Yup. Celebrations, collection of "angpow" (red packets with money) & visiting of relatives all happen within these 15 days. On the 9th day of the CNY it's a Festival of a god called "kow wong yeh", I'm not sure of what kinda god he is. Midnight tonight, there would be prayers or something to welcome and usher in the New Year, praying to a god "tien gong", I don't really know much about that either :p bad me. On the final day of the CNY celebrations is the Chinese equavalent of Valentine's day. Young people and unmarried people(usually girls) throw mandarin oranges into the river and make a wish. Hoping to find a significant other. Story goes like the person down the river (usually boys) would pick an orange from the river. Whoever's name is on the orange would be the one meant for them. Corny... I'd take a boat and sit downstream with a net and fish out the oranges to sell back to those girls :p it's a wonder why I don't have tons of girls running after me in lust. :p

A happy 4071 to everyone who has the good luck to not have to deal with the Western calendar.

I knew there was a Chinese New Year thread out there! Happy Chinese New Year, everyone!

I've always felt we need more holidays, and this is one of my favourites from outside my own culture. I envy those Kittens who live in a city that has a vibrant Chinatown - alas! Nashville is not one of those cities! Best I can do here is go down to the local China Buffet for lunch and watch some kung-fu movies tonight.

Hmmm ... as opposed to almost every other day when I do the exact same thing.

Ah, well. If you're lucky enough to have a Chinatown in your city, go out and enjoy the festivities!

???!
I spent most of my money on liquor and women,
The rest I wasted.
