Why is it a so VERY COLD Monday, MKF? Winter 04-05

It isn't quite Monday in my corner of the kittenverse, but right now, the outside temp is 3 degrees Fahrenheit (-16C) with a wind child factor of -8F (-22C)!!!



And the forecasted low for tonight in my part of "the mitten" (aka 'Southern' Michigan) is 0 degrees Fahrenheit.. (-18C)!!!



That's Darn Cold....



And if it's this cold here, what are our Canadian/Canadien kittens getting?? Warduke?? Seurat??



I'm making a hot water bottle for my bed tonight... wearing thermal underwear for pajamas & nice warm socks... and extra blankets!!



So, how cold is it for you right now?? And when it is extra cold where you live, how cold does it get?? what do you do to keep warm?? any hints for those of us experiencing the Deep Freeze?? And what would W/T do to keep warm?? (like I don't already know!! but share anyway!! )

Although we've had colder weather than that skittles, it's actually a lot nicer today than it's been for the past few weeks here. It's 19F/-7C right now.



But, then again, January is coming, and that's the coldest month

It's 22°F right now here. The wind chill is 10°. And the low tonight is supposed to be 17°. It can get pretty cold here in Alabama. I grew up in a little town in the mountains north of here and it gets colder up there. Lot more snow, too. I think the coldest I've experienced up there was -14°F. I have many memories of having to work really hard to get into the car, since the doors were frozen shut. And it was often in vain, because it wouldn't start anyway. Bleh.



I think we all know what Willow and Tara would do to keep warm. sigh

Well here in New York it got down to -10 F last night and was -8F when I went into work this morning. Way too cold! Thankfully it seems that this will only last one day and it should warm up into the 20's by tomorrow! Heat Wave

A couple of weeks ago, we had a cold snap here in southern California, and it went down into the upper thirties in my neighborhood. When my house was built 80-something years ago, no one thought to properly insulate it. So, even with the heater on, I was freezing my butt off. Thanks to a t-shirt, sweatshirt, sweatpants, and two snuggling cats, I got through the night. I don't know if I could handle living in a colder climate. It's not just the temperature: I drive a lot for business, and I can't imagine dealing with snow on top of Los Angeles-area traffic.



My hat is off to everyone who has to deal with real winters. Stay warm. cold-climate kittens.

Here in Toronto it as a balmy -16 c. Which translates to farenheit as uh...really,really cold. But yesterday was even worse, the wind was blowing hard and creating the dreaded wind chill. My tactic for dealing with the cold yesterday was to only venture out once for a few minutes. Today I have to actually do things, but apart from fingers getting painfully cold (maybe I should switch to mittens instead of gloves) it wasn't too bad. It is supposed to get back to a more normal +3 degrees tomorrow.

Skittles, I envy you. It has been so long since we had a decent winter here that I am starting to wonder whether I´ve imagined ever walking on water. It has been a few degrees below 0 Celsius for a few days now but it will heat back up to 9 degrees in a couple of days. Which I am hoping for just this once as I have forgotten to -eh- close off my outside watertap. It will go kaput if it starts freezing too much. After I have done that, may winter come and stay until summer and I want snow, tons of it.

Well, the overnight low in my area was -3F!! The wind chill was around -15F during the day.



It is now UP to 16F (-9C) with a wind chill of 1F (-17C)



and let me say how bitterly cold it was!!



Not to mention that the school where I was working today didn't have adequate HEAT!!! As the students arrived to the classroom, I told them to go to their lockers & get their coats... and tell the others to bring their's, too!! I hated it... the kids are all excited for the holidays & then they can't get warm!!



I get mad at students who don't dress warmly enough for school, then the school lowers the temperature even more! Even I can't dress warmly enough for this weather!!



Tomorrow, it is supposed to get UP to 36F, so I'm looking forward to it... except that it is supposed to rain/sleet.



G, I don't think you'd like this cold weather. There's no snow on the ground, the wind is sharp & biting AND although I have a wonderful set of hat, scarf & gloves, my nose gets cold!!! I would run around to keep warm, but there are patches of ice around & I don't like falling down....



But if we get some snow, I'll send you some.... ok?

It’s Michigan and it’s December, so I guess the cold is to be expected and something you just get used to, eh? At least tomorrow it will officially be the winter solstice, so it is now acceptable and proper to have miserable, cold, crappy weather. When I was out walking last night, it was so cold I thought my eyeballs were gong to freeze in their sockets! I’d still rather have the cold than the snow though; at least you don’t have to shovel cold.

Greetings from the sunny and cool south! Today the high was 37 F and a 20 degree wind chill. Not exactly good weather to play golf in, according to me. My hat is off to all the Northern kittens. I am not a big fan of the cold. When it is between 80 and 90, I'm loving life.



To stay warm, I just wear flannel everything and have a two dog night.

Here in south Jersey near that City of Brotherly Love it was a bright, sunny, frigid 10F when I walked to the train. Supposedly we also had "ineffective sunshine" which is an interesting phrase. Methinks they mean that it wasn't very warming rather than it shed little light. Since my store is below street level in central Philly I never see the sun anyway. It was cold though with the trains pushing the air in ahead of them. The heating plant in the mall just couldn't keep up.

Has anyone else experienced this? I was checking the temperature on my thermostat, and I know that I've kept it just as warm as it was a day or two earlier (before the latest cold snap---the same one is skittles is in).



. . . yet my feet are cold!!!



It's like they're hooked directly to my outside thermometer: they know it's colder, even if the inside temp registers the same.

True about the insulation, or lack of it, GG. You'd think the woman who built my house, being a Birmingham native, would have known better. Or, maybe she thought that she wouldn't possibly need a tight house in southern California. (To which I look up to Heaven and say through chattering teeth, "Au contraire, Miz Frieda.") But I do feel like a compete wuss complaining about 30-something degrees F while reading this thread and seeing the [to an LA-native] unimaginably cold temperatures Northern kittens are experiencing.

Ms Checkmate, cabin fever can be (partially) controlled by visits to the kittenboard.



but, seriously, I still go out when it is this cold, but not as often & I plan my trips to minimize the outdoor exposures.



I use the phone & computer to keep in touch with the outside world.



I try to exercise.



I read a lot.



Cleaning & organizing inside the house will make me go totally insane & that's the best place for me to be when I'm forced to stay inside.



Does that help at all?? Maybe some other kittens will offer their remedies.



BTW, today was a lot warmer... it actually went above freezing.... but Christmas Eve has been forecasted as being colder than it was on Sunday night.... hope Santa has some anti-freeze on his sleigh.... and anti-antler-freeze, too.

Here in Memphis, it's a lovely 18 with a wind chill of 5. So that just means that all the snow and ice that came down all day and night yesterday isn't going anywhere, I guess I'll be stuck at home again today.

By some quirk, -40 degrees is the same, whether in Celsius or Fahrenheit measurement. In other words, plastic gets real brittle, metal acts strangely, the foam in car seats is hard, and what little crime there is here goes way down.

Dude, that is some serious cold. I´ve never experienced that. So far global warming only seems to affect Dutch winters. Joy is ours.

It's a balmy 4 degrees above F here in Minnesota, but I know what you mean about cold changing everything, Dave.



When temperature reach -30 to -40 below, the air is squeezed of all moisture and settles like ice crystals around all open surfaces. Metal can never be touched by skin, or you'll leave some behind. Throwing a boiling cup of water into the air, and the liquid will freeze and evaporate before hitting the ground (try it, it's really cool!). Snow below your feet crunches loudly, like you're in Antarctica. Leaving exposed portions of skin is dangerous, due to exposure - frostbite is a real concern in times like this. Safety becomes paramount in your mind, because people die in weather like this. What makes me happiest about such forbidding conditions are the people - if someone is stranded in their car or walking without enough covering, folks will help out all they can. Cold weather folks are an unusual breed - silent, taciturn and sometimes cold in dealing with others, we still shine when the need is great.



My rant is done, and I have convinced none in the warmer states of the charms in the north. Still, north states pride themselves in progressive thought with pragmatic efficiency. So what if its cold? At least its WAY cheaper than the coasts.

Y'know, TC, while I miss the coasts---my Northern California hometown, the Paradise of Oregon, the unmatched excitement (and romance) of the Big Apple---I have to admit, a Midwestern winter is a bracing experience. Not to be missed.
