Short Story - Sanctuary

Postby intricate mirage » Sun Mar 28, 2004 1:23 pm

Title: Sanctuary

Author: Cassie (intricatemirage@yahoo.com)

Amidst the cloak of lies and deceit that surround this dark world, every one person has a true story to tell. Yet sad is the fact when a true story is told, rarely is it ever heard. A voice that passes by unheard, a tear that falls unnoticed, all that is left is a silence that kills, a world left unseen.

Girl in the corner, there she sat day after day. Willing herself to get up, pull herself together, telling herself that she is not alone. Taking in the deep cuts on her arms, she watches as each drop surfaces, flows down the skin and drips down from the very tip of her fingers. Time seems to suspend as each drop passes through space. Time fades away as it hits rock bottom. Time was lost. With every drop she bleeds, just like time, her soul fades away.

Standing up, she walks around, trailing her fingers along the dark grey walls. Broken mirror shards lay in a corner of the room, a mirror broken such a long time ago. Picking up a broken piece, she stares at a tear stained face. Tracing the contours of her cheek, nothing but an ordinary face, just another nobody along the common streets. Closing her eyes, she breathes in the musky dust filled air. Tracing the contours of her heart, nothing but a cut up, bleeding heart. A tear flows from her closed eyes. Closing her grip tight onto the broken mirror piece, it slices and cuts into her palm. As the tears dry up, a bloody river flows. As the broken shard falls to the ground with a resounding echo, slick with blood, her eyes open to reveal a certain hardness in them. Deathly cold.

Clench of her fists, advancing slowly towards the door, her feet leaving a bloodied mess in her wake as she makes her way across a series of broken beer bottles. Striking up a match, she lowers her head momentarily as her lips clamp down firmly on a stale cigarette stick, taking in a deep breath as the stick lights up and a pale glow is seen in the room. Smoke glides timidly across the room, searching out every corner, filled with darkness and pain, as though it was afraid. Reaching out her hand, fingers closing around the door knob. A girl clad loosely in casual shirt and jeans. A girl who could have been easily mistaken for just another ordinary normal girl along the street. Closes her eyes, breathing in deep the sweet taste of nicotine smoke that burns her throat. Searches for her soul. Finding none. Opens the door. Taking her first step out in the cold harsh light. Flinging the cigarette stick behind her, the amber glow burning out as the room consumed it, the way it consumed her soul. Silently, quietly. As though it never existed.

A hot shower is started up, biting down on her bottom lip, willing herself not to cringe as the warm water hits her bleeding wounds, stinging her body numb. Clear water turns into a sea of red as it flows from her body. A body turning cold as the hot steam warmed up the entire bathroom. The sea of red gradually regains back its initial state of being. Pulling on a fresh change of clothes, covering up the harsh lines that are drawn across her arms. Silence fills the entire room. A room with sunlight streaming in through its glass window panes. An entirely different room. A seemingly different girl stands in the middle of it. All covered up, with the very face that resembled one of an ordinary face, just another nobody along the common streets. Tracing the contours of her cheek in the mirror, listen. Can you still hear the faint beating of her heart?

Sunlight beats down on her body as she advances out of the place that has kept her safe. Nothing has changed since she had made her departure into her dark sanctuary. The birds are still chirping, the world is still spinning, the people around her are still living. Not a care in the world. Not a single worry about where she has been. She walks up to the group she used to call friends, they watch her advance, uncertainty written all over their faces. She smiles, only then do they welcome her with open arms. Never once asking what went wrong, they revert back to their original conversation topic. Talking. Talking. That's all they ever do. Hardly ever do they pause for a minute, to listen. She watches on, a smile across her face, a grey veil hiding her eyes away from the entire world. This was seemingly no different from the confines of her dark sanctuary.

If only someone had looked harder, observed her a little closer. They would notice the small movement of the unclenching of her fist. They would notice the drop of blood dripping down to the ground from a fresh wound. Nobody listens. Nobody watches. This world is no different from the world she had pulled away from. The long day wears on, the faint beating of her heart fades away. Walking with her head held high, back to her quiet space, nobody noticed the blood stains seeping out gradually onto her shirt sleeves. Nobody noticed the dragging of her feet.

She told me she had a dream once. It was a simple dream. Never one desiring for greatness. It was one that could be quite easily done. She never dreamt for the world to stop spinning, nor for time to wait for her. All she dreamt of as she watched her reflection in the mirror day after day, was for one person to notice her pain, to lay down a hand on her bleeding wounds without fear, to just simply tell her 'I am here'.

They found her the next day. Same girl as she had always been, sitting in the corner of her room. Blood flowing down her pale skin, dripping from the very tip of her loosely hung fingers. Bleeding herself dry. Someone said they heard an anguish cry in the middle of the night. She was praying for someone to have heard her. Yet it was merely dismissed as just another insignificant cry in the night. The girl had bled herself dry.

Listen. You can no longer hear the faint beating of her heart.

Amidst the cloak of lies and deceit that surround this dark world, every one person has a true story to tell. What was hers? Nobody will ever know. It doesn't matter anymore as I stand here, staring blankly at a grey tombstone. As the heavens open and rain comes pouring down, I lay my hand down on the coldness that was her resting place. She has finally found her quiet sanctuary.

The End

Cass xx

Yep, that about does it for replies, so here are two new poems. Hope y'all will enjoy them :) Once again, thanks to all who read :flower

untitled

hit me, stab me, hurt me

give me some shred of pain

bleeding wounds that will never heal

scars that are impossible to ignore

can someone hold me for a while

and let me feel my tears rolling down

consumed by a desire to have the

taste of salt on my lips

the warm droplets of water on my cheeks

hurt me, break me, please bleed me dry

protect me, shield me, let me heal

warm me up, take away the deathly cold

commanding my soul to hide away

a heart that can't help pushing away

split moment of insanity

screaming, yelling, a continuous crying

a bloody pool threatening to spill

cries of a homeless child

screams of a tormented soul

it was a mistake

there should have been the shatter of glass

the cry of release should have filled the air

the red river should have flowed steadily

there should have been an overwhelming darkness

***

Beautiful

You are beautiful, it's unfortunate we live in a world where only one definition of beauty exists.

Trail your fingers along the surface of the mirror

Trace the contours of the reflection of your cheek

Shameful eyes taking in the appearance that is you

A soft echo reprimanding you beauty is not skin deep

What would happen if I was scarred, never meant to be fixed?

Could you still be loving me, if I stopped being all you ever wanted me to be?

Lost is a heart shattered by a broken and cruel world

Safe is a surreal dream and fantasy once longed for

Futile are the quiet knockings on a soul that died

All that is left is a hollow eerie emptiness deep inside

What would happen if I was scarred, never meant to be fixed?

Could you still be loving me, if I stopped being all you ever wanted me to be?

Emerging slowly the lifeless eyes and sunken cheeks

A sadistic satisfaction consuming the body and mind

What would happen if I was scarred, never meant to be fixed?

Could you still be loving me, if I stopped being all you ever wanted me to be?

I am finally all you ever wanted me to be

I am finally beautiful
