Who Star Quits Abruptly

Christopher Eccleston has quit the title role of the BBC's new Doctor Who series after just one episode of the new series aired, the BBC reported. Eccleston, whose first appearance as the ninth Time Lord attracted around 10 million viewers in its premiere on March 26, feared being typecast, the network said.

Talks are taking place to replace him with Casanova star David Tennant.

The surprise news followed earlier reports that the BBC, buoyed by Doctor Who's huge audience, had ordered up a second season after just one episode had hit British airwaves. Russell T. Davies will again write the show, which is produced by BBC Wales.

Billie Piper, who plays Doctor Who's assistant, Rose, is expected to star again.

Eccleston's last appearance is expected to be in a Christmas special. He said that he is planning new projects and that he found filming the series gruelling, the BBC reported.

I still NEED to see the new Who.

Yeah, talk about a good news/bad news situation. I can't help wondering how this is going to affect the show. Will people watch Eccleston if they know he's already leaving? Will the BBC be able to do an entire new publicity blitz next year? Will the audience be accepting of it? Or will they be suffering from "new Doctor fatigue?"

On the silver lining side, David Tennant already has some Doctor Who experience, having done Big Finish audio adventures with both Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, as well as one of Big Finish's Dalek Empire series and "Scream of the Shalka" for BBCi. If he's going to be the next Doctor, at least we'll be getting someone who should already know what he's getting into.

I really liked it, especially the interaction of the Doctor & Rose. I loved how excited he seemed, especially when something was dangerous (like Tom Baker if I vaguely remember him right).

I liked how proud of the TARDIS he was after Rose asks "What's a Police Public Call Box", he sort of stroked it lovingly and (standing in the middle of 21st century London) said "It's a telephone box from the 1950s. It's a disguise" *hehe*

Oh, they all know her from Ghosts of Albion. In fact, in Paul Cornell's novelization/behind-the-scenes account of his Doctor Who story "Scream of the Shalka," he refers to someone on the project as an up-and-comer, citing among other things that when he's in Los Angeles, he goes to Amber Benson's parties. :grin

I enjoyed the second episode, The End of the World. It was very funny and sad. We saw a lot more of the Doctor this time and I can see the similarity between CE and Tom Baker now. For me the best part was finding out a little about the Doctor's past, something I thought they would be ignoring for the moment. Hopefully we'll get more in the future.

After years of 4 or 6 25 minute episodes per story on TV and the Big Finish CDs it's going to take time for me to get used to a complete story being told in 45 minutes. It still seems too short.

Strange stories coming out of the BBC today - it seems that Christopher Eccleston really didn't say all that stuff about not wanting to be typecast and about how grueling the schedule was. So now we don't really know why he's leaving after only one season... :hmm

Meanwhile, Outpost Gallifrey has put up an archive page for this year's Gallifrey One convention. There are several photos of Amber, which I'll post direct links to over on the Witches & Vixens board.

best one yet?

Postby Still Waters Run Deep » Sun Apr 10, 2005 10:40 am

I enjoyed last nights episode, the best yet IMO.... this time The Doctor and Rose were in Cardiff 1869 and met up with Charles Dickens... well played by Simon Callow. It's a shame that the episodes only run to 45minutes and are wrapped up each time, with little or no continuity, but there you go......

It would be nice if they could go longer but it's the reality of making such an expensive show at the BBC these days, it has to be formatted with overseas sales in mind. The next story though is a two parter, Aliens of London/World War III, and we get into some serious continuity after that because everyone's favourite giant pepper pots are back...:)

David Tennant has been confirmed as the Tenth Doctor. The official BBC press release quotes him as saying, "I grew up loving Doctor Who and it has been a lifelong dream to get my very own TARDIS." :)

More details are available at Outpost Gallifrey.

Another good episode and it was great to see a cliffhanger ending again, but I could have done without the farting aliens. I'm sure the kids loved it though.

I really did not like the "You're so gay" comment.

I have a question from a mate who's also heavily into Doctor Who. He's a Jon Pertwee fan because that's his era, but he wants to know about Peter Cushing & why he's never included in the Doctor list. I know he was in the films rather than the TV show, but then so was Paul McGann.

We were talking about what would happen when the Doctor runs out of regenerations - and does he have 12 different bodies or 12 regenerations which would make 13? And don't ya think William Hartnell's Doctor must have led a quiet life if he managed @850 years in that body & only took 40 years to get through the next 8!!

Peter Cushing was considered to be playing the same Doctor as William Hartnell i.e. Doctor #1. The whole idea of the Doctor regenerating didn't even come about until William Hartnell had to give up the role for health reasons, so there was never any thought that Peter Cushing was playing a different Doctor.

For what it's worth, Rowan Atkinson and Richard E. Grant both played characters who were referred to as "the Ninth Doctor," but they aren't going to end up counting, either.

As for when the Doctor supposedly runs out of regenerations, I'm sure the producers will come up with some kind of technobabble that will allow him to have more. :)

All right full on nerd mode...

The Doctors Old arch enemy 'The Master' did indeed run out of regenerations and got round it by using someone else's body so it is established that a Timelord can get round the 12 regeneration limit.

Yeah its 12 regenerations so 13 bodies and I really hope the new series will be such a success that the Producers need to extend the number of regenerations.

Also Peter Cushing's Doctor is completely human. A lot of Doctor Who fans don't like the films but I love 'em. So '60s and groovy.

Actually the first Doctor lasted just over 400 years.

The second Doctor was aged 450 in Tomb of the Cybermen.

The Fourth Doctor often gave his age at around 750.

The 7th Doctor was 953 in Time and the Rani.

So about 500 years have passed over the course of the series. Oddly, the 9th Doctor claims he's 900, or rather he's been travelling 900 years.. maybe he is older... maybe he's just feeling his age a little and decided to lie?

Either way, the new show is fantastic, the ebst piece of genre television around currently.

There's a story about the next episode (titled Dalek) at the BBC site

This episode looks like it might be the best yet.

I've seen the Radio Times feature on this and it certainly looks like the Daleks have defeated their most dangerous enemy; a flight of stairs. :-D

Spoiler:
Todd from Coronation Street: "Don't worry, he can't climb stairs"
Dalek: "E-LE-VATE!"

I don't remember ever being as excited about a TV show as I am about the next Dr Who. Daleks and Billie Piper in a singlet.

The preview at the end of Saturday's episode seemed to show one of the old grey Daleks, but I though they had been redesigned. Possibly another Dalek episode later in the season?

Aceivan in the other ads and the magazine previews it is a dark gold colour, and it has all sorts of interesting 'improvements' over the original versions.

Spoiler:
The single Dalek in this episode is of the "classical" design. The "improved" Daleks do indeed show up at the end of the season.

Thanks for all the Peter Cushing replies..& there's nothing wrong with a bit of nerdiness!!

The writers have definately got a sense of humour. In the last episode World War Three there's an announcement from Downing Street:

The aliens have massive weapons of destruction which are capable of being deployed in 45 seconds

Sound at all familiar....?

A depressed Dalek????!!!!! :lol I mean really the poor thing and when its eyestalk drooped you just wanted to give it a big hug. I know it killed lots of people but it was obviously misunderstood. :devil

I enjoyed the ep even if some of the explanations were a little lame. The Dalek’s regeneration explanation was up there with why Spike could hit Buffy :glasses .

Eccleston brings a Tom Baker like madness and larger than life quality to the role and it is a shame he is going.

Magrat!.... long time no..... errr......

I quite liked the last eppy, especially the bit when they all ran up the stairs, knowing it could'nt follow, whereupon the Dalek levitated with all the speed and aplomb of a stena stairlift.......

Before the Dalek had it's nervous breakdown it did have much more of an unstoppable killing machine vibe about it thatn it ever did in the old days. It's levitation was a bit awkward but combined with the forcefield it didn't have to be quick. Of course rumours of the demise of the Dalek race may have been grossly exaggerated... :devil

One of my favourite scenes from the old series was Ace beating up a Dalek. She wouldn't have lasted long with this one. I thought the levitation could have looked better but it was good to see a bigger meaner non-wobbly Dalek and it was gold. Oops. :blush
