Life on Mars

This is perhaps a bit late since the first series has already finshed, but oh well.

So did anyone else this? It''s one of the best the BBC has shown for quite a while.

For those who haven't seen it the story is about Detective Chief Inspector Sam Tyler. While investigating a murder he's run over and wakes up to find himself in 1973. So has he gone back in time, is he in a coma dreaming all of this, or is it his memories from 2006 that are the dream?

So far the show has mainly focused on the contrast between the modern, caring, touchy feely policing seen now with the old school, punchy beaty style policing of 1973.

As well as being good drama, it has some very funny moments. Such as when Sam, after seeing his fellow officers interogation techniques, says that the place is more like Guatanamo Bay than a police station. To which his boss replies, "Don't be silly, it's nothing like Spain."

I've read that an American station is looking to show it. If it is shown in America then I'd recommend watching it.

ETA: The title comes from the song which is playing on Sam's iPod just before he's run over, and then on his eight track when he wakes up.

After Doctor Who it's possibly my favourite TV show, I absolutely loved it. Eight episodes wasn't enough though, I'm so glad there's at least one more series.

Philip Glenister (his boss) had lots of laugh-out-loud one-liners, and the show made me cry too.

I think it's one of the few shows that would work well as a US re-make. I imagine 1973 New York would be an interesting comparison to today.

Actually its inspiration is more British shows of the 70's, 'The Sweeny' being the most obvious inspiration, though John Sims has said he based Sam Tylers look on Bodie of 'The Professionals'.
The show is full of wonderful moments, like when Sam realizes that a dead body in a mill is located exactly where his kitchen will be in the future when the place is converted into flats. :-D
First rate show and it will be back next year, in the meantime of course there's Doctor Who and Torchwood to look forward to...

i love the idea that either 1973 or 2006 can be the dream state and it messes with your head after a while :lol

British shows sweep world Emmys

British shows Life on Mars and Little Britain were among the winners at this year's International Emmy awards.

Life On Mars was named best drama series at the New York event, while Little Britain won best comedy.

Ray Winstone was crowned best actor for his role in ITV1 drama Vincent, while Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares show won for "non-scripted entertainment".

Irish comedian Graham Norton hosted the ceremony, which honoured television programmes produced outside the US.

Another UK series, Channel 4's Sugar Rush, won in the children and young people category.

British productions had been nominated in all nine Emmy categories.

I posted this in the Sugar Rush thread as well. I wonder if this will encourage a US remake of LoM even more? I definately recommend it, it's geat. :D
