Possibly a novel...eventually.

So here's the first part of an idea I'm considering expanding. Feedback appreciated like crazy. Tell me what you think.

Random Untitled Notion

The vampire had been hunting them for days. At first they had believed it was just wildlife, then a prank by some of the older boys. But then Jamie had gone missing. They had searched the areas nearby, but the forest was huge, and night had rolled in quickly. They returned to the safety of the campsite, to find Jamie sitting by the fire, alive but not well. A clear hand-shaped bruise was wrapped around his neck and he seemed to be in a catatonic state of panic, unable to respond to them. They had spent the night attempting to get through to him but had failed, and as soon as dawn broke they packed up the campsite and headed home. Jamie had come docilely enough, but upon reaching the edge of the clearing had frozen and screamed. Unable to calm him, Rachel, Lilah and Thomas had stayed with him while the other two went ahead for help. Night had fallen again when a strange man entered their campsite. Jamie had screamed even more frantically than before. The man had taken him by the throat and drained him, right in front of his stunned companions. Dropping his corpse to the floor, he had spoken.

“You humans know so little of yourselves. Your names, even. Rachel, the innocent lamb, Thomas, the twin, and Lilah… the night. How appropriate.”

And it had been. After the vampire had left, they had agreed to stay by the fire, constructing makeshift weapons until the sun came up and they could leave. It had done them no good. Thomas had died identically to Jamie, down to his screams. Lilah and Rachel had huddled in the clearing, to terrified to move even when the sun came up. The next night, they had sat back-to-back, improvised torches ready to ward him off. He had appeared so quickly they couldn’t react, taking Lilah and draining her. Rachel had run mindlessly into the forest.

In the darkness, Rachel didn't see the root blocking her path and tripped. Hitting the ground with a thud, she cursed, winded, and struggled to her feet again. She knew she had to keep moving, but the initial terror of watching her companions die brutally had been replaced by fierce, irrational anger. She fought the temptation to turn around and spend her last moment of life telling the monster stalking her he was a walking cliché.

Exhaustion was overwhelming her, the adrenaline that had sustained her so far losing it's potency against her fatigue. Her desperate sprint through the forest had been reduced to little more than a stubborn, stumbling jog. She had long since realised she was completely lost. She heard something move behind her and froze.

Her creator had given her the limp body of a companion she had thought gone for help. His neck had been snapped, but he was still alive. He had whimpered as she slid her canines into his shoulder, and convulsed briefly. She realised that he was experiencing the same moment of pleasure she had experienced during her death. She felt his pulse flutter wildly as his body fought to live, then slow until finally she felt him die.

“Well done, young one,” her creator murmured. She lowered his body reverently to the ground, surprised at the fierce rush of love that surged through her at the sight of his cooling form.

“I love him,” she whispered.

“Of course. His death has given you life. You should be grateful for that gift. You will always treasure the memories of those you choose. You are clinging to your human perceptions of vampirism, child. We are not vicious animals.”

She cocked her head to one side, listening carefully. In the distance, she detected the muffled thud and bitten off cursing of her former friend as she hit the ground.

“May I go to her?” She asked.

Her creator smiled indulgently.

“Of course.” He said softly, and faded into the shadows.

She swept through the trees, the moon providing more than enough light to navigate the obstacles Rachel had tangled with, and was behind her prey in seconds. She watched Rachel tense as she felt her presence, and then sigh.

“Fine,” Rachel muttered. Her shoulders slumped and she turned, resigned, to meet the creature that would kill her. Their eyes met.

“Lilah?” Rachel gasped, stumbling a little.

“Not really,” the vampire smiled.

“But…. but you died! I saw him kill you!”

She smiled again, showing her sharpened incisors. Rachel stared, shocked.

“I am reborn, Rachel. You cannot imagine the power of the night.” Her voice became lyrical and hypnotically soft.

“I can hear your blood, Rachel. It sings to me. I can taste it already.”

Rachel shook off her stupor and squared her shoulders.

“Fine, Lilah. Kill me. Just hurry up about it. I’m tired of being terrified.”

The vampire that had been her best friend smiled again, impressed by the human’s bravery. Even as a human, Lilah had known Rachel was something special: beautiful, smart, and athletic. As a vampire she could only see potential. Rachel was a potential kill, true, but she was also a potential companion. Instinctively, she knew her creator approved of this, even as he appeared at her side.

“You choose well, young one,” she said, too low for Rachel to hear.

The vampire circled the human who refused to run again, despite her obvious terror. It would be better if he turned her rather than his childe. A lone vampire could become discontent, even angry, and turn on their sire for condemning them to an eternity alone, which is why most vampires turned two humans at a time. In truth, he had already chosen a companion for his newest childe, but he could not fault her choice. He had not considered turning them both because traditionally vampires who had associated as humans would compete for their sire’s attention to the point of self-destruction. He had sensed the bond between these two humans and believed it would survive death and rebirth but was reluctant to lose two excellent potential vampires for the sake of a theory. His childe, however, appeared to be proving him right. The decision between the two of them had been difficult, and given the opportunity to take both, he would. As for his other potential, she would be spared. Or perhaps he would be the first vampire in more than two centuries to successfully train and rear three offspring. He would take these to two Italy, he decided, and see what they thought of Maria. Stepping behind his childe’s chosen, he cradled her against his chest and softly lowered his teeth to her throat.
"And beyond the Wild Wood?" asked the Mole.
"The Wide World," said the Rat. "And that doesn't matter."
