Thanks for the Rachael article, much appreciated.

I wondered about the BAFTAs, Andrew Davies has won a few hasn't he? Ultimately though I don't think TTV will win any, pity.

You've got to admit the scene where Kitty comes back and asks Nan to come back to her, Nan tells her she broke her heart, they're both crying and Kitty puts her hand to Nan's cheek and says "won't you let me try and mend it then?", you've just got to admit that your hearts creaked a little bit for Kitty!?

BLESS.

Hey I've just realized something that most people probably realized along time ago, so what the hell ..... there IS a connection with TTV and BTVS!

Keeley Hawes and Anthony Stewart Head. Our dear Ripper was in an episode of Spooks earlier this year wasn't he!? Spooks, which Keeley is one of the main cast in!!

Well i just watched the final part this morning (i was out last night so had to tape it) and oh my god this is defently my favourite part and like of lot of other kittens here at the end of last weeks ep i was willing Nan and Kitty to get back together but by the end of this ep it is defently Nan and Flo all the way! And thankfully no scary dildo this part!

How ironic the DVDs of this are being released in the UK on the same date as the Buffy S5 boxed set.

Grrr indeed... that's just plain stupid! Talk about character assassination! I'm liking the fact that she ended up with this version of Flo less and less... Err... Grr.. and Aurgh... Is there anything left of the Flo I loved from the book? Aside from the baby?

Speaking as someone who does not know the Florence from the book yet, I really loved this Florence, she was sweet and gentle and so very irresistable. The actress who portrayed her did a wonderful job. The love between Nan and Florence was palpable, especially in that final scene, really lovely. I think this series was too short though, and not just for smutty reasons. Judging from the comments by other kittens, they might have stayed truer to the book in a 6 parter, more time to explore the characters and have their relationships grow, like Pride and Prejudice. Ah well, it really was a wonderful series as it was. I am being spoiled here. It was a gem.

Oh, I love the last installment! It just was fantastic - and one of the only TV programs that I really, really got into. I was drumming the sofa and yelling: "NOT KITTY!!! NOT KITTY!!!!

/content sigh/ Yesss ! Finally ! Saw my first happy lesbian ending in a television series ! (-> haven't seen Bad Girls 3th season yet)

Damn... Such a shame Sarah Waters didn't win the Booker Prize. They should have given her the Pulitzer for Tipping the velvet alone.

Seeing the 3th ep was kinda special, coz my dad arrived late from work and dropped by to deliver some food (poor student, huh /chuckle/) Handed him a cool beer from the fridge and we started watching together. My dad's English is really bad (though he does speak Dutch and French fluently, and gets along in German, if he has to) but I think he understood most of it, me filling him in on some of the previous events. He wondered why Nan had blood on her face, and he was sorta scolding Flo, because she acted so "cold" in the beginning. LOL He left during Nan and Flo's love/sex scene, but that was just a coincidence, I think: he still had a long road ahead of him, had to drive home. I had to tell him the ending (I should just let him watch it, since I have it on tape). This afternoon he addressed the gay issue again, by talking about some ignorant people, how they don't get there are some good, talented artists, etc. among "holebi's"... Means a lot: he's the only one to bring up the subject spontanuously.

Series like Tipping the velvet really help.

Zena (I always had to grin at the mention of that name ;) running away with Nan's money, after having such a pleasant night, was really mean... Evil Xena stroke much I know the circumstances, situation was a big part of her motives: can't be easy surviving, then again: Nan did, found a way... Anyway, maybe Ze could hook up with Kitty (considering they both made mistakes in the past). Heh (joke)

I did feel sympathy for Kitty, sorry for her, but going: "Too little, too late, girl: you've had your chance." Definitely on Nan's side, what was best for her. The tension was killing me when Nan was waiting to throw the rose. Haven't read the book yet, but I just knew she was gonna do that in the series.

Happy she threw it at Flo. Jodhi May has this natural beauty going for her, this kind of child-like innocent aura around her. Apparently different from the book, where she isn't naieve at all... Ah well, you can't have it all: I'm sure I'll enjoy the book as well.

Ooh, I'm still not over it: Nan and Flo, walking hand in hand, with that cheesy heart circling them, while we hear a corny "It's only human nature after all." Didn't bug me one bit. That summs it up, really. :)

She looks really ethereal in the clips.. a definite peaceful beauty (if that ever makes sense any place but my warped mind)... I look at her and I feel like I should be drawing her portrait in oils.

I can't believe it's been TEN YEARS since The Last of the Mohicans... I'm now convinced she made a deal with the devil because she looks EXACTLY the same...like she hasn't aged at all. She could still play someone who is 19!

I loved that final line so much i have used it in my sig (as you can see :lol )

My local music store, who shall of course remain nameless

*cough* MVC *cough* which is totally crap said that they had no idea that it was being released on DVD, i soon put them straight (!!) and told them that it WAS and that they had better order it for me right now or else they would have one very pissed off customer on their hands, surprisingly they then discovered that it was on their computor and iam collecting my copy after all,

So i will soon have all the tipping the velvet goodness i want :D

Just finished watching my video of the 3rd ep, and I have to say that I thought this was the absolute biz. The only thing I would have changed was to have a few more episodes, the Nan/Kitty stage seemed to be a bit rushed and over to quickly. Maybe I'm just greedy

I've not read the book, although I have now got it. I think I'll leave it for a little while so it's fresh again. I have just finished Fingersmith, which should have won the Booker Prize,it is absolutely unputdownable.

Rachel Stirling on the Frank Skinner show was a hoot, she is going to be a star.

And finally, for Sarah Waters' fans she's doing a Q&A for the Guardian - link attached (fingers crossed it works!)

Because I'm absolutely bored silly at work...

Things I learned from the BBC miniseries Tipping the Velvet

1. If you decide to have "cheating/revenge" sex while your girl is away (or downstairs at a loud party), always lock the door.

2. Gold paint is sexy.

3. Never insult a woman in front of her friends when there are large heavy, objects about.

4. Finding your true soulmate is magical... it's even more magical when you can rub it in the face of the girl who broke your heart.

And most importantly...

5. Never, EVER use another women's dildo.. without permission anyway...

thank you... i'll be appearing here all weekend.. two shows on Saturday.. ahem..

I'll go crawl back into my hole now...

Thanks witchfoo for alerting us that the clips for part 3 were up on the BBC site! Watching the second clip when Nan was searching for Flo, and then the door opens, but then the clip stops was such a tease :cry . Reading all the kittens thoughts about the drama makes me so envious of everyone who got to see the show, and now tomorrow I so have to go to the bookstore and purchase this book.

Amen to that runnerbird! Rachel Stirling looked so beautiful and so sexy in that paint...mmmm

I wish there had been more shown of Flo and Nan, but I suppose a girl can't have everything ;)

Watching the miniseries has inspired me to reread the book and it's even better than I remember. I encourage anyone who hasn't read it to pick up a copy!

I can only comment on the book...

I read it in a day. :grin

It's spectacular. For some reason I had it in my head that Kitty and Nan got back together.

Then Florence showed up.

It sounds like the ending it true to the spirit, if not the letter. Although I agree that they should have left the women's bar and "tipping the velvet" to Flo. Ah well!

Excellent book.

I can't wait to read the rest. And to see this show!

I'll also be smirking a little bit at Tommy Girl ads now. ;)

so what is love then is it dictated or chosen does it sing like the hymns of 1000 years or is it just pop emotion

Re: Tipping The Velvet Thread

Postby tommo » Sat Oct 26, 2002 7:56 am

Well, that's an interesting take on the novel, Hyo Shin. Care to explain why you thought that?

Personally, I found the book hard, yes, that's true. But ultimately, I felt that it was affirming that true love is out there. That you do find the person you're meant to be with, despite the troubles that you might encounter along the way and despite having heartbreak. Honestly, I'm of the opinion that you can't appreciate the worth of love unless you've had your heart broken. And isn't that the essence of what happened in the novel? Nan was not only broken-hearted, but she was also a broken person. Florence, in my opinion, helped to put her back together again and I think that's one of the amazing healing qualities of love.

So no, I didn't find the book depressing. I found it uplifting and hopeful and optimistic in a way that I never knew I could. Yep, true love; that odd and bizarre thing, is found in the most unlikely of places, and at the most (sometimes) inconvenient and unexpected of times. And you know what? I think I like that theory. :)

Couple of things about books:

I was in Waterstone's in Ipswich today and noticed that they had signed (by Sarah Waters)copies of both Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet. It's likely other branches of Waterstone's will have them too.

And Sarah Waters talks about her favourite Victorian novels here. (btw, mods, please feel free to move this to the books thread if appropriate.)

Affinity is incredibly well-written, like Tipping the Velvet, but not as upbeat as that book, or Sarah Waters's latest, Fingersmith.

Re: Tipping The Velvet Thread

I think Affinity is an amazing book, but very different from TTV and Fingersmith. In many ways I think it's probably a much cleverer book which relys heavily on suggestion. Doesn't have the immediecy and intensity of the other two. A bit of a mellower read. It's a very beautiful commentary on madness and depression (!!). And I liked the ending!

I think if I had to choose though, TTV would be my favourite out of the three ...... but maybe that's cause I love Kitty so much!!

Just remembered reading an interview with Andrew Davies in which he said that he has optioned Affinity to be developed as a feature film for his production company. That said though books that are optioned don't always make it to the screen. Would be good though!
