Hi fontaine

I'd love a copy of TTV, how do we arrange that? (I'm in Australia too)

fontaine13 so, can I ask, did the tape-copies of TTV end up being one or two videos?

I just read the book. Very good. I couldn't put it down. Although parts of it were often heartbreaking, I found it to be beautifully written. And Nan's ending speach to Flo? I got misty eyed. Wonderful. Now if only they would show it or release the miniseries in the US!

I've had Tipping The Velvet around the house for a while but always passed it over for something else, until I read through this thread and got motivated to start reading. Only other books I've gotten that hooked on were JM Redmann's first two Micky Knight stories - Death by the Riverside and Deaths of Jocasta (recently republished by Bellabooks). I'm so seriously lacking sleep right now - worked all day, read most of the night and napped in between for the past two days. Someone pass the toothpicks ... zzzzz

Hey, I have her other two - I sense a sleepless weekend on the way.

I read *Affinity* during my holiday and i must say i was so saddened by the ending. Lately i've just been wanting happy endings (who can blame me) and those of you who have read it will understand what i mean. I did like the book a lot though and i would recomend it. The characters are interesting, the setting, the plot. I cant wait to read *Fingersmith*

Di, I'm interested in getting a copy! ;) my bunny in england sent me off his tape but we missed recording the first part. :(

ETA: oh, hanki, what a bunch of lovely photos on your site! :) just one thing though in the part two of tipping there are photos of flo and nan sitting in a cafe? when did that happen? and what happened? Flo looks so sad! :( gosh darnit i want to see this film already!!!! lol

the part two cafe bit: that was an extra scene (ie not in the book) that they put in right when nan and flo met, they talked for a little while and nan said she worked in a hat shop then couldn't make herself lie to flo any more (she was really renting then but couldn't/didn't want to say)

and glad you liked the site, there's more coming soon hopefully ;)

So I went for a family lunch at the weekend and at a certain point the conversation turned to Daniel Deronda which every single family member is watching. Out of interest I asked if anyone had watched Tipping the Velvet. Resounding silence except for my 86 year old Auntie Min who sang it's praises, said how much she loved it, especially the ending. She wasn't as taken with the second part and the dildo but loved the opening and final episodes because of the love between Nan and Kitty and Nan and Flo.

She couldn't understand how Kitty could have gone and married Walter Bliss. 'What was she thinking? I can't understand why she would do something like that! ' she kept declaring, observing finally that of course Kitty came to regret her actions, she wanted to get Nan back but by then it was too late. And then with wonderful loyalty she bemoaned the judgement of my ex gf (who after almost 8 years did a Kitty on me) advising me never to take her back and assuring me that I'll find a nice girl like Flo one of these days.

Oh I do so love my Auntie Min!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Postby Rane018 » Tue Dec 03, 2002 9:26 pm

crap. i just got my tape from my friend in london and i cant play it properly on my vcr! grrr! argh! :( darn that pal stuff

it was hilarious though. it played with a blue screen (yup, didn't get to see the dildo) but the voices were all fast foward and they sounded like alvin and the chipmunks. Although i think i will enjoy it more once i see it with actual pictures on the telly (thanks Di!) i did hear a lot of the changes people complained about in part three. it's so hard to condense the wonderful part three of the book into an hour but i did like that they kept in ralph's reaction when he stumbled ionto flo and nan. hearing them laughing chipmunk style was even funnier.

Ok, I have a question..I have read the book, so I know the answer to this as far as the book goes, but in the TV version, is Nan supposed to be Flo's first lover physically?

Kendah1897 in the show we're given much less background and information about Flo. While I don't think they say Nan is Flo's first lover a viewer could make that assumption, certainly it is implied that Nan is more experienced, knows more about the 'tom' scene. But then again you do get Flo checking Nan out, falling for her and willingly making love without questioning that she's in love with a woman so you could also assume that Flo already knows she likes women and maybe has had previous relationships. I think it's up to you, how you see her.

Evenin' all,

I'm guessing this is the right thread but if not, my apologies and mods please feel free to move it :

I've just got back from the taping of the French and Saunders Christmas special to be aired Christmas Day BBC 1, I think at 9:30 - it's after Only Fools and Horses anyway - and they have done a bloody hilarious parody of Tipping the Velvet which had the audience in stitches :grin

It is well worth a looksie and although may not be to everyone's taste in humour it had me in stitches.

I just now have to get over the looks and smirks directed at me from the four gay men I went with who zeroed in on me when it played :grin I don't know what they could have possibly been thinking? :whistle

Anyhoo, take care kitties,

Much love,

~Lou

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah French and Saunders doing Tipping the Velvet. Can life get any sweeter?

I've also read Affinity recently and I certainly agree about the ending. It's a well-told story, but I don't know that I want to read it again. Fingersmith though, I'll be buying that when the paperback comes out. Excellent story!! I'd love to see them make a movie of it... It would be fascinating to experience the story that way.

Rane, or anyone else who has read Sarah Water's Fingersmith, I was curious if you got the same enjoyment from reading this novel as from reading Tipping the Velvet? I was contemplating purchasing this novel, and just wondering if it was worth the purchase?

Re: ...

Postby Cicca » Sat Dec 14, 2002 11:52 am

Not the same enjoyment, but equal enjoyment. TTV really is a "Lesbo Victorian Romp". Fingersmith is quiet different. And while I really enjoyed TTV, Fingersmith is the one that's had me raving... It's excellent. The storytelling in this book is just amazing. PLEASE don't read any reviews because they tell you too much about the story. I had read some and I regret it!

It's definitely worth buying. I'm even considering buying the hardcover version just because it's so lovely.

Fingersmith

Postby Rane018 » Sat Dec 14, 2002 12:43 pm

hehe, i didn't read any reviews and when part one ended i was like :shock

i find there really is no way for me to compare the two novels, they are that different... i agree, TTV was a sexual lesbo victorian romp but this one was a bit more dark, with secrets and lies, yet still has a delish love story woven throughout it. a very interesting love story.

my favorite part of TTV was part three but with this book i find myself loving all the parts. I liked Affinity too but the ending left me :mad . i'd say this story was my faovrite of hers, left me all warm and fuzzy...

Thanks Cicca and Rane for your replies about the novel Fingersmith :) . The basic premise of the story has me intrigued, and I will take your advice Cicca to avoid reading the reviews (don't want to get too spoiled). I guess I will have to add this to my Christmas shopping list, thanks again :D !

VampNo12, you've got an excellent plan! I'm one of those funny people who even likes the physical structure of books and they've done a lovely job with Fingersmith. I may just give in and buy it! Given how much you've enjoyed Sidestep, I think you'll really like Fingersmith. heheheh I wonder what Katharyn would think about being compared to Sarah Waters. ;) There really are similarities though!

The other thing I really like about Fingersmith is that it got a lot of attention in being nominated for the Booker prize. I had to wait quite a while to get it from the library so lots of people were reading the various copies. Which could mean that there are lots and lots of literary lesbians in town (yay for that!) or also that there are lots of people out there who don't have a "momentary wiggens" about reading a story with lesbians. Yay for that!

ok, some spoilery bits for Fingersmith...

No peeking unless you've already read it!

Lucky Rane for not having read any reviews! One silly reviewer revealed Maud's secrets so I was scratching my head for the first part. It would've been much more effective if I hadn't known! Wow. As it was, I had the same reaction at the end of part one. I remember a small devil on my shoulder whispering something like that to me as I got up to the end. "Hey, what if THIS happens? Look at that bit! What if this happens?!" I ignored it, but it turns out that it was even righter (I swear that's a word! heh) than I expected. Wow.

This was one of those stories that just gets woven tighter and tighter and all you can do is hold on for the ride.

One of my other "spoilers" was Sarah Waters herself. She did a concert with the Indigo Girls this year and, among other things, read the sex scene that ends with "You pearl...". So I was quite confused when I came to that section in part one and there was no mention of pearls... *ahem* I had NO idea what was going on!! She was right though when she said that there was no way to describe what had happened in the book up to that point! :laugh Here's the link if you'd like to listen.

French&Saunders are spoofing Tipping The Velvet amongst other TV shows in their Christmas special on BBC1 Christmas day at 10.55 pm.

And Rachel Stirling can be seen in a one off drama on ITV called Bait on Fri Dec 27 at 9pm.

I enjoyed Fingersmith more than Tipping the Velvet... I loved the ending to Fingersmith. The plot was kind of weird! - but it was really good fun and I found it more compulsive than TtV. Affinity is not such a happy book, but still strikingly well-written.

Postby tyche » Tue Dec 17, 2002 12:10 pm

Here are the details:

ITV1, Friday 27th Dec. 2002, 9pm

Bait

When Jack Blake rescues Pam Raeburn and her daughter Stephanie from their stranded car on a rainy night, he is immediately struck by Stephanie's resemblence to his murdered daughter. The two women then become unwitting pawns in a dangerous plan to lure Jack's daughter's killer from the shadows.

Cast:

Jack Blake - John Hurt

Pam Raeburn - Sheila Hancock

Stephanie Raeburn - Rachael Stirling

Millicent White - Angeline Ball

People with access to the digital channel ITV2 can also watch last year's version of 'Othello' (which is pretty good, and co-stars Rachael Stirling and Keeley Hawes as best friends) on New Year's Day at 9.30pm.

Happy viewing!

Oh Rane, I agree the end of Affinity left me way upset. But that's a testament to the writing. I got so involved in that story, the characters... I've all of her books and Fingersmith is definitely my favorite. I like how the story is told in 3 parts each part from a different point of view. They really should make all her books into movies.

Glad you posted this magicpixie. I finished Affinity last night and was annoyed/disappointed with the ending. I agree, she's a masterful writer, and her style diverged so greatly from Tipping I began to wonder that she was the same author! But I have to classify Affinity thusly: "read last page, close cover, sigh, then curse loudly and throw the book as hard as you can against the nearest wall." I was so not expecting that outcome; yes, very cleverly written - but I wasn't sure I wanted to read Fingersmith, if it ran the same lines as Affinity. I hate when reality intrudes on escapism. I'll take your recommendation of the compulsive read and crack the spine tonight.

true, true dri. Affinity was fantastic to read and i too got very wrapped up in it that the little clues did not add up until it was too late. but the ending still left me shcoked.

Fingersmith is certainly my favorite as well though part three of TTV is up there with it. I love the roving POV of Fingersmith, you connect mroe with the characters like that. I think it'd make a great film in any time period.

patches- great classification for affinity! lol.. i;d throw it too but then quickly read the ending to fingersmith and there you go!
