Fingersmith Movie

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, so please move if anyone has. But they've casted the parts of Maud(Elaine Cassidy) and Sue(Sally Hawkins). Couldn't find much in the way of pics for either actress but Elaine was in the Nicole Kidman film "The Others" she was the young mute housekeeper.Sally Hawkins actually had a part in "Tipping the Velvet".



P.S. Dr.G-According to IMBD filming on Fingersmith has already but it won't be released until sometime in 2005.

That is cool. I liked "The Others" so it will interesting to see her talk.



I just read Fingersmith. It was good. Struck me as different-yet-similar to TTV. I am looking forward to seeing the new movie.

Well this is a different movie, so it can have it´s own thread. I have not read the book, when will the movie be shot/come out? Maybe I´ll have time to read the book first, but then that might spoil the movie for me if there is too little time in between.

My suggestion, Garfield? Read the book. Seriously, it still will be far and away better than the screen adaptation. The television adaptaion of Tipping the Velvet disappointed me to no end. The book was so much more entertaining and had more depth than what was portrayed on-screen.

I would expect as much Kieli, that is why I probably should not read the book first. I enjoyed watching TTT, but when I read the book this year and became very annoyed with most of the changes they made for the TV series.

yeah there were some weird changes.



But I tend to look at the two (book and TV) as being two seperate and only tangentially related. Different ways of telling the same story.



I enjoyed both. I'll probably like the Fingersmith TV-movie as well.

I really enjoyed the book so it will be interesting to see how they adapt it into a film. I tend to be fairly relaxed about changes made to books in the process of adaptation - after all, they're going to have to leave something out unless they want the film to be 15 hours long - so if it's true to the spirit of the book, I'll be happy.

Also, Sally Hawkins is in 'Vera Drake', which is just about to be released here in the US.

Pro bono, which I think means,'Sucker Who Doesn't Get Paid' in Latin.

The new issue of The Radio Times has a feature on Fingersmith and also said that the DVD will be out on April 11.

Many thanks for the links Hyo Shin. For those of you yet to see Fingersmith, a sensual feast awaits!!! It was absolutely fantastic! This had a very different feel to Tipping the Velvet, much darker, quite the gothic Victorian melodrama. I also felt it was far more faithful to the original text than TtV.A considerable feat considering the length of the book. The truly amazing Imelda Staunton was wonderful as Mrs Sucksby, and as for Elaine Cassidy and Sally Hawkins, aka Maud and Sue Elaine Cassidy in particular is certainly "one to watch out for".

Dosen`t look like anybody`s looked at this particular thread for awhile. I`m sure that`ll change once Fingersmith is shown in countries other than the UK. Anyone know where I can find any info, links etc on Elaine Cassidy? I`ve managed to track down a couple of movies she`s appeared in, "Disco Pigs", and "Felicia`s Journey", and I am totally besotted!

I watched the DVD this weekend. At first I thought it had been edited but its still 3 hours long, two 90 minute episodes rather than three 60 minute episodes, the first ending at the moment. Sarah Waters really enjoys torturing her heroines doesn't she?

I liked the short documentary but wish they had included an interview with Sarah or a commentary track.

Finally got to watch my copy of Fingersmith today. I've been looking forward to it. I've read all of Sarah Waters' books, and really loved Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith. Affinity was a little too out there for me...still beautifully written (Sarah has a wonderful grasp of the language), but not really my cup of tea.

I think they did a nice job adapting Fingersmith for the screen. I liked the dual perspectives. It was essential to see events from both points of view.

Sally Hawkins impressed me in TtV, and she didn't disappoint here. I really loved her portrayal of Sue. I thought it was dead on.

And, personally, I think Imelda Staunton is one of the true acting goddesses. But that's me.

I got theis movie for my birthday...I will say it was good...greatly atmospheric, good performances...but I think I would have liked it a lot more had I not read the book beforehand...there is so much left out...when I saw Tipping the Velvet, I had not yet read the book and I loved the video...then I read the book afterward, which I love in a different way...I guess what I'm saying is I wish I had done the same with Fingersmith, seen the movie first, then I would have had no specific expectations and not have felt cheated by parts I wish had been left in, ya know what I mean?

Yeah, I know what you mean, Sandi. I think it probably helped me that I haven't read the book in well over a year. And I've read QUITE a few other books/stories since then. So all the details from the book are not clear in my mind. In fact, seeing the movie makes me want to read the book again.
