Calling All Eliza Fans! "Tru Calling"

Postby Gatito Grande » Fri Sep 19, 2003 9:41 pm

So here's the very own thread for my personally most-anticipated new show, ED's Tru Calling. While I'd welcome spoilers, I'll leave it to the mods to decide about that (or whether there should be two threads).

GG But All Eliza Love All the Time is a given! :thud Out

. . . just from the promo ads: so Tru saves the life of "Rebecca" (as portrayed by the legendary Lust Goddess Hudson Leick)? I'd really love her to show the appropriate gratitude . . . "leick" say, horizontally? :devilish (I can dream, can't I?) Today the subtext, tomorrow . . . ! :p

GG, great thread. I am looking forward to this show so much. I wish Eliza the best success! I posted some code for spoilers on the first thread of the forum. Let me repaste.

About spoilers, you can use this code for now:

Amazing spoilers revealed before your eyes.

[ link=spoiler] spoilers[ /link]

And as far as a spoiler thread, I certainly hope the show sticks around and it becomes a really popular thread here and then we can have 2 threads sure! Till then, let's respect people's wishes and either use the code or leave space! thanks for making the thread!

Yeah I am looking forward to seeing ED as anything besides Faith as well. She has some acting muscle, it is good for her to flex it. And let's face it, Faith became a cartoon.

Here is a really good looking Tru Calling site I found.

www.trucalling-fans.com

I have to say she is looking really good in a lot of these promo pics.

Let's hope the network gives it a fair shake.

ETA: I do know that local shock jock Mancow has been selling Tru Calling like it is going to be the best thing on TV.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a Faith spinoff...if Tru get's canceled why would ED jump back into another series with a character she played for years. Sounds like it would be a step backwards to me.

TRU has had great coverage in Entertainment Weekly ... full size pics of Eliza and a lengthy article ... it's a little bit of "Early Edition", "Groundhog Day", "Alias", and a few other shows that I can't recall at the moment ... does anyone have that article to help me out?

I believe it also mentioned that we got to see her thong? :thud

Of course, it's being filmed in Vancouver (even spent a day on location just down the street from my house) :grin ... so that's another good thing!

The only negative thing I can think of is the gawd-aweful timeslot it has ... opposite Friends AND Survivor?!?! ... what the frilly heck were they thinking ... and if the ratings don't prove to be stellar, I sure hope they take the stinkslot into account. :rage

Of course, if worse comes to worse and they cancel, I guess there's always a Faith spin-off to fall back on.

Well, something which I think the posters here will enjoy immensely, I've already seen the pilot episode! I personally think it was quite cool.

And, ladies and gents, so can you!

Just go here: www.buffy.nu/article.php3...ticle=1377

Download all the files and then watch under the one at the top (they'll put themselves together).

And obviously, the entire thing is technically a spoiler, so don't watch it if you don't want the spoiling.

GG Musta been thinking "September 30th", not October. I'm seriously tempted to try downloading the pilot, but I don't think my slow connection is up for that sort of thing. It's hard enough for me to get brief clips online. :spin Out

Thanks Melindrax :) , I watched it as I have no idea if and when this show will reach the Netherlands.

I liked it, there are some things I could criticize, but those things can be said about most pilots. You have to set the premise for your show and introduce your main characters and tell a story at the same time. Not easy to do in the space of 40 minutes or so. I think this definitely has potential and I sincerely hope it will be a success. One thing though (this isn't really a spoiler): someone please buy her a car. :p

I saw the pilot too and I have to agree with DrG, someone get the woman some wheels. :eek

... but that being said, looks like Eliza has done some working out for the part and not just for all the running around town but her arms looked a little more defined as well.

- I liked her family interaction

- the b/f seemed to be a bit of a dud

- she's already got an unsuspecting sidekick!

- do I smell the hint of a Tru Calling video game in the works?

I enjoyed the pilot. I wasn't sure what to really expect but I'm pleasantly surprised. It wasn't difficult to follow or understand ... and it may or may not have been the late hour of the viewing, but I didn't anticipate that last little twist near the end.

I too think this show has promise ... I just wonder why it would be put up against Survivor and Friends. How is it supposed to pick up much of a following with that kind of competition? :hmm

Run Eliza Run

Postby Rally » Mon Sep 29, 2003 11:15 am

Saw the pilot a few times, it was pretty good. Listened to the Q&A of the entire cast and creator at San Diego Comic Con. They said they will be toning down the

running thing, they also had some other interesting things to say. They all really positive about the show, too bad Fox has buried it on Thursday nights.

Well officially, of course, I have to say that I have no idea what you're talking about.

its really too bad that it has to be opposite Friends final season and Survivor and has to wait until after the World Series to premere. i don't think Fox will give it much of a chance, which sucks because i like Eliza and the show looks interesting

I'm not stealing, I'm just taking things without paying for them. In what twisted dictionary is that stealing?
Why do we have to resort to non-violence? Couldn't we just kick their asses instead?

Re: Run Eliza Run

Postby WebWarlock » Mon Oct 06, 2003 8:52 am

There might be a method to Fox's maddness here.

I mean there has to be people that are tired of "Friends" and are not interested in "Survivor". Frankly unless I catch one of the first two eps of Survivor, I am not interested.

Granted it is up against the #2 and #9 shows on TV right now. But it doesn't have to be in the top 20, it just has to do well enough for Fox not to cancel it.

It could happen.. I think Friends is more of a challenge than survivor. My friend, who is a big Eliza fan is more of a friends fan, still she plans on taping Tru Calling. I think it can happen, it's just hard for genre shows in general but I am going to cross my fingers for Eliza.

'Tru Calling' Goes Back in Time

By Kate O'Hare

Whether it's post-9/11 jitters or millennial aftershocks, TV producers are fascinated by the ideas of "What if?," "If only ..." and "There but for the grace ... ."

Last season saw a drama -- ABC's "That Was Then" -- and a comedy -- The WB's "Do Over" -- in which thirtyish men were allowed to relive their '80s adolescence.

This year is all about the girls. On Showtime's "Dead Like Me," an 18-year-old (Ellen Muth) becomes a grim reaper, taking souls while trying to reconnect with her troubled family. On CBS' "Joan of Arcadia," a high-schooler (Amber Tamblyn) talks to God, who gives her puzzling missions that have far-reaching effects on her friends and troubled family.

On Fox's upcoming "Wonderfalls" (created by Bryan Fuller, who also created "Dead Like Me";) , an apathetic 20-something (Caroline Dhavernas) gets cryptic messages from talking gift-shop tchotchkes, which cause her to alter the lives of those around her (including friends and troubled family).

There seems to be a theme here.

Now, starting Thursday, Oct. 30, there's FOX's "Tru Calling," starring Eliza Dushku ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer";) . She's not talking to God, as near as we can tell. Instead, she's talking to the dead, or, to be more accurate, the dead are talking to her. They want her help. They want not to be dead. Luckily for them, Tru's just the girl to ask.

After displaying some possibly psychic powers at 12 during the funeral of her mother, who was murdered in front of her, Tru wakes up as a 22-year-old college grad and discovers she has gone back one day in time. She then tries to help her self-destructive brother (Shawn Reaves), coke-sniffing sister (Jessica Collins) and the slain corpse that spoke to her during her first night as a morgue attendant.

Created by Jon Harmon Feldman ("Dawson's Creek," "American Dreams";) , "Tru Calling" posits a situation with massive theological implications (but they don't really go there) and enough time-travel conundrums to give H.G. Wells a tension headache.

According to Feldman and fellow executive producer Dawn Parouse, Tru alone has this power. There was another, but that person is dead. "There's a mythology that backs that up," Parouse says. "It's no mystery that she wound up at that morgue."

"I don't think she chose it," Dushku says, "or if she did, she doesn't know it."

The producers also acknowledge the effect of recent events. "Look," says Feldman, "9/11 is part of the collective consciousness right now of our country. 'If you could do things differently ... .' You can't help but access that in the writing at this subconscious level. Why is the sense of changing things in the air? That's probably a real good reason."

"When you say 9/11," Parouse adds, "I thought it was real important for her to just be your average 22-year-old girl, because everybody did feel that. 'What if I could have done something? If only ... .'"

While 9/11 may be partly responsible for some current shows, the idea of changing history is as old as storytelling, and is a TV staple.

From 1996 to 2000, Kyle Chandler starred in "Early Edition" as a stockbroker given the next day's Chicago Sun-Times so he could change the headlines (a job he inherited, along with a cat, when the previous recipient died).

Even earlier, from 1989 to 1993, "Quantum Leap" starred Scott Bakula as a scientist thrown into the bodies of people at different points in history. He was then stuck there until he "put things right that once went wrong" to the satisfaction of a seemingly omniscient computer, Ziggy.

These shows throw a monkey wrench into the idea of absolute predestination, since someone wants to undo something that's already happened, but wasn't meant to.

Maybe people die that shouldn't have.

"Absolutely," Feldman says.

"Absolutely," Parouse concurs, "and maybe there's someone to right the wrong."

"And if there's someone to right the wrong," Feldman continues, "what we're going to explore in this series is, if there's someone there to prevent death, maybe there's someone there to ensure death. That's something we're going to go through as well."

"And maybe he's going to be a hot 22-year-old guy," Parouse says.

Unfortunately for Tru, she doesn't have the Almighty making cameo appearances, nor talking wax lions, nor a newspaper with constantly shifting headlines, nor Ziggy. She has only her own wits.

"She's not a superhero," Dushku says. "She's going to have triumphs, where she can save people, and she's going to have really painful experiences where she just can't, and she's going to deal with that."

Dushku reportedly passed on a "Buffy" spinoff featuring her character, the rogue slayer Faith, for "Tru Calling," but the concepts are not that far apart. A slayer is a girl chosen -- either randomly or by design -- to save the world from evil. Tru has been chosen to save, not the world, but one life at a time.

Whether or not "Tru Calling" becomes anything like a meaningful metaphor for salvation and redemption, the thought that second chances are possible is seductive.

"In the world we live in now," Feldman says, "there's this level of helplessness that people feel. How can you change things? How can you make it better? How can you prevent all this needless death and destruction?"

"It's just the hope," Parouse says, "that comes with saying, 'Maybe not everyone that dies should be dead.' Wouldn't it be nice if that were true?"

Tonight is the night

Postby WebWarlock » Thu Oct 30, 2003 10:51 am

Well this is the night for ED to cast off the yoke of ME and shine on her own.

Local radio personality/shock jock Mancow Muller has been pimping this show like it is going to be the best thing on TV. Well, he admits that the story might be lame, but he fawning over his love for ED.

The nice thing is Mancow is syndicated all over the place and his audience is the same one that the Nielsen people love.

LOL Well, I must be the only one that actually never watched either Friends or Survivor so I'm happy there is something on to watch. I thought it was pretty good. I like most of the supporting characters and saw potential in a lot of the relationships with Tru. Plus, Eliza running around in jeans and a t-shirt about 1/2 the episode ain't so bad either.

I liked this ep, it kept me guessing, is it that guy, not it's this guy, no it's :sh

A good episode, but sadly, with it's time slot, it will never survive. If it can endure long enough for Fox to wake up from it's drug induced coma, hopefully they'll put it anywhere else except Thursday night.

I'll check it out as often as I can, and that's a major commitment for me. :) The colors were pretty, and I liked the montages - the first and maybe second time. It seemed a lot like they needed a bit more footage. . .

Saw the premiere tonight; I was very impressed, particularly by Eliza's performance. She really can carry a show of her own. I'd say the show has a lot of potential, provided they don't get bogged down in becoming overly dramatic.

The plot wasn't quite as predictable as I would've thought, had enough twists to keep the interest without becoming needlessly convoluded.

Some very imaginative use of camera techniques and flashbacks. Could get repetitive if they're not careful.

Couple quick points, while I'm here.

1) Anyone have a major sense of deja vu from Run, Lola, Run?

2) On a related note, she manages to hoof it across the city, repeatedly, all on foot. Get a car, get a cab...get a skateboard if you must.

Ok, so that was more like one point, broken up into two parts.

All in all, I enjoyed it. Plan on catching it next week, because I'd rather wake up in a bathtub with a kidney missing than watch Friends or Survivor.

I had read the reviews and expected a lot worse. It was pretty good, I enjoyed it. I didn't like her siblings, they can go :p and the boyfriend can go too. Otherwise I think the concept is good and Eliza is good!

Aaaaack! My VCR cut off the first minute or so. Were the credits catchy?

Well, the good thing about the running: being, as I always am, concerned for the health of all my favorite hotties, maybe the running will necessitate ED *not* engaging in a "certain carcenogenic addiction" I heard that she (like waaaaaay too many young actors these days) has? :spin [Not to mention that I worry about her vocal health as well---seen her laryngitis-plagued in several interviews]

But, about the show: it has promise (well, duh, it has Eliza!). It has a good rhythm ("and it's easy to dance to" ), and plenty of potential for drama (w/ her history and family, for starters---then there's that job!). I hope they'll be some lighter moments too, though: this is a grrl I'd like to see out having fun w/ her friends, what w/ the rest of her life! :dance

[However, WTF was w/ the "earlier tonight on Tru Calling": just how short do they think our attention spans are? :confused ]

I hope the show will concentrate a little more on substance over style in succeeding shows (I recognize the importance of style in a pilot). I tru-ly :p believe that ED has the acting chops to do way more than glower and run (and sizzle, of course! :drool )---give her some real scenes, w/ real lines (her fantastic performance in a d*ckhead-made show, the ep Sanctuary, comes to mind).

GG Maybe we'll see Hudson again sometime? (Baby w/ two mommies? There GG goes fantasizing again!) :heart Out
