For X-mas, I got the special edition of "Memento" with the psyche test menu system. I saw this movie on video a while ago but the DVD rocks. This movie was just as good the second time around even knowing how it goes. The DVD has an alternate chronological edit which is also great and provides an alternate view point on the film. It has Guy Pierce who was also in "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" (another great flick, you can have transgender and gay people who don't die, who'd a thunk) and Carrie Anne Moss of "Matrix Fame". Worth a look if you want to see some innovative film work IMHO.

Memento

Postby Cicca » Fri Jan 09, 2004 1:51 am

I agree about Memento. Great film.

Did you manage to get the chronological version to work? Mine would only play one scene over and over.

Cicca: Memento makes you think. I had some problem with 2 scenes skipping on the chronlogical edit. I ended up checking the chapter headings to skip back when it missed a scene. Check the play side of the DVD for scratches. It could be a defective DVD or a problem with your player. Try it on another DVD playerlike a friend's or one on you computer. The performances are more interesting in some ways in the chronlogical edit.

There are basically three movies I have seen at least 27 times and never get sick of.

One: Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. I am told again and again how similar Heather Moony (played my Janeane Garofalo) and I are. I really don't know why, but this movie has captivated my sister and I for ages. Well, the past 4 years, anyway.

Two: Bridget Jones's Diary. Yet again, another movie my sister and I got hooked on together. I just die over the humor. I can be such a blonde some times. Bridget is just so clumsy and frumpy. She's easy to relate to, I guess.

Three: Silence of the Lambs! Yay! I first purchased this movie to oogle over Jodie Foster... hehe... But later realized that it has a plot! And a pretty cool one, at that.

So there they are. Quite the mix, eh?

Calendar Girls

Postby Puff » Tue Jan 13, 2004 1:45 pm

Well if you can find a movie theater in the US that is showing it then Calendar Girls is a wonderful movie. The story is about women from the WI (women's institute) that wanted to raise money, so the posed naked on a calendar. It is a true story and it is hysterical...the whole theater laughed.

Well worth the admission price.

So, the day started and I knew my name and had my pants on. So far, so good. Yay.

Calendar Girls looks like it should be pretty fun. Helen Mirren and Julie Walters! How could that go wrong?

And thanks for the advice about Memento. Mine was a rental so I sort of lost patience with it and ran out of time. I bet it's fascinating to watch the chronological version. I'll have to rent it again some time.

Pulp Fiction would have to be a favorite of mine, big fan of Quintin Tarantino

Resivior Dogs Once again Tarantine, made one of the best indie films ever.

The Godfather Copola made in my opinion the best movie ever with this gem

Apocolyspe Now Copola again, with the best war movie ever this time, watch the original Redux just sucks

The Toxic Avenger Hey it maybe one of the stupidist too, but I love Troma movies, and Toxie is jut great

Calendar Girls

Postby concrete » Mon Jan 26, 2004 8:42 am

I'm gonna shamelessly copy this message from another thread because, come to think of it, this is a more appropriate place and I really loved this movie so here goes again:

I saw the movie “Calendar Girls” last Saturday. May I be so bold as to recommend this movie to just about everyone? Then I shall do so: I hereby recommend this movie to everyone. I haven’t laughed out so loud during a movie since I don’t know when; it was so hilarious. And moving at times as well without being mushy. All the right ingredients for a perfect feel-really-good-movie and the actresses are all superb and superbly cast; they really had the cream of the crop of British actresses there. And any movie with Hellen Mirren (oh, her poor on-screen son..... :laugh ) is a potential winner in my books! An absolute must-see.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious. ...

Postby KiwiAlcyone » Sat Feb 07, 2004 7:41 pm

I have so many favourite movies, I once tried to put them all in order but it didn't work at all so here's the best of the best according to Alcy:

The LOTR trilogy: What can I say, Peter Jackson is a genius, the acting is superb, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom are hot, hot, hot and the scenery is breathtaking...just where did they film these movies again? ;)

The Star Wars Trilogy: For sheer, stupid fun, the catchy music and the cute fuzzy ewoks I loved when I was five.

About a Boy - For Hugh Grant's new hair cut making him look all studly, and it's just damn funny. "I am an island! I am bloody Ibiza!"

Breakfast at Tiffanys - For Audrey. Even though the role of Holly Golightly was always supposed to go to Marilyn Monroe, I can't imagine anyone else but Audrey in this role...when she sings 'Moon River' it always makes me cry.

Tomb Raider - :drool Need I say more? Well, I will say more, the dialouge is crap but Angie is Lara Croft in all her buxom, tight arse-hugging shorts glory.

Donnie Darko - It's original, fantastic, sheer genius and the soundtrack rocks. Couldnt understand it the first time I saw it...god bless audio commentary on DVDs!

That's just a few of 'em, what can I say? I love movies! :party

Wow!

I never knew that about Marilyn!

I suspect she'd have done quite well with it, but c'mon! Audrey!! Gotta have Audrey.

Wow. What a completely different vibe it would've had.

I just watched Dick, with Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams for the first time in a while. I have to say its a pretty decent movie. Not too good with the plot, acting or anything else for that matter, but some parts made me laughhhh...

So, I liked it. :)

Re: I loved this movie

Postby Gatito Grande » Thu Feb 26, 2004 12:52 am

Speaking of Audrey, and much-loved movies, the 40th Anniversary of My Fair Lady DVD is just coming out. I heard a review of it yesterday on NPR, and they included unused recordings of Audrey singing for herself (instead of the dubbed Marni Nixon). It really is too bad that Audrey didn't sing her own part (as she wanted to). Her own voice was much more expressive.

GG Of course, many will believe that the real tragedy was that Julie Andrews didn't get to reprise the role *she* created! (She just had to make do w/ getting the Oscar---for Mary Poppins---that year instead) Out

Re: I loved this movie

Postby Cicca » Thu Feb 26, 2004 1:22 am

As much as I love Audrey Hepburn, I still wish we could've had Julie Andrews in the part.

I agree about Audrey's voice being expressive. Her version of Moon River is the only one that exists for me. :P So wonderful.

So yeah, Breakfast At Tiffany's. So great. And one of the best parties in a movie EVER!

I loved Iron Jawed Angels, it's a movie about the suffrage movement in the 1900's. The film is by Katja von Garnier, and has Hilary Swank and Julia Ormand in it. It's currently playing on HBO, so if you're able to get it, I would recommend watching it.
