First, it was nice to see Jason Dohring (late of "Veronica Mars") again in a totally different kind of role, and also Rudolf Martin.
At first glance, it would seem that this series' vamps are going to be more like those of Anne Rice, rather than the "traditional" types of vamps, so no problems with garlic, crosses, stakes or even daylight (!). Interesting that they decided to lay out these rules right at the beginning of the show (where our hero sleeps in a freezer, rather than a coffin). This obviously gives the writers a lot of freedom, but it seems to me will provide something of a challenge in coming up with good storylines--the vampire "lifestyle" doesn't seem to be such a problem if you can basically live a normal (if immortal and quasi invulnerable) life and all you have to do is nourish yourself on blood and operate nocturnally (so, no "existential agonizing" on this show a la "Angel"
).
Apart from the two old friends mentioned above, I didn't find the acting particularly distinguished, and the writing was just acceptable.
I am, though, a big enough fan of vampire stories to stick with this series for at least a while longer, to see how things develop. In the meantime, according to my TV listings the pilot will be re-broadcast tonight on CBS for those who may have missed it. I will be curious to get your reactions.
), and I hope that his part is expanded on future episodes.
