Has anyone got the Magazine 'M' interview with Aly?

I was just wondering if anyone has the magazine interview from 'M' that has an interview with Aly. She's on the cover with the quote "I love being a lesbian" underneath.



I heard about this interview but i was too late getting to the shops to buy it and they were all sold out.

I've read it. There's a lot that I have and haven't seen before. It has questions about her wedding, how she felt playing a lesbian character and the rumour that she had died.



It did have a couple of interesting questions about her relationship with SMG. I don't have a copy to hand so I can't type it out for you.

Buffy star and American Pie's band camp babe Alyson Hannigan reveals she's never done anything naughty with a flute - nor any other musical instrument. Well, that's cleared that up then...



How did you get into acting?

Alyson Hannigan: I just always knew I wanted to act. It's like I came into this world knowing exactly what I wanted to do with my life. My parents were photographers, so whenever they needed a baby for a modelling job I'd sit there in front of the camera, and I loved it. That led to commercials for things like McDonald's and Oreo Cookies. I did a couple of movies and TV stuff and then along came Buffy the Vampire Slayer.



Were you a typical showbiz brat?

AH: Not at all, honestly. In the beginning it was just a hobby. I'd go to soccer practice one day, then I'd be off doing a commercial the next day, so I stayed balanced. I went to a regular school, not one of those Fame schools. If I'd become a brat, the other kids would have soon put me in my place.



Your parents split when you were two years old. Who raised you?

AH: My mum. I was born in Washington and we moved to Atlanta, but I still saw a lot of my dad. He moved to California when I was eight or nine so it got harder to see him - I could only visit during school holidays. I guess if your parents split up when you're really young it doesn't seem odd. You're used to them not being together, so it feels kind of normal.



Are you anything like your geeky, sexually liberated character Michelle in the American Pie films?

AH: I can be quirky, but I don't say such rude things in public.



So you've never done naughty things with a flute?

AH: Of course not! Before you ask, I haven't done anything nasty with any other musical instrument either.



And what about pies?

AH: You know what, apple pies just don't seem the same since I saw what Jason Biggs did to one in the first American Pie movie. Now I always check to make sure he's not around before I sit down to eat one.



Did you have any reservations about the lesbian storyline on Buffy?

AH: Not at all. I thought it was handled so well. It was simply two people falling in love and it wasn't as if I had to do lots of hot lesbian sex scenes. I was amazed when some critics found it offensive. That says more about them than it does about people with those sexual preferences.



Your character Willow was a witch. Do you believe in all that supernatural stuff?

AH: Willow studied and practised witchcraft, which I've never done. But I'm pretty open-minded and I think there's a lot of stuff out there we don't know about. Have I ever wished I could do magic spells? Oh sure, but not for evil. Back in high school I would have liked to have been able to perform spells so the boys would fall madly in love with me.



What's the weirdest rumour you've ever heard about yourself?

AH: A couple of years ago there was a story on the internet that I was dead. I've no idea where the story came from, but suddenly it was all over the radio. I think the radio news station had tried to verify it through my agent and, since she couldn't get hold of me, they chose to run with it. But I wasn't dead. I was just out shopping.



What's the filthiest thing a fan has ever said to you?

AH: My mail gets screened first so I never get to see the really weird stuff. But people sometimes quote my lines from American Pie when I'm out. You know, that 'This one time at band camp...' stuff about those naughty things with a flute. Once I was with my mum in a restaurant and a guy came up to the table and yelled the line at me. That was pretty embarrassing.



You've had on-screen flings with Jason Biggs, Seth Green and Nicholas Brendon. Was there any off-screen action?

AH: Oh my God, no way. I've known Seth since he was about 13, so it would have been too weird to suddenly get romantically involved. And when you work with someone many times, like Jason, you develop a sort of brother-sister relationship. Nicholas is really buff, but I'm not into that. Every time he knows he has to take his shirt off on screen, he hits the weights like crazy. He's getting bigger and bigger, which doesn't do it for me. My fiancé, Alexis Denisof, is toned and fit but he's not bulky.



How did you meet Alexis?

AH: He stars in the Buffy spin-off Angel. I guest-starred on the programme, we met, and I immediately had a crush on him - he was so cute and funny and we had an instant chemistry. Oh, he's just so hot. We'd been dating for three and a half years before we got engaged.



He's eight years older than you. Presumably the age gap doesn't worry you?

AH: No, not when there's such an amazing spark. Anyway, I've always been attracted to older guys. They have more to offer, I think. I do like to tease him, though. Like there'll be a movie on TV and I'll say, 'When this came out I was only 15. Weren't you in college?'



Have you set a wedding date?

AH: Not exactly, but hopefully it'll be later this year if we can get our acts together and plan it. I do have a dream wedding in mind. It's really unconventional, but don't even think about asking me for details - I'm keeping them to myself.



Spoilsport. So what was it like on the last day of filming Buffy?

AH: It was so sad. I cried about 800 times. The weird thing was we didn't all finish filming at the same time, so it was one long day of goodbyes.



Is it scary now you'll no longer have that regular income?

AH: You bet. I was on the show for seven years so you get used to a regular pay cheque. I have some money in the bank, but I'll have to start working again soon.



Is it true Sarah Michelle Gellar announced the show was being axed before the rest of you knew?

AH: Yes, that's true. She announced it in a magazine. I was pretty upset about that, but the show did feel like it was coming to an end.



Would you class her as a true friend or just a work colleague?

AH: Definitely just a work colleague. It was her decision from the word go to keep a professional distance from others on the show. I have friends from the programme whom I'll cherish for the rest of my life. I think it's so much more fun when you're friendly with people you work with, but I guess Sarah had a different view.



So there are no diva strops for Alyson Hannigan?

AH: Actors can get so big-headed. I hate people who look down on others and I hope I don't end up like that. I just want to be a good actress and play good roles.

I am wondering how a reporter can bring himself/herself to ask about the flute over and over and over again. So rude really. I feel for Aly there.

Again with the flute question, to ask it in an interview so she can clear it up for the umpteenth time is no less rude than some weirdo coming up to her yelling it at her in a restaurant. I mean ye gods, give it a rest already.

As for SMG, those questions are getting as tiresome as the flute one. So they aren't best friends, well boo hoo, that does not mean anything either way.

Anyway, I hope Aly will get another movie or tv project soon so maybe they'll can think of something new to ask her.

Reading this quote I have to wonder was Aly just giving an abridged version of how they got together or was the interviewer just not paying atttention and had to fill in stuff later? If its the latter then you have to wonder about the other stuff in the interview, especially as the answer about SMG leaving seems to be identical to one that's been posted here before.

Hmm yeah, I totally read over that because it is one of those questions that has been asked a million times as well. All the questions looked like old quotes that have been recycled. I know that some of the same interviews really have been used by several magazines in the past, the questions slightly rephrased and the answered altered just a tiny bit to make it look like original interviews, but they did not have big glaring errors like that.

Yeah there is alot of recycling. I contact a guy from the Chicago tribune on and interview and he told me that it was based on a conference call with multiple members of the rpess. That's why alot of these interviews sound alike.

If I recall, this board was set up as a haven for people who [among other things] were fed up of reading 'Amber is fat and ugly' posts by people who didn't like her character. Yet in this thread, people are sitting around insulting Nicholas Brendon's appearance just because they don't like the character he played. I certainly wasn't a fan of Xander's behaviour during the last two seasons of the show, but I don't think that's a reason to start calling Nicholas Brendon fat. I'm particularly disappointed that the moderators are joining in with this. I don't think I need to point out that it's deeply hypocritical to complain about other people slamming one of our favourite actresses for her appearance, then slam another actor for his appearance.

Not being buff does not mean you're fat, it just means you're not muscular, it's not an insult.

That question about Nicholas Brandon, Jason Biggs and Seth Green was one of the few here I had not seen before, so maybe they did talk to Aly herself for this interview. Surely they would not have thought up her reply.

At first I actually thought buff meant fat and that he hits the weights to do something about it, heh. When I realized it meant something else, I was like "suuuuure", but I did not mean it as an insult to Nicholas Brendon. Anyway, at first Aly's reply about his appearance sounded as something less than a compliment to me, though I'm sure no insult was intented. I guess it's how you read it, but I really do think there is a difference between (teasingly) wondering whether someone is buff or not and the systematic fat and ugly comments that were meant to deliberately insult and hurt Amber and her fans.

A few years ago there was an image of Oz in a comic and he looked like he was two meters tall, well we made fun of that, but not to insult Seth Green. Being short, skinny or fat isn't an insult in itself.

Believe it or not, some people who saw a picture of me thought I was buff too and asked my friend who had the picture whether I was a bouncer. Well hum, both my friend and I made fun of that. I am not buff, not if it means my bulky looks comes from muscles alone.

xita, Dr. G, others involved; I rad Aly's comments as referring to Nicky's persoanl preferred approach to such things. and I assume she knows him well enough to speak knowledgeably. As I understand it, he was specifically told to "shape out" during S-6 as part of how they wanted to portray Xander that year. Left to NB's own devices, my wife's words about Patrick Swayze express it best, "the bastard looks good in a suit" or Speedos for that matter.

It's ironic that ME spent time asking Nick to "shape up" when Joss decided to dump the actor at the end of the season as he did Charisma as well this season and Amber last season. Nick wanted to do Angel but was brushed aside by ME as not fitting in. I wonder if ME will ask him back since it's unlikely that they will get many of the BTVS actresses. I hope Nick turns them down flat and gives them some of their own back. Joss is not only small minded in his treatment of the people who work for him but also in his "vision". Joss always talks about ending character's stories but he never gave Xander or Tara much of a story and shunted Cordy aside. Their stories didn't end, they just stopped. Bad writing and a lack of imagination IMHO. That's a big reason why I no longer watch Joss Whedon's work.

OK, so let me preface this by saying that I love Willow's character (obviously), and I give all kinds o' props to AH for her portrayal. But I found some of her wording...disconcerting, shall we say. I'm thinking primarily of her reference to people with "those sexual preferences," but I was also less than thrilled w/ her saying that she "didn't have to do" explicit lesbian scenes.



And so my subject heading is intentional: did anyone else find any of that less than happy-making?

Ok given the fact that at least one answer in this interview is blatantly wrong and most questions are so similar to questions to other interviews it is hard to tell them apart, there is enough reason to wonder how accurately these answers depict Aly's actual words. It does not sound like her to talk around the subject by using words like "people with those sexual preferences". She has never been squeamish about using the G or L word before.



If these are her literal words then I still would not second guess Alyson. Please remember everything she has said before. She has always supported WT, always been appreciative of her gay audience, always given every indication of understanding how important the positive portrayal of WT was to so many people, and always seemed proud to have been a part of it. I cannot imagine that having changed or her comments meaning anything negative toward WT or LGBT matters as a whole. I read the hot lesbian sex scenes comment as meaning that she appreciated the fact that WT really had a deeply loving relationship and that their scenes were not just gratuitous rating stunting for the boys sex scenes. They weren't just two women fucking each other because it looked hot, to hell with whether it made sense to the story or characters or not. She never said anything about being bothered having done the intimate scenes she did perform with Amber. I trust Aly, I don't trust this interview, but I still can't read anything negative in them when it comes to WT.

You know, I find that a really odd thing to say about SMG, because from what I've seen and read, she is VERY close to some of her former AMC co-stars, especially the ones who play Edmond and Maria..I remember seeing photos of SMG at Eva's baby shower, and I know they went to her wedding...plus Amber has always said really nice things about her..

James has said that Sarah told him on his first day that she liked to keep all her acting relationships strictly professional. Of course she and James became good friends anyway, which was probably the driving force behind the chemistry between B/S. I'm sure that that is what Aly was refering to when she was speaking of the distance between herself and Sarah. It is called acting you know. It is possible to play someone's best friend without actually being one.



And I'm sure there was nothing negetive towards gays intended by Aly's phrasing. If they are quoting her word for word (doubtful) then it is all about the WAY she said it. Since we can't hear her charming voice it is sort of hard to interpret how she meant things, as she has a very specific way of talking. Remember, she wouldn't have pushed for the W/T love scenes if she wasn't supportive of the relationship.



Funny about the buff Xander comments. I seem to recall he-who-shall-not-be-named mentioning that Nicholas was really to buff to be a high school nerd in the Welcome to the Hellmouth comentary. He's no Arnold, IMO, but he looked fine in the tux to me. I was kind of more busy checking out the cleavage from the green, glowing dresses but.... anyway. So they wanted him to work out for season six? I could see how important it must have been for them to have a fit and muscular guy delivering the creesy hallmark speaches. A skinny boy wouldn't have had that same world-saving emphasis.

You know, I think one thing people don't often take into account when Alyson does these interviews is how much she has been bombarded with sex questions that range from the mildly off-color to the blatantly rude the last few years. She did American Pie right around the time Willlow first came out on BtVS, and that created an unnatural focus on the sexual aspects of the characters Aly played. Mix that with Aly's outspoken personality and some writers seem to believe that they have the right to do away with common decency and ask questions or make insinuations that they might never put to someone else. For a while I think Aly was game (take her Playboy interview a couple of years ago), but as the months and years have gone on and the questions have become more rude and more stupid, I think she's gotten a bit prickly about the whole thing. How many times is she going to be asked about kissing a girl (as the male interviewer displays a sick little grin...that happens on TV all the time)? Or if she's ever pleasured herself with a flute? Or, for god sakes, if she enjoys anal sex? (Because, yes, anyone who has starred in AP would naturally love to answer that question in an interview! Not! )



My point is that she's tired of being inappropriately sexualized, and it has nothing to do with her feelings about the gay community or her feelings about playing a lesbian character or her feelings about sex in general. It has more to do with the inhuman way some interviewers treat her and her desire to quickly move on to the next subject. Remember, most of the time she's not being asked about playing a lesbian because people want to hear some nice, let's-love-humanity-and-celebrate-diversity speech. She's being asked about playing a lesbian because they want to know about her kissing a girl. They're hoping she says something very sexual and hot so they can sell papers. Alyson knows this and, to me anyway, seems to be tired of playing along.



Anyway, Aly has always been very positive in her remarks about W/T when people have asked sincere, intelligent questions. I have no reason to second-guess her. Certainly not over dumb questions on press phone-conference.

P.S. I'm not saying that that asking her about playing a lesbian is a rude question, rather that interviewers have managed to make it into a rude question so many times that she just cuts them off at the pass now.

Very good point Amy. Just look at the big flashing line on the front cover. Most of the time the interviewers don't seem to give a flying fuck about WT really meant.
