I liked it a lot too! I missed half, annoyingly, so I didn't get the story for a bit, until I figured it out for myself. It looks really good, and I can't wait for the next installment :-P.



It was very good in the smut stakes for the BBC, indeed! LOL.

I skipped Enterprise tonight... why one hot Vulcan when you have three hot humans?



Sure, the dialogue wasn't the best, and they don't have the biggest FX budget, but I do like what I saw and I appreciated how its roots are in the comics (pay close attention to the psychiatrist, she's more than she seems!).



Granted, I haven't watched much TV lately period, so it's just good to see something I can tolerate, let alone like. But I do still recommend it.

I thought it was great! It was quite arty,lots of sweeping camera angles. The Music Hall scenes were great,love the songs.

The basic gist of episode 1 was that Nan fell in love with Kitty at the music hall. Part of Kitty's act was to throw a rose to a lady in the audience. Eventually Kitty saw Nan and handed her the rose. Then she sends for her to visit her backstage and they get talking. Kitty gives Nan a job as her dresser. They go to London where Nan joins Kitty on the stage. This when they become lovers,the love scenes were well done. Things however don't go well as Nan goes home for a short visit. Her sister disapproves. Nan returns to London only to find Kitty and her Manager Mr. Bliss in the bedroom.

The acting was great.

If that feeling is still bothering you, I'd suggest getting your hands on the DVD and watching the commentary by the stars/writers.

That last scene actually just had me grinning hugely. I thought it was wonderful. Jessica and Helen were not meant to be lovers (Jessica needing a bottle of wine to have sex with Helen might be a clue!) so the close friendship that they had at the end of the movie was just wonderful to see. There's a thread somewhere about the movie and Xita wrote so beautifully about it. Something along the lines of two women loving each other, learning about themselves, and becoming better and/or changed people because of it. And still loving each other at the end. Not "in love", but still loving.

I think it's worth giving another try... The commentary is really interesting and a lot of fun. The dvd also has a lot of deleted scenes on it. Including the one where Helen is at the gay bar. They describe why they cut it (I don't remember the specifics. something along the lines of it seeming like Helen was cheating on Jessica) and I agree with them.

Anyway...

I really enjoyed the movie. It may have helped that I already knew how it ended, who knows?

so what is love then is it dictated or chosen does it sing like the hymns of 1000 years or is it just pop emotion

Well, had to tape it last night so watched it this morning before work! Gotta say I thought it was fab...great story (like we didn't already know that!! ) great costumes/set etc, and the performances were spot on! Wonderful! And Rachel Stirling as Nan was simply stunning! Particularly when she cut her hair! Heh-heh, so I'm shallow, so sue me!



Seriously though, very well done to Auntie Beeb! The love scenes were extremely well done, and the *ahem* under-the-sheet-bit had me gawping at the screen! The two leads certainly had some chemistry going on there!!



All in all, 10 out of 10!! Just can't wait for part two now!!!

So I watched the pilot last night and dug it. It's no Buffy, meaning both that it's not as good as BtVS used to be, and (quite pleasingly) no where near as bad as the show is these days. But I like all three female leads, and really dig getting to see three chicks working together, kicking ass, presuming that Dinah will learn to kick actual ass eventually. Dinah, how cute a name is that? Like the kitty in Alice in Wonderland. But back to the show, some of the camera work was really nice, too. I'm not used to comic book style cinematography, but it's growing on me. There were some parts that I thought were lame, none of them memorable enough to have stuck with me, but overall I enjoyed the ep. It's a relief to have at least one watchable chick-centric fantasy show left on TV. Yay them.



Favorite line of the night, at the end when Helena and Barbara (it is Barbara, isn't it?) were having their lil heart-to-heart:



Barbara: (wistfully reminiscing about her Batgirl days) Besides, you're way cooler than I ever was.

Helena: I know. *smirk*



Heehee.



And the blonde girl is cute! In some moments she reminds me of Alicia Witt. Hubba hubba.

i wasnt going to watch this because i hate periode dramas (most proberley cause my mam forced me to watch non stop catherine cookson when i was younger!) but im really i decided to watch it cause i really enjoyed it, and not just the sex scenes (though i am a 16 year old so they werent unliked!) i cant wait for next week.

As a side note, my secret confession -- I got the above info from, of all things, a lesbian tv/movie yahoo group populated mainly by het boys. It might ick me out more but they are incredibly thorough -- they expend an almost unnatural amount of energy in seeking and reviewing absolutely everything to do with lesbian sex on tv and in movies. And they have clips on usenet (whatever that is) of almost every single lesbian kiss on tv. And let me tell you, those boy numbers were pissed when they killed Tara!

Hanki, I'll volunteer LOL. I agree the music hall songs were really catchy. Love the "I'm rather shy" song. Felt so sorry for Nan at the end of the episode, she was heartbroken.

On the DVD front, I would like to recommend the recently released "Platinum Edition" of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast".



You get three (count 'em, 3!) versions of the film, soundtracks in English and French (this latter very well done, BTW) and loads and loads of extras. Not to be missed.

DrG: Fortunately, not much actual talking goes on beyond "it's so hot", "hot hot hot" and "really hot". The occasional intellectual will chime in with "the plot was confusing." They're rabid about lesbian content though -- 'no mention of boys (joining or otherwise) or penises, please!'

Dr G and famer, thankyou for the review and link!! I've been scouring for something, anything on 'TTV' but it seems everyone's been kinda quite on the subject since it aired!


It's definately very weird seeing the characters played by people compared to what you imagine them as being like.

Excellent review and summary Dr G. I thought this was superbly done. The acting was excellent, I was particularly impressed with Rachel Stirling. The article tyche posted was spot on in that there is no real need for some of the narration as you can clearly see what Nan is thinking due to Rachel Stirling's reactions. Where the narration was used to condense plot it really didn't bother me that much.



I thought some of the metaphors were a little over-done. I think we all got what the oysters were a representation of without having it pointed out to us so many times. Also the fire that appears on the screen just as Nan and Kitty have their first fight that leads into the sex scene. Things are heating up! Do you get it! Thought that was a little much.



But these are really minor petty complaints. And that was honestly all I could come up with as far as things I didn't like go. My main complaint is that it didn't last long enough. As soon as it finished I wanted to see more. Which is always the sign of a good show. I agree with Twisted Rabbit that I thought the book was better. I think however that is because no one's adaptation is ever going to be as good as the way you imagined it in your head. Maybe that's just me though.



Oh, wait, I had another complaint. I didn't like that Andrew Davies had them kiss before the kiss in the coach, which is the first kiss in the book. I thought this somewhat took away from the impact of the build up work he'd done. I like the way that they kiss in the carriage because they just can't hold back anymore. I didn't like that the first kiss in the series was done as a kind of game. He had built it up so well to that point and I think that you could tell through some of Keeley Hawes expressions that she was also in love with Nan. I don't feel you needed that physical representation at that point. And I can't believe I'm complaining at all about women kissing on screen. Someone slap me.



One of my favourite moments was lifted directly from the book and lived up fully to my expectations. The moment when Kitty goes to kiss Nan's hand as she's bidding her farewell and smells the fish on her hand. Rachel Stirling's expression here was priceless.



Kitty: You smell like...



Nan: (mortified) I know, a herring!



Kitty: No, not like a herring. Like a mermaid.



I love this. Just the last line and the look on Kitty's face. And did anyone else think that Kitty's talking voice sounded a lot like Julie Andrews?



The musical numbers were excellent, particularly "I'm Rather Shy". The love scene was very good too, good job by the actors. It was your typical moments of love making cut together into a sequence. And yes, the title act is included in the love making. That was a pleasant surprise.



I can't wait until next week. That was so, so good.



Edited to add - I've read the book so could fully spoil you if you like Dr G. However, according to comments by Keeley Hawes they changed the ending slightly. So my spoilage may not be entirely accurate, but I can't imagine they'll change it that much.

It was a lovely book. Can't wait to see this production of the story, but... hearing that they changed the end makes me nervous for the main character.



I'm in the middle of Fingersmith right now, Sarah Waters' latest. She's just so damn good at describing desire. Those of you who've read TtV, do you think the BBC has done it justice so far?

Honestly, I found Nan's voice really irritating. It sounded...I don't know, too forced, somehow. As though she was clearly imitating an accent, rather than letting it slide naturally through her voice. Anyway, it distracted me.



Almost as much as the hot naked lesbian sex did.
