Homecoming in Hatfield, Massachusetts. The autumn leaves swirl around the parade of cars full of anxious seniors, waiting for another year to start. The sooner started the sooner it will be over. The Varsity girl’s soccer game is over in the late afternoon. Jane W----- watches as her beloved Sarah L----- leaves the locker room, still sweaty from the intense match. They had won 5-4 over Hampton, almost tying at the end, but Sarah scored the final point. Jane slowly opens the door of her rented beat up 89 Ford Tempo, anxiously waiting for Sarah to notice her.
Jane had been dating Sarah for almost five months long distance over the internet. She had collected some vacation from work and filed for a leave of absence in school, all to come and see her love. Sarah was not be any means expecting to see Jane until she herself was flying to Alaska to meet her for the first time….or so she thought. Jane had other ideas, she figured that summer was just too far away and intended on proving her point to Sarah, even if it took her whole trip to so do.
Sarah walks quickly out to her 2001 Mitshubishi Galant hugging her arms to her chest as the wind whipped through her hair. Never noticing Jane, Sarah put her soccer gear into her backseat and leaned into retrieve her jacket. It had been a cold and windy day for soccer, and she was especially cold after her shower. Just as Sarah grabbed her coat she felt warm arms wrap around her body and legs press up against hers. For a moment she panics and leaps up, hitting her head on the top of her car in the process. She hears a familiar giggle.
Could it be? Is it really her…I would know that giggle anywhere, Sarah thought to herself. No it can’t be…is it? Sarah’s mind raced with so many questions.
“Sorry Sweetie!” Jane apologized profusely, turning her GF around to face her.
Sarah couldn’t believe her eyes, It is her, she shouts inside her head. Suddenly Sarah grabbed Jane’s head lightly and pulls her into a passionate kiss, giving her everything she had. Jane melts into Sarah but as the kiss broke she turned five different shades of red. Sarah simply smiled, grabbed Jane’s hand, her jacket, and walked towards the field. The Varsity boys soccer teams was now playing and Sarah knew the bleachers would be a good place to talk without intimidating her girl too much. With everyone around Jane would know that Sarah wouldn’t try anything too soon. Sarah leads Jane up the many steps to the very top and best spot in her opinion, to watch the game. They sit cautiously still holding hands unbeknownst to Jane.
“So…” Jane starts lamely.
Sarah quickly covers for her girls’ lack of speech, “What are you doing here” she blurts out.
“I…..umm…I just needed to see you…” Jane blushes and casts her eyes down.
“Sweetie, I…I love you” Jane begins, gaining confidence. “I just needed to come down here to prove it, really prove it. I know we have been talking every day about how we love only each other, forever but I needed to show you…” Jane leans to kiss Sarah gently, and its Sarah’s turn to blush profusely. Jane begins to tell Sarah about how she had earned a weeks vacation from work and decided that she could afford to miss the three days of college she would have that week, as she was already ahead in her classes. Seeing Jane’s story come to and end, Sarah begins to complain about how shitty her school can be sometimes.
“No one understands me here, Jane” Sarah states softly. “When I’m here I miss you all the more. I just wish…”
“Just wish what Hun” Jane interrupts, concern showing in her eyes.
“I…I just want to be with you…” Sarah mumbles. “I know that now, I was so scared…of us…of everything, no one here understands about us.” “ But I’ve realized, all I want is you, they don’t need to understand, just as long as I have you…always”…Sarah trailed off, her eyes becoming misty.
“Sarah, I…” Jane replied slowly.
“Hey Trouble” yelled a short girl with brown hair, “Who’s your friend.”
Sarah whispers quickly into Jane’s ear, “Shh is okay sweetie these are my friends, we can finish this later right?” Jane nodded slowly and smiled at the group of seniors approaching them.
