I'm one of those lucky people who wasn't put off by the title, and I've been watching since the beginning...well sort of....
I don't remember the movie in theaters, but I caught it on TV. The title intrigued me, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". It just screamed ironic humor which I love. I loved the idea of the movie more than the movie itself (not bad, but the attitude of the movie was a little off). So when I heard they were going to air a series called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", I knew I wanted to see it.
But there was a problem. The premier was up against two other shows I was already watching, so I was only able to catch the second half. But that was enough to show me this was better than the movie. But I still couldn't watch the next few episodes. I don't remember if other shows moved or went into reruns or what, but I think the next one I saw was
Angel. I made sure not to miss any after that, other shows be darned, I'm
not missing Buffy! Not long after that they reran the premier (a special showing, I think), and I decided I had to tape it, and all the episodes I could, from then on. The first season is a little out of order, but I finally got them all (I think the last were special rebroadcasts of season 1 episodes on another night after season 2 started). Of course, it wasn't until later that I discovered the official web site and learned the actual names of the episodes to which I had given my own nicknames. Eventually I redid the labels and noted the proper order to view them in. And I've been saving them
in order ever since.
Ok, fast-forward to season four. Aw, Oz left and Willow's all upset. Oooh, next week's an episode with no dialog for much of the hour; that could be cool. Wicca group not so much a witch group, ooh, but that one girl seemed to perk up briefly when Willow mentioned spells, I wonder if they'll get together; they told us her name is Tara and made sure we'd catch it, so she's probably important. Creepy-evil-guys do something to everyone, awful quiet the next morning, must be the no-talking thing. Wow, I can read lips! Yadda, yadda, really cool episode, many funny moments, Willow and Tara trying to hide from the Gentlemen. Tara's tenatively taking Willow's hand to comfort her, I think she
likes her... Wow, that was cool! They just slid a vending machine across the room to block the door! Oh, I guess that's what the hand-holding was about, witch stuff. Coversation at the end... "nothing special" "No, you are!" Ok, she
so has a crush on Willow. But will Willow return the feelings or does she only see her as a new friend? I hope we'll see more of Tara, I like her already.
More clues, metaphoric spell casting (I didn't fully get it until later), still not sure where the show really means to go with this. Does Willow realize how Tara feels, and how does
she feel about it?
Who Are You, Fuffy (Faith in the body of bUFFY) meets Tara and comments on the "obvious", the show's first explicit acknowledgement that their relationship is more than just friends, or at least Faith thought so.
Where the Wild Things Are, Willow puts her hand on Tara's knee, Tara freaks out (under the influence of the poltergeist). Ok, I'm starting to believe the show is serious and I'm not just imagining the things between them. All that's left is for them to actually come out about the relationship to the others.
New Moon Rising, "You have to be with the one you l-love." "I am." "You mean...?" "I mean." I don't think I've ever seen a more beautiful, touching, loving, and romantic scene. Thank you, Joss.
I'm still not in the online fan community at that point, just checking the web site for titles and schedule information, and no one I know watches the show, so I'm just happily watching the show and the further development (in what they show) of Willow and Tara's relationship.
Family, oh
that's why she sabotaged that spell, floating dance (awww!). Throws me a couple curves...
Triangle, "Hello, gay now!"
IWMTLY, Willow "noticing" April, Tara looking jealous (was she pretending or really annoyed?). Great acting and wonderful moment in
The Body.
Tough Love, first fight... Glory hurts Tara. Joss, what have you done!? Don't lose Tara! Willow takes on Glory, very cool fight, but not really thought-through fully on her part. I coulda told her knives would be useless; she shoulda brought a bag of bricks instead, they'd be more effective. Darkest Magick, huh? This is gonna have consequences down the road; there's a reason the book was locked.
Tara is crazy, but still adorable. Ok, she can't stay like that on the show forever. Willow won't leave her, so she won't be able to move on. Either they plan to have Tara die, or they're going to have to restore her somehow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Previews for
The Gift. Buffy swinging something and clobbering Glory (I've been saying since
Blood Ties or so that Olaf's hammer would be a good weapon to try, she's hurt (a little) by hard hits--even by Xander with a crowbar--but sharp weapons just bounce off and don't cut her), some sort of magick going on... please let that be restoring Tara! I don't think I've ever anticipated an episode of anything so much. They restore Tara! Another beautiful moment as Willow and Tara "reunite". More cool stuff as they grab hands to clear a path. Touching scene at the end with Willow in tears and a sad Tara trying to comfort her.
I finally went and checked out the Bronze, got referred to another board, and a while later met someone who referred me to the Kitten board. I finally checked it out in August 2001 and registered not long after (had to wrack my brain for a decent posting name that fit me). Now I'm hooked on the Kitten, and that only improves my appreciation for W/T even further.
