Okay, I'm sure several of you remember this show. It was on the WB for two seasons before they cancelled it with a cliffhanger hanging. Grr.

I've been thinking about starting a thread for it for a while and this finally made me get around to it.

Quote:
Also making its DVD debut is "Popular", the one-hour dramedy that ran for two seasons (1999-2001) on the WB. The first season will street in July.

JFK High is the setting and the student body is separated into two classes: the popular and the unpopular. Leslie Bibb stars as Brooke McQueen, head cheerleader and most popular girl in school. Carly Pope is Sam McPherson, of the unpopular type. When their parents marry, the girls have to deal with each other in addition to a variety of high school issues.

I think Harrison was the only character that I really didn't like too much at the time. I remember his mom was gay and there were a bunch of episodes where he was a real jackass.

Sam, Brooke, Nicole and Mary Cherry were definitely my favorites. Ms. Glass was pretty cool too.

I watched a few eps I had on tape not too long ago and was pleasantly surprised at how good the acting was. Sure the story lines were out there a good deal of the time, but the acting tended to be spot on. And it was mostly a heck of a lot of fun.

Sigh, I'll be looking forward to these dvds.

Hmm, I don't think so, I can't find anything about that ever being on Dutch TV, nevermind, I'll just have to try and catch an episode somehow.

Edit: well speak of the devil, I just watched the last 5 minutes of an episode that turned out to be Grosse Point. Go figure, it was not the show I was thinking about though. Oh well, now all I need is to accidently come across a Popular episode.

It has been on Dutch tellie. I caught one episode once and it was like a bit of a parody on standard high school series and movies wasn't it? I mean sort of wacky and funny? Am I thinking of the right show or am I confusing it with something else altogether. If this is the show I am thinking of I might buy the DVD or watch out for reruns.

I think you might be talking about "Grosse Pointe" Garfield. It was another show on the WB. I think that one might have only been a half an hour though. I didn't watch as much of that one. And the girls fom "Popular" did show up on it once to play volleyball, I think. Heh.

The first season of Popular is like perfect! It was such fanfic fodder really, so much gay action going on in front of and behind the scenes. I love Mary Cherry :X and Ms. Glass was a hoot. Oh, how I loved hating Carmen. I will be getting these one way or another!

:lol What can I say G, I must be psychic.

You do need to catch an episode of Popular. I never thought of it as a parody, but I guess it could be considered one. Definitely wacky and funny though. Exaggerated a bit for sure. I think it was sometimes too smart for it's own good. I can't wait to watch again and see all the jokes I must have missed the first time around.

Ooh, I need to save up my pennies for this!

I can't believe they canceled the show. So idiotic. I only started watching close to the end and by the time I was hooked it had already been canceled. Grrrr!

I think Nicole and Mary Cherry were my faves. Ms. Glass also kicked ass.

I think it's fair enough to call this a parody, although it was subtle enough that some people might get annoyed with it. "Why is there a couch in the bathroom?!"

:grin

I loved that bathroom. heehee

I loved Popular and was really upset when it got cancelled. I still have no idea why it was cancelled. It was well written, well acted and managed to deal with important issues as well as off the wall issues really well. They also did an excellent Christmas episode.

I think this just started showing on FOX8, an Australian pay tv station. I remember catching the pilot. It was much better than I expected. It looks rather sharp and yet fun. I must keep an eye out for more.

I loved this show. :( I recently re-watched some eps I'd taped and realized it did have some potential (I didn't really care for the "comedy" though). *very sad it's over*

and you'll never be the same

Aw man, I loved this show! Mary Cherry was definitely one of my favorites, with her charming Southern accent and all. I think that the actress that played her, like Emma Caulfield, had some of the best comedic timing. Or maybe that just came from the siliness of the entire show... :hmm

It was just sooo good, the over-the-top comedy blended in with at times serious issues. I was aaalll for it.

When I heard it got cancelled, I just couldn't believe it. Does anyone know why it got cancelled? Hmmmpf. Oh well. I'll just be watching the DVDs then.

Ooh ooh, does anyone remember the "Austin Powers" cat which belonged to Ms Glass' sister? Any show that has a hairless pussy is a good show in my book. :wink

I got both the dvd sets. A little lacking in the extras, but, eh, what can you do.

I really enjoyed watching this show again. This time around I liked everyone but Carmen. Lily was annoying, but not as annoying as Carmen.

Sam, Brooke, Nicole and Mary Cherry are still my favorites though. I think this show is hilarious.
