I'm sure that wedding dress stuff has been down somewhere! I just wish it were Gab instead of... Crustacea?

Ooh I love those girls! Is it slightly obsessive or insane that it makes me happy to know that their modern-day clones are running around somewhere ? The next question is: Do I care?

There's something about modern day Xena and Gabs that just doesnt work...I need my historically unaccurate Mycenaean heroines in their proper historically unaccurate time period

I think its the lack of very short leather skirts and skimpy little tops. T-shirts and jeans? Nah :P

Apropos of degeneracy, I came upon this scan recently (yeah, GG: hard at work on the final dissertation revisions, eh? :p ). The webmistress titled it "Lucy looking cute as hell!" and it's hard to argue w/ that description ;) (nice sentiment too).

There are just some shows that should never die (unlike some that should!) and Xena is definitely one of those.

I'm doing my best by annoying the hell out of my flatmates with Xena marathons on the weekends - there's nothing like curling up with nutbread and watching a few eppys back to back...okay, exchanging nutbread with skittles would be more realistic but still...

And the Xena cons are still going on right? I wonder if they'll last as long as the ST ones...

but suffice to say, I dont think people will forget this show for a while.

Sounds like a good idea!! but will the nutbread survive the mail service between the Midwestern US & New Zealand?? I could freeze it, so it wouldn't arrive moldy(mouldy). Also, do our respective countries allow the exchange of fresh baked foods??

But, how about if we just exchange nutbread recipes?? or, I have a great Apple Sauce Cake recipe that requires no frosting... just eating it plain!! What kind of recipe do want to exchange that for??

Mention of bloopers brings to mind my own personal favorite:

Xena is characteristically dressing down a villain by saying "That's not the only trick I have up my sleeve". LL then proceeds to look at her habitually bare arms and declares with a perfectly straight face to the camera--

"But I don't have any sleeves!":lol :lmao

And I'll admit to enjoying Smack My Bitch Up. ;)

Nutbread. Do I win a prize if I say that I actually made nutbread for the finale? Well, I did. Yes, I'm crazy! No henbane though. Or any other herbal additives!

"Gladiators" is definitely in my Top 3 (it might be my absolute fave---just depends what's in my head at any particular moment. I'm awfully fond of Jodie Leak's "Beautiful"---song by Amy Grant and Vince Gill, not Christina A.---also housed, thankfully, at the dependable AUSXIP. Luv ya MaryD!)

In the blooper department (well, not a blooper so much as an outtake), that one of Lucy & Renee singing "Deep in the Heart of Texas" while in their full Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Bacchae make-up is pretty damn hilarious! :lol

Najara

Postby MaClayMagic » Sat May 08, 2004 4:44 pm

Has anyone else spotted that a certain jin following crusader called Najara is now leading lady Lily Rush in "Cold Case"?

I loved it when Xena got so very jealous of how Najara adored Gabrielle and Gabrielle left Xena to go 'do good' with this lady instead.

I never recognised Kathryn Morris until I saw it on a "Cold Case" web site! Cool!

Lists! We got Lists!

Postby Gatito Grande » Mon May 10, 2004 1:34 am

Say it loud, I'm consecutive posting and proud (this is the kind of lil' treat one gives oneself after having completed a doctorate :grin )

First off: my very first published piece on XWP (that is to say on Whoosh! www.whoosh.org) was written write right after S2 (Summer '97, when I became a Hardcore Nutball), and proceeded to re-sequence the episodes, in order to improve narrative coherence (So you see, this has been a concern of mine for a long time. And the chutzpah: I hadn't even seen some of the episodes that I re-ordered! :p )

Shortly thereafter, several folks asked me if I would do the same to S3. Well, eventually, I wanna do the whole series (plus relevant Herc eps, and X & G's backstories as well), but as for now . . . S3? No way! S3 is still too much of a mess for me to easily figure out a decent ep order. S4 on the other hand, is a different story (as it were).

So here's my proposed S4 resequence. Now, I'm not looking for whether y'all like it or not (my justifications will come later---probably over on Whoosh!). I only want to know if I've missed something, such that the eps can't come in the order I've listed: for example, if an ep in my sequence references/shows a clip from a later ep: that's a No-No. I also have to keep G's hair and outfits straight as I can---more or less (straight in a gay way that is! ;) ). Here goes:

1) Adventures in the Sin Trade I

2) Adventures in the Sin Trade II

3) A Family Affair

4) In Sickness and in Hell

5) A Good Day

6) The Key to the Kingdom

7) Crusader

8) Past Imperfect

9) Locked Up and Tied Down

10)A Tale of Two Muses

11)Daughter of Pomira

12)If the Shoe Fits

13)Paradise Found

14)Devi

15)Between the Lines

16)Deja Vu All Over Again

17)The Way

18)The Play's the Thing

19)The Convert

20)Takes One to Know One

21)End Game

22)Ides of March

*Just a quick comment: as you may have noticed, I've broken up the India Arc by injecting Deja Vu. However, as DVAOA is set in the present (um, actually 1999), from a strictly chronological POV, it really can go anywhere (I mainly want to take it out of the "Finale" position, which should really be reserved for Ides. Plus, reincarnation is introduced in BTL, so following it w/ Deja makes a certain kind of sense).

Any chronological/fashion/Major Plot Point slip-ups you can see in the above order? When S4 comes out on DVD next month, you---who can afford it, unlike me---can watch it as is (the "canon" ), or try it out ala, um, "The (GG) Way!"

Moving on . . . .

GG's Top 40!

(of XWP Music Videos, that is)

This is a listing just of the songs & musical artists, and not (All Praise to) the videographers (or their sites)---w/ a couple of exceptions. I will provide those upon request (I hope). Well, actually, as you will see, I get more and more talkative about the videos the higher in the count they are. (Can't help it: just love 'em! ;) )

All of the videos are majorly maintext-y---that is, they focus upon the X&G relationship---unless otherwise stated (none of 'em are really anti-subtext/maintext, they may just have a different focus).

*NB: as I've said before on this thread, while I hate what it did to Our Grrlz, I nevertheless love FIN. Ergo, probably most of these videos include a scene or two from FIN, and some, a whole lot of it. My musical tastes run to, in the main, either sad&sappy, or happy&sappy (and a surprisingly large amount of country music, beware! Was a complete shock to me. :p )

Countin' em down!

40. Beautiful Stranger - Madonna

39. Enough of Me - Melissa Etheridge

38. In My Life - Bette Midler

37. Heaven Can Wait - Meatloaf

36. We are One - Westlife

35. Every Day is a Winding Road - Sheryl Crow

34. Stay - Shakespear's Sister (the When Fates Collide version)

33. There You'll Be - Faith Hill

32. Allies - Heart

31. Queen of My Heart - Westlife

30. Causing a Commotion - Madonna (on the Love/Hate between Xena and Callisto)

29. By Heart - Laura Creamer

28. Cantara - Dead Can Dance (this vid is a Salute to Amazons, in the several varieties we saw in XWP)

27. Now and Forever - Carole King

26. Here with Me - Dido

25. Blurry - Puddle of Mudd (this one focuses on the mother-daughter bond between Xena and Eve/Livia)

24. My Best Friend - Queen

23. Precious - Annie Lennox (focused on the Cutie-Pie who is S1 Gabby!)

22. Forever May Not Be Long Enough - Live

21. I'm with You - Avril Lavigne (all about the Norse trilogy, mainly ROTV)

20. Wherever You Will Go - The Calling (there are a couple of versions of this. This one's by Jody Leak, aka "warriorprincessnerd": just about my favorite videographer. There are several more videos by her on up . . .)

19. Everything - Lifehouse

18. Do What You Have to Do - Sarah MacLachlan

17. Bring Me to Life - Evanescence (also by JL: focuses on X's relationships w/ M'lila, Lao Ma, and finally Gabrielle)

16. Eternity - Robbie Williams

15. The Different - Melissa Etheridge (sort of a paean to X's seductive danger)

14. Kyrie - Mr. Mister (tracking G's evolution)

13. We Belong - Pat Benatar

12. Sexy Daddy - Destiny's Child (a catchy, dance re-cap of Who's Gurkhan? Some of the lyrics in this song are blech-y, but it's so much fun that I tune them out. For our purposes, the "sexy daddy" here is Xena!)

11. My Immortal - Evanescence (my most recent download, and it's great . . . though sad :sob )

10. I Could Not Ask for More - Edwin McCain (the oldest video on the list, by far. It only includes scenes to early S4---when it was made, c. late 98---but w/ a song this wonderful, and all that early subtext, who cares?)

9. I Hope You Dance - Leeann Womack (I can't believe I love a song this twangily country, but it's terrific anyway ;) )

8. Say Goodbye- S Club 7 (Ack---and here's some embarrassing bubblegum! I just can't help it: this is a wonderfully poignant song, w/ a superb arrangement)

7. I Would've Loved You Anyway - Trisha Yearwood (I better stop making excuses about the country music: this is not even the last TY song on my list! This video holds the distinction of being the one I first downloaded, when re-discovering XWP music videos about a year and a half ago. It was the desire to save this one---which I'd previously lost to lightning damage---and others like it, that sent me on my downloading/burning binge. :heart )

6. She's in Fashion - Suede (My highest "non-subtext/maintext-focused" video. A delightfully well-produced and fun video dedicated to the gorgeousness that is LL, in all her many XWP guises. All videographers should have as sure a hand in their editing as Cathy O'Grady)

5. Colour Blind - Darius (And now, let's give props---covered in drool :drool ---to the Supreme Goddess of Thud :thud herself, ROC! A video made by my across-the-pond buddy Masque, it's also very maintext-y too)

4. Second Chance - Trisha Yearwood (As threatened. ;) Didja know I have even more XWP vids to TY songs, not in the Top 40? She's like a Major Fave of videographers, and I can't blame 'em: Trisha Rules! :grin This video is my personal favorite of several which essentially "undo" FIN. Let's hear it for Happy Endings!)

3. Touched - V.A.S.T. (I've loved this song since I first heard it in the second episode of that soon-to-be-dead show by :joss . . . and I didn't even know what it was then. Another awesome Jody Leak video, as is . . .

2. Beautiful - Amy Grant & Vince Gill (this song is just provokes :sob and :happycry at the same time, as it provides the emotional chorus to the Love Story which is Xena&Gabrielle. Sorry, must go listen to it again now . . . :sob :happycry )

1. Gladiators -music from the motion picture "Gladiator" (By DJWP, an awesome bard in her own, um, write. This is what to show people, who have either never heard of, or dismiss, XWP. In under 10 minutes, it recaps the entire series so beautifully---to this gorgeous music---that it takes your breath away. Bravissima DJWP . . . not to mention LL, ROC, and everybody else who brought us this Show of Shows!!! :applause )

And there you have it: Your Top 40 XWP Music Videos, America! (Um, I mean Kittens: I grew up listening to Casey Kasem, dontcha know ;) )

[Other videographers I want to mention by name---who provide several above---are Morgaine, T4 Productions, Jane Smith (at "warriors-soul"), Aiglon, Lethe's River, pearlheart and Talaran. Along w/ Masque, DJWP and Jody Leak/warriorprincessnerd: these provide the lion's share. But there are a few one-offs, like LJ (who did "I Would've Loved You Anyway"), Cathy O'Grady ("She's in Fashion) and the creators of, respectively, "Sexy Daddy" and "My Immortal." To them and all those I can't remember off the top of my head, Thank You! These videographers are geniuses who create outta sheer love of their art---and XWP, natch! Gracias and bravissima! :bow ]

GG Thank the gods I'm writing about XWP, and not my dissertation anymore. Yay! :banana Out

*Oh, one more thing: there is a wide variety in the visual---and in some cases, audio---quality of these videos. I wish they all looked as beautiful as the best of 'em---like those of my friend Masque---but they don't. Some have tiny pictures (like those by pearlheart: inc. "Heaven Can Wait," "Allies," and "My Best Friend" above), or badly pixilated pictures (I can't remember which ones are the worst above. I think Jane Smith has some of those problems, in "We Are One" and "Say Goodbye." But she's not the only one). I can only hope that some of these vidders will redo their otherwise-great videos w/ better equipment (e.g. starting w/ their original video captures. Masque gets all of hers directly off the DVD, and that's the way to go. Of course, it helps her that all 6 seasons of XWP are already out on DVD in the UK!)

In terms of video format: hmmm, it's really a mixed bag. Real Player can have the best picture, but unfortunately it does not include an audio equalizer (unlike Quicktime and Windows Media). Some Windows Media vids are really good, others are crappy---then again, some Real Player vids have crappy visual quality, too (while RP doesn't have an equalizer, all the worst audio I've heard have been in Windows: go figure!). (Quicktime seems fairly obsolete, to me, but that's what "Gladiators" is in, and in the largest download version---which took me about 4 hours on my dial-up!---it's pretty good. Not as crisp as Real Player though)

If Real Player just added an equalizer, it would hands-down be the best . . .

Oh, and last but not least: the vast majority of the songs above, I was completely unfamilar with prior to seeing the videos (some of 'em, I truthfully had never even heard of the artists). This process (i.e. downloading binge) has been a wonderful opportunity for Old Fart GG :rolleyes to hear some young whipper-snapper music I might otherwise have missed (to say nothing of all that country, against which I was formerly prejudiced! :p ). Once again, thanks to these great videographers, for prompting me to stretch my, um, ears! :dumbo

Ahh Kathryn Morris. :thud I found that she does bitch rather well too. She can be found starring as an evil wife in a BMW short film called "The Hostage" Her most evil line from the movie? She leans over her dying husband after he just tried to kill himself and says, "It was just sex. You should have let it go at that. You should know that I was always the butterfly and you were always the moth. Now it is time for you to embrace the flame." She was so cold I felt frostbite.

Xena, Warrior Princess

Postby concrete » Sat May 29, 2004 6:13 am

Ok; I’m pretty new to the whole Xena-verse – I sort of (re)discovered it a few months ago and am catching up quite nicely. I am enjoying the X/G relationship immensely and my DVD’s are playing in repeat-mode as often as possible. In all honesty, the whole redeeming / guilt-trip /deeper meaning etc.etc. is of little interest to me. Try as I may though, I cannot figure out why she was a princess. I mean; she was the daughter of an innkeeper. How did she ever obtain this title? It cannot be her Amazone-connection I think. I have searched in quite a few websites but cannot find an/the answer. It has been nagging me and am loosing sleep over it. I simply must know!!! Most people here seem to be very knowledgeable so I’m appealing to you. Anyone? Thank you!

[Kittens check their watches: how many seconds till GG pipes up?]

Hey concrete---

"Princess" was an honorary title, apparently originally bestowed by Lao Ma ("You will be my Warrior Princess," S3's The Debt, Part Two. Borias was present, so he could have repeated it to others.).

However, those admiring/fearing/lusting after Xena must have taken to the honoriffic pretty readily, because soon everybody was saying it (although I guess not so well known that Hercules would inquire of Iolaus "You say you met a woman named 'Xena'? Tall, black hair, blue eyes, opens an Industrial Strength Can o' WhupAss? You sure that's not the Warrior Princess?" ;) HTLJ, The Warrior Princess).

While Xena always seemed sort of embarrassed by the title ("Let's not make a big deal of it." "Some people call me that." or my fave, Pompey: "Why do they call you the Warrior Princess?" Xena: "Because 'Caesar' was taken." ), she didn't seem to outright reject it after her redemption---unlike, say, "Destroyer of Nations"!

S4 DVD goodies

Postby Gatito Grande » Thu Jun 10, 2004 11:40 pm

Oh look, it's GG posting on the XWP thread---will wonders never cease!

Damn. Here I am worrying about trying to pay the electric bill, when what I want to be doing w/ my non-existent money is buying a DVD player and the latest (among all) Xena DVD release. For those who aren't flat broke, here are some temptations (from a review on AUSXIP) :

Quote:
A Good Day

Nice to see the complete versions of the two main Xena/Gab chats from "A Good Day," an episode that I love that you never seem to hear mentioned a lot. What can I say, I'm a sucker for Steve Sears' historical eps. The nighttime scene where Xena and Gab are looking out at the Roman camps

helps sell Gab's ability to lead the army much better than the final cut. The end also makes a little more sense, clearing up Gab's javelin throw and what exactly happened. Xena's response of "I can't answer that question" always seemed a little weird to me. Something just seemed a little off. And now I see that it was actually the response to a different question of Gab's that was cut. Good to know I wasn't crazy. And funny enough, this also shows where that blooper of Lucy's stomach rumbling comes from. I could never quite figure out what episode that was from, but those lines are here in the deleted footage. Huh.

Locked Up and Tied Down

"Locked Up and Tied Down" - if you thought there was Gab/Thalassa subtext before, wait'll you see this! Gab giving Thalassa a face-to-face facial and neck massage with Thalassa laying it on pretty thick! I don't think there's any question of Thalassa's feelings for Gab after watching this.

It's official: add Thalassa to Najara and Brunhilda on the "Forget Tall, Dark and Deadly and let me be your gf, Gabrielle!" list. :p

And one "if only":

Quote:
And, sadly, Rob tells of a great blooper from "Paradise Found" that was never printed. It's at the end where they're back in the cave and Gab is naked, hiding behind Xena. Well, Renee's supposedly there in pasties and a bikini (when you're done enjoying that mental image, please continue reading) [GG: Oooooh yeah! :eyebrow ], and at one point during the scene, Lucy just up and walked away, leaving Renee a little exposed. Renee, of course, shrieked and tried to cover her near nakedness, and the crew burst out laughing. Rob asked Renee if it'd be ok to print it for the gag reel (where they would of course blur things out a bit), but LUCY put her foot down and forbade him from doing that. Makes you wonder what other great gags happened that we'll never get to see :(
