Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I have women in my family that have survived and I have already scheduled my mammogram. I'm over 35 and I've been getting one every year since the age of 30.



Please do self exams and check with your doctor. I know my company will pay the full expense of an exam and during the month of October, most doctors don't require insurance to cover it. Please be safe and if you are over the age of 35, schedule a mammography soon.

Melissa Etheridge Has Cancer, Cancels Tour



Singer Melissa Etheridge has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has canceled upcoming tour dates to undergo treatment, according to her publicist.



Etheridge, 43, will undergo surgery and her doctor expects a "speedy and complete recovery," publicist Marcel Pariseau said in a statement.



The cancer was detected early and Etheridge has been receiving treatment, Pariseau said Thursday.



"I am fortunate to be under a wonderful doctor's care and thankful that this was caught early," Etheridge said in the statement. "I am looking forward to a quick and full recovery."



Etheridge and actress Tammy Lynn Michaels held a commitment ceremony in September 2003. The musician, who lives in Los Angeles, shares custody of a daughter and son with former partner Julie Cypher, who had the children through artificial insemination using a sperm donation from rocker David Crosby.



Etheridge's latest album, "Lucky," was released in February. Refunds for tickets to her upcoming shows will be available where they were bought; the entertainer's Web site says she had been scheduled to play 11 dates in seven cities this month.

Xita, you are so right about the higher risk for lesbians.

We have a group in my city that I am proud to be a volunteer for, the Atlanta Lesbian Cancer Initiative. They do a lot of good things at a grass roots level. Sometimes it can be as simple as giving someone a ride to an appointment. There are a lot of fundraiser functions, hopefully a lot more cities will embrace this idea!

I don't trust any of these studies as I don't believe the medical industry keeps good records on lesbians. I also don't think lesbians go to the gynecologist as much as they should. Essentially, I think we've been understudied. And that breast cancer should be touted as the biggest health concern for all women, and that includes lesbians.

I did some research on tamoxifen back a bit when I was working at the U of I medical center.



I'll see what I can dig up. But tamoxifen is good stuff. Really makes a big difference.

Xita I agree with you that lesbians don't seem to go to the Gyno as much as they should, in my case I did go and while its taken them nearly 6 months to make a diagnosis I feel confident that it opened a few of my Dr's eyes not to mention a few of my fellow lesbians eyes. In this case I feel a little better that perhaps my problems in the last year will help other women from a smaller and often overlooked group get better care.



Here is an example of the kind of attitudes we as lesbians can be subjected to. While in a consultation with my PCP the subject came up of lesbians and how there is not a lot of info on certain diseases for this group. My Dr informed me when she was in medical school in San Francisco and asked the teachers about the effects on lesbians the response was "don't worry about that, lesbians don’t get sick". To her and I it was an unacceptable answer.



I credit my Dr. and the continuing support (and often slight nudging) of my GF and family to see this through by getting a definitive answer.



If I can offer advice to any women it is this, get in to see the Dr. no matter what. If you are not happy with the answer they give you, find another Dr.

Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists in choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable.

When a friend of mine found a lump under her arm she asked what I thought about it so I explained how to do a breast exam and said if the lump didn’t go away in a few days to see a doctor. Well.. the lump went away and was forgotten. At that time she was in her early twenties and extremely physically fit. Many years later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctor recommended a mastectomy and as a preventative measure: having both breasts removed. I don’t know that I would have chosen that particular course of treatment but she had the surgery followed by chemo and, thankfully, recovered beautifully. I will always wonder; if she had went to the doctor that first time, even though it appeared everything was fine, would the cancer have been discovered in time to save her from such a traumatic and life altering operation?



As Kittens have already stated: It’s so important that everyone learn the warnings signs of breast cancer, have regular check-ups, conduct monthly self exams and not fool around with this. If you find a lump under your arm or on your breast -please do not hesitate- go to the doctor immediately. Take care..

There are different schools of thought regarding breast exams, some say do them in the shower and others encourage them in front of the mirror. I would say just do something, sometimes it is your girlfiend that finds something amiss. Most important is do not ignore it if you or a friend find something, sometimes we are in denial and think if we do nothing it will go away. So I encourage those monthly, daily, breast exams!!!

Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things!

There is not enough 'awareness' out there when it comes to cancer. I think we should all be a little more careful about our bodies and always go for check ups. You never know when something can sneak up on you.



Be good, be safe. Take care of your self - if only for someone you love.

Hello Everyone,



I had my appointment yesterday and I got a clean bill of health. I had a bit of a scare last year with a small cyst and they had me wait for my results this time. So there was no sweating it out for too long. I will continue to do self exams and keeping a close eye on things.

Awareness of Breast cancer is very important. My mum's breast cancer was caught very early and treated but it has still turned into terminal bone and liver cancer which is eating her up all the time and she really hasn't much time left. I had a mammogram at 35 and will have one every year. This disease is killer so anything you can do to protect yourself please do. It is easy to believe it won't happen to you but if you saw the pain and suffering my mum has been through you would go your appointments and get checked up

On a random note, In my school tomorrow we're having a 'mufti day' basically where all the years that wear uniform don't wear it in the name of charity. Tomorrow, its for Breast Cancer research. The school roughly makes about £1000 or something to that extent...depending on how much people donate to not wear uniform. Also, everone has to wear pink or donate more to support it more.

Unfortunatly, I don't own pink or like it much but I'm still all for charity so if we can donate (being the last year in the school and not having to donate if we don't want to) I will.

I work for Casual Corner Group and the company has pledged to match donations made in our stores up to $550,000 dollars. My store in Allen, Texas has already raised over $1000 dollars through customer and employee donations.

I think breast cancer awareness is an issue we have to deal daily, so maybe this threat should have a different title.

Charity fundraiser for Breast Cancer

First of all, ALL profits from this PEZ Dispenser will be going directly to charity. - Yes, ALL! The only money that won't go towards charity will be the actual expenses for these PEZ - including PEZ, boxes, postage, etc.



A few months ago, I personally worked with PEZ to do something to raise money for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. I had PEZ do 5000+ for me, so these are fairly limited. Initially, I was going to do only 2500, but I wanted to try to keep the price lower.



My wife was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1998, and after surgery, Chemotherapy, and Radiation, all has been well since! In honor of her fight, I will be donating all profits from this PEZ to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in October of 2005 at the New Jersey Race For The Cure.



With 5000+ dispensers, I am hoping to raise approximately $50,000 for the charity. At the Race in Princeton, New Jersey, I will be presenting them with a "Big Check".



Price for this dispenser is as follows -



1 for $13 - shipped

2 for $25 - shipped

12 for $145 - shipped

24(Full Box) for $285 - shipped



This should be an exclusive from myself, and there will be a set price until all of the dispensers I have are gone. - I will be at a few conventions this year, but prices will be the same. - I've estimated that I will have close to $10 per PEZ to go towards charity.
