GROOVY - The Evil Dead Thread

Postby The Smee » Mon Apr 14, 2003 11:28 pm

Howdy all.

As the Kitten has a few movie threads, I thought it was time for one about the greatest film trilogy ever (bar quite a few better trilogies) - EVIL DEAD.

To anyone who is not familiar with these masterful films, they are the height of the horror/comedy/hellofalotofblood B-movie genre. Well, except Braindead.

Um.

So, yes. This is a thread to discuss what you like/dislike about the films and the people connected to them (as in, Sam Raimi and BRUCE), and your experiences with them.

My favourite bits are anything to do with the chainsaw. If it's on the screen, it's my favourite bit. And anything to do with the witch in the basement, because I always thought that she was the best bad guy of the lot.

What I don't like? Um...that there isn't a fourth? There's nothing to not like about them. Anybody who says otherwise...shouldn't be here, really. Run along now.

So. Let the posting commence, and hail to the king, baby.

Oh yeah, I have all three movies on DVD, I got all of them at a Halloween sale at Kmart last year :laugh

I remember when part 2 came out, everyone at school was saying that it was awesome, so I watched it with a friend and we laughed our asses off, it's so over the top :rollin

Bruce Campbell is hilarious, he just cracks me up :lol

When it comes to B movies, this trilogy is hard to beat, just funny as hell.

Groovy! I liked the first one okay, but I think the series really came into its own when they embraced the whole comedy thing, which Bruce does so well.

The "Groovy" line is a classic.

These films are brilliant. Though I've only ever seen 1 & 2 :sob

Of course any film with Bruce Campbell in has got to be good.

I think the best moment is when, just before cutting his own hand off, Bruce shouts

I love these films!

I remember dragging my then girlfriend to see "Army of Darkness". She hated it, so I knew the relationship was doomed.

And if I can make a not so subtle plug...Eden Studios is doing an "Army of Darkness" RPG and CCG.

edenstudios.net/aodrpg/

It uses the same rule system as all their other games, so you could use it to play my adventures in Pens. And it will be cheaper than some other branded (and OT) titles they have.

I am really looking forward to this one!

Evil Dead III a.k.a. Army of Darkness... that classic that brought us such glorious lines as (via Nora's Sketchy Memory-Vision TM):

"Aw, baby, that's just what we like to call 'pillow talk' "

"I may be (pause) bad, but I feel (BIG pause) good."

and my absolute favorite...

"Hey, she-bitch-- come get some."

Anyone who hasn't seen this movie needs to drop whatever they are doing and go see it NOW! (well, maybe that's an exaggeration)

Heh, I was just re-watching my Army of Darkness DVD the other day (and really camping it up in chat...wonder where this idea came from :wink ?)

Of course my favourite lines are:

AoD was fun but a little too over the top for me. Evil Dead 2 is still my favorite. Bruce Campbell is great though, either in the ED movies or as Autolycus in Xena. In early seasons, I was wishing that he'd have a short role on Buffy.

I haven't seen Army of Darkness yet but I soon will.

I thought the second was funnier than the first one.

Anything with the chainsaw is... quite something!

What's funny is to watch it with someone scared of that kind of movie.

Hell Yea!

Bruce Cambell will always be a god to me if only for these three movies.

My favorite phisical comedy shtick was the evil hand. Classic.

I tried explaining the hilarity of this scene to my mom once and that was a comedy in and of itself. She just couldn't find the funny in someone chopping off his own rebellious hand:p . Oh well.

'Groovy' is part of my permanent vocab because of that movie.

"Honey, you got real ugly."

"Shop smart. Shop S-Mart."

"Who wants some?"

Classic.

You know normally I don't go for horror movies with all the guts and blood, the title hinted at such a thing, but now reading this thread I feel a bit deprived. I guess I'm gonna have to rent them, huh....

I used to watch horror movies when I was about 12 till I was 14 or so. We only had 2 tv stations in the Netherlands back then, so in my town several 'pirate' tv and radio stations were operating. I've seen quite a few porn movies and horror movies thanks to them. I've seen Evil Dead part one, though I don't remember much about it, except that it amused me, I used to give detailed report to one of my girlfriends who liked to be freaked out but who was afraid to watch it herself. So I had to look, for her, it was a friend's duty. I remember The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a bit more vividly, it had some memorable scenes involving, well chainsaws obviously, meathooks and lots of ketchup. The good old days. I actually don't like 'real' violent movies, the Bone Collector has scarred me for life I think, but these horror movies are just too silly to be really scary. I haven't watched them in a long time, the modern day horror movies just aren't the same.

I have his book -- a signed copy, no less! (he wrote "Hey Matt -- Stay Groovy!" (signed) Bruce Campbell). Cool guy. Great book; I heartily recommend it to anybody.

I would kill to see the old Super-8 movies he and Sam and their cronies shot back in the day, like the Three Stooges knock-offs they did.

AoD was, ironically, the first of the ED movies I saw, though I had heard about the EDs, mostly from The Incredibly Strange Film Show. What I saw was enough to convince me to try and see these movies.

"Good...bad...I'm the guy with the gun."

"Klaatu...barada...nHHHEMMGHHARARRRRR!"

"The names's Ash" (cocks shotgun with a cool flip down-and-up motion) "Housewares."

(Ash even had a cameo in one of my stories...) :whistle

The Car. That car is the baddest car ever. It could only be cooler if it was a Nova.

The Hand from ED2, and the little Ashes from AoD. Bwahahaha. I always thought Bruce Campbell should have had a spot on Buffy as Xander's drunk Uncle Rory, the one with the cool car, and the crazy stories, that ended up being true.

I haven't seen any of those movies in like 2 weeks, may have to drag them out... Laney

I absolutely love these movies. I saw Evil Dead 2 when I was about 8 and so was pretty freaked out. I never saw ED1 all the way through before, though I'm tempted to, just for the tree rape scene.

I loved the films so much in fact that I started to read a lot of HP Lovecraft. His stories are so great (though he tends to waffle on about things :P). I desperately want a Cthulhu plush toy. Yes. For me. *nod*

No particular favourite bits for me, they're all just so great. Shame about the video games.

Hey,

Anyone have any of these films on DVD? Are there any extras?

I know about the alternate endings and the documentary on the AoD disc (it's that same as the tape) but is there anything else?

I'd like to pick these up, but want to hear about them first.

Oh wow, an evil dead thread, rock on!

I loved these movies so much! I swear that I have never seen a more gorier movie than this and probably never will again.

I recommend playing a fistful of boomstick very much so. There is nothing better than struttin' around good ol' dearborn as Ash, chainsaw in one hand, boomstick in the other. Then you see some slimy deadite on your turf, you know what you gotta do. Chop his goddamn head off, thats what!

I often caught myself yelling at the screen, "Bring it on, deadite scum!" or something to that effect. Hee, fun.

Just a few more priceless gems:

Demon: I'll swallow your soul!! I'll swallow your soul!!

[Ash points his shotgun at the Demon's head]

Ash: Swallow this!

Ash: Gun control means hitting your target, remember that.

Ash: You ain't leading but two things right now: Jack and Shit. And Jack just left town.

Arthur: Are all men from the future loud-mouthed braggarts?

Ash: Nope. Just me baby... Just me.

(A personal fav of mine, hehehe.)

Hiya Kittens,

Thought I'd jump on here and let you know that as I went out last night to get my Playstation 2 Buffy game, I saw a Playstation 2 Evil Dead-A Fistful of Boomstick game. Of course, I thought of this thread immediately and got a smile on my face :grin .

As for the movies, I really liked them. It's one of those childhood memories things. However, I remember my brother and his friends going on and on about them so of course, I had to pretend to not like them. It was an unspoken rule with my brother and I that we had to fight about everything we possibly could. If I liked something, he did'nt and vice versa. Anyway, they were groovy movies and will live on.

Everything Evil Is Dead Again

Raimi and Campbell to remake horror classic

18 November 2004

Stop a hundred horror junkies in the street and ask them for the best horror film of all time and you can be sure at least half will pipe up with one of Sam Raimi's glorious Evil Dead films. While we at the Empire office may wrangle (and occasionally strangle) over which of the three is the better film, there's no denying that this gory triumvirate proved definitively that a) Raimi is a god among men b) Bruce Campbell is the most underrated actor alive and c) plasticine is a LOT scarier than we were led to believe as children.

Bearing all this in mind, you will perhaps be both overjoyed and mortified to learn that the iconic Evil Dead has been added to the remake roster. Before you panic, it's worth mentioning that Raimi, Campbell and original producing partner Rob Tapert will be overseeing the project so it's certainly in safe hands. The downside though, is that Raimi won't be directing.

On the one hand, updating a classic with modern technology seems like a good idea but, with Evil Dead, the low tech approach was one of its charms. You wouldn't go into the Louvre and start redoing Monet's work as Magic Eye drawings now would you? No you wouldn't, because the French would have your eyes. The same holds true here. Oh we're fascinated to see what they come up with but, even with Raimi at the wheel, this would be a risky proposition and without him? Well, things do not bode well.

Its unclear whether Campbell will return to play Ashly 'Ash' Williams, but the thought of anyone else taking up the boomstick is almost too terrible to contemplate.

I'd love to see a remake. I have all three on tape and AOD on DVD.

Tim: This is forever after your post but one DVD edtion of AOD that I can recommend is:

Army of Darkness (Boomstick Edition)

It has the director's cut with extended scenes and the original ending. It also a second DVD with the theatrical release (I liked the S-Mart stuff). The behind-the-scenes featurette "The Men Behind the Army" is great and you can see Robert Tapert of Xena fetching coffee for Sam Raimi or some such(their level of success has remained the same to date). ;) I think that this may be the definitive version as it comines the bootleg verion with the theatrical one.

Boy there sure have been alot of editions of AOD:
