So there we are it's that time of the year again.



Here's a nice place to start. It has a calendar among other things.



This year's Los Angeles Pride festival should be fun! Belinda Carlisle and Cyndi Lauper will be both be on stage the weekend of June 21. I am excited I might actually go for a change.

well, seeing that i haven't ever been to any of the pride events, it was suggested that i go to my first parade in nyc. so that's where i'm headed with a few friends...anyone else gonna be there?!

ETA: GG's feeling a little under the weather, so I won't be in Lansing tomorrow. However, Grand Rapids (Michigan) Pride is next Saturday, June 21, 3-9, and I'm gonna try and make that. Whenever, wherever, however, it's always a good time for pride!

The Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles is planning to make a big showing at the parade on June 22. My church, All Saints Pasadena, has been the headquarters for "Claiming the Blessing," a movement to introduce a resolution at this year's national convention that would authorize the blessing of same-sex unions throughout the church. We have a float that one of our bishops plans to ride on, and we're organizing to send all our youth groups down there to march. I think they're hoping to have at least 500 people from around the diocese. I won't make it, though - my choir is scheduled to sing in the regular services that morning. I know we're going to be shorthanded, though, because some of my friends are going anyway.

Belinda Carlisle and Cyndi Lauper, color me jealous, why can't they wait a month? I hope we get good old Willeke Alberti (she is world famous in the Netherlands) at the Dutch Gay Pride again this year. So sorry I missed her last year, I was too tired dammit, that won't happen to me again.

T Maclay, I think Pride is the combination of power and par-tay.



Par-tay is pretty obvious: you get to see a bunch of people who either 1) share, or 2) probably won't bother you, sexually. There's usually food, music, "refreshing beverages", lots o' Rainbow Colors and, being summer in the northern hemisphere, Sun & Fun!



Power: hey, I'm not alone! There's lots of people like me---and they don't want to be fired, or beaten up, or denied the right to marry---either! It's a heady experience, especially if you've never been to a Pride event before (and moreso if you come from smalltown/rural/conservative place where few queers are out).

I think pride is great when you are coming out. It's very powerful to see so many gay people together in once place and see all the types there. In Los Angeles, it is a 2/3 day festival. At the festival there is dancing and entertainment on the stages, lots of food and lots of shopping. A lot of small vendors are there and you can get all kinds of neat things. The parade itself is amazing, that's when most people go and it's quite a sight. I think when I was 19 one of the biggest thrills was seeing my favorite seismologist in the "gay and lesbian scientist" section of the parade. In souther CA the seismologist are minor celebs because of the comfort and information they bring after a major earthquake. But it's good times to see all kinds of people having fun and not being ashamed. I know these parades and events provided a greater comfort just a couple of decades ago when being gay was much more of a big deal (at least in the big cities). It's a big party nonetheless and people who enjoy that will love pride. Unfortunately, I am not one for a crowd of people so for about a decade I haven't been to pride much. I'd like to go this year though since it's been a while.

Today I had my first pride experience and only because I happened to make plans to bring my nephew to the park near by where the festival was being held. When I got to the parking lot and a man came up to my car window and asked if I was looking for parking to the gay pride festival I was just a little shocked considering I was accompanied by a friend who I haven’t come out to yet.

But as per the request of my friend and my sister we decided to check it out. And I’ll tell you, for as little time we spent there, it was such a great experience for me.

I know exactly two lesbians, I have no gay friends and only 4 people in my life know I’m gay.

It was very cathartic to be surrounded by so many people that are proud to be something that I keep hidden. To hear some strange mans voice come over the loud speaker talking about how right now is about being out, feeling safe and being proud of who you are. Then to have my friend turn to me and say, “That just gave me chills” when she heard him say that.

I think I built up just a little more courage today.

Well I participate to a parade for the first time in 1999. It made my blood rush quicker. I felt powerful, as the Liberty guiding her people in that Delacroix's painting at Louvre.



In 2000 I worked as a volunteer for the World Pride (here in Rome), and well when I saw 800.000 persons, glbt and not, and families and children, with rainbow flags I felt my heart squeezing in my chest for the emotion.



A pride parade is an experience I recommend.

Yay! Pride... you know it's just fun. It's a place to meet up with people that I only see about once a year. And this year we're going to see Cyndi Lauper in Minneapolis! Woo Hoo but I agree it is TRULY incredible when you are first coming out. I'll never forget the first time Peg and I walked down to that park... and saw over 50,000 people just like us. And how MARVELOUS it was to hold hands and walk in public. It was breathtaking... and it gave me the courage to finally come out to my family.



Here we are 10 years later... and we just LOVE to go back. It's WAY bigger now... I swear you can barely walk thru all the people at times... and the parade is 2 hours long! YAY PRIDE!!!

I think I'm gonna volunteer at San Diego Pride this year . . . Maybe Dyke March too, if I can make it to any of the meetings. Dyke March is downtown this year, no more of that reclaiming the queer neighborhoods nonsense. So much excitement.

Ours is this upcoming weekend, and I haven't heard of any of the bands; the events don't look interesting or entertaining; and I wouldn't feel comfortable going in my home community. I've made a lot of steps this year comfort level wise, but I'm not at that stage yet. I think I'm at a big whopping maybe; not having the "I was only going b/c of Cyndi Lauper" excuse readily available.

Due to money issues that arose recently I won’t be able to make it to SF Pride this year. I was there last year and the year before and I had a blast. I will however plan on going to Los Angeles Pride June-22 just cause it seems like a nice and relaxed way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I've been there before and had fun. It will be a nice change of pace from Saturdays June-21 planned events, cause I’m being dragged to the “Erotica L.A. 2003” convention and I’m sure it will interesting.

Chicagoland kittens: the 34th Annual Pride Parade will be held Sunday, June 29 at 12:00 noon starting at the corner of Halstead and Belmont. Last year’s event was jammed with people throughout the whole route and a good time was had by all, including most of the straight onlookers. Hopefully this year will be more of the same and the weather will cooperate. I may take a weekend excursion out there and check it out as the Michigan parade (as usual) wasn’t much to write home about.

Just curious, but how insane would it be to try and drive to SF for the festivities, especially since I don't know the area at all and the traffic would probably be horrendous. I'd be coming from the Sacramento area, and I have a feeling I'd get lost a bazillion times. I'm still trying to decide if it's worth it to try and go or not.

I just got done talking with a friend who marched in the LA Pride Parade this morning. He said it was a very good time - the Episcopal Church alone had about 400 to 450 people there. And they didn't even get rained on, which is more than I can say for those of us who stayed behind in Pasadena.



Did anybody else go? Did you all have a good time?

I didn't go to our local parade, but we had a film festival I went to. I got to see "One Small Step" by Catherine Crouch and also "Boychick" among others. I desperately want a copy of "One Small Step" after seeing it: I won't like green beans. Mama, I wanna marry Peggy. But you said I could do anything!! If you kiss your elbow, you can change into a boy.



It's set in 1968 around the Apollo mission, with a little girl learning that "anything" doesn't include marrying the neighbor girl....at least not yet.



Does anyone have or know where I could get a copy of this film?
