Thanks, SJ! :blush *giggle* I'm totally crushing over the most amazing woman right now...or is crushing something you do before you say I love you? Ah well...I'll always crush on her. More puppy-love poems to come, I assure you ;).

This one's for my baby, who is the first woman to truly understand me...I love you, baby...

Love’s Redemption

The woman I love is a lady of worth—
Full of mercy and kindness and gentle mirth.
What can a suitor give to her honorable Love
Worthy of only a gift from Above?
I’ve tried to take stock of Heaven’s treasury,
What riches its wispy cloud-covers enfold.
Perhaps life eternal, or sorrow’s delay?
Or beauty most mortals swoon to behold?
But none of these things are mine to endow;
Perhaps in my eyes the sorrow shows plain.
All I have is a scarred swath of years,
A life that’s hardly been meaningf’ly lived.
So while my hands may appear to be bare,
And while my pedigree’s stained and besmirched,
What I can give is my loving nows and todays,
And tomorrow’s promise of blessed rebirth!
—For in these seedlings of rapture lay
Enough joy and love to make us forget yesterday!—

Song to My Father

You were born a woman of the world, child,
And this ain’t nothin’ but a man’s world
Gotta make what you can of this big world, child
Gotta do right if you wanna marry a good man

What’s that child, you say you love a woman?
What’s that child, you say you love her?
Well, you’ve hardly looked outside the door, child,
There’s plenty of better men than her

You say you don’t wanna marry a man, child?
You say you wanna have her baby, too?
Well, a man can give you a baby with his body, child
And a home and a proper marriage, too

Remember that boy you loved in third grade, daughter?
Remember how he made you feel?
Well, a leopard can’t change His spots, child
No, a leopard can’t change His spots

You say you were brought up to love a man, child?
You say you were brought up to fit in?
Well, child, if we brought you up to be normal
What excuse do you have to be acting like this?

You say you found out you have your own life, child?
You say you found out what love is?
Well, it’s an illusion—no happiness that way
That kind of love ain’t what God intended

No, a leopard can’t change His spots, daughter
A leopard can’t change His spots
Well, father, I have news for you:
I LOVE HER AND WAS BORN A FUCKING ZEBRA!

Hi Jenny :wave

I read your poems and they jolted me out of my usual lazy lurkiness.
I was moved by your poems, your feelings spilling into every word making them so much larger, so more powerful than the literal meaning of them.

I loved your love poems, they made me smile happily, grin, chuckle and sometimes smile saddily. Yet there was something about Promise to Myself Upon Turning Twenty”, not a love poem, that made me take a longer moment to ponder it.

If I make myself this night a promise
To change my ways, amend, reform,
Be more confident, assertive, productive, healthy:
Will it still hold true tomorrow morn?
I think perhaps I’m finally ready
To become the woman I ought to be.

Ah, the promises made and broken to ourselves. The nightly analyzing of our faults and mistakes and the things that could and should have been.
The painfully hard slow change of ourselves. I thought you wrote it beautifully.

To make this long story short i loved your poems. So powerfull and honest. Keep writing when the muse calls out to you.

P.S. Yay for you being Zebra. You know what? Zebras rock :peace

Dreaming Upon a Photograph

I look at you—my heart beats with such love
I cannot number its pulse or its strength
The glint in your eyes, the sparkle of your smile
Run chills of fire all through my length
A blazing star upon this night’s horizon
You are the music that floods through my veins
A swell like the sea within my breast—
—Surging—till you are all that remains!
How wanton this great ecstasy!
How incendiary its delight!
That is the thought but to hold you and kiss you
And hear you beside me at night!

Hey guys! It's been awhile, but I've finally gotten the inspiration for another couple of poems! These are, as always, for my baby, who is my entire existence.... :luv :wtkiss :bigkiss :love :wtkiss :luv :luv2 :kiss2 Let me know what y'all think! :bounce :D :whip :blush

Love’s Perfection

I’m thinking that a kiss
Is two pairs of lips
Pressed together perfect—like this—
Or perhaps—even better—
It’s the soul, unfettered…
I’m think that perfection
Is the softness of your skin
And the pearly gates of Paradise
Are shining in your eyes as you grin
I’m feeling light as feather-down
—Your breath is my intoxicant—
My pulse has slowed to exclude all else
But the world you’ve wrapped me in
I’m beginning to wonder if this isn’t—
And, stop me if I haven’t got it right—
That feeling of exhilaration
That all-consuming delight
That is two beings come together
Into one in the night

Devotion

I feel you beating in the distance—ceaselessly
Like some ancient tribal drum
Thrumming with spiderwebs and dust—long untouched
Pounding out the rhythm of my people

You are my flesh and blood, my clay, my sacred earth
Tangible as the forest yet evanescent as a flame
Beyond all things of form and comprehension
You are my Great Beyond

I bow to you and kiss the dust
The dirt, the earth, the holy womb
And thank the midnight skies above
For preordaining our union

Once upon a time, before birds could fly
Or fish had fins to swim
Husbands tied their wives to huts of clay
Lest they return to their fathers’ clan

I look at the ring I wear by choice
The symbolic tether of our age
And think—not of running away
But of my feet carrying me
Steadily as the wind upon the distant mountains
Towards you, my everlasting home

Your body is my tribal lands
Your lips my anchor to this world
My bare feet are pounding the hard-packed earth
By night—I’m soaring over these strange lands
Back to my Origin and my soul’s essence
With only your heartbeat like a drum
Or some eternal blessing-chant
To guide me

Whenever We Two Part

Memories are fragile things, like cranes or birds or butterflies—
They do not take well to the rain of parting, but pale like watercolor dyes—
Their magical ink of reality dribbling down the page of passing days
Into some paler hue of dreaminess—those moments spent with you
Become an echo in our hearts like caves, resounding over and over,
Crashing down over us like waves upon the shore
And making us long to compare reality with our memories of before.
I pray, do not remember me in ways that I was not—
I cannot bear for you to make of me more than you really ought—
As for ways in which we loved together, I pray—with every ounce of hope I’ve got—
That the power of our love and its majesty may never be forgot!
