Witchhunter Robin

Postby TaraLivesOn » Fri Apr 16, 2004 1:50 am

I was surprised I couldn't find a thread on this already...

Some of you have probably seen the anime Witchhunter Robin on the Cartoon Network's "adult swim".

However did you know the scifi channel is working on a live action version of it?

Quote:
(from a Sci Fi press release) A live action adaptation of the popular Japanese anime series, Witchhunter Robin is a gritty urban tale of action and horror. A small, specialized team of cops set out to capture rogue "witches" who are abusing their powers. Robin is the newest member of the team -- but she is also a witch. A combination that makes her a great cop -- and a danger to everyone around her. Joe Menosky (Anonymous Rex) is on board as writer and executive producer of this clever and edgy series; Roy Lee (The Ring) and Doug Davison will also executive produce.

I have heard about this, but I have not seen it yet.

Netflix has the DVDs, so I might get that.

So what can you tell those of us who have never seen it?

I bought the Witchhunter Robin series in its original Japanese and I have to say I'm as hooked on it as I am the Noir series. I didn't know it was being aired on the Cartoon Network so I'll have to check that out. The animation isn't quite as good as say Blood: The Last Vampire, LAIN or Jin Roh, but the storyline has definitely captured my attention.

The storyline is very clever. At first, based on the title alone, I was like, I dunno if I can watch a show that "hunts" witches and treats them as evil. But that's the twist itself, as the show exposes the prejudice and irony as two of the hunters are witches themselves. They are in a government taskforce looking for those using their power for evil (which seems to happen alot since the newbies often go crazy with their newfound abilities).

The story unfolds as Robin is not what she seems to be. By the way, these are not "traditional" witches in the sense we know them, its more like different powers of ESP. Robin is a firestarter which may not seem like a very dynamic "power" except she has tremendous control over the abilitiy. They do use little connections like charms & earth/air/fire/water but don't expect W & T types of moments.

Once you take out commercials, they are only 20 minute little segments of course, but there are 26 of them and since the series was so successful there is strong talk of continuing it. The first few episodes seem to go slowly but after half a dozen you'll be hooked for sure.

A live action, american made version of this should be quite interesting. With the right actors and good writing it could really take off.

You can see Witchhunter Robin in english on the Cartoon Network every night at midnight and 3am eastern from Monday through Thursday.

Kieli I've seen "Blood: The Last Vampire" and you are right the anime quality is truly incredible (decent storyline too but way too short). From what I have read, with the cost and hours needed for that technique we won't see it very often (it was the first Japanese anime with all digitally-rendered background, looks amazing).

I'm going to check out Noir, wondering what that's about? Normally I only like strong female storylines (though I have a very guilty habit of watching "Inuyasha" on Adult Swim).

Oh yes, Blood was WAY too short...I did hear, however, that a sequel was in the offing for 2004. Unfortunately, I've not seen much to substantiate the rumour.

Noir is about a highly skilled female assassin, Mireille Bouquet, who's works under the anonymous tag, Noir. No one knows who she really is until one day she crosses paths with a young Japanese schoolgirl, Kirika Yumura, who possesses exceptional killing skills but does not know how he acquired them or why she has them. She contacted Noir to help her find the missing pieces to her past. Mireille reluctantly agrees to help her but stipulates that she will kill Kirika once they find out the truth about her past. Kirika agrees and together they become the most efficient killing machine alive.

Their collaboration takes a ton of twists and turns and they finally realize that somehow their lives and respective fates are intertwined and Mirielle can no longer make good on her promise to kill Kirika. The plot is amazingly complex and the story spans 7 DVDs (all of which I own) that have five tv episodes per DVD. These chicks rock and each episode is packed with them dispatching their targets with a coolness that would make Xena shudder. This series is well worth seeing IMHO

I found this little screencap gallery, looks alot "softer" than Witchhunter Robin.

Now I've just taken a look at some clips of Noir. It's interesting and high quality (and available with english dubs) but it doesn't seem as endearing to me as Witchunter Robin which has a darker and more occult style look to it.

I disagree.....Noir is not fluff by any means...it's just that both are dealing with very different genres: Robin dealing more with the occult and Noir dealing more action/adventure style stuff. The screencaps so do not do Noir justice. The haunting soundtrack that plays in the background and the interaction b/w Mireille and Kirika make all the difference. I tried to also get into Sol Bianca too but....I've not gotten there yet.

Unfortunately Cartoon Network has just stopped showing Witchhunter Robin :-( If you can get it on netflix I highly recommend it.

My new anime obsession is "Ghost in the Shell SAC" (don't get the wrong impression from the trailer, its not all war, lots of drama too). You just have to see the Tachikomaz (the blue mini machines in the trailer) they are just too cute.

Here is the impressive opening for season 1, though note the real show is not 3d rendered like that.

It's only being shown in Japan right now or on very expensive imported DVDs. Very intense stuff. Look for it on Cartoon Network in the fall with english dubs.

Okay, whenever I see anime mentioned, I always feel compelled to add my comments. :)

Witch Hunter Robin is really good, but I still haven't seen the last half of it. I had to stop half way through, 'cause I had been watching it when the fansubs were releasing it and they hadn't finished all the way through at that time. Then I forgot to finish watching... But still pretty impressed with what I've seen. I've seen glimpses of it on Cartoon Network, but because I have an aversion to dubs, I just can't watch it. It ruins it for me. I guess I'm too much of a purist. :lol

Noir also rocks. Still haven't seen it all the way (I have a weird knack for starting series than not finishing them...). But my wall is currently covered in Noir wallscrolls and posters. Mireille and Kirika are just too cool. :D

Ghost in the Shell is cool, too, but I unfortunately haven't had a chance to see much of it. Didn't get the fansubs when they came out, and have too many other things lined up that I want to buy before I can think about getting it. But I think there's a season 2 and a special that revolves around the Tachikomaz that you like so much. :) You might be able to download 'em via bittorrent or search for 'em on irc.

For another cool supernatural powers kind of show/OVA, you guys should check out Read or Die AKA R.O.D. The first part's an OVA (3 eps), and the story revolves around a character named Yomiko Readman AKA The Paper. Her power basically has to do with... well... paper. :lol She can manipulate it almost anyway she wants, which is really neat. And though she's a little flighty at times, she proves to be a very capable secret agent type person. The whole feel of the anime gives off a James Bond meets supernatural anime type feel. Very cool. And recently released in Japan was the OVA's sequel, Read or Dream, which is a fun and, at times, very intense continuation of the storyline. You can find it on bittorrent by a couple of different fansubbers, though I'd recommend AonE 'cause they did a really good job translating everything.

Ack! Okay, I think I've typed enough. Sorry, anime's one of my BIG obsessions, so once I get going it's hard to stop me. =P

Okay, I can't help it... a few more quick, random recommendations: Utena (for crazy, what the hell?? factor), Maria-sama ga Miteru (kinda slow-paced shoujo story, but with lots of fun characters. My current obsession), Haibane Renmei (from creators of Lain, NieA Under 7, etc), Tsukikage Ran (Xena as a samurai!), Azumanga Daioh (cute!!!)... okay, I'm stopping now. Yep, really stopping... really... *pulls herself away from keyboard*

What I liked about Witch Hunter Robin is the atmosphere. Who liked it might want to try Hellsing too, that's vampires and Vatican assassins and goodies :) And Tsukihime, that is pretty good.

The last anime I watched and liked is Elfen Lied, but it's even less of a kiddie show than the others mentioned here so be warned. :)
