I also watched a bit of the matches today as well, i caught the end of Sweden/USA. i think that China, Germany, and Brazil will be interesting teams to watch.

I was also disappointed by the news of the WUSA folding, cant say in surprised though, and especially with the problems I have heard about the WNBA as well. It is disappointing to say the least that woman’s sports have such a tough time competing with anything else. Funding will always be an issue. I will be watching and hoping that somehow the league will survive, I grew up with one of the players and would love to see her continue to do what she loves.

Oh yesterday during the US game, I heard them say there is a lead on a new sponsor that could bring the league back. Why must leagues for women threaten to not exist before something comes through. Didn't the wnba go through something similar this year?

OMG... now the good thing first. Gemany won 6:1 vs Argentinia....

BUT: Steffi Jones will not be able to play further in the world cup. The damage in her knee is serious. (I really don't know what it is in English, but she tore one of the ligaments...)

Damned...

So I watched the US play today. Finally got to see a game. They should stop playing when I'm at school. :)

They're advancing to the quarterfinals! Go them. They won 3 to 0 today. Anyway, I hope I'll be able to see more of the action.

Germany is looking really strong, very impressed with them as I am with Norway inspite of their loss. Brazil could surprise. The US of course looks strong and Mia has never looked better. I was disappointed she didn't start today's game. I understand the reasons why though look at what happened to Steffi Jones. I am very impressed with Germany's Prinz as well. I remember her from the last world cup, she had short hair then. All in all the games should start getting more competitive now. I look forward to it!

I am having to tape the matches but I've pretty much watched them all I think. Today's performance by the Nigerian Goalie in the first half was also very impressive!

Yeah, it'll be fun to see some more evenly matched games, while it's nice to see lots of goals scored, it's a bit boring when it's obvious who's going to win. I say this as a totally neutral viewer.

Can I just say the referee in the USA vs Korea game was AWFUL!!!! It's not like there was lots to do, but there were lots of mistakes!

While I was watching that match, the phone rang. I was half listening to the tv and I'm sure I heard the commentator mention that one of the USA team was going out with Gary Charles (who is an ex-West Ham defender) and that he died in August. I've searched all over the place for any info on this but can find no mention of it. If anyone who knows the US team a little better than I do (wouldn't be hard) knows which player it is or if I heard it right or anything, I'd be grateful if they could let me know. Thanks.

Ahh yes, in my mind that will be the final. Germany is the strongest team so far. We'll have to see.

It was a great game though, a lot closer than i would have thought. Kudos to Sweden, anyone could have won it. Still I think throughout the tournament, Germany was the best team. That prinz sure is something.

It was also nice to see all those people in the stands, despite the fact that the US wasn't in the finals.

I really wanted Sweden to win, though Germany definitely deserved it the way they've been playing in the tournament.

As usual, some of the calls by the refs were rather suspect, but relatively speaking pretty reasonable, I suppose.

Women's soccer in the 2004 Olympics should be very interesting. I think this WC has really lit a fire under some teams.

Wow. I saw the US vs. Canada match for 3rd place, and how sad was that? I mean, not sad because the US lost, they won, but sad because it was most of the women's last World Cup. And, after the Olympics, they'll probably be done with soccer. Especially, if there is no US women's league anymore. I'll miss watching them play, I grew up watching most of them. It'll be sad to not be able to see them anymore. :cry

I've read different things on the future of the league. I can't link now but one said that the league would go on , just the way of doing business would change or something like that. Then , that's all I have been able to find. I wish it wasn't gone... I'll miss my mia hamm, that girl is so hot.. sorry :p So cute in that segment during halftime with her jumping up and down on the bed cause of the baseball :p ok oh well! I hope it goes on in some way.

It would be a great loss for the worlds soccer if the WUSA wouldn't go on.

It is the only possibility for a lot of great players to play professional. They can concentrate on soccer an so improve their abilitys. A lot of german players played in the WUSA the last years and I think it was part of the succes now.

The final was a great match, I think the Germans just deserved the win but it really could have gone either way. I didn't get to see the 3rd place play-off though. Was it a good match?

Switching to men's football for a mo. Hahahahahaha Aston Villa have given Alpay a week's leave after his antics at the weekend against England. I hope he won't be playing in this country again his behaviour was disgraceful! Now he's trying to get out of trouble by saying Beck's started it by spitting on him. This is SO not true, if it was there'd be footage all over the papers as we Brits are the first to condemn that kind of thing. The press would be all over him.

World Cup

Postby amberbensontotallyrules4e » Sun Oct 26, 2003 10:40 am

I'm devastated that Sweden or the US didn't win! Yeh, Germany deserved it, but gotta love those Swedes. Mind you, cos I'm in love with a Swede, that would explain it! Good match though, was the final.

I too am gonna switch over to men's soccer. Go Liverpool! At last a win. But then, it shows how important Michael Owen is to us. The first game that we win in three is the game that he makes his comeback from injury, and he scores! I know he played against Arsenal, but we completely deserved to win that, and probably would have if he'd stayed on.

Yay 3-1. Please be the season back on track...

There's an article here about Italian club Perugia wanting to sign Sweden's Hanna Ljungberg to play as part of their male team.

Quote:
A spokesperson from the Italian Football Federation revealed that there is no law preventing females playing alongside male footballers in Italy.

"We do not have a law in Italy that says it is impossible to do it, it is forbidden," the spokesperson told this website.

"We are still talking to our lawyers to get a clearer idea of the situation because we have nothing on it in our rule-book at the moment."

They obviously have different rules than us, as I know that it's a rule of the English F.A. that girls and boys are not allowed to play together after a certain age. I'm not sure how old it is, but it's something like 9-10 I think. If either of these signings do go ahead (they're interested in her or Victoria Svensson) what does this mean for clubs in the rest of the world? Surely there can't be such diverse rules over who can play for your club. Personally, I can't see this happening right now and I wouldn't be surprised if the Italian Footbal Federation came up with something to block it.

According to the paper today, Perugia have now signed Ljungberg, which is fantastic! In the UK, the age that girls and boys have to stop playing together is 11, but that's ridiculous!!! When my soccer team played the boys team of the same club, we beat the guys 3-1!!! It can't be that women aren't good enough to play, and come on, most of the players in the Premiership can't ake the slightest knocks, so it can't be that women are more likely to be injured by playing alongside men.

Well, that's my mini-rant done, I really hope its true that Perugia signed her, because it would have to bring about reform. Right? Good luck Ljunberg! We're right behind ya!

So, this thread kinda went dead, but I've spent ages trying to find it so I can just say one thing : "Championes, Championes, Ole, Ole, Ole!"

So it's gonna be more than one thing really cos I think I need to qualify that statement! Who would have thought that at 3-0 down at halftime last night Liverpool would battle back to beat Milan? I really believed that we could do it before the game, but the heads were down in our house at halftime. We still believed that if the Liverpool we know are in those players somewhere appeared for the second half, we could do it, but after such an insipid performance in the first half, we weren't sure that the boys would appear and play their hearts out... but they did!

Dudek's antics on penalites were hilarious, Grobelaar Jr... And what a superb performance the second half was, especially from the God his parents call Steven Gerrard :bow , and the near-God Jamie Carragher :bow . Those boys epitomize the Liverpool spirit. Now lets hope that UEFA let us defend the trophy next season.

And the G-ster is staying! It's looking definite now! YES!!!!!!!!

Sorry to bore you guys if you're not interested, but Liverpool Football Club are like my life, so I had to share the joy.
