Hospital Central

Hi :wave

I tried to see if this show had already been talked about in some other thread and since I didn't find it I decided to start a thread for it. (I have to admit that I didn't do a very thorough search of the board :blush so mods feel free to move this post or close this thread if you think it's necessary)

HOSPITAL CENTRAL is a Spanish hospital show with your typical hospital plots. So why am I starting a thread to talk about it?
Because it has one of the most sweet lesbian couples that I have ever seen portrayed on tv.
Esther is the head nurse and Maca is the new pediatrician. When they meet (on season 8) they start off on the wrong foot but as the series move forward they become first friends and then girlfriends.
The scenes of them together are beyond cute and sparks fly when they meet on screen.
Better yet they are two three dimensional gay characters whose relationship is treated with the same care and respect as any heterossexual relationship on the show.

So has anyone else on the board seen this show? I'm quickly becoming addicted to it :kgeek

For the American kittens who have Comcast (I have no idea if any other cable company is airing this show on the U.S.) , canal 52MX is airing this show both season 8 (when they meet) and a previous season.
( I hope I'm not over explaining things, because I can be annoying like that sometimes) :whistle

I tried to resist not becoming addicted to it, but alas the pull was too strong. The new season is starting today in Spain. Maca and Esther are adorable together. It helps that Patricia Vico (the actress who plays Maca) is gorgeous. I recommend anyone who has a basic grasp of the Spanish language to check it out.

Here are some sites with clips:

Xenababe
Sounder's Site

And here's a place where you can get English translations of most of the episodes.

Hello runnerbird :wave

You are absolutelly right that Maca is gorgeous although I'm kind of partial to Esther myself. I just love that half embarassed smile of hers :blush And of course I love them together :grin

I caught this episode the other day where a police woman comes to the hospital to investigate the death of a boy and Esther gets jealous because the other woman is always around Maca and so she spents half the episode sulking and trying to make Maca feel jealous of her too. By the end of the episode she is feeling like an idiot and goes to Maca's house to apologize.
That scene of them together is one of the cutest that I have seen lately...

(spoilers ahead)

The scene starts with Esther looking extremely nervous as we see her through Maca's peephole on the door. She anxiously darts her eyes around, her face almost complately hidden by the bouquet she's carrying as a peace offering. As Maca opens the door Esther thrusts the flowers to Maca without much preamble and apologizes, nervously stammering a little and we see Maca holding the flowers and looking serious as she suggests that Esther acted like a fool. Afterwards Maca tells Esther "Thank you for the flowers. They are very pretty. See you tomorrow" and closes the door. We see Esther looking sadly at the ground but then the camera shifts to show Maca inside the door smiling wickedly and quickly opening the door again and saying to Esther "come in". As she realizes what is going on Esther gives that half embarassed smile and walks through the door. Maca lifts her hand, gently grabs Esther's chin and pulls her in for a sweet kiss. When the kiss breaks they stay with their foreheads touching, looking deeply in each other eyes, Maca's hand gently touching Esther's neck and Maca whispers "silly you". Then Maca closes the door with her foot and the scene ends. :sigh

Ok, so I admit it. I'm not becoming addicted to the show. I already am addicted to it, lol. But as addictions go I'm lucky since my cable company is airing the show (with subtitles, thank God) and I just caught it right in the middle of the eigth season so I haven't missed much of their scenes together. And now I'm going to take avantage of the links you provived and check out their first meeting... and probably get some spoilers too... ehehehe :kdevil

I know nothing about this addiction you speak of. It's completely normal to search the net for seasons eight, nine and ten of a show from another country and spend hours obtaining said episodes of show. Yep, completely normal. :) I love the show. I knew I was a goner when I started to really get into the other character's storylines (Javier and Laura, yay).

I think I love their storyline so much because it is so matter-of-fact. Even though Esther never was attracted to women before, their storyline wasn't a dramatic cryfest about Esther realizing she was gay, but it was very much handled as two people falling in love and not two women. It was refreshing. I love that Esther is jealous. I love that Maca is blunt to a fault. I love that these characters have their human quirks.

I also adore that both actresses have become very active in lesbian and gay causes in Spain. Patricia Vico (Maca) was featured in an ad campaign against gay bashing. Both actresses seem to have happily taken on the mantle of "lesbian icon and activists". It is nice to seem them being interviewed and constantly announce their heterosexuality.

If you are only on season eight then there is much drama ahead for you. Good stuff.

Hi runnerbird :wave

I too think it's completely normal to search the internet for other countries' shows and spend hours getting the episodes and then spend yet more hours seeing said episodes... over and over again :moo In fact I distinctly remember doing that to see season five and parts of season six of a show whose name I won't mention that featured an adorable babling redhaired witch and a shy blonde witch in love with each other... Oh... and I think it had something to do with vampires! lol. :laugh

But getting back to Hospital Center (or is it Central Hospital in English :confused), I spoiled myself enough only to know that Esther and Maca are still happy and together at the beginning of the eleventh season (that as you said started last month in Spain). So I have at least two years and a half more of happy togetherness to watch. Yay... :pinky

I think I like them so much precisely because they have flaws and special quirks just like every other human being on this planet.
I find it kind of cute the way Esther goes nuts with jealousy and the matter of fact way in wich Maca deals with it. And I love that we get to see them interacting with each other in so many different ways... arguing, bantering, teasing or simply searching each other out during the day to go to the cafeteria and drink coffee and talk about how their day went, or how it is going. And the best thing is that I find myself believing in their love story. I look at the screen and I see two women in love.
Yeah, I'm hoping I have a lot of good stuff ahead to watch :grin

I know what you mean about starting to really get into the other character's storylines. I find myseil rooting for Vilches and Cruz to get together. I think Vilches is a riot with his non politically correct responses to almost everything. And yet deep down he's a good guy.
Javier and Laura always doing circles around each other.
And Teresita and Rusti?! I always get a good laugh out of their scenes.

Now the only bad part of this show is that the season 8th episodes are airing only once a week on my cable company :kdevil
