I had a problem hearing and understanding some of the dialogue. I just found out last week that I have have a moderate hearing loss-sigh.

Anyway, some of the expressions said much more than words could-Olivia's expression when Alex got shot, then her expression when she saw Alex was still alive.

Darn, I wish the writers would allow Olivia to have a girlfriend.

I think for the most part, the only regular female interaction (other than Alex) that Olivia has is with Medical Examiner Warner (Tamara Tunie), who's rather attractive, IMO.

Hmmmmmmm. I wish!

Janice

A random afterthought-did anyone else notice how really strong and gutsy the female characters were last night? The judge cracked me up when she told off the last group of agents (can't remember who they were with) and said something to the effect of "take your dog and pony show with you."

Re: Law and Order: SVU

Postby scifiacid » Wed Oct 15, 2003 12:36 pm

It was definitely a good episode. As I said, SUV has really become my favorite L&O. I use to not like Christopher Meloni so much. I know people where just inthralled with him in Oz, a show I never watched, but as Stabler I really didn’t like him, nor the character. I think they’ve loosened him up a bit and he’s less abrasive these days, and Meloni has made him more likeable. I don’t know, something’s different and I like him more. He works better for me now. Plus, I loved Munch on Homicide and Richard Belzer and Ice-T make a good team. All in all, I love the cast of SUV.

I’m curious about the new ADA. They’ve already got Diane Neal on the NBC website. I liked Cabot from the beginning even though she was a bit sharp and unbending. The best thing about watching earlier episodes though, Abbie (Angie Harmon)! Abbie pulled ADA duties for a while until they got Cabot as a steady. I liked seeing Angie and Mariska together on screne… Anyway, I digress. I’ll have to download it or tape it when it replays so I can here that conversation again. I swear they said girlfriend Lisa… hehe.

Speaking of Neal, www.actingscene.com/close%20up.htm scroll down a bit, that’s her. Hm, I think I’ve seen her.

Neal does look familiar, scifiacid.

Also, they could have said girlfriend Lisa. As I mentioned, I just was just recently diagnosed with a hearing loss, so who knows...but who the heck would Lisa be...maybe a codename for Olivia??? Or maybe we both are mistaken and she said girlfriend Olivia. Hehe. But he did definitely say girlfriend on the tape..I think...:lol

Well you know I used to love L&O with Abbie. But I hate to say it, Elizabeth Rohm is bringing nothing to it, and I was pretty excited about her being on it.

SVU is just the best, I am one of those that loves Meloni from Oz. So I liked him already and yeah I agree about the rest of the cast. I don't think Olivia is gay but it's nice that they gave us subtext. I still think L&Os need a gay character somewhere. It would be a nice balance.

Oh what subtext what fun and alex lives! yay! Thanks kathy, I am def going to tape it on USA.

Subtext Has Left the Building

Postby lustandrhymeremover » Wed Oct 15, 2003 3:34 pm

Ooooh WoW. Last night's episode was great. I don't think I've ever been so sad to see a character die :cry - and so happy when they come back. :banana

But on an even more important W:eek W, I think I missed all the subtext in the ep. I was too blinded by the blaring faux sub-text that would put eps of Xena to shame. I mean Olivia's face when she thought Alex was dead - it made me want to cry. And that last scene wasn't even all acting sub. The way the camera kept flashing back and forth between the two of them looking at each other and focusing a little, then showing them together in a shot... I was just waiting for confessions of undying love, or at least a kiss. I was practically shocked when something didn't happen.

I didn't catch the girlfriend line on the message, but I'll check for it when I re-watch the eppie on USA (yay repeats!). My little shipper heart keeps going, "Yep, girlfriend. You know they were talkin bout Olivia." Oh! More little bits that almost cracked me up, if they hadn't a'been so sad: Olivia offering to let Alex stay at her place.. like it was something they did all the time...:wink And don't forget the part where Alex was gushing blood all over the place and Liv kept calling her "sweetie". I'm a southerner and quite used to "sweetie" and "honey" all over the place, but excepting a small child, I don't think I would call my just kinda friends sweetie when they were bleeding to death.. That would be more of a name-usage occasion to me. But that could very well just be my little shipper heart again (it's always seeing things that aren't there just to make me happy). But here's to hoping that Alex will someday make a triumphant return!:pray

Some people think I'm unnatural, but what do they call their hair-color then?

xita, I agree with you about Abbie. She was great. Jill Hennessy was a close second, IMO. Elizabeth Rohm is growing on me, and I like the character better now. She's getting spunky. Also, she isn't as wooden as when she first started this series.

Anyone was an improvement over Carey Lowell, in my book.

As for gays, B.D. Wong, the shrink on SVU (I think his character's name is George Huang-spelling???) is openly gay in real life.

What the Executive Producer of SVU says about the new ADA Casey Novak:

Quote:
You want to have somebody who is just as strong,'' Baer said. ``Casey's a very different character. She plays softball. She's down and dirty and very competitive. We'll see her riding her bike to work. We would never see Alex doing that.''

Neal's character will also befriend Detective Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and, for the first time, give viewers a peek into Benson's love life.

She plays softball? Things that make you go.. hmmmm....
