Happy Holidays, Kittens!

Postby maudmac » Thu Dec 16, 2004 4:38 am

Happy Hanukkah, Yule, Solstice, Christmas, Boxing Day, and Kwanzaa. And whatever other holidays happen in December. *looks at calendar* I think I got them all.

And Happy New Year, too! Got some resolutions you want to divulge so all of Kittendom can stare at you during 2005 waiting for you to follow through on them? Come on, we want to know!

So, what's everyone doing for the holidays this year? What are you getting? What are you giving? What are you eating?

Got any weird holiday rituals that you do that make other people scratch their heads?

Do you love the holidays and start getting itchy to put up a tree the day after Halloween? Do you despise the holidays and even this thread is making you clench your jaws in frustration, despair, or rage?

Want to share some fond old holiday memories? Best one ever? Worst? Best and worst presents? Favorite songs?

Do you celebrate Hanukkah, Yule/Solstice, Kwanzaa or nothing at all and do you feel invisible with all the Christmas stuff going on in late December? Or do you do Christmas anyway, but on a purely secular level? Do you wonder where the Ramadan thread was? (I didn't see one, either.)

Is Christmas too commercial? Does it need more Jesus, less Santa?

Have I asked about a billion too many questions and made your eyes glaze over?

Sorry.

I guess I should answer a few.

I'm pretty bah-humbug about the holidays. I don't decorate, don't wrap presents, don't fa-la-la-la-la. It's kind of sad. I wish I did. So I generally find the holidays somewhat depressing, because it's supposed to be sooooo festive and wonderful and heartwarming. Hallmarky. I do think the decorations, especially the lights, are pretty enough, sure, but sometimes they just poke at my heart and remind me how unfestive I personally feel about it all. And I'm not religious, so none of the religious aspects of any of these holidays appeals to me.

Presents: I'm getting some good presents, for sure. The Carnivàle DVDs, some books and CDs and stuff. (I will wait patiently for Gloria Trevi's CD to arrive and Rock. My. World.)

Favorite holiday memories: One that comes to mind is the time the cat ate all the tinsel off the bottom half of the tree. It was a merry Christmas in the litter box that year.

About New Year's: I wouldn't make any real resolutions, because I figure I wouldn't keep them and then I'd just be disappointed in myself and I don't need the stress of that, nope. It is a good time, though, I think, to reflect on the previous year and do some deep thinking about what worked and what didn't and perhaps consider some changes. I'll do that for sure. But I'm always doing that.

I wish everyone the best, peace and good will and all that.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, KITTENS!

I love Christmas! I love all the pretty lights and decorations, how my mum claims that she doesn't like Christmas but i still come home to find the house looking like Santa's groto-we should charge. I love putting the tree up, having it be cold outside whilst your lovely and warm inside, buying loadsa cool presents for people and seeing their faces when they open them. Obviously i enjoy getting the presents too, i get all chuffed with the shinny paper! I love going out with my mates Christmas Eve and getting unbelieveably festive and drunk and sick-think we're planning on going out as the nativity scene, you know, a star, mary, joesph, angels...........i think someone came up with that brilliant idea after a couple of tots, and knowing us, it'll happen. I love seeing more of my family and friends and even waking up Christmas Day with a dodgy head and sick-y stomach, it's all good fun!

I think i'm getting a DVD system with speaker and stuff, which is very cool, i've always said i'd get one but never got round to it. I might be getting some new trainers too, which are always good, then just the usuall stuff, you know, like perfume, toiletries, money, chocolate........mmmmmm.

It's my neices second Christmas but the first one that she'll really understand, she was too young before. I'm really looking forward to having her spend Christmas with us and seeing how happy she gets with her presents, she's obsessed with Noody, and she has loadsa Noody stuff.

My mum's a wicked cook so i always look forward to her cooking......yummy. Think we're having turkey and beef, cos some people don't like the big bird.

One Christmas tradition me and my mates have always done is secret santa. We all pick scrapes of paper with names on and buy that person a present, then on Christmas Day we go to someone's house, consume silly amounts of alcohol and hand over the presents. Always a good time. If i remember correctly, last year i was trying to dance with the tree, obviously didn't go quite as planned and i fell over bring the tree and all its little pretty decorations with me. All you couls see were my hands and feet-hehehe-took me a while to get out!

So there you go, that's some of the reasons why i love Christmas so much, i'm sure there's loads more, but i think that'll do.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

Christmas... ahh, Christmas.

I like Christmas well enough, but I don't go exactly ecstatic over it.

What I hate is that it is too commercial. I'm not exactly religious, but is it necessary for all the stores to go Christmas mad the second the clock hits November? Ok, sure, they need to do that to make money out of it, but, that's my point. That's ALL it's become. It's nothing but a money making scheme. Come the 1st of December, fair enough, for tis the season, and all. But NOVEMBER?!

I'm not a Scrooge. I buy presents, take way too much time and precision in wrapping them (but I like them looking all pretty!), then I give them out (which is when all my time and effort goes out the window because they're unwrapped in a matter of seconds... or minutes, depends how much tape I've used) and all that.

I believe that Christmas is for kids. I think that's what's wrong with Christmas - too many people have stopped believing in Santa. And I know that's pretty much deviating from the whole religious aspect of it, but, like I've said, I'm not exactly religious.

I also believe that family and friends are a huge part of Christmas. My family is kinda... split up... Last year I spent Christmas with my dad... and that was, how we say... crap. But yeah. This year, I'm travelling 800 miles North to spend it with my brtoher and his wife. Next year I should be spending it with my sister. It's always me that does the travelling though. Ugh.

Last year, my friends and I tried the Secret Santa thing. Worked for everyone else, but I didn't get a present, so... hmm...

Getting kinda stressed with presents this year. I've had a tonne of time to shop, and I've shopped, but can't find anything, and can't find anything to suit my budget. I hate that it's so expensive. And WHY is it expensive? Oh, I do believe it's down to the commercialism of it all.

My Christmas traditions... 2 things that I can't go without on Christmas day - my Dandy/Beano annuals, which I recieve every year, and own every single one since 1992 in good condition... and a tub of marshmallows. I might not even eat the marshmallows, but they've GOTTA be there.

Completely random things, but Christmas morning, I come down the stairs in my dressing gown and my fluffy Santa Hat... I hafta have my marshmallows and annuals.

Past 2 years Santa didn't have Mince Pies or Sherry. Didn't like that. And poor Rudolph went without a carrot. It's just not right.

Anyways, that all pretty much sums up my Christmas... without the HUGE dinner, the alcohol consumption, and all the other things that pretty much go without saying.

All's I've left to say is...

~NEVER STOP BELIEVING~

Merry whatever ya'll celebrate to everyone! Have a good one!

As a kid I loved Christmas, pretty tree, pretty lights, very pretty presents under the tree and my mother would make a fabulous dinner for my older brothers and sister and their kids. Happy times. There was never a religious aspect to Christmas in my house and if there is a religious aspect to it in the rest of my country it is not in your face, you have to bother to look or find it. At least I am not noticing it, which is fine by me. To each his own. I don´t mind the commercial aspect, I think the window dressings look nice and no one can make me buy anything if I don´t want to. The only thing I do not like are the incessant Christmas songs and my freaking annoying colleague whistling fucking Christmas tunes yesterday whilst I was trying to work, but I digress.

Nowadays I do not put up a tree, too much work, too little space in my living room for it. I do not specifically celebrate it, but I still like the time of the year. Houses and the city streets are decorated with pretty Christmas tree lights, I have put up candles up all around the living room (but they are not just for the holidays and stay all through winter). I keep forgetting what Boxing Day is, is that the day before or after Christmas? In any case the day after Christmas is a holiday here as well, but unfortunately this year both days are in the weekend, so I don´t get any extra free days.

As for no Ramadan thread, there was none, not even a mention in a daily thread as I can recall. I don´t think we have any Muslim kitties, if we do, I hope they will post here and start one next year and tell us something about it. I may be an atheist, but I am interested in learning about religions other than christianity. Anyway...

Happy Holidays!!

You were beaten to this thread AmberSecretAdmirer, but I hope we´ll all be here the same time next year to post and maybe you´ll win then. ;)

It´s almost 2005, it really is true that the years go by faster the older you get. Of course one year is a huge part of your life when you are like 5, but once you hit 33, oy. On the upside, if a year sucks ass it gets replaced by a brand new -and hopefully great- one much quicker. :p

Ah Christmas in Australia as a Jew! What could be better!?

My family used to make a thing of it and go to the zoo, one of the only places not overly populated by people with Christmas baskets and crackers and ham loafs and all the other goodies one consumes on such a day.

The mood is high with Christmas cheer as most people just seem to forget that it is a holiday celebrating Jesus's Bday instead of one that brings people of all religions together in song. (I've actually got that explanation from someone). Everywhere you go you get wished Merry Christmas, on flights, at plays, in movies and at work. "Everyone needs some Christmas cheer!"

Anywho, I hold no hard feelings and my girlfriend and I even threw a commercial side of Christmas party a few weeks ago. It was fun with the whole shebang and we had our Chanukah stocking hanging from the windows.

I just like holidays full stop. The family time, the food, the presents and the good cheer (for the most part!)

So yes, you Christmas people, have a merry one. Chanukah ones, hope it was fab and Solstice, may it be a good one! (or if it's been (pardon my ignorance) may it have been a good one.)

If I missed any, forgive me, have a great one!

Xmas

Postby Tibbs » Wed Dec 22, 2004 1:16 am

I usually LOVE this time of year. Living in New York there is so much to see. The decorations at Macy's and the huge tree in Manhattan are two of my Fav's. Along with presents and being with my fam, it's usually so much fun.

This year though, my family got hit with a lot of losses, so it's not going to be the festive affair it normally is. We are still doing dinner and gift exchanging, but I can't seem to look forward to it like I normally would. I think because I know it's going to be very different then past years. It's the first time in my life, that I won't see the same people gathered at my house for the holiday's and well...that just really blows. I'd rather have everyone there, than any present I could get, ya know.

I wish all the kitten's and there loved ones the happiest of holiday's.

Merry christmas

&

A happy new year

To all kittens

Well I like christmas, but it seems to have gotten tackier as i have gotten older. or maybe it has always been tacky and the christmas magic has just worn off. I agree with many of you about christmas being to comercial. I'm not even a christian, I'm a buddhist. My mom owns 2 very succesful thai restaurants and every christmas makes them ever so tacky. I dont understand it. All the shops are the same, there are shops near where i live that have had christmas decorations in them since august!!!

K as i sed b4 im not a christian so the religious side of it doesnt really apply to me. However in my book christmas is a family time and well i think this christmas for me is gonna be kinda sad. It will be the second christmas without my step dad, one of my aunties wont be there, My grandma wont be there. I also know that for a lot of my friends its gonna be hard, One of my friends is gonna be spending her first christmas without her mom and her dad because her dad is still fighting in iraq and her mom recently died of cancer.

I think this christmas will make me think a lot about family and how much they mean to us. Besides that My christmas is gonna be good cause my moms not cooking(woo hoo dont tell her i sed that), I didnt step on any glass baubles this year, Im gettin season 6 buffy(lots of w/t moments:willow:tara) and a gamecube. Also i have a new friend and maybe even my first g/f.

anyways

I hope you have a very merry christmas and a happy new year

Love ya Kitties

Ah yes! Tis the season to deck all those halls and have a holly jolly one.

Christmas came just after halloween in the stores around here. I agree with the earlier complaints about commercialization and the lack of religion in it all, but that seems to happen all year round, so why start now.

I'm not a big fan of winter. I like the decorations but am way to lazy to put them up outside. We put up a real mutilated tree, but that happens just the week before the 25th because they've been butchered some time in early november. By the time I put it in the stand it's so dry it sucks the water bowl up and still the needles are in heaps all over the floor. But you can't beat the smell of real pine!

We mini celebrate Chanukah, as our resident jews have returned to Australia, we light candles and fry some stuff in oil. We sang the dreidle song and ate the chocolates. Can't beat that.

I'm meditating and thanking the goddess for protecting me from death this year. I can't burn incense because my son is horribly allergic. I figure if I smudge and think happy thoughts I honor that part of myself.

Candles seem to touch an aspect of every faith so I light those as much as possible.

And for that part of me that still believes in Santa, I hang a stocking and put out the funny plate with cookies. The milk is lactose free though, which I know some Santas need. :wink

So there you go. I hope whatever holiday you celebrate you at least light one candle. I think it's a healthy thing to do.

Happy Holidays!

Scrooge was better than his word. He did it all, and infinitely more… He became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew.. and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!

XMAS SURVIVAL

Postby Lil Miss Kitten » Sat Dec 25, 2004 3:16 am

I live down under and around the corner...Middle Earth to be exact...so we're a wee bit ahead (time-wise only) of the rest of the world. Xmas day has just been and gone for me and I now get to sit back in my new Pyjamas and relax! The next big thing is trying to digest the several huge meals I engulfed today!

What did Santa bring this year? SANTA BROUGHT JACK....in fact Santa was too fat and lazy to turn up to my house this year so I had to rely on the goodness of friends for some decent presents! Thankfully they pulled through and I didn't go without this year :)

Hope everyone enjoys their day and please remember that it doesn't matter how many tacky gifts you get, it doesn't matter that you eat so much that your fly keeps falling down and just WILL NOT stay up, it doesn't matter that your uncle keeps patting you on the ass and calling you "sweetheart" (ewww), it doesn't matter that your dad gets so drunk he keeps forgetting your mums name and hugging her sister, it doesn't matter that the dog eats so much in leftovers that she vomits on the lounge floor, it doesn't matter that your grandma gets confused by all the people and calls you "Steve" even when your name's "Julie", and it certainly doesn't matter that theres nowhere to escape from the drones of extended family tramping through your home...except your bedroom, where you find pubescent cousin Kyle sniffing your underwear.

No, none of this matters.....as long as you are all together :luv2 Its the time of the year to forget how much these people irritate the hell outta you and try your best to look like your happy (even if you aren't). Avoid confrontation :rage , take all the hugs and kisses you can get :kiss2 :kiss1 and treat your family as kindly as you can....cos it might be the last time that your all together :paranoid

Who knows........you may just find you enjoy yourself! :party

..............then again......probably not :yawn

Much love to all of you this Xmas!

Well, I live in Maryland on the Eastern Coast of the US. Christmas is very commercialized per usual, but still fun.

My family (mom, dad, and myself) usually do a small Christmas celebration at my house. On Christmas Eve, we usually have some kind of seafood dish. Last year, we had a seafood pasta with shrimp and imitation crab meat with a creamy sauce. This year, my mom made Crab Imperial, baked potato, and coleslaw. We then open a few of the presents Christmas Eve, and do the rest Christmas morning.

For Christmas dinner, my mom cooks a turkey, coleslaw, mashed potatos, corn, cranberry sauce (can-shaped... :D ), homemade gravy, and bread stuffing. She only cooked this meal one other day of the year (Thanksgiving), so it's something that I look forward to.

Presents:

I got the be-all and end-all present for the Willow/Aly fan this year (well, aside from meeting Aly...). I got one of the shirts that Aly wore on the show. It is the red tank top from the episode "Smashed" when she scans the computer for the stolen diamond and also talks to Amy about going to the Bronze. I am sooo happy with it. Methinks that was an understatement seeing as I've been walking around the house with it non-stop.

:willow

Aside from the Willow screen worn shirt, I also received Buffy Season 1 DVD set, Newlyweds DVD set, Harry Potter 3 DVD, portfolio (Art Major), a couple of CDs, and some other things.

I hope that all the Kittens have had peaceful and restful Holidays.

Surviving Christmas while working retail, hmmmm.... Did I this year or not? The jury is still out on that one and I have to rely on others' opinions since I'm too tired to think, too tired to do much at all actually.

My celebration has been quiet and low key: I've had my first day off work in over 10 days, I've slept in, I've puttered around the house, I've made a trifle for the one day "delayed" family (Darcy's) Christmas celebration. It's now evening on Christmas Day and I'm going to wrap presents for the ones who really matter: the two delightfully horrible little girls who are Darcy's brother's step-kids which I think makes them my nieces sort of. They're 3 and 7 which is just about perfect for Christmas and tearing up paper. Everyone else is getting gift bags.

I'll miss tomorrow's get-together and meal since I'll be at the store again doing that post-holiday Christmas sale thing... but I'll be able to get there for dessert. Should be fun if I survive finishing up the sale set up.

I'll be travelling home to WV to celebrate with my family 7-13 Jan. It'll be great to see my mom and dad again. Can't wait.

Happy Holidays everyone. :wave

Happy Holidays everyone!!!!

It's boxing day here in Australia right now, time to finally relax. Thankfully Christmas day was cooler this year, we even had a little rain. Better then the swelter we had last year.

I hope all the kittens are safe and happy this festive season. Make of it what you will, really good cheer is in your hands. Enjoy! You'll find it's contagious.
