Summary: Nothing but a love story.

Chapter 1

I never knew what it felt like to love or to be loved, until I met you.

I always knew that when I felt it, when I could give it, it’d be heaven - and right I was.

So this is a little story about the first time we met...the first time I truly knew I was, indeed, alive.

- Serene.

If you told me that I were to fall in love with someone who fully loved me back, for who I was...I would’ve said that you were crazy. I wasn’t destined to be loved, it really wasn’t something that was written in my stars. I seriously would’ve laughed in your face and called you a liar.

But it wasn’t until the very first day of work...I just got a job at the library and I was excited but nervous at the same time. I’ve had a job before, but I was finally in a place where I felt comfortable. My supervisor just finished showing me things, and I knew it would take me a while to get know everything down, however since I visited the library every day, I pretty much knew where the books went.

“Excuse me.” A soft voice caught my attention, I blew the hair out of my eyes and looked up into the most gorgeous hazel eyes ever. “Um, can you help me?”

“Sure.” I smiled nervously.

“I wanted to check something online, but I don’t have a membership to use the computers.” She smiled softly.

I smiled and folded my hands up on the counter in front of me. “Well all first memberships are free, have you had one before?” She shook her head and lowered her gaze slightly. “Well you’re in luck, you can get a free one.”

“Thank you.” She smiled and tucked strands of hair behind her ear.

“What’s your name?” I asked, giddy inside because I’d be able to match a beautiful face to a beautiful name.

“Valentine Jades.” She licked her lips and pulled out some I.D.

“I believe you.” I responded softly, typing her name into the computer. “Beautiful name.” I grinned boldly, handing her a temporary membership card to use. “The official one should be here in a few weeks, if I can have your number, we can call you and let you know.”

“Sure.” Valentine gave me her number and gave me her thanks before walking over to one of the computers. Her long shiny brown hair flowed so beautifully and that smile that graced upon that pretty face.

“Serene!” I heard my name being called and I turned around to see my older sister standing at the desk impatiently. “Finally, I’ve only been trying to get your attention for the past seven minutes.”

I smiled sweetly and looked at my sister. “I’m sorry Lydia, I was in seven minutes of heaven.” I giggled when she rose her eyebrow at me. “What are you doing here anyway, libraries are like, your worst enemy.”

“I need a favour.” She tapped her fingers on the counter top. “Steven asked me out but his cousin just moved here from the East side and he was asked to help her out.”

“And I come in...where?”

“Help her out.”

“I don’t even know her!” I began to grab a piles of books and moved around the counter and into the stacks of shelves.

“All the reason to go and get to know her.” Lydia smiled and placed her hand on my shoulder. “Please?” She begged and pouted.

“Lyd, how many times do I have to do this sort of things for you?” I grumbled and gave in. “Fine. But if her and I get into a brawl and we don’t click, I’m blaming you.”

“Yea, yea.” She kissed me one the cheek and brushed passed me before yanking me back and hiding behind me.

“What?” I hissed as she pointed towards a tall young man in beige khakis and a black t-shirt. “Who’s that?”

“Steven.”

I had to admit that the guy was rather good looking. “Cute.” I whispered.

“Exactly.” Lydia straightened herself out and brushed her hair back a bit. “I’m going to try and sneak out without him seeing me.”

“Why? And why did you make yourself presentable if you’re not going to speak to him?” I smirked and placed a few more books on their shelf.

“Yes, well you’ll understand when you get- hey! Who’s he talking too?” Lydia’s voice dropped into, more of a jealous tone.

I looked in her direction and saw the guy leaning over that girl who took my breath away. And how cheesy is that? I barely know this woman, and she’s already occupying a part of my heart. “Um, maybe she’s his...sister?” I bit my lip, in hopes that I was a tad right.

“He doesn’t have any sisters, or other siblings for that matter.” Lydia frowned.

I shrugged, biting my bottom lip in question. I watched as this Steven guy made her giggled. Her. Valentine. Remind me to ask her about her name.

“I have to go.” Lydia was about to make a quick exit but was stopped by Steven. “Lydia, I didn’t know you were here.”

“Oh.” Lydia stopped in her tracks and turned around, faking a smile. “I was just leaving actually.”

“Really? I guess I’ll see you tonight.” He flashed his gorgeous smile. I tried really hard not to look or show that I was listening.

“My sister said she’ll help your cousin get settled in.” Lydia spoke with soft ease.

“Great!” Steven chuckled.

“Um, Serene...” I heard her say my name and I looked at her.

“You called?” I flashed a small smile.

“Yes, Steven, this is my sister Serene, Serene, meet Steven.”

I shook his hand and looked back at my sister. I could tell she still had questions about the relationship between him and the woman he was leaning over - so did I. It’s funny how one can get jealous so fast over a stranger.

“Nice to meet you.”

“Likewise.” I smiled.

“Oh, well since you’re here, I can introduce you to my cousin. Val?” Steven watched as Val made her way over and smiled. “This is Serene, my date tonight and her sister Serene.”

I watched my sister’s face relax as she really smiled that time and I knew that my face was doing the same. They were cousins, thank the Gods. “Nice to meet you, again.” I chuckled a bit.

“Yes, again, but I never got your name before.” Her smile was so beautiful. “Nice to meet you Serene.” Her voice dropped slightly. Oh heavens, why did she have to say my name like that? I was melting inside.

“Well I have to head back to work, I’ll catch up with you ladies later.” Steven leaned in and kissed Lydia on the cheek before leaving.

“I gotta go too.” She smirked and gave me a brief hug.

I looked around and found that it was just me and Valentine. “So...looks like it’s just me and you tonight.” I whispered.

“Me and you?” She looked so confused.

“Oh...Steven didn’t tell you?” I blushed and looked down. “Um, I was asked if I’d keep you company tonight.” I smiled softly and bit my lip.

“Well I am so happy.” She burst out. “I don’t know really have any friends here, so I was afraid I’d be left alone.”

“Like I said, it’s just you and me tonight.” I grinned and reached out to touch her arm briefly.

“I’m looking forward to it.” She replied and smiled. “Here, I’ll give you my address.” She searched for a pen and we both laughed when we realized we were standing in the middle of the library.

“Here.” I took her hand and walked her towards the main counter, reaching over I grabbed a pen.

“Thanks.” Val smiled softly and wrote her address down on a piece of paper. “There you go.”

“Thank you.”

“I should get back to...the computer.”

We hesitated for a moment - neither of us wanting to break that contact. But I had work to do and she had work to do so I decided to break the silent spell. “I’ll see you tonight then?”

“I hope so.” She flashed a beautiful smirk and turned to walk away.

Valentine.

I was looking forward to getting to know more about her, and I couldn’t wait.

Hey Holly! :bigwave

:shock

Wow. Wow. WOW.

The first couple of lines of the story already blew me away, so you can pretty much imagine that I was out of the roof of my house by the time I was done reading the entire thing, so excuse me while I make a trip back down to earth again. And as I'm doing that, I'll have to resort to adjectives to describe your writing for now :lol

One word Holly - Beautiful.

Thanks for sharing your work, I'm looking forward to reading more soon :)

I think I might be psychic since when Lydia mentioned wanting Serene to look after Steven's cousing I wondered if it was going to turn out to be Valentine.

Ok... I am definitely hooked:D

I am intrigued by Val and Serene.....

Serene seems shy..kind of the quiet type, but also with a bit of quick wit to her credit. She's going to be quite interesting to follow. I definitely want to know mare about what makes her tick.. and since the story is from her POV.. yay me! Looks like I will be getting that:D

Valentine Jades....

The name intrigues me because its could almost be interpreted as Love Hurts.....and so I definitely am looking forward to getting to know more about her. She seems interested in Serene.. but it's too soon to tell if its a friendly interest or something more intimate. It will be fun following along and seeing what develops there:)

What's also floating around in this head of mine is how much time they will have. Val is visiting her cousin.. but we don't know how long she's staying, where she is from, how far away it is. Will this be a love thats tested by long distance? Or will Val be there for good?

You have written stories with both major angst (Tainted) and major happy feelings (Never A Night Like This). I can't wait to see where this story falls:D

Looking forward to more!

This is a wonderful start, Holly. Now I'm all curious about these girls - their ups, their downs, their ideas about love. This story has hooked me right away. There are so many directions where you can take us. Please continue.

Replies :)

Marina: Dude!! My wonderful loyal fan :D Awww, I promise to not try and change your opinions. :lol Thank you though, seriously. Your opinion and what you think means the world to me, so thank you. *hugs* Love ya dude.

Cassie: WOW. You really like this? :blush I’ve been wanting to post an Original story for the longest time, but I wasn’t sure how exactly things would’ve turned out. I hope you enjoy the next part just as much :D And thank you for reading. :)

justin: Hehe, yes go you! Valentine is very much the person Lydia was referring too. We’ll have to see where things go with Serene and Valentine...ya never know. Thanks for reading :D

sammi: Awww, thank you. :blush I’m glad you enjoyed :D Thank you.

Scarlette: Right, you never beg or bug for updates...not you. :p :D As long as you’re patient, I promise to work on this and another story some more. :D Thank you for reading and and posting feedback, means a lot. :D :flower

Cindi: My insight-o gal :D Always working these stories in your head and analyzing them...I love it. :D I love the name Valentine Jades... this has been something that’s been going though my head for years now...yes, years. :lol I had like this whole script thing made up and it just got pushed back in the back of my mind and was forgot about. Now...it’s back and I must get it out. The way I see it is that if a story is forgotten but comes back, then it must have potential :lol and if I never remember it again, then it wasn’t worth it. :D So thank you for letting me know what you think and just helping me get through it all. You’ve been much help. :flower

Aaron: :D I like to see you grin...it’s sweet. And you are a sweetie, April will back me up on that one. :p Thank you for reading this and I will give another update as soon as I’m done updating my other W/T Baby, There’s Always Tomorrow fic. :D Or maybe sooner... whichever comes first. Thanks again. :)

Mike: I shall continue and I’m glad you’re intrigued with this. My only concern is that I’m worried I might not get Valentine’s point of views across because of Serene narrating the story...I may just have a part where Val has a POV...we’ll see. Thanks again for reading. :)

Thank you all. :) More soon.

Summary: Nothing but a love story.

Chapter 2/?

I never understood why people got so worked up over the busiest time of the day or night. Traffic was never a big deal to us in this small town, I mean seriously, nine thousand people is not that many people. But everyone always seemed to get worked up during "rush hour". Call me crazy, but I like being stuck in the middle of "traffic" after work or after classes or after visiting. I can blast my music in the car and sing away, not caring who heard me or who was watching. I mean it’s traffic and I’m bored so I’m going to sing. Yup, you can definitely call me crazy.

Today however, was different. I had to be somewhere and I needed to get home so I could change and get things ready...but there was, yes, traffic. I honked my horn a few times when people starting cutting me off, and I’m not one of those mad drivers - I just needed to be somewhere.

Rushing into the house, I heard my mother calling my name from the back pantry. "Serene? Your sister called and said that you’re to be at Val’s in an hour."

An hour?!? "Thanks!" I yelled and ran up the stairs and started to strip my clothes off. Christ, I needed to find out what I was going to wear and how I was going to do my hair. It’s not easy taking care of long hair, but I refuse to cut it.

After fifteen minutes of fussing about what I’m going to wear, I realized that Valentine may not even be interested in women. Duh! Serene, just because you are attracted to them, it doesn’t mean everyone is attracted to you...especially Valentine. So I never bothered worrying about my clothes and just threw on a pair of jeans and a nice fitted black sweater.

"What is that sister of yours putting you up to this time?" My mom asked as I came downstairs with a brush in hand.

"She has a date." I said, brushing my hair.

"And why does she need you? Is she setting you up again?"

Right, I wish. Lydia setting me up with Valentine...of all the times my sister has asked me to go on dates with her or be a ‘decoy’ she chooses Valentine to be a friend and a friend only. "Nope, not this time." I smiled. "I’ll tell you about it later."

"Okay." She softly smiled and patted me on the head. "And your father called today, he wants you to call him when you get the chance."

I rolled my eyes...my father wants me to call him...funny. My dad left us when we were young, not for another woman, not because he was "bored" but because he was married to his job more than he was a father or husband. He made this whole speech about how it wouldn’t be fair to us if he stayed and never gave is the attention we deserved. Then he remarried another woman, had a child with her and got bored so he left them. That is my father.

"I gotta go, I’ll call him before I go to work tomorrow." I grabbed my coat, purse and car keys and took off out the door.

I finally found the address Valentine gave me, I looked up and noticed the place was a guest house and was surrounded by a small white picket fence. Cute.

Fixing my hair and clothes, I finally lifted my hand to knock on the door. Taking a deep breath, I exhaled rather loudly when she opened the large wooden door. ‘Wow.’ Her hair was pulled back and her long smooth neck was exposed with a chain draped around it, a pendant resting between her collarbone. "Hi." I smiled.

"Serene." Her voice was like a soft ballad and she was singing my name. "Come in." She stepped aside and let me in. "Did you find the place okay?"

I turned and face her, smiling as I nodded. "I did, this place is so cute." I think she forgot that I lived here, I knew this town like the back of my hand.

"You live here, of course you didn’t have a hard time." She put her head down shyly and I couldn’t help but smirk as a blush crawled upon her neck.

"Hey, it’s okay, it’s um, not everyday a beautiful woman such as yourself, gives me her address and let’s me come over." I wasn’t sure where the boldness was coming from but it was there and I was afraid I had scared her away or at least put myself in the situation where she’d kick me out at any point.

"It’s not everyday a beautiful woman such as yourself, accepts." She looked at me and that smile, Oh Gods that smile, melted me all over again.

"So you um, ask often?" I smirked.

Valentine held my gaze, almost teasingly before sighing. "Well...would it scare you away if I asked all beautiful brunettes?...Cause I love brunettes."

"Damn." I muttered cheekily. "I work with a lot of brunettes."

Valentine laughed and ushered me into the small kitchen area. "Want anything to drink?" She asked.

"Water is fine." I looked around and noticed that there were some unpacked boxes piled up by the small kitchen table. "Moving in?" I teased.

Valentine smiled and nodded. "Yea, I got this job at the newspaper place, writing columns."

"You’re a journalist?" I asked in awe, it was something I’ve always wanted to do.

"Sort of." Her head ducked down slightly. "I have a few more courses to finish up."

"Well that’s cool." I smiled and sat down on a wooden chair.

"My family is cool, they’re letting me stay here rent free until I get up on my own feet." Val grinned. "My mom, dad and I don’t get along that much. My auntie and uncle raised me growing up."

"Oh." I licked my lips while casting her a sorry glance.

"It’s okay." Valentine sat down and gave me some water. "What about you? Any plans other than the library?"

I grinned. "College in the fall."

"Excuse me if I’m being rude, but how old are you?" Val smirked.

"I’m going into my fourth year of college."

"So...?"

"I’ll be twenty-two in a few weeks." I blushed slightly. I’m sitting in this gorgeous woman’s kitchen and dare I even say or think that she’s flirting with me? That smirk is so devilishly sexy...and by Gods she’s looking at me again.

"It’s only fair that you ask me the same question." I heard her say with a soft smile. Can you even hear a soft smile? If not, then I’m pretty sure I did. I could tell she was trying to make me feel at ease, right, like she couldn’t see me blushing from a mile away.

I always try to be outgoing and talkative with other people around, and I’m usually good at not blushing, but it seems so hard right now. "Well, as a lady, I shall just say that your beauty works for you and leave it at that." I looked up into her gentle eyes and saw them wide with wonder. Crap Serene, why do you always do this? "I-I’m sorry." I muttered, lowering my gaze again.

"Don’t be." She grinned and patted the top of my hand. "Wish I thought of that line."

I giggled lightly and tried not to move my hand where hers was resting - I wanted to keep the contact for as long as I could. Her skin was so soft and light. Why am I gushing about a stranger? Sighs, I’m only here to keep Valentine company, nothing more, nothing less. "So um, did you want help unpacking anything?" I asked, standing up and regrettably pulling my hand away from hers.

"I’m going to do all this tomorrow." She sighed and stood up beside me. "But thank you for the offer."

I smiled lightly and shrugged. "The least I can do while I’m here. I’m trying not to bore things too much for you."

"Are you kidding me?" Valentine had the hugest grin on her face. "Serene, I’m having a blast."

Probably the one and only time I’ll ever thank my parents for calling me Serene. "You are?"

"Absolutely."

"Okay, well, what did you want to do now?" I asked, feeling all excited again.

"Watch TV?" She asked, walking past me and into the small living room. "Luckily the guest house came with all cable channels."

"All?" I smirked, sitting next to her on the love seat couch.

"All." She laughed and turned on the TV. "Maybe my uncle or cousin come in here to watch TV, they were pretty bummed when my aunt said that I could keep all channels."

"Right, cause you won’t watch any of that stuff." I teased.

"Not yet anyway." She threw me a glance and smirked.

I swallowed. I was having these feelings I’ve never had before...I’ve dated yes, a hundred times if you want to count all the blind dates and set-ups Lydia has put me on - since I was thirteen. But I’ve only ever had the one boyfriend and one girlfriend. Mark and Jill. Not at the same time of course, I’m a one woman kinda person.

Mark was my very first real relationship, I was seventeen and I met him at my friend’s birthday party. We clicked instantly and developed a close friendship before anything else. Then he asked me out and I couldn’t say no, I couldn’t deny the fact that we had something great going on, whether it lasted or not, I wanted to be in that moment where things felt right with the world. It didn’t last though, obviously, if I’m here ‘drooling’ over Valentine. He wanted to take things further after a year of dating, and I just wasn’t ready. So he broke things off saying he wanted a stronger commitment...I was totally heartbroken and was about to give in with what he wanted, but my dear friend Jill, helped me out by telling me a guy like that, isn’t worth a heartache. And he wasn’t.

Jill was very outgoing, very opposite of me. She was a ball full of energy and just couldn’t sit still. At nineteen, she dragged me out to a club for my first legal drink and we just danced the night away...and I was drunk. I woke up the next morning in her bed, with soft flannel pyjamas on me and a wash cloth over my forehead. I looked over and saw Jill passed out on the couch, sleeping rather peacefully. So I got up and made her coffee while she was stirring awake. She had told me that I had way too much to drink and took me home to sleep it off and there we were, sitting underneath the soft blanket that was draped around her body and she leaned in to kiss me. Ah yes, Jill...she may have been a wild girl at heart, but she was also very sweet and romantic. She swooned me everyday since that day in the apartment and I actually moved in with her for six months - which was our first mistake. Did I mention we were opposites? We were attracted to each other, but we just didn’t attract. I moved back in with my mom and found a job, which brings me here.

It’s been almost a year since I became single again, aside from awful set-ups my sister pulls on me. This time though, I’m going to have to thank her. I smiled and leaned my head back against the couch.

"What?" Valentine smiled and brushed a loose strand of hair away from my eyes. "You’re sighing and smiling...what’s going on in that head of yours?"

I didn’t even realize she was watching me and I don’t think I could turn any redder than I was at that moment. "Nothing, just, um...thinking."

"About?" Her fingers still playing with a strand of my hair.

"Valentine...your name, how’d you get your name?" I looked over at her and melted again when she smiled.

"My parents...I was born on Valentine’s day and they thought it’d be cute to name me Valentine." She shrugged, her eyes casting down to the material of the couch.

"It is." I whispered. "Cute I mean. Valentine is unique and I like that."

Her eyes moved up slowly and caught my gaze. "Serene is beautiful." She murmured and I blushed. "So is your name." She grinned shyly.

Wow. Oh heavens, wow. She called me beautiful. Okay Serene, calm down. "Thank you, so are you." I smiled and went back to watching the TV. My heart was pounding so hard in my chest and I wished that this night would not end.

Valentine called me beautiful.

Wow.

Wow. Oh heavens, wow. She called me beautiful. Okay Serene, calm down. "Thank you, so are you." I smiled and went back to watching the TV. My heart was pounding so hard in my chest and I wished that this night would not end.

Valentine called me beautiful.

Wow.

Holly!!! :bounce :bounce :bounce

You ended this update with a 'Wow.' and I'm gonna say right back at ya girl! ;)

I loved the way you wrote the scene out, love your writing style, very captivating, very engaging, keep me all hooked on Serene's train of thoughts and what's going up there in that head of hers.

And as for Valentine, I'm very intrigued by her character (maybe it's cause I don't know what's going on in her head unlike Serene :lol ) and I keep thinking of her as like tough on the outside, but with a softer side that seems very obvious in the way she communicates with Serene.

All in all, this was a lovely update and I really enjoyed reading it, keep up the great work Holly and looking forward to more soon, please? :flirt

This was really nice.

I have always loved your characters...you have this knack for taking characters with troubled pasts and heartaches and weaving an incredibly sweet love story between them. I love that because life isn't all fluffy and fairy tales..but from time to time it does give us people and relationships and situations that seem to make up for all the bad and ugly stuff in the world we deal with every day.

The best part is that the bad stuff seems to not matter anymore.. and it kinda fades away from memory. For example, Hadley is so cute and bouncy and just adorable and loving and everyone wants one. And I bet that just about everyone who read NANLT completely forgot the circumstances that brought her into this world.

So I really liked this peek into Serene's home life, her troubles with her father and her past relationships. She talks about her Dad with a cool and distant tone.. you can almost see her shrug when she talks about how her Dad left not only her family, but his second wife and their child as well. She's moved on and accepted things..but there is still that bit of feeling that has turned from anger and pain to casual indifference...ouch.

And her past relationships..*giggles*

Hey.. those had some wistful sighs there...looking back at what made her fall in the first place.. those ultra sweet moments when you feel your heart just kinda melt and you know you are hooked.. or have been truly touched. And then a quick followup with the very things that brought them to an end. I especially liked the bit with Jill... reminding everyone that she had mentioned already that they were opposites. It's funny... so many times you can look back at failed relationships and you realize that the thing that broke you up was something you already knew about. Maybe they were cheaters and you thought it wouldn't happen to you, or you were complete opposites with awesome chemistry who couldn't get along in the end. It's like we all have this switch when we start to fall in love that covers our eyes and whispers in our ear that things will be different with us.

The flirtation...oh wow.

This was nice.. and I loved the boldness coming from each of the girls. She's moving in.. YAY! So there is a real chance of something long term here. *big smiles*

And Val definitely seems interested in Serene.. which is awesome..as long as her intentions are good.

She seems like a sweet girl, but we are just getting to know her. She could have a wide path of exes behind her...all with their hearts torn out and stomped flat.

Sorry.. i'm just really becoming protective of Serene already:) And hey! Val *does* live in a lil cute house with a white picket fence......that gets ALLLLL the cable channels.. lifetime supply of porn there.

Appearences can definitely be deceiving.

Looking forward to more!

Thank you Kittens, for reading and/or leaving feedback. :D I should have another chapter up in a few days or less. Again, thanks. :)

Scarlette: Yes, very much Romeo and Juliet-ish...only it’s more of a Juliet and Juliet-ish :D With absolutely no dying at the end. :| That may be um...it may defeat the purpose of a love story...not a tragic one. :D Thank you for reading! You’re always so supportive :D

Marina: Ya know dude, it always amazes me how much you can just, make me blush and feel good about myself. :) Thank you. You’ve always been there to tell me what you think and you’re honest about it, I love that about you. One of the many things that amaze me about you, thank you again. :D And dude...I love ya too! :D

bindingwiccan: Me? Cute? :blush nah... sometimes the writing can be deceiving ;) nevertheless, thank you Kelsey. :D I hope you’ll like the next update as well. Thank you for reading :D

justin: The flirting between Serene and Valentine was fun to write... I tried to make it subtle, I’m hoping I did at least half that. :D Thank you for reading!

Cass: :blush :blush :blush Wow. Heh. Thank you. I’m very much liking the fact that you like this story. I sort of like keeping Valentine a small mystery, although, you’ll probably get a chance to see Valentine’s point of view on Serene and as well as how her own life is. :D Much patience from you and I’ll go and grab the next update soon, Thank you for reading and making me blush. :p

sammi: Thank you :D I was hoping to capture the adorable and beautiful side of a beginning of this new friendship/relationship.

Aaron: Hey! Puppies? Awww, yes, it’ll take puppies for me to get another update up :whistle ... one of my weak spots, I absolutely love puppies. :D But just having you as a loyal reader, I’ll get an update up asap (also, you were the only one who ever offered to give me puppies :D ) Thank you Aaron! You Rock!

Renee: Thank you, I’m glad you’re liking it so far. :D

Gina: Awww, thank you :D And not too many ‘and’s’ ... cause bring ‘em on. :D The more ‘and’s’, the better. (And if ‘and’s’ isn’t a word, you made it one :D ) Again, thank you.

Cindi: Wow. *clears her throat* Okay, I’m not sure if my reply will be as long as your feedback, :D Hmm, let me just say that you should not need to worry about Valentine too much. As for Serene, she’s been through a rough time that we all know of, between her father and then her past relationships, I’m sure either she’s gonna fall so hard for Valentine and be blind by everything else, or she’ll be extra careful around Valentine, despite how strongly she feels, because she’s been hurt so badly in her other relationships. I dunno...I guess we’ll have to see. :) Anyway, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, you’re my insight-o gal, and I love you for it. :D Thank you sweetie.

April: CCR! :D oouu a Holly groupie dance...too cool. :lol Hehe, you’re totally in love this little fic? (Sorry Arron ;) ) :lol , nah, but seriously, thank you. :) It means a lot. :D

Nickole: Awww, I did not bull whip you...did I?? Opsi, sorry :blush Moving and heart grabbing huh? :D Mission accomplished. And you know I only work with my heart and nothing less. :) I hope that you continue to be inspired, not just by me, but all the great things life has to offer you. Our friendship will always be something of the unique and special kind :D Thank you for reading!! And it’s always a pleasure to read feedback from you :D Thank you.

Holly – you have a new member in your fan club. I absolutely _love_ (admire, envy, heavy emphasis on the envy) the way you so easily make your story come together. It’s clear and focused with witty, sharp dialogue. I love the set up for this story, and the boldness of your characters. You’ve really captured the sense of that first, heart palpitating, ‘I’ll swear off chocolate for the rest of my life if I get to see you again,’ moment. Your characters are dynamic and very real which makes the story a pleasure to read.

I’m looking forward to more.

Cheers!!

Title: Valentine, My Love

Chapter: 3/?

Author: Holly aka Taras Shadow

Rating: R

Disclaimer: All characters belong to me.

Summary: Nothing but a love story.

~Chapter 3~

****

"Are you still sleeping?" Lydia sat at the end of my bed after opening the shades to let the morning light shine through.

"I got home three hours ago," I mumbled into my pillow, a small smile creeping across my face. I spent most of the night with Valentine, watching old movies and just talking. It was so great that we lost track of time and I still had to be up for work. Work! "Holy shit, I’m late for work." I sprang up from my bed and hurried to grab my clothes.

"I was going to say, why are you still in bed when it’s only your second day of work," Lydia eyed me up suspiciously. "What happened with you and Valentine last night?" she raised an eyebrow.

"Nothing happened, we watched movies and talked," I said, changing my shirt. "Please Lyd, save it until after I get off work. I’m late and I can’t argue with you properly right now." I smiled and kissed her on the cheek before taking off towards the washroom.

"Serene, someone dropped this off." My mom handed me an envelope as I rushed out the door.

"Thanks," I said hurriedly, stuffing the envelope into my pocket.

Traffic was great for me, I was already fifteen minutes late but the streets were still pretty calm. Usually I love these types of mornings when I can look at the early sunrise and bright skies. But this morning, I just wanted to get my work done and crawl back into bed and dream of more late nights with Valentine.

"Serene, you’re twenty minutes late," my supervisor raised an eyebrow.

"Sorry Mr. Richards," I apologized, hanging my coat over the chair and signing in my name.

"Just don’t make it a habit," he said walking away.

I sighed with relief and sat down in my chair, logging onto the computer to begin doing overdue charges and indexing files and such.

"Serene."

I looked up and noticed Lydia waggling her eyebrows at me.

"For God’s sake Lydia, I’m at work," I whispered.

"Right. And I’m at your work, looking for a book," Lydia smirked.

"It’s only after nine in the morning, and you already want to try and jump start that tiny brain of yours?" I smiled and stood up. "What kind of book are you looking for?"

"One about little sisters hiding secrets from their older sisters." Lydia’s lip curled in a small grin.

"Lydia! I thought you were serious," I huffed and sat back down. "How about you come back around my lunch break and I’ll give you boring details then, okay?"

"Fine." Lydia shrugged and took off out the doors. Sometimes my sister was just too much for me. She made it a habit to come into my workplace and press for details of what happened on the dates she sets me up on - but I think she’s forgetting that last night was definitely not a date she had set me up on.

After about three hours of running around the library stacks, putting books where they belong and answer many phone calls, I was able to sit back down behind the desk and rest my feet. Looking at the clock, I was getting excited inside knowing it was my lunch break soon. I thought I’d take a walk across the street and grab some fries from the Chip Truck, if I had my money. I left so fast that morning, I barely remember if I grabbed the right coat with my change in it.

When I went to look for my change, I found that note my mom had given me. Smiling, I opened it up and sat back, reading it. Forgetting about lunch and change.

Dear Serene,

I do mean what I say, when I tell you that you have a beautiful name.

I wanted to thank you for keeping me company all night, I just wish we could’ve crashed once it got too late. But I knew that you had work and I had some more running around to do. I figured since you couldn’t sleep in late, I’d get up too and spend the day walking around like a zombie with you.

I hope we get to spend more nights like that together. You’re amazing company to have around and I wanted to thank your sister for convincing you to hang out with me.

Yours Truly,

-Valentine

Wow. Why does my heart and brain reduce to one syllable when it comes to Valentine? But hey! She sent me a letter, that was just so sweet of her.

"Kay lil sis, it’s you and me, now," Lydia came in through the doors, tapping at her watch. "I know it has to be your lunch break around this time, so no getting out of it."

I threw my head back and groaned a bit. "Fine," I mumbled, grabbing my coat, "but you’re paying."

"Fine," she looped her arm through mine as I waved bye to my coworker. "Where’d you want to go?"

"Anywhere," I said, walking down the street with my sister. "So why are you so interested in hearing what happened last night?"

"Please, like you don’t know," Lydia grinned and opened the door to some Italian restaurant. "Mom called my place and said you weren’t home yet, and that was around two-thirty in the morning."

"We were just watching movies," I honestly said. "Lyd, seriously, after what happened with Jill, don’t you think I’d be able to hold back a little?" I raised an eyebrow.

"That’s just it," she sighed and looked at me seriously. "Do you even remember how hard it was for you to get over Jill?"

I frowned. "I’m over her."

"I know Serene, but I’m just...okay, I just don’t want you getting hurt again, that’s all," Lydia opened her menu after we were seated.

"Why would I get hurt? This wasn’t a date you set me up on Lydia, it was just taking someone off of your date’s hands for a while."

"She totally thinks your hot," Lydia snickered. "Steven called me just before I got your place this morning, and told me that Valentine was just too blown away by you."

"Oh," my eyes went wide. "She...she talked to Steven about me?"

"Yup," her eyes looked at me. "Just be careful okay?"

I only nodded and went back to looking at my menu. "Wh-what did she say?" I licked my lips and swallowed hard.

It was a whole other ball game now, my feelings for Valentine were my own thing to deal with - but now there’s a real chance that she has an interest in me and it changes the whole thing. How can I possibly flirt subtly now? I just know that I’m going to have to be careful with this one. Lydia’s right, whether I want her to be or not. Being with Jill and getting over her was so hard, I don’t want to put myself through that again, nor do I want to put Valentine through that either.

"She said that your company was just amazing," Lydia smiled at me. "She seems interested..."

My luck. She seems interested. Seems. That word gives me both doubt and hope. "I just met her," I grinned, blushing.

Lydia laughed. "And? Serene, you’re entitled to have a crush."

"Just...be careful right?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, please. I hate seeing my little sister in so much heartache," she said sincerely.

I nodded slowly and took a sip of my water. "So what are your plans for today?"

* * * *

"How was work?" my mom asked me as I walked in the house.

"Good," I mumbled sleepily, sitting on the soft cushiony chair. "Ah, softness," I breathed, laying my head back as my eyes closed.

"You didn’t get in until late..."

I squinted at my mom with one eye open and sighed, a small smile tugging at my lips. "I’m just going to apologize if I woke you up."

My mother just shook her head and went back to watching the TV. She was truly a great person, inside and out - very strong. After my dad left her, she decided it was time to really become independent and grab herself a job she knew she’d love.

She really looked out for Lydia and I. Her intentions always came from the heart and she always wanted the best for us. Her support for Lydia’s many relationships and mine were unbelievable, even though she didn’t like half of them because of the many heartbreaks we’d come home with.

"Hey mom, how come you never shielded us from heartaches?" I asked, sitting straighter in my chair.

"Life is about heartaches, Serene," she looked at me and rose an eyebrow. "Why? Did you get your heart broken again?"

I chuckled. "No, no heart breakage done within the last...fourteen hours."

"If life was full of nothing but happiness, there’d be nothing left on earth to learn." she grinned.

That’s my mom, always taking life as it comes and wanting to learn some things the hard way.

"I think I’m going to go to bed early," I stood up and hugged her briefly. "I should be up as the sun rises."

I said my goodnights to my mother and raced up the stairs. But once I reached my room, I no longer felt tired - I felt giddy. I smiled and sat on my bed, reaching over to grab Valentine’s number. She is just so...beautiful...inside and out. Her heart is so loving, the way she talks about her family, her friends back at home, and she’s an animal lover, however, she’s not exactly a vegetarian either. Valentine.

I debated on whether to call her or not but I might sound to eager. So I decided against it and sat back on my bed and stared at the ceiling. It wasn’t even dark out yet, the sun still shone through my room window but I could feel exhaustion starting to take over.

Sweetest dreams to me.

****

"Serene!"

I groaned when I heard my name being called, I opened my eyes and found my room dark. What time was it?

"Serene...someone is at the door," my mom came in and shook me a bit. "It’s only after eight, why don’t you get up for a bit."

"Who is it?" I asked sleepily, sitting up slowly and rubbing my eyes.

"Some young woman," she replied, walking out of the room.

I shook my head and stood up stretching. I giggled at myself when I saw how wrinkled my shirt was from sleeping in it. Quickly, I threw on a new one and walked downstairs.

I think I literally stopped at the last step when I noticed who was standing at the door talking with my mother. Valentine. My heart sped up a bit when she looked at me and smiled. "Hi," I swallowed and immediately remembered that I probably have bedhead.

Valentine smiled and excused herself from my mom and met me at the bottom of the stairs. "I’m sorry," she blushed, she is so adorable. "I didn’t mean to wake you."

"Oh, no, that’s fine. I had to get up anyway or else it would’ve been another all nighter again for me," I chuckled nervously. "Not that I’m complaining about being up all night." I hurriedly said.

She smirked and ran her fingers through her hair. "So, would you like to join me for a coffee?"

I licked my lips and felt the tips of my ears go red. Valentine was asking me out. Well not out as in a date, but out at least - and I was blushing. "Sure," I grinned and nodded up the stairway. "Just let me um, freshen up."

Valentine nodded and never broke eye contact with me as I tried to make it up the stairs backwards.

I brushed my hair and my teeth quickly. Even though I’ve only been sleeping for a few hours, I couldn’t help but feel paranoid that my breath was just...ick. Valentine deserves freshness.

Climbing back down the stairs, I found my crush where I left her exactly. She looked at me and smiled softly, holding out her hand as I reached the last step. "So, where’d you like to go?" she asked me, as I shut the door behind us.

"There’s a nice little coffee shop not far from here," I said, still swimming in a giant pool of giddiness as our hands were still laced together.

"Cool," she opened the passenger side door for me and waited until I was fully in before shutting it.

I tried to stay calm, I really did. But this beautiful woman stopped on my doorstep asking me out for a coffee, holding the door open for me and wow, her skin is so soft. Her hand is so delicate. She can hold my hand any day.

"Or there is a place on Main Street," I looked over at her as she started the car. "It’s like a coffee shop plus bar and grill."

"Really?" Valentine smiled and pulled out onto the road.

"Yes, pool tables, couches, music, a dance floor and various arcade games," I laughed.

"Well, we should go there, have a coffee or whatever," her side glance at me sent shivers down my spine. "Maybe play a game of pool."

"You’re not one of those pool sharks are you?" I teased.

"Nope, can’t say I am," Val rose an eyebrow as she continued watching the road. "Are you?"

I blushed. "I’ve played a few times, but I’m not an expert."

"Can you teach me?" she stopped at a red light and looked at me.

I melted yet again. Damn, I might as well stay a puddle. Hmm, double meaning there much?

"If you’re patient."

"Oh, I can be patient," she smiled.

"Then yes, I can teach you." I bit my lip without looking at her, but I could feel her eyes on me before the light changed green. Does she really like me the way I like her? I should really be careful though, I don’t think I could stand another heartache.

"Serene, thank you for wanting to join me tonight," Valentine said as she parked the car. "You really didn’t have too."

"I know I didn’t have too," I whispered, watching her smile shyly. "Thank you for asking me."

She sat took the keys out of the ignition and waggled her eyebrows at me. "Ready to go have some fun?"

Of course! "Yes, let’s."

I opened the door and waited until she reached the sidewalk. I held out my arm for her to grab, but she surprised me and took my hand instead. My heart fluttered again.

I couldn’t wait to see how this night was going to fold out - with Valentine.
