Re: Fantasia!

Postby maudmac » Tue May 25, 2004 7:32 pm

Ooooh, not just four hours to vote, but three numbers to use. Much better. Seems to be a lot clearer. Still a lot of busy signals, though. I was tickled to hear Fantasia's voice when I got through.

Didn't it seem like Diana knows Fantasia nailed it? She just had that look on her face, sort of a defeated-but-trying-to-smile look? :(

And Fantasia definitely did nail it. Damn. I think she knows it, too.

It'll be a travesty if Fantasia doesn't win this thing, as far as I'm concerned. But there is no doubt in my mind that she's going to have a good career either way.

Go Fantasia! :heart

Diana!!

Postby Jennpurr » Tue May 25, 2004 8:18 pm

I don't care that Diana had one little slip up in her song. Our favorite top singers do it all the time. She kicked ass tonight, as far as I'm concerned. She got my votes. From my own phone line and from the other one in the house. I'll be very upset if she doesn't win this thing.

Don't get my wrong. I love Fantasia. She has a wonderful career ahead of her, just as I think Diana does if she doesn't win tomorrow night. I think Fantasia should have sang a different song besides, Summer Time. She's sang that song three times now and she knows the judges love it. I just think that wasn't fair. She sings that song really well, but... it was too safe and she knew it.

Now, before anyone jumps all over me... remember, that's just my own personal opinion. I know some of you probably don't even care about that.

Anyway...

I'll buy Diana's album when it comes out, as I will Fantasia's... in a heart beat. :heart

Can't wait till tomorrow night.

Diana, Diana, Diana, Diana....

:love

Diana?

Postby ivygort » Tue May 25, 2004 8:38 pm

I forgot the finals were on tonight so I didn't see the first two songs. I haven;t heard Summertime yet so I hopes she puts it on her first record--I love the song!

I have to say that I was disappointed in Fantasia's final song so I'm torn on who to vote for . . . the local hometown girl Fantasia or Diana . . . .

Re: Diana?

Postby Kieli » Wed May 26, 2004 6:48 am

MHO? Diana's voice isn't "developed" enough for me. As a musician myself, my observation of her performances is that they lacked depth and strength (she could scream really well but not really belt out her songs with power from her diaphragm so that her notes don't bottom out like they have been), something that she will acquire with maturity and lots of singing lessons.

By the same token, Fantasia's performance didn't do much for me up until the very last song. She so rocked on the last one (and having a kickass gospel choir to back her up might have helped too ;) )

Overall? I think they both tried WAY too hard to impress and it was quite obvious by the fluctuations in their voice (and their really pitiful attempts at vocal gymnastics) that they were both very nervous. It's understandable; the pressure was freakin' enormous!

But I personally don't think Diana deserves to win, mostly because she just isn't talented enough. She's good for a teenager but not good enough to carry a whole CD by herself or be up there with the likes of Kelly Clarkson (oh man that woman's voice wows me!) or even Tamyra Gray (who I am happy to say might actually be better than many of her peers in deciding to take up songwriting to enhance her skills).

She's young, she's cute but she's not quite an American Idol yet. Given time, she might be. But I don't think she's another Christina Aguilera (or even another Britney). Those girls had skills at a young age but they also had power, maturity and the good gift of voice lessons throughout most of their careers. Never underestimate the power of a good voice teacher.

Time flies by when the Devil drives.
It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end.

We won't get to see the show and results until tomorrow night, and I've been forbidden to sneak a look at who won before that. As someone who prefers to be spoiled (easier to prepare for nasty things imo) this is going to be tough.

I really hope it'll be Fantasia.

Well... I'm pissed, yet... extremely happy for Fantasia. She deserves it. I hope Diana will get something out of this experience. She deserves it too.

I hope the Top 12 are coming to Texas and I can go.

You know, I knew I missed Jennifer and La Toya, but I didn't realize how much until I heard them sing. :sob

And wheeeew... Kelly and Clay and Kelly... :heart Could have done without, Ruben though.

Anyway...

Here's to Fantasia. May she have a wonderful road ahead of her, as well as Diana. They were so sweet! :heart They made me cry too. Damn emotions...

Fantasia is far more talented than Diana. IMO

Diana needs to develop her vocals more. She can have a great career as well if she keeps working hard.

And...

Diana Degarmo to release her first single...

'Idol' runner-up to release first single

Diana DeGarmo's new song to hit stores on June 22

Updated: 2:41 p.m. ET June 02, 2004

NEW YORK - Diana DeGarmo came in second place on “American Idol,” but she already has plans to release a single.

DeGarmo’s first song is scheduled to come out June 22 through RCA Records, according to the record company’s Web site.

The bubbly 16-year-old from Snellville, Ga., was the runner-up last week on the Fox TV singing competition. “Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino topped her by just 1.3 million votes out of more than 65 million votes cast.

Barrino, a 19-year-old from High Point, N.C., is working on her first single, which is due out June 15. She and DeGarmo both performed the song, titled “I Believe,” during last week’s finale.

Coming in second isn’t so bad, though — last season’s runner-up, Clay Aiken, went on to sell more than 2 million copies of his debut disc and enjoys just as much fame as the winner, Ruben Studdard.

Both singers and the other 10 “Idol” finalists will go on tour starting July 14 in Salt Lake City.

:bounce

I'm sooooo happy!!!!

FOX Expands 'Idol' Age Range and Schedules Auditions

By Daniel Fienberg

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Calling all future Fantasias and Clays and William Hungs: Vocal hopefuls have less than a month to practice their vibratos and falsettos because "American Idol" is almost ready to begin auditions for the show's fourth installment.

Although the next "American Idol" won't hit FOX's schedule until January, the first open call will be held in Cleveland on Wednesday, Aug. 4. The line begins forming at Cleveland Browns Stadium beginning after 6 a.m. on Aug. 3.

In an effort to mix up the show's talent pool, "American Idol" is skipping regular audition cities like New York and Los Angeles. Instead, scouts will head to Washington, D.C. (Aug. 18), Orlando (Aug. 26), New Orleans (Aug. 31) and Las Vegas (Sept. 12). After last year's wildly successful Hawaii auditions, "Idol" will head to the differently exotic climes of Anchorage, Alaska on Sept. 28 before making a return engagement in San Francisco on Oct. 5. The recruiters are also planning a trip to St. Louis on a yet-to-be-determined date.

The "Idol" lines could be even longer this season, because the show has expanded its upper age restriction to 28, rather than 25. Although Judge Simon Cowell spent much of the season carping on the immaturity of some of the contestants, FOX Entertainment President Gail Berman maintains that there was no consideration to raising the minimum age to 18. She cites 16-year-old runner-up Diana DeGarmo as proof that some younger singers belong on the show.

"I don't know that I would necessarily agree with some of the other young folks that got through, but I think that in her case it was an example of a young woman who had the capability to make it all the way up to the semifinals or the finals," Berman says.

Another thing that won't change is the "Idol" voting system. At various points during this past season, surprising twists and turns in the competition led to accusations that the process was prone to racism and classism and that the results were invalidated by faulty technology and all varieties of manipulation by power dialers. Berman insists that "Idol" voting is sound.

"The phone system is probably the most sophisticated phone system ever put together in this country," she crows. "It allows for the most participation that we could figure out how to do in a household. ... I've heard so many suggestions from people and what we keep coming back to is the notion that if you really want to get through, you can."

Berman scoffs at the idea that persistent and dedicated fans were ever incapable of getting through in the long run, suggesting that most voter frustration is caused by human error in the dialing process. She notes that even if there are occasionally flaws and voters are periodically annoyed, the results speak for themselves.

"What we found was, in every particular case, the finale of 'American Idol,' for us, we thought the winner was the right winner," Berman says.

Agreed Xita, maybe that blonde milky bar kid. The one Cowell stated that was as latin as a polar bear! Nothing personal, but I would like to see one of the guys go. Oh, or else that Scott person, he annoyed me in the part of the show where they had to work as a team. I haven't forgiven him for not being a team player. Can you tell I hold grudges? ;)
