Re: out on C4

Postby littlesplinters » Thu Apr 10, 2003 12:53 pm

I remember watching Out on 4. They had this really good peice of film about young gays and lesbians, can't remember what it was called but it featured people like Jimi Sommerville, Rose Collis and the Sleeze Sisters. i had it on tape for ages, i seem to remember being quite inspired by it. I think C4 has been really good with lesbian and gay programming, yeah it's often on late, but hey it's there. Plus there are gay and lesbian characers pretty much scattered all over UK TV,

:rofl BD!

I remember doing the same thing w/ "My Two Loves"! (which was mentioned elsewhere recently as compared to the recent Lifetime melodrama "An Unexpected Love")

Oy vey, what we won't do for grrl-love!

xita, I remember briefly glancing at the book "Desert of the Heart" around the time I first saw the movie, but thought IIRC it was substantially different from the movie? (Like, didn't the characters have different names?)

It's kind of striking to me how Kittens on either side of "the pond" have very different memories of when they first saw the lovin' (TV-wise, anyway). I've always thought that all places Europe were more enlightened in this regard than the Puritanical USA, but maybe we're talking different eras as well? On American TV, we got a quick kiss in '91 on LA Law, a somewhat more lingering kiss in ~'95 on DS9 (Dax and her former in "Rejoined")*, and just the odd sweeps-stunt kiss here and there until, well, why we're all here! :willow :love :tara Brit-Kits (and others), how does this compare to your time-line? When exactly did you start seeing these short films you mention?

(BTW, I should have said "primetime TV," as the soaps were a little bit ahead in these matters, I believe. But I'm no expert on daytime TV)

GG When I come into my fortune, I will probably have to get "Desert Hearts" on DVD---as I can see the "rewind-effect" soon taking its toll!:p Out

*About this same time ('95), also coincidentally on a "space station in the future", there was the Talia Winters-Susan Ivanova relationship on Babylon 5. As anyone who saw it will remember, they did not kiss, but series creator J. Michael Strychynski (sp?!) assured viewers after the fact that women had, indeed, slept together . . . the fact here being the essential death of the Winters character!:mad (as is probably mentioned in the cliche faq somewhere I'd guess).

Bluemote,

Yep I liked When Night is Falling a lot - thought the cinematography was stunning and the bit where Petra juggles with light blew me away the first time I saw it. Also have to admit it's kinda sexy after the hangliding accident and massages occur ;)

It was a right pain in the arse to get hold of the VHS tho - had to special order it from MVC few years back when I was still in school and my mum volunteered to go and pick it up for me on her lunch break. When she paid for it she realised it was 'one of those films' :lol A long talk soon followed......... :laugh

On a further note I dug out my old Dyke TV tapes for a laugh and found the sultry suits short film - it's called Double Entente and useless fact No. 1 - apparently it was the first programme aired past midnight on Channel 4 that accumulated a million viewers or something like that. I remember reading it in an article somewhere - Diva perhaps? All for the sex apparently - who would've guessed? :rolleyes

Further Recs...

Postby Big Dummy » Fri Apr 11, 2003 10:25 pm

Yeah, GG, it's amazing what you'll do when your hormones are racing and and you want to get all the info on what's waiting in the wings for you, but you gotta keep one eye out for mom. That movie will always have a special place in my heart for that. Of course, at the same time, the channel was showing The Fox over and over again, and that one left a lasting impression of an entirely different nature.

So Kittens, I've read through every page of this thread, and no one has mentioned the tv miniseries The Women of Brewster Place, based on the novel by Gloria Gaynor. It stands out for me cause it seems to be the only film that deals with African-American lesbians. It was an ensemble deal starring Oprah Winfrey and Jackee Harry (227 anyone?) about the lives and loves and struggles of black women in this tenement called Brewster Place. One set of characters were a lesbian couple, Lorraine and Theresa.

Quote:
Theresa and Lorraine (Paula Kelly and Lonette McKee) decided to reside on Brewster Place because, as lesbians, they were seeking some place where they could live without ridicule and torment. Their relationship, soon discovered by their neighbors, became the backdrop for the drama's finale.

The movie deals quite well with the struggle of these two characters, as Lorraine is very concerned with the opinions of others and is very closeted, whereas Theresa has a sort of "to hell with them all" attitude. The ending is sort've sucky because disaster befalls one of the women, but I don't believe it was played as a cliche or a "that's what you get for chosing the love that dare not speak its name" thing. It's just sort've brutal and real, and dealt with in a very moving way.

Also, and just thought I'd throw this out there, I was really impressed with the lesbian subplot that began on Once and Again. I loved it. There's nothing like First Time experiences like that to make your heart go all mushy. Too bad the show was cancelled. I would have loved to see where that was going.

Postby Gatito Grande » Fri Apr 11, 2003 11:47 pm

Heh, heh: you're wrong, BD, I mentioned The Women of Brewster Place just a couple of posts back in my paean to Desert Hearts (because it also was directed by Donna Deitch). I didn't really discuss it besides calling it "cliche-orific" because of its "tragedy befalls the dykes" angle. However, at least both were alive (if not well) and together at the end.

As far as African-American lesbians in the movies, well, there was that other project Oprah Winfrey was "associated" with---except that the lesbian aspect was barely visible. (I speak of course of the film version of The Color Purple).

GG OK, I'm having a mental block: if Gloria Gaynor wrote "The Women of Brewster Place," who sang "I Will Survive"? :dance Out

OK, I just have to check if I really AM the last one on the planet to see this movie. So, am I? :

I loved it. Looooooooooooved it. If I'd have had a big fat clue in high school and if Clea Duvall had been a classmate... well, high school would've been a lot yummier. Cleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaa.... :grin

How can anyone resist Eddie Cibrian hopping around in tight little cut-offs and slapping his ass? I need to get out more, but that's one of the funniest things I've seen lately.

And then there's Joel. What more to say?

Waitaminute, BD, are you saying that I was right about the Gloria Gaynor thing?! So you're saying that the book is by Gloria Naylor? :confused

Daytime TV to Get First Lesbian Kiss

Postby Ben Varkentine » Mon Apr 14, 2003 3:14 pm

Just found this on the AOL newsfeed and thought kittens would be interested:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Daytime television viewers -- considered to be among America's most conservative audiences -- will see their first on-screen lesbian kiss next week, ABC television said on Monday.

The kiss will take place during the April 22 episode of the Emmy-award winning soap opera "All My Children," making what ABC said would be a first in the world of daytime television.

It comes in a scene featuring gay teen character Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel), who came out as a lesbian in 2000, and her new friend Lena (Olga Sosnovska) who "in a moment of truth and true love ... comes to terms with her feelings."

"All My Children" has tackled a number of controversial topics during its 33 years on the air including AIDS, abortion, drug abuse, racial bias and teenage alcoholism.

"The theme of 'All My Children' from the beginning is the belief that, as God's children, we are all bound to each other by our common humanity despite our many personal differences; that it is our failure to understand and respect those differences that causes most of life's pain and suffering," said the show's creator, Agnes Nixon, in a statement..

"The Bianca story is our latest effort to dramatize that belief," she added.

Ooooh... can't wait to see that scene. Although, I had hoped that Bianca's first on-screen kiss would be with Elizabeth (Maggie), stupid writers. :rolleyes They don't know a good thing when they see it. And hell, even Eden and Elizabeth both said that they would be willing to play out a relationship. Writers should listen to them. :smash

Bend It Like Beckham

I just saw the Eletronic Press Kit of this movie and it looks really funny and interesting.

It's a British film about two teenager girls who want to play football (or soccer for our fellow Americans), but their families are far from happy with it.

More about it:

IMDB

It's out on DVD in Europe and in limited release on American theaters (of course, none of them close to me... :( )

Re: The hours

Postby kukalaka » Mon Apr 21, 2003 9:00 am

I know I'm late, but they have to do all that annoying dubbing before getting US movies into the cinemas here.

I absolutely loved it. I was most impressed by how they managed to make the little boy cute and irritating at the same time. And the way you could perfectly understand why Julianne Moore's character had to leave. I mean, they only had about 1/3 of the movie to achieve that.

I loved the soundtrack.

And, I hadn't really read anything worth mentioning about the movie before seeing it so it was full of surprises. Like "Who's that woman? I thought the one in the present would be Meryl Streep... Oh, there she is. In the bed. With the other one. This is going to be better than I thought..." And the kisses, of course ;)

And, honestly, it was depressing, but I thought the end to be rather encouraging. Even though it had Woolf walking into that river (That has to be one of the worst ways to end one's life, btw.). I don't know, I guess the words made the difference (see sig).

To look life in the face, always to look life in the face, and to know it for what it is, to love it for what it is.

Renee O'Connor in "Rockford Files:Blessing in Disguise

Postby Gatito Grande » Wed Apr 23, 2003 11:26 pm

I know that there are a few Xena fans here, and others like myself who :drool over Renee O'Connor.

The Hallmark Channel is *finally* going to show something I've waited years to see, Renee in "Rockford Files: A Blessing in Disguise." This 1995 made-for-TV movie is supposed to be Renee's very best performance, pre-Xena, and this is the first time I've seen it listed to be shown on cable. (Unlike others like Changes :yawn which are shown every other month!).

Anyway, for those interested, it's being shown at 12AM (Midnite) EDT this Friday 4/25, on the Hallmark Channel (so that may be Thursday night for some of you---I'm not sure if it's repeating).

GG In my own fantasy Dictionary of Anatomy, where "Breasts, Female" are listed, there's a picture of Renee :thud Out

Upcoming Goodies

Postby Big Dummy » Thu Apr 24, 2003 3:29 pm

I don't know if anyone else has heard of this. I'm always a little late on the train, but I was reading about a new series that'll be airing on Showtime January 2004. I know, months away, but I'm excited about it cause it's an ensemble cast a la Queer As Folk, but starring lesbians. It's called The L Word, and has some familiar faces in the cast, like Jennifer Beals (Flashdance), Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), Mia Kirshner (Not Another Teen Movie), and Laurel Holloman, whom I believe was Randy Dean in The Incredibly True Adventures. So yeah, I'm excited.

More info can be found here.

GG, Brewster Place was Gloria Naylor. But then again, you prolly already found that out or knew that.:peace

Jenn, funny you should post that about wanting Maggie and Bianca to get together. I was just reading about a poll the writers did to see what would work best for their fans.

Quote:
Frons says ABC polled 1,500 "AMC" viewers last December to see how Bianca's romantic life should proceed.

"That group, by a wide majority, said, 'It's OK for Bianca to be a lesbian, and for 'AMC' to tell a lesbian love story, but we don't want it to be with Maggie,'" Frons says.

"To be honest, we were shocked."

"Maybe it will turn out we made a mistake," Frons says. "Maybe it will be decided that Maggie has no chemistry with Henry because she is a lesbian and wasn't ready to deal with it."

I haven't followed the show much, but I was surprised to find that there are folks like ABC's Daytime chief Brian Frons who actually try and give the fans what they want.

Edited to add:

Crap! There's already a thread for this show. I suck. Really, I'm retiring my keyboard. :spin

X-Men 2

Postby Boomstick79 » Wed Apr 30, 2003 8:04 pm

Good morning kittens!

Just got in from work having watched X2 and all I can say is - wow! Hell of a lot better than the first one - great action sequences, some interesting plot developments (Singer tries to stay true to the comics but puts his own spin on them it seems :hmm ) Good special effects (Nightcrawler is awesome)and enough little visual gifts to keep geeky comic fans like me happy - Beast in an odd cameo - have to keep your eyes open for that one :grin ) Tra la la la la - I am very happy now and it all seems quite well placed for X3 to kick into action in the future. There's a bit of a sad ending - don't worry no spoilers here - but all will be revealed if you read the comics and pause and ponder - someone is coming back! :grin

Right, it's 3am I guess I'd better bugger off to bed :)

Night all,

~Lou

PS. There's also the added attraction of not only Famke Janssen and Halle Berry in leather but a half-naked Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and the lovely Anna Paquin to feast your eyes upon. And Kelly Hu kicking some serious ass - marvellous! :grin

Yup Alan Cumming was Nightcrawler - he was very good - brought a lot of humanity to Nightcrawler, and a nice sense of humour. And the opening sequence features him with his teleporting (and they use the *bampf* noise from the comics! :grin Ok ok, I know I am sad.....) so make sure if you do watch it, you are in the auditorium on time - opening sequence is very very cool :applause

~Lou

PS. I know Zoe was interested in Matrix Reloaded and I'm guessing other Kittens will be too so here is a bit more info for you all (mainly British, I think the US gets it on 15th May regardless :) - a release came through from Warners saying that the British premiere was on Weds 21st May at 8pm and we would be allowed to show prints from 8:30pm Weds night even though it is not 'officially' released until 23rd May. I don't know if this is just specifically for Warners cinemas or the whole of Britain but it's a good idea to check local listings because licences vary from cinema to cinema :grin Now that is one film that is gonna kick some serious ass! :grin

Alias

Postby sam7777 » Fri May 02, 2003 11:51 am

For all Alias fans, the finale looks like a beaut:

story.news.yahoo.com/news...ay/5124810

Quote:
Wild 'Alias' finale leaves us hanging

Fri May 2, 7:40 AM ET

No show is more faithful to that old show-business bromide than Alias, one of TV's best serials -- and certainly its most breathless. Over the past two seasons, Alias' clever creator, J.J. Abrams, has written his heroine into a dizzying array of inescapable corners, only to pull her out at the last moment and spin her off into some new peril and direction.

Prepare to be spun again, in an unflaggingly entertaining two-hour season finale that once again launches the show into uncharted territory. In true serial fashion, secrets are revealed and mysteries are solved (though not all of either), and old dangers lead to shocking and unanticipated complications.
