Melissa Etheridge is engaged, and David Crosby had nothing to do with it.





The Grammy-winning singer announced her engagement to gal-pal Tammy Lynn Michaels via her rep on Tuesday.



The couple, who reportedly started dating two years ago, are planning a holiday 2003 wedding. It'll be a first trip down the aisle for both.



After the ceremony, they plan to continue living in Los Angeles, according to Etheridge's spokesman.



Etheridge, 41, spent 12 years with former partner Julie Cypher. The two met while Cypher was married to actor Lou Diamond Phillips and was working as assistant director on a music video Etheridge was shooting.



They went on to have two children together, Bailey and Becket, each born by Cypher with Crosby contributing his sperm for the cause. The lesbian duo split in 2000.



Michaels, 28, is best known for playing high-maintenance princess Nicole Julian on the defunct WB series Popular. She's reportedly signed to star in the Jennifer Love Hewitt vehicle Why Can't I Be Audrey Hepburn?, slated for a 2004 release.



Etheridge's life has been an open book since the singer-songwriter came out in 1993. Crosby's paternity status was splashed across the cover of Rolling Stone magazine; Etheridge then exorcised the demons of her breakup with Cypher in her 2001 album Skin and later that year disclosed that she'd been sexually abused by her older sister in her book The Truth Is: My Life in Love and Music. Finally, she introduced fans to Michaels last year through her concert video Live…And Powerful.

xita, KFWB mentioned Melissa's engagement today, just as respectfully and matter-of-factly as it would have an engagement between two heterosexual entertainers. I thought that in itself was cool.



I hope Melissa and Tammy Lynn Michaels have a long, happy marriage. (And on a selfish personal note, that's one star wedding I would love to play for. )

Not wishing to rain on anyone's parade, but what do the terms "engagement" and "marriage" mean to a lesbian couple who can do neither in the eyes of the law? Just wondering. Are they a placebo term?

I was being patient, but it took too long. I mean, I miss Buffy, I do. But life shouldn't just stop because she's gone.

I wanna reply to this one but remember it's just a reply from me and not from lesbians everywhere. I stand alone and what the terms mean to me might be very different for someone else. Ok...gets off my soapbox.



Engagement and Marriage - Engagement is the same for any couple it's the stretch of time in which much nervous waiting is invovlved. It's the beging of a commitment to someone else. Marriage is just making that commitment known to those around you and asking them to bless that. Everyone I know thinks that marriage is big thing...a church wedding is really nothing more then asking God and the community around you to bless the relationship that you have with another person and asking them you help you grow together. So for me both are just ways to let the people and world around you know that you are in love and ready to commit your life to that person.

KFWB and BBC? You know what I love about this is that it is getting publicized everywhere and that the publicity is not about whether there should be gay marriages. It's just another celeb announcement like any other. It shows great progress and hopefully the law can catch up with society one day.

I have allways been a firm believer in marriage and I am glad to hear this announcement is being handled so matter-of-factly.



In Illinois we have a Gov. that supposedly is going to consider legalizing gay marriages, but I have my doubts. He didn't stand up to Daley (Chicago's Mayor) when he sent bulldozers out to tear up an inuse airport and airfield for his own personal reasons, so I seriously doubt he will stand up to the voters downstate either.

Speaking as another "engaged" lesbian, these past few months I've done a lot of questioning in regards to this issue while navigating, in a wholly new way, the always interesting waters of how the government, my family, my friends, my company, society at large, and I, myself, define "marriage." Couldn't have said it better, Kirby.

I don't know, though. I would consider my girl and I engaged; we both know that we want to spend forever together. . . But somehow the term "engaged" holds so much more punch than "eternally committed." Which is strange considering the societal (lack of) implications regarding the first term. . .

As a huge fan of Melissa Etheridge. I first stumbled across Melissa Etheridge over 10 years ago and have been a fan ever since. I think she is a wonderful musician and seems to be a truly nice person. I wish her and Tammy all the happiness in the world. And I cant wait to hear the many albums that will come from this....
