Queer As Folk

Postby Arwen » Tue Oct 29, 2002 11:44 am

I am a huge fan of this show, I tape it every Monday night on Showcase, and can't wait to get home after work and see it. My question is, how many QAFie's do we have here, and what do you think of the show? I myself am extremely disappointed with the single lesbian relationship on the show and it's lack of depiction at times, but I also understand that it's a show based on the male cast. (Hopefully that will be redeemed by the new show coming out! woo hoo!)

Who are your favourite characters on the show? I love Ben and Michael, and their storyline, and I wish I could shake some sense into Brian. And did anyone see the violinist last night? Wow. Brian better watch out, Justin's gonna split!

And Emett. I want him as a rl friend!

I must say I haven't seen many episodes. I'm from Europe, not America, and where I live they never (thankfully) broadcasted the show.

From what I saw (online articles, clips here and there, some random episodes, interviews with the cast) i was certainly not happy. Everyone said the show was wonderful, that it 'portrayed the gay life style so well', so I tried enjoying it. It's just that the constant sex scenes, the endless models in the endless scenes in bars make me nauseous.

Society as a whole seems to think being gay = going to bars and having lots of sex. They sure do that in QAF. I surely don't want to do that (and don't) in my real life.

Also, the whole puppy love of Michael for Brian... Justin and Brian's on and off relationship.. Emmett's 'catch' of the episode... sex, sex, sex.

Bah. I miss Willow and Tara.

(Sorry to all the QAF fans, I just don't like the show).

well

I havent seen the american adaptation of it, but i did watch the original that was based in manchesters canal street, and i have to say that i found the first series quite good, just cos of the location with places i knew, i found the second series crap, but you often find that, they seemed to try and mirror the first and it was never going to live up to it.

As for the american adaptation, i have not seen it, but i do know that my brother loves it, but then he is a gay man!!.

I still prefer Bad girls, which i see as the closest female programme.

I can't figure out how/why they depict Pittsburgh as a gay Shangri-La. At the rate those guys go through men, they would have exhausted the city's resources a long time ago. I mean, maybe it would be feasible in SF. But Pittsburgh?! Cracks me up.

Wow, that was so close to being empowering. --"Same Time, Same Place"

Well in the UK it's on here on BBC Choice.

We bought the DVDs of season 1 a while back and loved it a whole lot more than we did the UK version tho I still love Vince (in the QAF UK)

I think the US version gives you more time to invest in the characters and I like that. I actually like Brian where as in the UK version I hated Stewart Allan Jones ;)

I gotta say my fav character has to be Mel, she is a hottie and a a half ;) :thud

I wish season 2 DVDs would come out soon, or have I missed something and they are out already, someone please fill me in - this could be a great chrimbo pressie for my gal. (who am I kiddin' LOL - me!)

Ohh and forgot Sharon Gless. She is no Chris Cagney anymore bless her but she is a cracker.

i never saw the UK version, but i have to admit the US version is sort of my little guilty pleasure. i too, as a lesbian, wish that the lesbian couple were given more attention. i totally second the mel as a hottie statement. i understand though that it's more important for there to be more representation of homosexual men. lesbianism being all trendy lately means that lesbian characters sorta pop up on all sorts of shows, gay men are sadly underrepresented. i don't necessarily believe that queer as folk should be seen as how gay life really is. LOL! i kinda see it like a soap opera. like passions! HAHA! you don't watch it cuz you actually think life is really like that, you watch it cuz it's just so darn fun! :)

Well, I love the show. I can't really explain it, I just love it. :)

And in regard to Ruby's comment: "But Pittsburgh?! Cracks me up."

I agree with you Ruby, it cracks me up too. I live in Pittsburgh and I can tell you, this is SOOOO not a booming Gay/Lesbian town. Unless I am really missing something!

Brian would definitely have slept with the entire Gay Male Community!

I love the show personally.

Postby Iamyouknowyours » Tue Oct 29, 2002 9:42 pm

But then again I've only seen season 1 on DVD. (Hurry up season 2!

Hurry up season 2!) It actually helped me get through a bit of my Buffy withdrawl :) Is it realistic? Probably not 100%. I certainly believe gay men are capable of commiting to a relationship. I've seen it happen. But I like a lot of the characters. Justin is my favorite, though he's a bit of a brat and Emmett is a sweetie. I also love his best friend Daphne (although I heard she isn't in following seasons) and Micheal's mom rocks my world. And Lindsey is cute. The lesbians are really side characters though. For kittens in the US, I would definately recommend it for at least a rental.

Sex always leads to bad things on Buffy. Angel turned evil, Willow turned evil, Tara got shot, Buffy ended up dating Riley...

The whole depiction of the gay lifestyle does annoy the hell out of me, what with the constant sex and bars, but I find I like the people. I like that they are showing Brian with his work right now, and and exploring other sides of people. I wish they'd show more with the girls, but we'll have to wait for the new series I guess. And yes, I had the same thought, Pittsburg?

Well I love the show just because I love the humour. I can't choose a favouritecharacter, I love Justin and Michael because they're cuties, Emmet 'cause you just want him to be *your* friend but...I can't stand Lindsey! I like Mel, she's brilliant, but Lindsey just annoys me, to put it simply.

I'd say that it isn't anywhere near like "real life", but just think of it as a show that "takes you away from real life", lol, and it's fine :)

My one complaint is that the girls just can't get a storyline, where in season one here so Mel just had an affair and is now back with Lindsey, but other than that they really rarely have a storyline.

Nice new thread BTW!

I totally agree with the lack of storyline with Lindsey and Mel. I wish they culd get something juicy. I thought it might pick up after their wedding, but alas, we get the 'lesbian bed death' (and can I just say whatever to that?) thing, and now the triangle thing going on. Sigh. I wish we could write for the show, wouldn't that be a hoot?

And it is a nice escape from reality, I laugh out loud at some of the things Brian comes up with. It took me a long time to like brian, at first I thought he was a self involved prick. Well, he is, actually, but we're starting to see the vulnerablilty underneath. It will be interesting to see what this relationship Justin has beginning with the violinist (I can remember his name) will turn out.

I cant really say that I like the North American adaption much.(It's a Canadian American adaption...but mostly American) I liked the original British version, and the NA version is sort of like watching a campy version of a good book...a weird guilty plessure, I guess.

Actually, I really like the violinist. At first I thought he was this guy I knew who is an actor, but it turned out he just looks like him...

I love this show. I'm a lesbian...and I admit...the lesbian parts are lacking...but at least they have some steamy parts enough to keep you wanting more. I have been trying to think how this might relate to the whole lesbian cliche catagory. They haven't died...or been hurt..or been crazy...so that means at this time..they are one of the few active lesbian couples being played on TV today that don't fall under that "lesbian cliche" catagory. Right?

And just a tid bit. I was watching season 2 or so I think of Buffy and the guy who plays the new violinist, is the guy who played Buffy's boyfriend in the early season. Anyone remember what shows I'm talking about. I about freaked out when I finally caught on.

I really dislike the show, sorry. I just find it trashy and badly-written, but a lot of my friends enjoy it muchly. Sometimes I like to watch it, you know, just to see something gay on teevee, but then there's the graphic boy-sex and me covering my eyes and squealing, 'Ah! Eek! Kenda, that stuff is so gross!' like a four year old even though my best friend describes him and his boyfriend doing raunchier things whenever I see him. Then Kenda pretty much smacks me and tells me to change the channel or shut up. I love the British version, though, and if you guys haven't seen it, you should.

I know the question was about who likes it, but I just had to express the above. I don't mean any offence to QAF US fans.

ROTFLMAO! Sorry Star, but I couldn't help it....mostly because I agree about the graphic parts...just a bit too squicky for me.

Kieli, I know, it's so hardcore with the naked. The last time I watched it was full raunch-fest in the shower and I actually tilted my head to the side like people in movies and teevee do when they're watching porn and I was like, 'Oh my Gods! That's so...' There was fear, lemme say. At that precise, wonderful moment Kenda came home from work and I was so ashamed... I was like, 'ha! I'm not watching naughty gay-boy soft porn'. If they toned down the sex, I wouldn't dislike the show so much, I think. The UK series has graphic sex but it was always to illustrate something about the character- not in this version. Nudity is all over the place, week after week, graphic and moan-y and in my face, reassuring me that being a lesbian was good luck on my part.

Well, QAF, eh? It's nice. I mean, its paving some important way by means of portraying male gays in a casual way... that is to say, minus some of the drama. Which is nice, y'know? Plus, I can't help but to be happy for my gay guy friends who finaly have something to watch on the telly.

As what it does for me... well, the sex scenes are really kind of boring. Y'know, two guys doin' it, yada yada yada. But… Are you guys offended by it? I don't mean to diss but, hey, imagine they'd be saying that about a lesbian couple in a show, how would you feel? As a lesbian I might not find it the least bit appealing, but I'd sooner ram my head into a brick wall than complain about it. It’s freedom for gays to on the media, ya know? They just need to be this graphic ‘cause they’re pioneers. Next thing ya know they’d be an all-lesbian show that explicit, and that would be just so great. So I say, whatever, just give me my three seconds of Mel and Lindz per episode and I’m good. :)

I don't mind the boy on boy sex scenes. Yes they are super graphic, but except for the occational penis shot (yikes! I'm not personally a big fan of those) I have no problems with them. I do however prefer the love scenes to the random Brian getting some from an anonymous stranger shagfests. Mostly, I just really liked the characters.

Side note, I've been having Queer as Folkathons with my buddy Mike and we just watched the whole lesbian break up scene, and although I know there are happier times ahead I started getting all sniffly and bummed, yelling loadly at no one in particular, "Why are there no happy lebian relationships on TV!!!!"

New Ground

Postby Patches » Wed Nov 27, 2002 1:00 am

Been lurking around the board for a while, trying to figure out just where and how to jump in, this thread seemed a good place to start. So, here I go - head first dive off the 10 meter platform ...

I love QAF!! Like most of you, I have to close my eyes when Brian and the boys get into hormone overdrive - so not my cup of tea; however, there is so much more to the show than boy toy playtime. Although I haven't seen the original, I am told that the North American version has lesbians with their own story lines whereas the UK version does not.

I believe _anything_ portraying queer life should be supported, wholeheartedly. (This was how I got hooked on BtVS, I started watching when a friend told me that Willow was coming out and have faithfully watched every episode since and caught the entire series at least twice on re-run).

For those of you who haven't followed the whole show, QAF isn't just about sex. Although there are naked bodies a plenty, the story lines in QAF are about the things we all deal with on a daily basis: the issues we have with work, family, friends, who do we dare come out to, the frustration we face with the judicial systems, homophobia, acceptance, rejection, the list is really, really long. What I like most about the show (besides the fact it's filmed in Canada ) is that it re-affirms that at the end of the day what we have as a community is each other - our friends, our 'chosen' family if you will, and that it's okay to be gay.

I started watching the show because I felt I 'had' to - it was Queer and therefore required viewing. After a couple of episodes though I was hooked, mainly because I could relate to the characters - they are real people, brilliant, beautiful, flawed, emotionally damaged, charismatic, loved and hated normal people. I agree that there's more to the queer nation than bars, but that's where just about everyone (who is lucky enough to have a bar) starts out. I like that the show portrays sex as something that is as normal and natural as breathing, be it a relationship or a casual fling. IMHO, (and in my experience) we're trained that being gay is bad and what we do in bed is even worse - QAF shatters that whole notion, it celebrates being gay in a positive way. The producers set out to bend the boundaries of conventional television and I think they've succeeded admirably.

For all of you who have tuned it out, tune back in for a while longer - you might find QAF is more than just skin deep (and the QAF producers aren't going to kill off the lesbians characters as a 'plot' device.)

___

So, I guess the question now is, did I hit the pool with a perfect ripped entry or have I gone and made an embarrassing splash?

Cheers

Re: QAF

Postby KISMIC » Wed Nov 27, 2002 5:27 am

In response to what Mrs Vertigo wrote a few posts back, I don't find the guy on guy scenes offensive at all. I actually think it's brilliant because the show is funny without being just another Will&Grace-screwball-ish-comedy. The guys relationships aren't token relationships but are portrayed in a way that straight viewers can also watch it and *gasp* like the show without really having to think that it's actually a really, really gay show!

Anyway, so I'm just wondering everyone, what episodes are playing where you all are - I can't tell whether I'm behind or ahead so it's kinda hard to discuss without knowing even that. the last episode to air here was the one where it's Justin's prom and Dr David is moving away with Michael...

Well, in this last episode a LOT of stuff happened that's impossible to relate without giving away important spoilers. But Mel and Lindsay had their very own gratuitous nudity scene! (L's breasts and M's lovely behind, for those who are interested.)

Actually, it was pretty normal, and not at all sexual; Mel was getting out of bed because Linds was having a fight with her mom (on the phone, of course!). The whole thing gave me that weird jolt of recognition when you realize how SELDOM lesbian life is portrayed...well, anywhere.

Wow, that was so close to being empowering. --"Same Time, Same Place"

I love QAF!!

I've never missed an episode. I started watching it with one of my friends who had a thing for gay men :) . I'd be sitting there, watching it with her saying "yeah! woo hoo! gay men!" and thinking "wow, Mel and Linds are really hot." Oh, my 'straight' days.

Anyway, to answer your question KISMIC, no new episodes are airing right now here in Canada. The second season ended awhile ago, so it's all repeats until they do the third season :cry .

But luckily for you, the episode you described is only the season finale of the first season. You have the whole second season in store for you!! And it is good. Lots more Mel and Lindsay (which I definitely enjoyed).

Ahh so LostInEctasy that was the season finale? Hmm here's hoping that the channel that airs it here just keeps it rolling right into the next season. It had three seasons? That's great I'd only heard that there were two seasons all up!

Hmm I have a friend who 'has a thing for gay men', unfortunately she sums that up as meaning - guys that are cute, dress well and like to shop :rollseyes Otherwise I really doubt she'd be able to sit through the sex scenes. Eh her loss...

Re: QAF

Postby Patches » Thu Nov 28, 2002 9:46 pm

QAF is absolutely filming season 3. They went to camera in early October and will film until spring - another season with 22 full episodes!! Although they won't have the whole season in the can, they should start airing season 3 episodes in February - at least that was what I've heard.

Showcase (Canada) just started re-running season 2 a couple of weeks ago. What they'll likely do is run those episodes weekly and then have a QAF marathon to bring them up to the start of season 3.

Mel and Lindsey were supposed to be just ancillary characters (friends of Brian). But viewers in season 1 loved them so much the producers and writers decided to expand their story lines, hence the extra screen time in season 2.

I saw one episode about a year ago and thought it was okay. I kept passing by the Season One DVDs at Blockbuster, thinking I could find something better. Then last week I decided to try the first disc. I got addicted after two episodes. I had to go back to Blockbuster and get the rest of the DVDS. I saw the entire first season in a week and can't wait to pick up season 2 when it comes out next week. I loved it! I was a bit disappointed that the lesbians didn't get much screen time, but their story definately picked up as the season progressed. And I fell in love with the men too. What drama! It's better than any soap! I also saw the British version about a year ago. It was also excellent. I watched the whole thing in one sitting. The lesbians were definately non-existent in the British version. They barely get more than a few minutes of screen time.

strangely enough, my mother who happens to be a first grade teacher, which really aren't all that wholesome of folks once you get to know them, is addicted to QAF. she's a soap opera fanatic anyway and apparently gay soap operas are far more entertaining than straight ones to her. lol.

she was one of the first people who reserved season two at my work with me. and i believe she remains the only straight person on the reserve list as well. :p

i myself like the show all right but it's hardly my favorite thing on the air right now. tis fun though. i still want to get someone to produce my idea for a lesbian soap opera that just shows tits and ass, never the actresses faces. now that's quality. lol.
