Athens 2004 Olympic Games

Postby Diebrock » Wed Aug 11, 2004 11:14 am

And we've started!

Women Football:

Germany vs China (8 : 0)

Sweden vs Japan (0 : 1)

Greece vs USA (0 : 3)

Brazil vs Australia (1 : 0)

I'm glad Germany started these Olympics with a bang. But I did feel bad for the Chinese!

I had no idea that soccer had started. I wonder if any of it was televised.

That chinese score is surprising. I am so excited about the olympics. I do so love the entire thing. I can't wait for the opening ceremonies.

Go Brazil!!! :bounce

I watched part of the American soccer game on MSNBC this morning. Greece didn't have any chance...

I'm just glad that we're getting more coverage than the Sydney games. Having 5 channels airing the games will give us, at least, a few hours of each sport.

Heck, I even found out that they will air women's handball! Finally! I played it in high school and always liked it. But, after I moved to the US, whenever I mention it, half of the people don't have a clue what it is...

Looking forward to Volleyball, Women's Basketball and Beach Volleyball. :)

Did you all know that Friday's opening ceremony is going to be held in the same stadium as the ceremony from the 1896 Games? How cool is that? :)

Some of the events I'm really looking forward to are: Women's basketball, athletics, tennis, and loads more.

Yes, Mollyig, I am also counting the minutes to the opening ceremony tonight. :bounce

All my life, I loved the Summer Olympic Games (we never saw the Winter Games in Brazil... I never even knew part of the world called it the "Summer Games", for me it was *The* Games, the only one)!

I don't know, I think specially today it's touching to see all these people from every single corner in the world coming together and defending their flags in a way that does not involve explosions and politics... Maybe that's why I just love to see the parade of nations. :)

And, as much as technology has such a huge impact in all sports, it's just too cool to see the human being finding their limit over and over again.

Just finished watching the opening ceremony - long, but it was worth getting out of bed on a cold Saturday morning - it was a 5.30am start NZ time.

Can't wait for the next 16 days of sport, I love watching all the different events. We get great coverage here on TVNZ - it will be on 7pm -10am every day.

I'm looking forward to seeing some New Zealanders win gold...GO KIWI!!

Yay brian I saw that! I love EY!! I had such a glorious day of watching tv. Women's sports rock. I love all the channels covering. Usually you'll get a little bit of a highlight of a game but I saw entire games by US softball, basketball, soccer, beach volleyball and most of women's indoor volleyball. I saw field hockey, table tennis and badminton. Tonight I get to see handball. I love it. I love it!

Man oh man oh man! I had just gotten home when I found out that Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel (cycling) went down during Women's Road. Sigh. I immediately felt like crying. If there's one person I want to win, it's her. Maybe these Games are not going to be the best for us Dutch... Though we still have De Bruijn and Van Den Hoogeband (swimming), Mia Audina (badminton) and then some who have high potential of winning a medal. So yay for us!

And ooh... Basketbal... The American 'Dream Team' (pardon the expression) lost from Puerto Rico 73 to 92... wow. Who had seen that coming?

Yay Puerto Rico!

As any Philadelphia sports fan will tell you: any team Allen Iverson plays on is doomed. Mr. Attitudinal Ego will lose the game for them...

So Yay Puerto Rico and every other team playing the US. :D

There have been some big upsets these Games - the basketball being one of them (and yes, Iverson was pointed out for stupid play). The mens 400m freestyle relay was another one. Fantastic swim by the South Africans.

The most disturbing thing about the Olympics is that I'm finding myself cheering for the Aussies. This is wrong and goes against my birthright. But I can't help it - I want an Antipodean to win.

As an Irish person, who by tradition generally cheer for the underdog 'cause it's usually us, I was pleased the South Africans caused an upset in the relay. Fair play to them.

The 17 year old French Girl, Laure Manaudou, really impressed yesterday too.

In case anyone is interested, here's a page that has how many medals have been awarded to date. It seems the China and the Aussies are leading with 5 gold each.

Congratulations to all the competitors.

If you click on the country, it will tell you what each medal was awarded for.

Way to go, Ian Thorpe! :) It sounds like the 200m freestyle was a fantastic race with van den Hoogenband leading most of the way - can't wait to watch it on TV tonight. I found out via internet in an article that has me fairly disturbed. "They're" already talking about Phelps as a failure. I'm sorry, but no one who has been in three races and won three medals is a failure. There's something very wrong with that.

I love the US women's softball team. I used to not like Lisa Fernandez but she's really grown on me. I love Jessica Mendoza on the team as well, everybody really. Great team, Cat Osterman is an amazing pitcher.

I've loved all the handball and badminton too :)

Me.the world has caught up.The previous dream teams were a lot more talented and had a lot more heart. In Atlanta this team would have cake walked, but the word has figured out that the perimeter shooting game has really been neglected in the NBA and this team does not have a Byrd or Jordan who can drain it from three point land all night long.

they have worked on taking away the running game which is the US team's main weapon.

i will not root agasinst any US athletes, but I won't cry if the Dream team ges home empty handed.

Phelps is not a failure.Am I the only one tired of the commentators saying that people settled for silver or bronze. They did not settle. They earned those silver and bronze medals.

My ex is from the Republic of South Afrca,if we could not win I am glad the South Africans did.

My favorite events are team handball, which i played when I lived in Germany but have not found anyone here who knows what it is,gymnatics and synchronized swimming which I think is tee totaly beautiful.

Plus I like Feild Hockey which I always wanted to play but can't becuase I am biologicaly male and male field hockey here is almost nonexistant.I tried out for my schools team my junior year and made it as goalie but the district said I could not compete cuase it was unfair to the girls.

Man I wanted to play.I even would have worn the skirt that the gals wore.So I got beat up my three football players for trying out and then can't play.Anywho I am voting for the Aussies. They rock and the gals are steal looking for Gold.

Hopefully in 08 US ladies will qualify in field hockey, they barely missed qaulifying this time. The guys have 28 losses no wins and one tie in olympic play and do not often even qaulify outside of yaers we host the games. They did not even come close to qaulifying.

I was disturbd that Iranian woud not compete against his Israeli opponent in Judo.I had hoped we were beyond that.Goverments make policies, not the athletes.

It made me feel good to see the Iraqi soccer team play and a bunch of Islamic nations having women compete for the first time was great.

I would love to see the nations that only had one athlete win medals but that is unlikely.

I finally saw some handball and I can see why no one in the States knows what it is. Handball here is something entirely different, like a squash or raquetball sort of thing. It looked like fun.

I've seen some of a lot of different things. I like the women's weightlifting a whole lot. I want to touch their arms. sigh

I pretty much just watch to see the women. And things like this:

story.news.yahoo.com/news...&ncid=1756

story.news.yahoo.com/news...&ncid=1756

And this is just too sweet for words:

story.news.yahoo.com/news...&ncid=1756

I like the human-ness of it all, the athletes' faces when they win, when they lose, when they try their best, whether it's good enough or not, it was their best and I respect that. Except for those US basketball guys. :spin

I don't know or care much about sports, but that's the great thing about the Olympics - people who aren't sports fans can still find something worth watching.

Really cool pics, maudmac! Thanks. Beach volleyball and indoor volleyball are my all-time favorites!

I used to play handball in High School and I'm really happy for finally being able to watch some great games on TV.

I watched Field Hockey for the first time and really liked it. I think because it looks like a mix of two of my favorite sports: soccer and hockey. We'll be watching all the matches they air from now on.

Also became a huge fan of rowing. It's so cool! :)

Thank God, my classes will start only next week. I'm just having a blast watching the Games almost all day long...

AMEN! I am so sick of the commentators chatting up Phelps one minute then bashing the poor guy the next that I could just spit tacks. And that Bob Costas needs a large fist in the mouth IMHO :fit2

That's changed quite a bit in some Division II and Division III colleges...high schools not so much but you'd have had more of a shot if you'd been able to go to those divisional colleges.

I was quite happy about this too. It took courage for these women to even attempt to compete for spots on their homeland's Olympic team and for them to actually make it to compete overall is amazing.

And can I say that Lisa Fernandez and Jennie Finch ROCK?! :shock
