Stardust

I saw this for the second time today. Stardust is based on a novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman. He's one of my favorite authors and happens to be one of the film's producers. It's rare when an author is pleased with a tv/film adaptation of his/her work, but Neil isn't just pleased ... he seems almost ecstatic. And make no bones, this is not the book he wrote. There is a fair amount count out (there always has to be) and some things added/changed which actually improve the overall story arc (rare indeed).

What's it about? Well, in a nutshell it's a boy's coming of age story, It has a quest by the boy into Faerie for the fallen star (he wants it as a gift for the girl he loves), the death of a wicked king and the quest of his murderous sons for the crown jewel, and the quest by evil witches for the star's heart (with it they can become young and powerful again. It has lightning pirates, billy goats who pull chariots, thundering horses, sword fights, and an unicorn. Oh, and True Love.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNiro are a witch and a pirate respectively; both appear to be having the time of their lives.

An reviewer for NPR referred to it as The Princess Bride meets the Black Adder....

2 thumbs up.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this film since I love the book so much that I bought a signed first edition a while back. I've heard mostly good things about the film, although some critics think Clare Danes is miscast. Since I haven't seen it yet I have no idea. Charlie Cox was quite good in a film called Dot the I and I love Sienna Miller so I can't imagine not liking it overall.

If you liked The Princess Bride, or Shrek, or any good film, you'll enjoy this. It's funny, it's exciting, it's sweet. Loved it!

Every part in this film is perfectly cast. The supporting actors really eat up the scenery. The ghosts had us roaring with laughter before they even spoke. And Michelle Pfieffer still sizzles.

We went out to lunch afterwards and the waiter commented on how much we were smiling. You just can't help but feel good after seeing this movie.

Really, I can't recommend Stardust highly enough.

I remember reading a rather scathing review of the movie recently and was shocked at the loathing this reviewer seemed to have for the flick. :wtf

I personally am a huge Gaiman fan and trust his judgment of the film. Since he was personally involved in the project, I can only imagine that it came off very well. Methinks I might purchase this come Christmas. Looks like it won't disappoint.
