Moonlight

Well of course I feel we ought to have a thread on which to discuss the new show "Moonlight" which obviously owes so much to both "Angel" and an old personal fave, "Forever Knight".

First, it was nice to see Jason Dohring (late of "Veronica Mars") again in a totally different kind of role, and also Rudolf Martin. :)

At first glance, it would seem that this series' vamps are going to be more like those of Anne Rice, rather than the "traditional" types of vamps, so no problems with garlic, crosses, stakes or even daylight (!). Interesting that they decided to lay out these rules right at the beginning of the show (where our hero sleeps in a freezer, rather than a coffin). This obviously gives the writers a lot of freedom, but it seems to me will provide something of a challenge in coming up with good storylines--the vampire "lifestyle" doesn't seem to be such a problem if you can basically live a normal (if immortal and quasi invulnerable) life and all you have to do is nourish yourself on blood and operate nocturnally (so, no "existential agonizing" on this show a la "Angel" ;-) ).

Apart from the two old friends mentioned above, I didn't find the acting particularly distinguished, and the writing was just acceptable.

I am, though, a big enough fan of vampire stories to stick with this series for at least a while longer, to see how things develop. In the meantime, according to my TV listings the pilot will be re-broadcast tonight on CBS for those who may have missed it. I will be curious to get your reactions.

I watched the ep and thought it was okay, but they shouldn't have cancelled "Close to Home" for it.

Generally speaking, I've always had a bit of a problem with moral vampires. Angel was different because he had his morality forced upon him, and only after doing a lot of awful things. It made for a nicely conflicted character. But, the vampire with a heart of gold is just not that appealing. I guess I like my vampires nasty.

The vampire on Blood Ties does good things too, but at least he's unpredictable. And, really, as long as Christina Cox is on the show who really cares?

I think my favorite scene in Moonlight was the walk through the older vampires place in the Hollywood Hills. Damn! Nice crib!

The show itself was ok. There are better and worse things on TV. I thought it was good enough to check out a few more episodes.

Quite a good second episode for this series, with a creepy villain and a (not unexpected) Big Reveal at the end. It was well written, which is not surprising given that the writer was none other than David Greenwalt, a chap with some experience writing about vampires. ;-)

I'm getting to like very much Jason Dohring in his new role as a 400-year-old vamp (I have to admit getting a kick out of the scene where he offers Mick a choice between biting a redhead or a blonde by asking "Red or White?" :lol ), and I hope that his part is expanded on future episodes.

Who came up with the idea about stakes in the heart paralyzing but not killing vamps!!?? That's just plain weird...
