Aly interview from Smash Hits, january 2001

I got this from AHC...

Truth or Dare
You've probably heard a zillion rumours about Buffy's Alyson Hannigan, so we asked her to set the record straight...

Rumour 1
You met George Lucas recently and won a role in the next Star Wars film and that's why you've come to Oz to film it.

No, aren't they finished with the movie now? I've come to Oz to promote the Buffy DVD and to sign a bunch of stuff. I got to meet some fans, that was fun. Then I went to like some mall, called the QVB! It was cool!

Rumour 2
Adam Sandler is going to be a guest star on Buffy.

Yeah, Adam Sandler's going to be on the show. I'm a huge fan -- huge fan! He's going to bring Willow back from gay-dom. He comes on the show and Willow goes back to boys, all because of him!

Rumour 3
There'll never be another series of Buffy cos you want to make movies.

Oh, that's false, we're all contracted for the next two years. We'll do movies if they come up. There's a big difference with movies you have a lot more time, and television is very quick. With a movie you have three and a half months to shoot an hour and a half, television you have eight days to shoot an hour. Plus, you definitely make better friends with cast members working on a TV series. I hope to remain friends with the cast members from Buffy for the rest of my life.

Rumour 4
When you said "say my name bitch" in American Pie, you just made that up on the spot.

Yeah, that was an ad lib. That's another thing with movies, you have the time to throw something in. The directors were like "OK, throw something in," so we were like "Well what should we say?" He suggested, "What's my name" and I asked im if I could say it and they were like "Yeah, we'll probably never be able to use it but, OK, try." So we just did one take and it was hilarious! We were all laughing afterwards and were like "Oh, they'll never let us use that!" After the movie was edited they had left it in. I thought it was funny. There aren't any other lines I ad-libbed. I'm not that confident to write a script or anything.

Rumour 5
You have a cat named Dr. Zeuss.
[Nick's note: Dr. Zeuss should be Dr. Seuss, the children's book author]

(Looking sad) I did. Next question.

Rumour 6
You have a phobia of spiders and you were nervous coming to Australia in case you were bitten.

No, I'm not too fond of spiders that don't have handlers. Acting spiders -- great, they're fine. Do you guys have a lot of spiders here? Oh great, well we're leaving then. No, I'm just scared of scorpions and stuff. Like if I find a spider in my house or something, I don't kill it! I'll try to usher it out. Gran-daddy-long-legs are very sweet, I don't know if you guys have those. So I just try to get a piece of paper and throw it outside. But if it looks really scary, I'll just be like "sorry" and squish it. Anything that can kill you is not really something I want to see, unless it's in a cage.

Rumour 7
Buffy fans meet up in America to discuss your hairstyles. They say they like it long but they don't like it when it's tied up in a knot.

What? Wait, say that again? Willow's or Buffy's? No, that's gotta be false, I mean, it's short now. And I don't do much to my hair really. I don't think anybody cares. If they were having a meeting about the hair, that could be a little odd. It would be a boring meeting. I haven't really had any weird fans, everybody's really sweet and really nice. I've heard of some weird things fans do, but I don't really want to say that because it would give people bad ideas.

Rumour 8
There's a website called Hannigan.com which is actually written by you.

No, is there? My publicist is writing the address down! It's not written by me. I don't have my own website. I've looked at quite a few of my fansites, they're really sweet, it's amazing how much time and effort that these people put in. I'm surprised at some of the photos that people are able to get. I wish they couldn't find those. It's scary sometimes when I see photos of myself I never knew existed.

Rumour 9
You're giving up acting next year to try your luck as a racing car driver.

(Laughing) No, that would be completely false. A race car driver? Cos I did a celebrity race? I didn't come in last, but I came very close. I could see last! I think I beat George Lucas and Ashley Judd, and some other people. You can see who's driving past you, they have the names all over the cars. I think only the professional race car driver obviously overtook me. I know Ashley Judd did at one point, but then I got her back! On the straightaway off all places! It's like you must have really messed up that I passed you in the straightaway!

Rumour 10
You hate horror movies and you've never seen one.

All these rumours are wrong! I'm glad I can tell you the truth! No, I like horror movies. I mean you know, they're actually funny. They scare me, I'm a chicken, so I've got to go with someone I can grab onto! But I do go and see them when I have the time, and if I have a friend with me!

SEASON 6 SPOILERS ABOUND!
(Nothing HUGE, but if you don't want to know, then don't read...)

Spellraiser
She’s the personification of lesbian chic for the Blink 182 generation. Kenneth Hubbard talks to ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Alyson Hannigan.

More than most clichés, it can be said - and not very convincingly denied - that Alyson Hannigan is the cast member least like her character on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’. Can you imagine Willow as an ex-soccer player? Can you conceive of Willow having tattoos on her back and ankle? What about her stepping out with a member of Marilyn Manson’s band? She may share the petite dimensions and ghostly pallor of the Wiccan science geek but there the similarities end. But with the rumours of Willow shedding her hippy-dippy image this season, maybe we’ll see a glimpse of a harder-edged Hannigan...

How much longer do you think ‘Buffy’ can go on? Do you see yourself staying with it for a long time?
“I always wanted the Golden Girls to slay some vampires, so I think that’s okay. When we’re 80, we could still do this. I don’t want to give up my day job. “

How do you see Willow’s evolution throughout the course of the show? It seems as if she has grown as a person more than any other character, even Buffy herself.
“If you think of where she started, she was sort of this shy introvert in high school that had a great brain. I think it’s those types of people in real life that actually evolve more. You can go back to the high school reunion or whatever, and those are the people that are really interesting and are doing something completely different than just studying their books in high school.”

Where would you like to see Willow go in the sixth season?
“I hope Willow gets taller, and she gets a tan.”

There’s going to be a musical episode this year - are you looking forward to that?
“Absolutely not. (Laughs slightly.) That is just not something I’m looking forward to at all. There should be laws against my voice. Seriously, I’m hoping for a really strong case of laryngitis that week.”

When does Joss Whedon tell you what’s going to happen with Willow?
“He tells us right before ‘TV Guide’ comes out so we don’t have to read it for ourselves.”

There are rumours that Willow is going to be the villain for much of this season.
“Oh, I don’t know. Well, actually, I’ve only seen the first episode and that was yesterday that I read that.”

If it was true, what kind of Bad Girl would Willow make?
“Oh, dear, I don’t know! Maybe a little bit of her evil Willow coming back, you know, from the other dimension. But I don’t know.”

Joss said he would be in favour of you wearing that costume from the Evil Willow episode if this comes to pass.
“Nice! That’s good to know. See, you guys know more than I do!”

What has been the most surprising aspect of this character for you?
“I guess the power, the magic power, because she was so computer-oriented. I never really expected her to branch off into becoming a witch, and to have such a gift of that natural power that she’s harnessing.”

How fascinating is the Wiccan aspect to you?
“It’s very fascinating, but it’s also very intimidating, because I don ‘t personally know anything, really, about it. So I’m like always trying to make sense of the spells and always questioning whether these things are real...”

Do you get feedback from real witches as to whether you are doing it right or not?
“Not really. I mean, they’re supportive, but they never go ‘Okay, that would never happen’. Thank God!”

How close are you in real life to your character?
“Well, my friend was asked that, whether I was anything like this character, and he gave the perfect answer, which was that she’s one of my personalities. So I always like that. There’s certain things that are quite similar, and then there are things that are totally different.”

What are the similarities?
“The similarities would be just the quirky sense of humour and the goofiness.”

When the struggle over the show was going on in relation to the WB and UPN, did you feel caught in the middle at all?
“No, not at all, because it doesn’t really involve me, you know? I knew that the show was going to come back, I wasn’t really worried about our jobs being taken away. And, actually, I’m really excited. I really think it’s sort of putting another little fire under the show. I know Joss really wants to do well and sort of, like, you know, be, like ‘Hey, look what stories you missed out on.’ I mean, not be, you know, like so ‘na-na-na-na’ about it, but...”

You think it might be better than if you had stayed on the WB?
“I think so. Not that the WB didn’t care, but I personally felt like I was on a backburner there. I never felt important. It was like, yeah, I knew they liked the show and loved having it and everything, but I don’t know. I think they were worried about all of the other stuff.”

At your first ‘Buffy’ press interview five years ago , you were so shy and nervous. You barely said a word.
“I know, I know!”

How have you changed in the years since?
“Um, I don’t know. I guess I’m a little more - I wouldn’t say used to, but I’m okay with answering. I don’t feel like I’m going to stick my foot in my moth, although I do It’s just that I’m a little more secure with the foot in the mouth. I’ve gotten used to the taste. But I just feel a little more comfortable and at ease.”

There were some complaints that the show wasn’t going far enough in depicting the Willow/Tara relationship, that they often seemed more like roommates than lovers. But in the last few episodes you both seemed a lot closer because Willow was looking after Tara.
“I think it was really a nice element. Obviously, it was a horrific thing - her brain was sucked and everything. But I like the fact that Willow would nurture, and she really was going to take care of Tara for as long as it took. And if she never got her brain back, then she would just take care of her, and I think that was really nice, and it sort of shows the love that they have for each other, through thick and thin. And it was nice.”

Have you heard from the gay community about what kind of role model Willow is to them?
“I’ve had a really positive response from the people that I’ve spoken with, and it’s just so rewarding. And mainly, like, the people that I just run into on the street and stuff. It really makes a difference in their lives. I mean, who can ask for anything more than that? And the show takes the relationship and really just makes it about two people in love and not ‘Oh, look, we’re doing something different.’ And it’s just so nice, and it’s so wonderful to meet people that actually have been affected by it personally.”

You and your boyfriend, Alexis Denisof, went to Papua New Guinea recently to do a documentary on the Huli Wigman tribe.
“It was fabulous. It was such an amazing experience. It was just absolutely incredible. I felt like I was in a whole different world. They were just the most beautiful people, and it was such a rewarding experience. And also, because I went with [cable channel] E!, and they had scouted everything and talked to the tribes, it was so, just effortless. It was amazing. But I hope the show turns out well, because all I was doing was going ‘Wow!’ I mean, that’s really all I said the entire time, it was so overwhelming. It was all this input, and I was just speechless.”

Did you have editorial control so that if you did make a fool out of yourself, you could cut it out?
“No, I don’t. Actually, my boyfriend and I went, and we said ‘You know, if you don’t have enough, we can go in and do voiceovers and talk about it.’ We were just taking it all in, so it’s hard to comment while it’s happening. But it was so incredible. It was one of those things that, in the 15th hour, in the middle of the night on the set of ‘Buffy’, in November, when things are really stressful, I’m going to be like, ‘Okay, I’m going to go back to that place, and I’m just going to level my head out again.’ And I’ll go, ‘You know what? It’s just a television show.”

How’s the auto racing going?
[Laughs] “Well, I haven’t gotten any tickets, but yeah, I speed a lot.”

But I meant the celebrity racing circuit...
“Well, I did it last year, the year before this summer.”

Are you ‘retired’, then...
“No, but I came in pretty far back, so maybe they’ll ask me to do it again. It was fun. I think that if I did it again, I would take more risks. I tink I was a little too safe. I was thinking ‘No, no, there’s a car, there’s walls, I don’t want to crash.’ But, actually, Melissa Joan Hart told me, ‘No, no, you can just slam these things into walls, it’s fun!’ I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ She’s, like, ‘Just pretend they’re bumper cars’, and I said ‘I don’t think so.’ ‘No, no, they’re strong.’ So I think maybe I would apply her advice a little more. I had the fear factor; I was a little scared and intimidated. So I was, like, fourth from last.”

Has the network switch affected your personal life? After all, your boyfriend and his show are now on a different network than yours.
“I know. We thought ‘Oh, no, it’s not going to affect us.’ But last night, when he was going to the WB party, I was like, ‘Bye, honey!’ That’s a little odd.”

You could have gone anyway.
“I know, I now, but it was my friend’s birthday, and she’s more important. I mean, to be the token little date or something like that, it’s not fun.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finish this sentence: "And one time, at band camp, I stuck my flute up my..."

Most movie fans have no trouble recalling the last word of the infamous line uttered by actress Alyson Hannigan, a.k.a. Band Camp Girl, near the end of American Pie. A demure demoiselle full of boring band-camp stories for most of the underdog hit movie, Alyson transformed into a dirty-talking sexpot by the film's denouement. Band camp memberships soared across the country. Throngs of women lined up outside flute stores.

OK, maybe that didn't happen, but Alyson unchained the inner dominatrix in her squeaky clean girl-next-door image. She went on to explore her sapphic side on the vamps vs. vampires series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, when her character Willow got a lesbian makeover -- fueling the threesome fantasies of goth boys everywhere. And when American Pie 2 hits movie theaters across America on August 10, Alyson reprises her role as a band-camp instructor with the soul of a porn star.

"There's the sweet little ol' 'she's playing with the band' side," says Alyson, 27, of Band Camp Girl. "And then there's the no-holds-barred sex side. She's definitely not shy when it comes to bedroom issues."

And neither is Alyson, as we learned when we posed a dozen unashamedly prying sex questions. From the difficulty of performing oral on a "large" man to the aphrodisiac qualities of a tan to the joy of plotless porn, this racy redhead's uninhibited answers could heat a vampire's blood.

1. In American Pie, Stifler's mom seduces a guy on the pool table. Where's the wildest place you've ever had sex?

Alyson Hannigan: Well, I've done the pool table thing. But I'd say probably the wildest would be...oh, man...I guess, while driving. That was good. And it was a stick shift so it was kind of difficult. We had to maneuver. We were actually driving. We had to figure it out: One steers, one does the stick shift and the gas pedal. And one ex-boyfriend and I -- you know those sky buckets at the amusement park? Well, it wasn't hot and heavy sex, but it was like, OK, well, just so we could say we did it. It wasn't like real sex, it was more like, "OK, c'mon. Quick." I've heard that some airlines are going to start putting cabins in some planes for long flights to London and Australia. I was like, Look at that, the mile high club is gonna get a lot of new memberships.

2. Will you push a guy around in bed?

AH: [Laughs] Well, I don't get any complaints. Guys don't mind being pushed. I definitely take control. I know what I like. Not that I'm this dominatrix or anything. But yeah, I'd say I'm the more...pushy...if you want to use that terminology.

3. Does size matter?

AH: It's not the most important thing. But if the guy's not so great, but he's well-endowed, then you put up with a little more than you would the normal, regular guy. It's like, "Oh...but...." But the long haul, no, that's definitely not what matters. To just be completely bold, it's really not very good for oral sex. Guys with big...it's just not so good. I mean, yeah. I'm sure prostitutes are fine, [because] they've got better neck muscles.

4. Finally, an upside for guys with a small penis. So, do you prefer giving or receiving oral sex?

AH: Giving, actually. Not that I'm against...you know. I just love...there's nothing better than seeing my boyfriend at such a nice pleasured moment. Aaaaah. I'm so bright red right now. I just hope my mom doesn't read this. I love pleasuring him, I love to make him feel good. And that just turns me on.

5. Have you ever had a one-night stand?

AH: No, I haven't. I don't think I'm a one-night-stand type of person. I just gross myself out in my head, like, "OK, where's this been?" I'm just more comfortable with people that I love, or at least am pretty fond of. There is the whole, "Ooh it's a stranger," kinda thing. But all my friends who have done it are like, "Oh, it's not as satisfying," and afterwards, it's kind of awkward. And you're like, "OK, I don't even know this person." I've never had a friend who's a big fan who's like, "Hey, let's go have one-night stands! Woo!"

6. What's your favorite part of your body?

Click the audio link at left to hear Alyson's answer.

7. Are you into sex toys or getting adventurous in bed?

AH: Sure. I mean, as long as it's not like an animal, or something. [Laughs] There's not much that would offend me. If my boyfriend said, "Hey, honey, let's try this," I'd definitely try it. Although the ménage-à-trois thing I wouldn't be able to do with my boyfriend. Because I just love him so much that I think it would be too screwy. The whole jealousy thing just wouldn't work. I just couldn't see him doin' some other chick. That wouldn't work out. I can understand if it's somebody you're seeing and you're just, "Uh, whatever, it's fun for now." I totally understand it then. But not if it's somebody you truly, deeply love. I just couldn't do that.

I once looked into seeing how to make a chain-link-fence headboard for my bed. I thought, That'd be really cool to have. But it seemed like a real bitch to actually get made. I was talking to the construction guys at work and they're like, "Well, you know, it's gonna bounce around a lot, and it's gonna be pretty noisy and squeaky. And it's not gonna be great." I was like, "All right. Never mind." But wouldn't that be fun to have a chain-link bed? You know where I came up with it? I was driving past a house that had a black chain-link fence. I was like, "That would make such a great bed." There's so many different places to tie people up. You can grab onto it, you could climb it...but it didn't happen. And now my tastes have changed, and aesthetically, it wouldn't be so pleasing.

8. Was your first time everything you thought it would be?

AH: Yeah, I don't regret my first time. I mean, it wasn't fireworks or anything, but I was glad it was with the guy it was with. I didn't know what the hell I was doing, but it was all right. With age, it obviously becomes much better. It hurt. [Laughs] But it was like a good pain. It's a lot easier for guys. You just stick it in.

9. On a recent Sex and the City, a guy spoils the mood in bed with baby talk. Are you turned on by talking dirty in bed?

AH: Yeah! I'm very open to anything. As long as it's not cheesy. But in the right mood, it's really not cheesy when it's happening. Just talking about it now, going, "I like it when he talks dirty to me," it sounds a lot cheesier than when it's happening. Yeah, it's nice. But the baby talk in bed would not be so nice. At that point, you'd just have to gag him. It's like, "Hey look, this is our new game." And stuff a sock in his mouth. I don't want him to rhyme. Like, cat in the hat's fine, but not during sex.

10. There's a porn knockoff of Buffy called Buffy the Vampire Layer. What's your view of porn?

AH: I like stuff like Seymour Butts. I love that. Obviously, there's the whole porn-cheesy element. But I like the fact that it seems like it's real. There's this one where they went to Europe, and the girl's on a train, and she's, like, masturbating. I just thought that was awesome. Because you see the people walking by, so obviously he just took his video camera and videotaped her. Don't give me a story, just give me the porn. I don't need a plot. And now that porn's on DVD, it's so much better. Just the clarity. You just pop in the little disc, and you can fast-forward to the good parts without having to wait for the VCR to wind. Although it is kind of fun to watch porn on fast-forward. Then it's like, "OK, I didn't like this couple, let's get the next couple."

11. Have you had an embarrassing sexual moment on the scale of the guy getting caught violating a pie in American Pie?

AH: Not to that degree! That would probably send me to the nunnery -- getting caught by your father fucking a pie. That's pretty humiliating. I got caught, but it was by a [boyfriend's] friend, so it was no big deal. His friend had just broken up with his girlfriend, so he was all depressed. And not really wanting to see other people having sex. But that wasn't super embarrassing. But nothing really embarrassing. Oh-oh! Wait, no, that wasn't me. I don't know why I thought that was me. I've hit heads with people, and it hurt. But I actually knew somebody who broke a guy's nose during sex. She was just a little too happy. I think it was her pelvic bone.

12. We're glad you've avoided serious injury during sex. Finally, do you consider yourself good in bed?

AH: Wow. Well, I don't get complaints. But it's pretty tacky to be like, "Yeah, I'm such a great lover." Yeah. [Laughs] I definitely have a good time, and he does, too. My boyfriend and I are fabulous together. We've got it down. We've just got that extra spark in our skin, it just matches up perfectly. Our skin touching is amazing.
