Prologue

Buzz “lightyear” Stevensen stared at the controls of his space ship, The Wright-x. Over his headpiece he could hear the people at mission control going over the pre-flight checks and told himself that this was it. He was either going to make one of the greatest flights of his life, or he was going to die in a ball of flames. Either possibility seemed to be pretty good.

“Okay start the ignition system.” The call came from the control room.

Buzz flicked a couple of switches on the control panel and checked the relevant readouts. “Ingnition sequence, go.” He said. He listened impatiently to the countdown. Once it had reached zero he hit the launch button. The grapples that had been holding onto the ship gave way as it's first stage engines started up, moving the ship away from the Einstein space station. He double check everything to make sure it was all functioning properly. As he did so he thought of a third possibility, that the inertial systems would fail and the acceleration would leave him squashed against the rear bulkhead. That wouldn't be as much fun. A green light began blinking and he said, “Charging primary engine.” He pressed the green light and waited. After a few seconds the light came on permanently. “Activating primary engine.” He hit another button and another light came on. Due to the inertial systems he couldn't feel the acceleration, the only indication being the speed gauge rapidly rising. After he had been traveling a minute a red light started to blink, “Okay fuel is almost gone, I'm deactivating the engine.” He hit another button and with the anti-relativistic systems disabled the ship suddenly decelerated to a quarter of it's previous speed. Even with the inertial systems Buzz was thrown forwards, being caught by his restraints. “Okay how fast was that?”

“One moment.” the reply came, “We're just calculating that.” A few moments later they said, “We calculate your speed as one point zero three times the speed of light.” Anything further was drowned out by the cheers that suddenly erupted.

Mars News Network

“The news that has everyones attention at the moment is the recent breaking of the light barrier by an Earth ship. With us now we have the secretary for science to discuss the implications of this event.” The news reader turned to his guest, “Now secretary Mars has always prided itself on it's advanced space program but surely this recent news has been a blow to that.”

“Firstly I want to say that this is a great achievement which demonstrates the determination and ingenuity of all humans. Of course I would have liked it to be a Martian who passed this milestone but it is just a milestone on the way to something more important.”

“And that is?”

“Sending the first manned flight to another solar system. I will tell you now that the first such flight will be made by a Mars ship.”

“How can you say that when we are so far away from even breaking the light barrier?”

“Because I have faith in the engineers and technicians of the Mars Space Agency to overcome any problems they might face in order to achieve this goal.”

The news reader turned again, “There you go. Strong words from the secretary of science. We will see in time if he can live up to them.”

Part 1 – The prototype

Chapter One – Recruitment

“Controversy is still growing over the election of the first bioengineered bishop by the episcopal church. Conservative church leaders have warned that this would create a schism that would forever divide the church. However when I spoke to bishop elect Roger Davis he didn't seem too worried by these claims.

'what is your reaction to the controversy over your election? In particular the claims that this will create a schism in the communion?'

'Well it is true that certain conservative members have threatened that but when haven't they? They said exactly the same thing when the first woman bishop was elected then when the first gay bishop was elected. It seems to me that they aren't happy unless they're threatening a schism for some reason.'

'Why do you think is the cause of all this controversy?'

'Well there are people who believe that we bioengineered do not have souls and that we should there not be represented in church. However I believe that this is incorrect and no matter what a persons origins they are still people in God's eyes.'

That was bishop Davis speaking to me earlier.”

There were twenty colonies on Mars. Each one was contained within a large transparent dome, small pockets of life on an otherwise barren world. The colony of Taraopia was identical to the other colonies with two exceptions. It contained the headquarters of the Mars Space Agency and it contained one of the five space elevators which had been built on Mars. This one connecting Taraopia to the Anderson space station. Out in the suburbs of the colony Paul Philips was busy doing some maintenance on his car. Paul opened up the bonnet and gave the engine an appreciative look. He was a middle aged man who was just starting to show signs of gray in his hair. Though apart from that he seemed to be very fit. He opened up the engine cover and pulled out the graphite brushes. Putting them on a work bench he began looking for replacements. He looked up as he heard the door to the garage opening. “Hello Alex.” He said as he saw that it was his son.

Alex wondered over and looking at the engine he asked, “What are you doing?”

“Just tuning the car up a bit. I want to see if I can improve the efficiency a bit.” He put the brushes in place then closed the casing. He then started checking the cables.

Alex shuffled about a bit, as if wanting to say something, “Why don't you have a hover car?” He asked finally.

“Because they're a con.” Paul answered bluntly, “There's no advantage to them and they use up a lot more fuel.”

“But all my friends...” Alex stopped and looked outside, “Dad there's a woman here.”

Paul turned to look outside and saw that there was indeed a woman there. She was a quite short woman with short black hair . She looked as though she had tried to dress up smartly but had failed somehow. Normally Paul would have been annoyed by the interruption but there was something about her appearance that suggested she was a fellow engineer. Seeing that they had noticed her she raised her hand in a small wave and said, “Hi. I'm looking for Paul Philips.”

Paul straightened saying, “Then you've found him. And you are?”

“I'm Katherine Goodings. I work with the Mars Space Agency.”

Paul turned to Alex and said, “Why don't you go and find your mother, so I can talk to this lady.”

“Okay Dad.”

When Alex had gone Paul said, “So Ms. Goodings, what can I do for the Mars Space Agency?”

Katherine walked into the garage and said, “I'm sure you've seen the news report about Earth managing to break the light barrier a while back.”

“Yeah I saw that. That was quite a promise from the science secretary. I wonder if he'll resign when we fail.”

Katherine frowned at this answer, “So you've already decided we're going to fail?”

“Well Earth does have a pretty good lead on us, doesn't it?”

“True but I think that we can catch up. Which is why I'm here.”

“Oh yes?” Paul indicated towards the back of the garage, “Why don't you come through to where it's a bit warmer.”

Katherine followed him through to the back of the garage, that seemed to be a cross between an office and a game room. Paul indicated a snooker table and asked, “How about a game of nine ball.”

For a moment Katherine was a little surprised at the offer but deciding it's help break the ice she shrugged and answered, “Sure, why not?”

As Paul started to set the table up he asked, “Do you want a drink or anything?”

Katherine shook her head, “No thanks, I'm good.”

“Okay so how can I help with the great space race?”

“You designed a new style of engine just before you left the space agency.”

“That's right. It was decided that it couldn't be built at the time.” Katherine was surprised to note that there wasn't any trace of bitterness in his voice over this decision. She had heard lots of stories about why Paul had left the space agency and was under the impression that it hadn't been an entirely amiable parting.

“True but engineering techniques have improved since then and your design might be feasible now.”

Paul nodded, then grabbing a couple of cues he asked, “Do you want to break?”

“Your table.” Katherine answered, stepping back and indicating that he should break.

Paul did so then asked, “So what part of the agency do you work for?”

“The advanced research section.” Katherine answered taking her place at the table.

“Ah where you do lots of highly theoretical stuff which might one day be of practical use.”

Katherine shrugged and said, “That's a fair description.” She then potted the first ball.

“Do you know Anne Walker?”

“Uh, she's in charge of my department.” She potted the second ball.

“And you think that my engine will help reach Alpha Centauri.”

“Yes we do.”

“Copying Earth's design would be quicker.”

“For breaking the light barrier maybe but not for reaching AC. To be honest I don't think they'll ever get to the sort of speeds needed to make that trip.”

“True, it most likely won't scale to higher speeds.”

Katherine quickly potted the third and fourth balls then said, “But I think your engine will do, even if it takes a bit longer to get started with.”

“The question is does the MSA agree?”

“Ah, well there are two other possible designs in the running. We would need to prove that your design is the better one. So would you be willing to help?”

Paul stepped back and considered it as Katherine potted the next two balls. Finally he asked, “So why do you just work for the advanced research department? Wouldn't you prefer something more practical?”

“I guess I just enjoy running simulations more than getting my hands dirty.” Katherine shrugged as she potted the seven ball, “I'm not very good with my hands.”

Paul looked at the table, which now just had two balls on it, “You could have fooled me.”

Katherine giggled at this. Seeing the questioning look that Paul was giving her she said, “That's what my wife always says.” Seeing that he still didn't understand she went on, “Um, it's sort of a private joke.” She potted the eight ball then lined herself up for the nine ball before looking up and asking, “So do you think you might be willing to help or am I wasting both our time?” She hit the cue ball into the nine ball which hit the side of the pocket, ricocheted from side to side for a while before stopping in front of the pocket. Katherine stepped back shaking her head and said, “This is why I don't like this game. I always choke on the last ball.”

Paul moved to line up for the shot then said, ”I'll certainly think about your suggestion.” He then potted the ball.

“Okay then, thanks.”

Katherine started to leave but stopped as Paul said, “You know I would have thought that a clever woman like you would have come up to the answer to your nine ball problem.”

“What's that?”

“Pretend that you're playing ten ball.”

Katherine nodded, as she realised what he was getting at, then turned to leave.

***

Later that evening Paul was sitting with his wife, Karen, reading the paper when he suddenly put it down and said, “So The Mars Space Agency want me to help with their attempt to reach Alpha Centauri.”

Karen put aside the play that she was working on and asked, “Do you want to do it?”

“I guess it would be nice to see my engine being put to use.” Paul answered with a thoughtful expression.

Karen knew there were times when Paul had been at a loose end since leaving the agency and she guessed that doing this would help him, “Then you ought to agree.”

“It would mean working with Anne Walker.” Paul countered, knowing that his wife wouldn't like this.

“Ah.” Karen's voice became cold as she said this, she was temped to tell her husband to not do it, but she knew she couldn't do that. “If you really want to do this then I can cope with that.”

Paul nodded then said, “Yeah, I think that I do. Thanks.”

***

Paul arrived at the space agency early the next morning. It seemed to be pretty much the same as he remembered it. A large red stone building that was set in a vaguely pyramid like shape. Going in the sense of de ja vu only increased. The lobby was exactly the same as he remembered. A large open area with chairs set at various points and a reception desk off to one side. The only change was the logo that was painted on the floor. It now showed a space station in orbit round Mars, rather than being a picture of the solar system. The motto written round it was the same though, “To seek, to strive, to find, but never to yield”. walking up to the reception desk he immediately recognised the security guard who was sat there. “Hi David.”

“Hey Paul. It's been a long time.” He stood up to shake Paul's hand, “So what brings you to this neck of the woods?”

“I'm here to see Anne.” Paul explained.

“Do you have an appointment?”

“Not as such no.”

“Oh well if you'll take a seat I'll let her know that you're here.” Paul went to sit down and a few minutes later David called him over and said, “You can go right up.” Before handing him a visitor pass. Paul attached the pass to his jacket and headed to the lifts.

***

Paul found his way to Anne's office easily using the building maps. Judging from the size and location he guessed that she had risen within the organisation since he had left. Anne herself looked the same as he remembered though. A medium sized woman with light brown hair that pulled back in a bun, and who always seemed to have a serious expression on her face.

“Paul.” she said, in what was a perpetually low voice, ”I was surprised to hear that you were here to see me.”

“You were? So you didn't tell, um...” Paul hesitated as he tried to remember the name of the woman who had visited him, “Katherine to come and see me?”

“No.” Anne indicated for Paul to take a seat then looked thoughtful for a moment then said, “I take she did. I'm not surprised as she's been going on about using your engine for the Alpha Centauri flight for some time now. She's been busy setting up simulations in her spare time. You're here so I take it you want to help.”

“Yes, I'll do what ever is needed to get the project going.”

“Good.” Anne smiled, “You know there are two other possible designs?”

“Yes, she mentioned that.”

“Right well we have a month to come up with a presentation that will convince the pointed haired bosses to use your design. If you're willing I'd like to put you in charge of getting the presentation together.”

Paul nodded, “Okay. What sort of staff will I have? I'd like to have Katherine on it.”

“Since it was her idea I'd say that was a given. Actually I'd like you to work with Katherine's team for the presentation.” Paul frowned at this. “I know how you feel about theoretical work but there are some scary smart people in that group and I think you'll need that.”

Paul nodded, knowing that Anne was probably right. “Okay then, can you send me their personnel files?”

“Of course, I'll get it to you by tonight along with your ID.”

“Thanks. Well then I'll get started tomorrow.”

Once Paul had gone Anne began gathering together the files for the group Paul would be working with. She was about to copy them to a data rod when a thought occurred to her. She opened up Katherine's file and finding the section she wanted, she deleted it. As she saved the modified file she said to herself, “What he doesn't know won't hurt him.”

***

Paul spent the evening collecting together and going over the designs he had worked on when he had been working with the Mars Space Agency. When the package arrived from Anne he briefly looked over the files to get an idea of who he would be working with. He noticed that Katherine's IQ was listed as being one hundred and eighty three. He suddenly understood what Anne had meant when she had said the people in Katherine's team were scary smart.

***

The next day Paul was surprised to find that he was feeling a surge of excitement as he drove to the space agency. In fact after parking his car in the Agency car park he had to struggle to not run into the building so he could get started right away. It was only as he entered the reception that Paul realised he had no idea where he should go. He felt a moments panic which calmed as he spotted Katherine waiting for him. Standing Katherine raised her hand in the same waving gesture as she had used the other day, before walking over. Taking Paul's hand and shaking it she said, “Hi, I'm here to show you to our office.”

Paul smiled, “Okay then, lead on.”

As they walked to the lift she said, “I'm glad that you're going to be helping with the project. I mean I've read all the papers that you wrote during your time here.”

“You did?” Paul sounded a bit doubtful about this, “Some of them were quite dull.”

“What? No.” Katherine shook her head, looking a little confused, “They were very interesting.”

“Well if you say so.” Paul said with a shrug.

As the lift reached the right floor Katherine said, “I'm afraid it's a bit of a trek. We're kind of hidden off in outskirts.” She led him through a maze of corridors before saying, “Here we are.” It looked pretty much like any other office. The walls were a pale blue colour and the floor was covered by a thin dark blue carpet. Desks were scattered around it in a haphazard fashion, each with their own computer. She walked to a desk that was covered with printouts and folders, “This is my desk.” She began quickly began shoving the paperwork into various drawers saying, “Uh the agency recently introduced a clear desk policy. I sometimes forget.” Glancing about Paul noticed that Katherine wasn't the only person who forgot. There were only a couple of clear desks and Paul guessed that was because they weren't being used. Turning back to Katherine's desk he saw that with it cleared off he could see a picture of two women. One was Katherine and he guessed that the other, who was standing behind Katherine with her head resting on Katherine's shoulder, was her wife. Turning to Paul she said, “We'll have to sort a desk out for you.”

Paul nodded then, looking around again he said, “There aren't many people here.”

“Oh most of them are normally down in the simulator room at this time.” Katherine explained, “They'll be heading up here soon...” They were interrupted by a loud snoring sound. Going to investigate they found a young man asleep in his chair, his head lolling to one side. “Donald, wake up.” Katherine said. Getting no response she nudged him saying, “Donald!” again.

He woke up with a start, almost falling off of his chair. Seeing who had woken him up he said, “Kathy, you bitch.” Katherine frowned at this, folding her arms across her chest, “Uh..." Donald suddenly looked nervous, "I mean, Katherine, you bitch.”

Katherine lowered her arms, “That's better.”

The man scratched his head, “You know I had a late night.” Suddenly noticing Paul he jumped a little then said, “Uh hello sir, sorry I didn't see you there.”

“Donald, this is Paul Philips he's going to be in charge of getting the presentation ready for the Alpha Centauri flight.”

Donald blushed at this, “Oh, I thought you were the new director.” He turned to Katherine and asked, “So we got the go ahead for that?”

“Yes. I put a note on your desk.”

Donald turned and began going through the papers there. After a few moments he said, “So you did.”

Katherine coughed sharply. When Donald turned to her she said, “What was the memo we received last month?”

Donald stared at her a moment, not understanding. Then as he realised what she was talking about he quickly turned and began clearing his desk.

“So have we got a spare desk for Paul?”

“That one over there.” Donald said, waving with his hand towards one of the clear desks.

“Thanks.”

Katherine lead Paul to the indicated desk. “So I'll be working here.” He said as he sat down and began adjusting the chair.

“Yeah. There are ten people in our group. I'm kind of in charge. Donald over there is in charge of keeping everything running for us. He normally has to do his work quite late so don't be surprised if you find him asleep.”

“Okay, I won't.” Paul remembered how when he had worked here he had often worked through the night, then slept for most of the next day. He only hoped that the chairs were more comfortable now than they had been back then.

“I'll introduced you to the others when they get back.”

“Sure. I've had a quick look at your files.” Paul turned his computer on and said, “Anne said you'd been running simulations of my engine. Maybe you could take me through them.”

“Sure.” She went to grab a chair and brought it over.

***

After Paul and had been working for about an hour, the sound of Donald sleeping in the background, the other members of the team started to arrive in dribs and drabs. Most of them went to their desks but one of them, a young dark haired woman, came over and said, “Hey Katherine, where were you?”

“I was just showing Paul here around. Paul this is Megan, she's the resources manager.”

Megan gave Paul a dark look, “Oh yeah, I hear you're going to take over designing the engine for the AC flight.”

“Well that's the plan.” Paul said, wondering what he'd done to upset this woman so quickly.

“Whatever.” Megan turned to Katherine and said, “I've been able to talk the requisitions people into giving us a couple of new nodes for our server cluster.”

“Great, how did you manage that?”

“Now you know that's a trade secret.” Megan said, with a broad grin. “Well I've got to fill out a couple of order forms.”

“Um was it me, or did it seem that Megan doesn't like me?” Paul asked once she had gone.

“I didn't really notice. I wouldn't worry about Megan's probably just in a bad mood about something.” Katherine answered. Standing up she said, “Come on, it's time to do the whole first day at school thing.”

“Huh?” Paul said.

Katherine walked to the front of the room, which was dominated by a large computer screen. “Hey Everyone!” Katherine shouted. When she saw that she had everyones attention she went on, pointing at Paul, “This is Paul Philips.”

“Uh, hi.” Paul said as everyone turned towards him.

Katherine went on, “He'll be in charge of getting together the presentation to convince the pointy haired bosses to let us design their AC ship. Since he came up with the design for the engine he should be able to help a lot.”

“So we're being allowed to go through with that then?” A voice asked from somewhere near the back of the room.

“Yes, I left notes on everyones desks.”

As everyone turned to him Paul said, “Right, hello everyone. I understand that we have a month to get everything together. What do you know about the engine?”

For a while there was no answer.

“Uh, I take it not much.” Paul guessed.

“All we know is that Katherine's had a stick up her butt about ever since she heard about the whole Alpha Centauri thing.” Megan answered.

Paul glanced at her uncertainly. He was still getting the impression that he had somehow upset her. He thought about it a moment wondering if they had met before and he had forgotten. Finally giving up on the problem Paul turned back to the group and said, “Right. Well then I guess we should get started on it.”

Speechless right now. This is such a departure in style for you. A completely different voice and narrative style. I like what I've seen here so far, but I need to re-read it when I can have a little more quiet-- in a noisy atmosphere right now-- and when I have given it a fair re-read, I'll share more detailed thought and impressions with you.

For now, I take away: (My thoughts)

"Wow, this is really clever."

"And the science has just enough real physics-principles behind it to be convincing."

"Nine-Ball. What an interesting way to play that scene."

"She tried to dress very smartly, but failed somehow. Obviously an Engineer..." I'm still snickering at that.

"A race to Alpha Centauri-- Talk about a 'ticking clock' for the story."

"Bio-engineered people believed (incorrectly) to lack souls... Hey, I'll buy that :) "

I'll share more after I get a chance to give this a real, proper, non-distracted reading. Great start. Really great start.

StrangeQuark: Thanks. As always I'm glad that you're enjoying the story. Regarding the difference in style, I think this could be down to the circumstances that I was writing it under. I wrote this story during last years National Novel Writing Month and having to write a 50,000 word novel in a month did help cut down on the amount of uncertainty and hesitancy that I experienced.

The next update will be in the next day or so.

Chapter 2 – The Presentation

“Ashcroft syndrome is a progressive deterioration of the cellular structure of the skin which is unique to people living on Mars. Unless this syndrome is detected and treated early enough it is invariably fatal. So here are the key signs for detecting Ashcroft syndrome.

One: If a person cuts or bruises easily

Two: If they develop a fine red rash. This will normally appear on the arms first.

Finally sufferers will begin to lose the pigmentation from their skin. If you suspect that you or someone you know is suffering from this disease then it is important that you, or they see a doctor as soon as possible.”

***

Sandra Moore woke up to the sound of someone being sick. Sitting up she glanced at the clock. She groaned as she saw that it was only six in the morning. She had been up marking essays till just a few hours ago and a part of her was tempted to just go back to sleep. Cursing herself for her lack of concern about her wife Sandra forced herself to get up and threw a dressing gown on. Going through into the bathroom she found Katherine bent over the toilet.

“Oh god.” Katherine moaned as she retched again.

“What's this? morning sickness? you never said you were pregnant.” Sandra said as she moved to lean on the sink.

“Fuck you.“ Katherine managed to gasp out.

“Not while you're sick.” Sandra pointed out, smirking slightly.

“Hello, I'm sick here. You're supposed to be comforting me.”

Sandra knelt down beside Katherine and hugged her, “Sorry. Are you starting to feel better?”

“A little.” Katherine said in a small voice.

Sandra went to get a cloth and gave it Katherine, who began wiping her face. Once she'd done that Sandra got her a glass of water. “So what brought this on?”

“I can't do it.”

“Do what?” She had a feeling she knew what Katherine was talking about but wanted to find out for sure.

“The presentation. I can't do it. I know I'm going to mess it up. I'm going to ruin everything and...” Katherine started to look queasy again.

Sandra moved Katherine so her head was resting on her shoulder and began stroking her back, “Shh. Don't get so worked up over it.”

Katherine nodded.

“I don't think that you should go into work today.”

Katherine moved back slightly and protested, “But then we'll fall behind.” Her face paled as the thought of this made her even sicker.

Sandra nodded, knowing what to do in this situation, “Okay then why don't I go in for you and pick up some of your work and you can work here.”

Katherine nodded, knowing that there was no way she was going to be allowed out the door while she was feeling like this, “Okay, thanks.”

***

As Paul walked into the office he said, “Katherine I'd like you to...” He stopped when he saw who was at the desk. “You're not Katherine.” He said.

“What gave it away?” Sandra asked, her hand moving unconsciously to her long red hair that was quite a contrast to Katherine's.

Paul spent a moment trying to remember where he'd seen this woman before. Then he remembered the picture that was on Katherine's desk. “Um, you're Katherine's wife right?”

“Yeah, Sandra Moore.” Sandra said as she rose and shook Paul's hand.

“Paul Philips. Uh forgive me for asking this, but should you be here?”

“Technically, no.” Sandra answered with a wink. “Um, You see the thing is Katherine was feeling ill. So I'm just getting some of her files for her, so she can work at home.”

“Well if she's sick she should take the day off.”

“Ah normally but the thing about Katherine is that sometimes the pressure gets a bit too much for her and she starts to feel ill. If she's not doing anything then she'll just be thinking about the pressure and getting sicker. But if she's got something to work on it'll keep her mind off of it and she'll get better quicker.” Sandra explained.

“I understand. Well I've got no objection to her working from home.”

“Good, thanks. Well I'll just get the stuff and I'll get out of your way.”

“Though there were a few things I wanted to discuss with Katherine, so if you don't mind I'll come back with you.”

“Sure, that should be okay.”

***

When they got back they found Katherine sitting downstairs in a dressing gown. Paul was a little surprised at how pale and small she looked. The gloomy looking woman who was sitting in front of him was very different from the one he had been working with for the last week. “Hi honey.” Then as she saw Paul she said, “Eep. Uh I didn't know you were here.”

“I just thought we could go over some of the details for the presentation together.”

“Um, sure. I'll just go and get dressed.” Getting up she started to flee from the room.

Stopping her at the doorway Sandra said, “Sorry I should have called ahead.” Once Katherine had gone she turned to Paul and asked, “So, um would you like a drink?” Sandra asked, “Tea, coffee?”

“A cup of coffee would be great, thanks.” Paul answered. Looking round the room he said, “You've got a nice place here.”

“Oh, yeah we were lucky to get it.” Sandra answered as she walked into the kitchen. “We put our names down for a new house just as this development was finished so we got one of the houses.”

He walked over to the fire place and glanced at the wedding photos there. It seemed that they had gone for quite a traditional wedding as they were both wearing long white dresses. He smiled a little as he wondered how they had managed to avoid tripping over the other's bridal train. “How long have you been married?”

“It was our three months anniversary last week.”

“Oh congratulations.”

“Thanks. What about you?”

“My wife and I have been married just over twenty five years.” Sandra came in and handed him a mug, “Thanks.”

“Sit, please.” Sandra said, indicating one of the chairs. As Paul sat down she said, “I'm going to do some work. I've still got a load of marking to do.”

“Oh, do you teach?”

“Yeah, at the local technical college.”

“That's how we met.” Katherine said from the doorway. She had put on some casual clothes and was looking a lot better.

Sandra smiled as she remembered what had happened, “Yeah. I was taking my class for a field trip round the space agency. As we were leaving Katherine came running up to stop me saying I'd left one of my books behind and...”

“And would you like to come out with me some time.” Katherine finished. She grinned and went on, “It was only later that I admitted that I had stolen the book just so that I would have an excuse to talk to her.”

Paul smiled, “I did some crazy things so I could talk to Karen.”

Katherine sat down and opening her computer up she said, “So shall we get to work?”

Paul nodded and began getting out the files they had brought. Getting out one sheet of paper he said, “Last night I was thinking about the project and I made a list of the problems that we still need to work on, and some possible solutions.”

Katherine glanced at the list then said, “Wow, how late were you working on this?”

“Well I couldn't get to sleep last night.” Paul answered with a shrug.

As they were working Paul said, “There was something that I wanted to ask you.”

“Okay.” Katherine said, not looking up from her work.

Paul hesitated, wondering how Katherine would take his suggestion, “Well I'd like you to do the presentation with me.” The colour drained from Katherine's face. “I mean out of all the people in our team you know the design best, and you're the most eloquent.”

“You think so?”

“Yes. If you really don't want to then I can do it on my own.”

“No, I'll do it.” Katherine tried to sound confident as she answered.

“Okay then. That should make it easier.”

***

Anne locked up her office and glanced at her watch, wondering if she would have enough time to go to the cafe she like for lunch or if she would have to go somewhere closer. Deciding she would just pop into the place around the corner, which for some reason was called “Nothing special written all over it”. Having decided this Anne was just heading to the lift when she was stopped by a voice calling, “Hey Anne, wait up.”

Turning and forcing a smile on her face Anne said, “Hello Simon. What can I do for you?”

“I heard that you've got your team of crack pots working on an alternative engine design. Come on fess up, you're just doing it to keep them busy.”

“I'm doing it because I think that engine is our best chance of reaching Alpha Centauri.”

“Hah,” Simon sneered at this. “Everyone who looked at it decided it wasn't viable. Even you.”

“That was ten years ago.” Anne responded in a condescending tone, “Things have changed.”

“Maybe so. However I think that the council will go with a tried and tested solution.”

“Only if they're completely stupid.” Anne snorted. She had read Paul's report about how it would be hard to increase the speed of the tried and tested solution to much more than the current speed. She also knew that if they just copied Earth's designs then they would always be behind Earth.

Simon seemed to be totally unphased by this. He grinned as a thought occurred to him, “I know why you're doing this. It's to get Paul working here again.”

Anne scowled at him and answered in an annoyed tone, “Paul and I were not having an affair. I thought that you knew better than that.”

Simon smirked at this, pleased that he had actually been able to get to Anne, “Okay then, how about a bet?”

“What for?”

“Whoever's engine gets picked gets to use the time slots on the supercomputer of the loser for a month.”

Anne thought about it a moment then said, “You're on.” They shook on it and Anne said, “I better get going.”

As she was walking away Simon called after her, “By the way, my brother is on the board who are going to choose the engine design. I just thought you'd like to know that.”

Anne didn't respond, or even look around, but she smiled to herself at this news, thinking that if her choice were rejected and Simon's chosen she could use this fact in order to appeal the decision.

***

A few days before the presentation Paul commandeered one of the conference rooms for a few hours. They had split the presentation up into three parts with Paul speaking first, giving a general overview of the design of the engine. When he had first come up with the idea for the engine he had kept all of his notes and these proved to very useful for getting the presentation ready. Then Katherine went over the simulations that she had run showing that the design was now possible to produce. Then they went over the work that the team had done to demonstrate that this design would be better for reaching higher speeds.

When they had finished Katherine asked the others, “So what do you think?”

“Well you've got me convinced.” Anne said as she walked down from the back of the room.

“Anne I wasn't expecting you.” Paul said, though it occurred to him that he probably should have asked her to attend so that he could get her input on the presentation.

“I know. When I saw that you had the conference room booked I guessed that you would be practicing the presentation.” She turned to Katherine, “I was a little surprised to see you helping give the presentation.”

“Well I know the engine almost as well as Paul so it seemed logical.”

“You did very well. You should do it more often.”

Katherine blushed happily, but didn't answer.

“That was very well done, good work.” Anne turned to the others, “All of you.”

“So you think there's a chance they'll actually go along with this idea?” Paul asked.

“I wouldn't be backing it if I didn't think so. Though if you'll come round my office this afternoon there are some suggestions that we should go over.”

Paul just nodded having expected this since not only was Anne a pretty good engineer but she would also have a better idea about how to present their design to the managers.

***

On the day of the presentation Paul arrived at the Agency early and began getting everything ready. A short distance away the two other teams were likewise preparing themselves. They seemed to be rather more ready for the presentation than him and he was starting to feel a little worried. Especially since his partner hadn't turned up. Seeing Donald he called the young man over. “Have you seen Katherine?”

“She was here earlier.” He smiled and added, “I bet she's in the toilets chucking her guts up.”

“Hi, I'm not late am I?” Katherine asked as she joined them.

“No, though I was beginning to wonder where you were.”

“Oh just picking up some extra copies of the handout.” She held up the hand outs as she said this, “We don't want to run out.”

“How are you feeling?” Paul asked, thinking about Donald's comment.

“Not too bad.” Katherine gave Paul a weak smile, “I'm telling myself that this is just another practice run.”

“Is it working?”

Katherine grimaced slightly, “Just about.” She closed her eyes and took a couple of deep breaths.

“Don't worry, it'll be fine.”

Katherine nodded, though she didn't look convinced. Opening her eyes she asked, “How many people are there?”

“Ah...” Paul hesitated, not wanting to panic Katherine.

“That bad is it?” Katherine went to look out into the conference hall. Turning back she said, “Oh god.”

“Don't worry, it's just a practice, remember?”

“Yeah, just a practice run. With the whole of the space agency watching.”

“Come on we need to get ready, we're up first.”

“Is that a good or a bad thing?”

“I guess it depends on how you look at it.”

Katherine nodded knowing that she wouldn't have coped if she had had to wait while the other groups did their presentations.

A technician came in and told them that it was time. Katherine took a breath to calm herself, then straightening her jacket she said, “Well then, let's do it.”

***

Paul and Katherine had arranged for them all to go round Paul's place for some lunch after the presentation. Sandra had gone round in the morning to help get everything ready and to help keep her mind off what Katherine was going through. When Paul and Katherine arrived they found Karen doing some painting, while Sandra was sitting on the floor playing with Alex. Standing up Sandra came over and hugged Katherine.

Karen asked her husband, “How did it go?”

“Pretty well, I think we gave the strongest presentation.” Paul shrugged, “Well I guess it depends on what the council think.”

“Was it awful?” Sandra asked Katherine.

Katherine answered in a small voice, “Yes it was.”

“Well it's over now and even if they don't choose you it just means you can go back to running simulations all day.”

Katherine nodded, smiling at her wife.

“And I can go back to just tinkering with my car. Come to think of it I almost hope we do fail.”

“You don't really expect us to believe that do you?” Karen asked.

“Not really.” Paul answered, “Well then I should go get the barbecue started up.”

“What is it about men and barbecues?” Karen asked with a slight shake of her head.

“Um I think it's some kind of racial memory back to being a caveman.” Sandra guessed.

“Whatever it is, it makes a mess.” Karen shook her head then turning to Katherine she said, “I was talking to Sandra earlier and she said you don't have any family. Were you very young when you lost your parents?”

“That isn't what she meant.” Katherine explained, ”You see I'm a...” Katherine stopped as Alex fell over and started crying.

Karen ran over and said, “There there. Where does it hurt?” Alex showed her his hand and she saw he had a long cut there. “Could you get the first aid kit? It's up in the bathroom.”

“Sure.” Sandra ran off and Katherine went to help comfort Alex. A while later Sandra came back with the kit and they set about treating the cut.

“What's wrong with Alex?” Paul asked coming back into the room.

“He just had a bit of a fall.” Karen answered. She sprayed the cut with a healing agent and said, “There now all better.”

Alex nodded, still looking rather sullen.

“Come on Alex you said you were going to show us round the garden.” Sandra said.

“Oh yes.” Alex said, looking more cheerful now. Katherine and Sandra took his hands and they went out into the garden.

“What's up?” Paul asked his wife, who was looking round on the floor.

“I just don't see how he cut himself like that. There doesn't seem to be anything sharp.”

“Well you know how kids are.” Paul said.

“Yes.” Karen agreed, though she still looked worried.

“We'll check the room over later today, just to make sure there's nothing dangerous about.”

“Yes, of course.”

They were busy eating when Karen cocked her head, “Is that the door?”

“I didn't hear anything.” Paul answered. Katherine and Sandra both shrugged. Karen got up and went to check. A while later she came back looking rather unhappy. The reason soon became apparent when Anne followed her out.

“Sorry to interrupt you like this but...” She stopped as she saw Katherine and Sandra, “Ah Katherine, you're here too. Well that makes things easier. The council have come to a decision.”

“So what's the word?” Paul asked, not able to tell from Anne's expression whether the news was good or bad.

“They're going to go with your design.”

Katherine jumped up and shouted, “Booya!” Anne, Paul and Karen looked at her in shock while Sandra raised her hand to cover a smirk and Alex giggled out loud. Looking round at them Katherine said, “Sorry.” Before sitting down, blushing fiercely.

“Well I'm glad that you're enthusiastic.” Anne said, “Well I better get going.”

“You mean you can't stay? What a shame.” Karen said in a sarcastic tone.

Not seeming to notice this Anne said, “Well I'll talk to you tomorrow to discuss the arrangements.”

“Um, Anne I wonder if it would be possible to bring some of my classes to look round?” Sandra asked.

“Of course.” Anne answered, “Call me tomorrow so we can discuss it.”

“Cool.”

Anne turned to Karen and said, “I can find my own way out.”

When Anne had gone Karen turned to the others and said, “That woman is so infuriating.”

Sandra gave Katherine a questioning look but she just shrugged in response.

Hey Justin,

Quality reading time has been at a bit of a premium with me these past few months, and so I am miles behind reading "Ever After." However, when I saw you'd started a new story, and I had a few unscattered minutes, I thought I'd pop in and see what delights you had in store for us with AC.

Wow, was I surprised at the turn about in material. Different tone, different everything really. Not to say I at all disliked your previous stories, I was just taken at the departure you created here.

I enjoy reading these two chapters; solid characters, a good plot to build on, some secrets lurking in the dark (depending on one's point of view, I suppose - LOL), and a few refreshing twists. I'm looking forward to reading more. Great stuff!!

Cheers!!

Still going strong...

You did a really good job working in the back-story in this installment. Like the comments about Katherine and Sandra's meeting, the details of their wedding, and the length of their marriage. It all seemed natural in disclosure and relative to their behavior as we've witnessed so far. Really organic and smooth.

Description in this is a little light for my taste. This isn't a milieu story, I understand, but a few detailed peeks at the Martian lifestyle (it CAN'T be exactly like 21st Century Earth, right?) and the dwellings, beds, bathrooms, hairstyles, mundanities, clothing, low-gravity toilets, laser-beam ovens, silver jumpsuits, optical drinking fountains, etc. would really ground the story into its setting by helping us to understand the quality of life for the players. I've been keying-up a space opera of my own for the past few months (you and the other kittens will see it soon) and my proofer said that something seemed wrong with it. I had taken for granted that she would understand that this was a future history and naturally envision her own setting for the players. She did no such thing. I re-wrote -- just a little-- adding some setting, clothing, hair, food, bedding, bathing-- all the things that a present-day human could identify with and contrast their own experience to-- and she became much more engaged in the character's plight right away. Humans always thrive on details. Without at least a few, then it's almost like watching a movie with no sets or props-- not that it would instantly be a bad movie, just a movie that has to try EVEN HARDER to win the attention of its audience.

So, Alex has Ashcroft's Syndrome? I hope that Mum gets that treated right away... Unless it only SEEMS to be Ashcroft's Syndrome...

Katherine has the winning design. I hope that she gets more than she bargained for out of that since the victory was rather quick-- not that I dislike Katherine, I just dislike easy victories.

Sandra and Katherine have a great verbal intercourse. I actually felt like I was listening to a young married couple when I read their interaction.

Great story, Justin. I'm looking forward to more.

Patches: Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying the story so far. Yes there will be many secrets and twists which will amaze and astound you (you will be amazed and astounded or :punish ;) )

StrangeQuark: Thanks as always for your thoughtful feedback

I read that and thought d'oh, why didn't I think of that. Part of the reason for starting each chapter with a news story is to contrast life in the future with the present day. You're right though that there needs to be more description of day to day living in the story.

Though I have to point out that the reason I haven't been describing the sort of clothes people wear is that they don't wear any. That's right, they strut around totally naked. They're all like, "I'm naked and I don't care. Clothes are for Earthers." ;)

I have to admit that the way this sub plot came about was that Katherine was about to spill the beans on a plot point that I wasn't ready to reveal. So I tripped Alex up (Yes I know I'm a meany) in order to stop her giving away too much.

Yes getting her design selected was rather easy, but there's still a lot to do. Such as building the prototype, building the actual ship and then getting the damn thing to Alpha Centauri.

I have to admit that when I read this my first thought was (in my best Beavis & Buthead voice) hur hur hur, you said intercourse :blush I'm glad you're liking the repartee between Sandra and Katherine.

Thanks again for all your comments.

StrangeQuark: I forgot to say in the last post, I'm looking forward to seeing your space opera. I've had a few attempts at writing SO but have never been happy with the results.

Chapter 3 – Building the prototype

“Today was something of a historic occasion. Mickey mouse, the mascot of the one time Disney corporation has finally been allowed to fall out of copyright. Right up until the last minute the Zangress corporation, the current owners of most of Disney's copyright were fighting to get the copyright period extended but digital freedom supporters were able to delay the hearing of the bill so much so that Mickey Mouse has now entered the public domain. A representative from the corporation said that this was a sad day for all copyright holders which would no doubt discourage any future artistic works.”

***

Paul got up early on the day he was to start work on the prototype, feeling more excited than he had in a long time. Quite a few times while getting ready he had to work to curb his enthusiasm for fear of waking up Karen. She was normally rather grumpy in the morning and he knew it would go badly if he woke her up this early. Traffic was rarely heavy, with most people preferring to use the trams that were available rather than keep their own car. However this early the roads were almost completely deserted so Paul reached the agency building a lot quicker than usual. Entering the lobby of the space agency building Paul had a moment of de ja vu as he again found Katherine waiting for him. Though instead of coming over to greet him she continued working using the data glasses she was wearing. Going up to her he said, “Hi, what's up?”

Katherine jumped then said, “Sorry I didn't notice you there.”

“Obviously. So what's up?”

Katherine took off the data glasses and folding them up she put them in her pocket. “Oh Anne said for us to wait here for her.”

Paul nodded realising that they would probably be moved to a different part of the building, or possibly a different building all together. “So are you looking forward to getting started on the prototype?”

Katherine thought about it a moment then answered, “Yes, I guess that I am.”

“Well that's good. Personally I'm really looking forward to doing some construction work rather than just writing about it.”

Katherine smiled, “Oh yeah. You said you prefer getting your hands dirty.”

“While you prefer running simulations.” Paul countered.

“Well hopefully we'll be able to keep you both happy.” Anne said as she joined them.

“Hi Anne.” Paul said, “So what's up?”

“We've been assigned the new the wing for working on the prototype.”

“What about the rest of my team?” Katherine asked.

“None of them wanted to work on the prototype. They seemed to be happier going back to research.”

“Oh.” Katherine said, her face falling. She had hoped that some of them would continue with the project, if only so that she would know some of the people there.

“You can too, if you want,” Anne offered. She knew that Katherine had trouble dealing with pressure and she didn't want to be responsible for another employee having to leave due to stress. She also knew that Katherine would be a great help to the project.

“Oh no.” Katherine said quickly, “I want to keep on with this project.”

“Well good. If you'll follow me I'll show you to the facilities.”

Anne led them to a lift to one side of the foyer. “Green two.” She said into the control panel. “Right well Paul I'd like you to be in charge of the project.”

“Reporting to you, presumably.” Paul knew what the answer would be but thought that he had better check.

“Of course. Katherine I want you to focus on the design work.”

“Okay,” Katherine couldn't help smiling at this.

“So who's actually going to be making the thing that Katherine designs?” Paul asked.

“I've managed to grab Steven Norris from another section.”

“Steve? That old git's still working here?” He had heard several times that Steve had been sacked for some reason or other.

“Yes. We just don't seem to be able to get rid of him.”

“Well, will wonders never cease.”

“I believe he went over your designs when you first came up with them.” Anne went on.

“Yeah, he was the one who decided they weren't feasible.”

“Oh,” Anne looked worried a moment, “I hope that won't be a problem.”

“No, he was right.” The lift stopped and the doors opened. Anne then led them down a short corridor to a large construction area.

“Paul, I heard they'd managed to con you into coming back.” A short balding man said as he approached.

“Hi, Steve.” Paul answered as he clasped Steve's hand and shook it.

Steve turned to Katherine and said, “Hi. I'm Steven by the way. My friends call me Steve.”

“So I should call you?” Katherine asked, not wanting to be presumptious.

Steve laughed in a deep, jovial way, “Steve of course.” He turned to Paul and said in a stage whisper, “I like her.”

“Oh well I'm Katherine. Don't call me Kathy unless you have a death wish.”

“I'll keep that in mind.”

While they had been talking Anne had wandered off to pick up a couple of files. She glanced over at them then came back saying, “So, everyone acquainted.”

“Yeah.” Steve said, “So Anne this should be quite a feather in your cap.”

Anne nodded, “Only if it works out. Now we better meet the rest of the team.” They went through to an office area to the side of the construction yard where there was a large group of people waiting for them. Paul recognised some of them, but most of them were new to him.

***

Anne was just finishing up for the day when her com system began beeping. She considered ignoring it for a moment, but thinking it might be one of the Agency heads she decided she'd better answer. It turned out to be Sandra, “Hello Sandra, what can I do for you?”

“Well we discussed me calling to talk about bringing some classes to look round the site.”

“Oh yes. I was beginning to think you'd forgotten about that.” Anne said, not mentioning the fact that she'd forgotten herself.

“Yeah well I had trouble getting hold of the head to discuss it with him. Anyway I've got permission to bring the classes whenever it's convenient.”

“Of course. I'll need to get clearance. Then I'll get back to you later this week.”

“Sure, thanks.” Anne switched off the com unit. She thought a moment, then turned it back on again and called the security office.

***

Katherine spent the next week working on the design of the prototype. She was feeling lonely since the only person she knew there was Paul and she didn't find it easy talking to new people. So once she had a few moments to spare she headed to her old office. She tried to go directly from the new wing to her old office but that resulted in her getting lost a couple of times. Realising she didn't have much time she made her way to the reception then was able to find the right way to go.

“Wow, it's the prodigal daughter.” Megan said as she saw her, giving Katherine a forced smile, “No fatted calf though.”

“Um hi.” Katherine said, “So where is everyone?”

“Where do you think?”

“Oh right, the simulator. So anything interesting going on?”

“Did you want something?” Megan asked in a cold voice.

“Uh.” Katherine said, not understanding the way Megan was acting. “I just wanted to catch up. I guess you're in charge now.”

“Yes, you're not my boss any more. Do you know what that means?”

“Not really.” She really didn't like the way this conversation was going.

“It means I don't have to pretend that I like you any more.”

Katherine started to laugh but stopped when she saw the expression on Megan's face. “You're joking right?”

“Do I look like I'm joking?” Megan responded.

“I don't understand. I thought we were friends.” Katherine pleaded, still hoping that this was a weird joke.

“You thought I could like a freak like you? God that's a laugh.”

Deciding that she'd had enough of this Katherine turned and fled the room. With a slight shrug Megan went down to the simulator. Neither of them noticed Donald apparently sleeping a short distance away.

***

Paul and Steve were both in the design room standing by the large screen that was situated at one end. Most of the screen was taken up by the schematics of the engine while the rest showed the readings from the simulations they had run. Paul pointed at some of the values and said, “We still need to improve the efficiancy of those converters.”

“I'm not sure that it's possible to improve them by much. Isn't there somewhere else we could get the total power emissions up.”

“Possibly.” Hearing the door open he turned to see who it was, smiling when he recognised Katherine “Ah here's the person to ask.”

Katherine sat down crossing her arms across her chest, an angry expression on her face. After a few seconds she sat forward and began typing, but with the same expression.

“Now that isn't a happy face.” Steve pointed out.

“Yeah. I'll just see what's up.” Paul went over to Katherine and asked, “This is probably a stupid question but is something up?”

“You could say that.” Katherine answered, “Just the fact that the person who I thought was my best friend actually hates me.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah. It turns out that she was just pretending to like me because I was her boss.”

Paul quickly diciphered what she was talking about. “I take it you mean Megan. Are you sure that she hates you?”

“That's what she said.”

“I'm sorry. I'm not sure what I can do though.”

“That's alright. I think I just want to focus on work.”

“Ah that's good as we have a problem that we need you to look at.”

***

Paul glanced at his watch and was surprised to see how late it was. It had only seemed to be a little while ago that it had been the middle of the afternoon. As he shut down his computer he looked around, expecting to be the only person there. So he was surprised to see Katherine still busy working. Going over he said, “I think it's time to call it a night.”

“I've almost got this sorted out.” Katherine answered not looking up from her computer.

“I'm sure that you'll do it a lot quicker if you've had a chance to sleep on it.”

Katherine took one last look at her screen then sighed, “I guess you're right.”

“Come on, I'll give you a lift home.”

“Thanks. I wasn't looking forward to getting the shuttle at this time.” She shuddered a little when she thought about some of the people that she saw on the shuttle late at night who were, to put it mildly, just plain weird.

Once Katherine had shut her computer down they headed down to the garage. As they got into Paul's car he said, “I'm sorry about your argument with Megan. It can be hard to find out that someone you thought was a friend was just leading you on.” Paul thought back to the couple of times when people who he thought were friends had turned out not to be. Even after all this time he was still hurt and a little embarrassed by the experience.

“Yeah. It's just I had no idea that she felt that way. So does this mean that everyone in my team feels the same way? I always thought we got on pretty well but...” Katherine left the thought unfinished.

Paul was silent a while, not certain what to say. He knew that being betrayed in this way hurt but he didn't know anyway to make it better.

“Well thanks for listening to me moan about it.” Katherine said finally. Apart from Sandra she generally didn't like discussing her problems with other people, feeling that she was somehow imposing on them.

“Yeah, you know whatever Megan might feel, there are a lot of people who do like you. You're a very likeable person.”

Katherine actually smiled a little at this, “Thanks.” Paul pulled up outside Katherine's house and she got out saying, “So I'll see you tomorrow.” Paul watched as she went into the house, then he pulled out and drove home.

***

When Paul got home he found that Karen and Alex had already eaten their dinner. “Sorry, I lost track of time, and I gave Katherine a lift home.”

“I hope you're going to start overworking yourself again.” Karen answered, trying to keep her tone as neutral as possible.

Paul raised his hands, “No, I learnt my lesson last time.”

“Well good.”

“I'm just going to heat some food up.” He went through into the kitchen and got some food out of the fridge. After a few seconds Karen followed him.

“My play's being put on next weekend.”

“Oh yes, I've got it marked in my organiser. Don't worry I won't let work get in the way of seeing it.”

Karen blushed a little realising that it probably sounded as if she was nagging him. “I didn't mean it like that. I just thought since we've got a couple of spare tickets, why don't we invite Katherine and Sandra?”

“That's a great idea.” Paul enthused, “But are you sure? I mean you don't normally get on that well with people from work.”

“Well no, normally I don't but I like both Katherine and Sandra. Also if Katherine is working as late as you then Sandra will probably need an excuse like this to be able to spend a bit of time with her.”

Paul nodded, “Yeah, I had to pry her away from her keyboard to get her to come home today. See she's even worse than me.”

Karen smiled, “Well then we'll have to do something about that won't we.”

“Uh, yes.” Paul said, not sure what his wife meant. He just knew that when she got her mind set on a project she stuck with it no matter what.

***

Katherine was alone in the design room, making the finishing touches to her design changes, oblivious to everything around her, when someone said, “Uh, hi.” Causing her to jump.

Spinning round she glared at the person responsible and said, “Donald, you made me jump.”

“Uh, yeah I forgot how focused you get on your work.”

“So what's up? Have you decided you need to tell me how much you hate me as well?”

“Uh, look I'm sorry about what Megan said.”

“So she told you.”

“Actually I was there. Um, things seemed to be a bit tense between you so I pretended to be asleep.”

“Right.” Katherine said, not sure that she could blame him. She would have pretended to be asleep if it would have gotten her out of that conversation.

“Anyway I don't know what's gotten into Megan but I wanted you to know that we don't all feel that way. I mean we all like you and we weren't just pretending.”

Katherine smiled, “Thanks, That means a lot to me.”

“Personally I think Megan is just jealous. She's never going to be as good at the job as you are. I mean she's pretty smart but you're like freakishly clever.”

Katherine frowned a little, “So you think that I'm a freak as well.”

“Uh, well, um...” Donald muttered, not sure how to answer.

“It's okay, I know what you mean.”

“So we're good?”

“Yeah we are. Thanks for coming round, I really appreciate it.”

“Don't mention it. I just wanted an excuse to see your new office.” He looked round then said, “Doesn't look too different from the old one.” He glanced at his watch then said, “Well I better get going. I think I might apply to transfer to another department.”

“But the advanced research group won't be the same without you.”

“Yeah but it already isn't the same without you there so that won't really matter.”

“Oh, sorry.”

“Don't be. This is a great opportunity for you. I would have continued with the project but...” He finished with a slight shrug. “Well I'll see you around.”

“One moment.” Katherine said, before he could go, “You know most of the gossip right?”

“Yeah, what do you want to know?”

“Uh well there seems to be some animosity between Anne and Paul's wife. I was wondering if you knew what it was about.”

“Uh well, what I've heard is they were having an affair and that's why Paul had to leave the Agency.”

“Oh, right.” Katherine said, not sure of what to make of that. She hadn't thought that Paul was the sort to cheat on his wife, “Well thanks.”

“Anytime.” Donald said, “Well I'll see you around.”

At the end of the week Paul called Katherine and asked to come round to his place the next day. When she arrived she found him, once again, in the garage, she asked, “So what's up?”

“Oh there was just someone I wanted you to meet.”

As he said this a young man came through from the back of the garage. “I don't know how you manage to get the petrol to run this thing.”

“Very funny.” Paul said, “Tony this is Katherine, she's working with me on the prototype. Katherine this is Tony Wells, he'll be doing the test flight.”

“Hi. It's nice to meet you.” Katherine said as she moved to shake his hand.

Tony smiled at her and said, “Paul told me all about you, but he never mentioned just how beautiful you are.”

“Uh, thanks but.” Katherine held up her right hand, showing off her wedding ring.

Tony's smile grew at this and without hesitating he went on, “Well you know if you ever get tired of your husband and feel like having a real man then...”

“Uh the chances of me getting tired of my wife are about as high as the chance of me wanting a real man. Besides Paul is happily married.”

“Ouch.” Tony winced.

Katherine decided that she didn't want this meeting to go on any longer than necessary so she said, “Well it was nice meeting you, I guess.” Katherine said, “But I better get going.”

When Katherine had gone Tony smiled to himself and said, “Oh yeah. She wanted me.”

“Can I ask you something?” Paul said.

“Sure.”

Paul tried to hold back the annoyance he was feeling at Tony. He had been going to ask Katherine to stay for lunch and wasn't happy at the way Tony had chased her away. Only half joking he asked, “Why are we friends again?”

***

A week later Katherine and Sandra got ready to go to see Karen's play. “It's pretty cool, isn't it?” Sandra asked suddenly as she checked her make up.

“What is?” Katherine asked, she was trying to decide between a pair of tops. She was alternately holding each one up to her body trying to work out which one went best with her trousers.

“Well you know the fact that we know a play write. An artiste.”

Katherine grinned and said, “Yeah, it is pretty cool. What's the play called again?”

Sandra grabbed the program then answered, “Uh, Sirius planar. Not many people in it.” Sandra considered it a moment, “Isn't that where the mental hospital is?”

“Yes,” Katherine answered in a subdued tone, her head bowed.

“Shit,” Sandra swore softly, berating herself for her insensitivity. Walking over to Katherine and taking her hand she said, “I'm sorry, I should have known this would be a problem.”

Katherine nodded, “Bad memories.”

“We don't have to go.”

Katherine looked up at this, “But we to;d Paul and Karen we would.”

“We could tell them I'm sick, or that I'm having one of my funny turns.”

“No.” Katherine shook her head, “I'll be okay.” She forced a smile, “Besides I've been looking forward to this.”

“Well if you're sure.” Sandra turned back to the program. “Apparently it's very experimental.”

“Oh oh.” Katherine said, looking worried again.

“What?” Sandra put the program down and gave her wife a quizzical look.

“Well what do we do if it's, you know, crap?”

“What do you think? We lie of course.”

“Oh yeah.” Katherine frowned, “I just hope that I can be convincing.”

“You won't need to be, the play will be great.”

“Oh yes, of course. I mean, what am I worrying about?”

“Are you going to choose a top?” Sandra asked smiling at her wife's indesiciveness. It wouldn't have been so bad but to her eyes both tops looked the same.

“Uh, well...” Katherine was cut off by the door bell ringing. She quickly threw one of the tops away saying, “Tell them I'll be down in a minute.”

“Sure.” Sandra said as she headed for the stairs.

***

Once Katherine had gotten ready they drove out to the theatre hall. It was a large circular building set near the centre of the city. The play was being held on the second floor. As they entered the hall Karen said, “The seats aren't too great, considering I wrote this play.“ She huffed a little as she said this.

As they found their seats and sat down Sandra said, “I don't know, these seem to be okay. Though to be honest I don't really know where the good seats are.”

“We don't go to many plays.” Katherine explained.

“Oh well then this should be a new experience for you.” Karen said, grinning at them. Sandra and Katherine both looked at each other, not sure how to take that.

***

When the play had finished they all left the theatre building. Sandra shivered as she went out into the cold night air. Noticing this Katherine put her arm round her and pulled her close saying, “It's cold out tonight.”

“Yes.” Paul agreed, “I'll just put the heating on in the car.” As she said this he pulled out his cars remote and switched on the heating, before telling it to come and get them.

“Normally when Paul and I come to one of my plays, we go to a small restaurant that's nearby. You're both welcome to come along if you want.”

Katherine and Sandra both readily agree and they set off to the restaurant. As they went inside Katherine and Sandra saw that Karen hadn't been kidding when she had called it small. There were only ten tables, most of which were full. Whilst they looked at the menu Karen asked, “So what do you think?”

Katherine and Sandra both looked at each other as if trying to figure out what to say.

“Now be honest. I won't mind if you didn't like it.”

“Well it was certainly interesting.” Katherine said, hesitantly. She had actually enjoyed the play, The problem was most of it had gone over her head.

“Uh yes.” Sandra agreed, “I mean I liked it, it was very well written. There were just a couple of parts that seemed a little rushed.”

“Yes, I think I'll have to work on the pacing a bit.” Karen said, looking thoughtful. “I'll talk to the director about it tomorrow.”

“But what was up with the mime? I totally didn't get that.” Katherine asked, that was the part that was troubling her most about the play. She felt that if she could just understand that then the rest of the play would be a lot easier for her to comprehend.

“The mime was supposed to represent the way that our version of reality is shaped by the way we perceive it.” Paul said suddenly. Up till that point he had been silent, looking over the menu. Looking up from it he said, “Karen went over the play with me when she was working on it.”

“I thought that bit was obvious. Maybe I should rewrite it.”

“Um. What you have to understand is that we're all engineers.” Katherine pointed out.

“You're right, I shouldn't expect you to get things like this.”

***

When they had finished their meal Katherine and Sandra turned down a lift home. “It's not too far.” Sandra explained, “And the exercise will do us good.”

“Well if you're sure.” Paul said, “I mean as you said, it'd pretty cold.”

“We'll be alright. I like going out walking at night. It's so quiet.”

“Sandra has a lot of weird fetishes like that.” Katherine confided, earning a hey from Sandra.

“Well okay then.” Paul said, “Katherine, I'll see you tomorrow.”

“Yeah, see you.”

When Paul and Karen had gone Sandra slipped her hand into Katherine's back pocket, while Katherine did likewise. They then started walking home. They decided to cut through a small park which was on the way home. The directional lights meant that the paths were well lit, while the rest was in darkness. “So how's work going?”

“It's going pretty well. We've almost got the design work finished.”

“That's good. So you're holding up okay?” Sandra asked.

“Yeah. I think that Paul is trying to keep the pressure away from me. Which is nice of him.”

Sandra nodded, “It's also sensible.”

“How so?”

“Well he's probably worked out that you work quicker when you're under less pressure.”

“True. I am a lot more productive when I'm just left to get on with the work. Still with most of the designs done I'm mainly just going to be supervising the construction work from now on.”

“That's good. What about when the prototype's done? Will you be working on the main ship?”

“I might be, or I might be sent back to my old team.” Katherine frowned a little as she remembered her argument with Megan. Putting it out of her mind she said, “Or somewhere else. I'm really just concentrating on the prototype at the moment. I'll worry about what comes after when we get to it.”

“Good idea. Take it one step at a time.”

“What about you? Are you still having trouble with that teacher?”

“You mean Norman? Oh, he's gone.”

“You mean he was fired?”

“No. It was weird. I was in the teachers' lounge when I heard about it. Apparently he left his class to go to the bathroom and then he never came back.”

“Strange. Maybe he was abducted, you know, by aliens?”

“I think it's more likely he just couldn't cope with the work. The other teachers had a party. I kind of feel guilty about that. I mean it's not very nice.”

“Yeah but he went out of his way to cause you trouble.”

“Yeah.” Sandra agreed as she remembered some of the things that he had done to her, “He was a nasty piece of work. Watch out.” Sandra guided Katherine out of the way as a robot sweeping unit ran along the side of the path. Once it had gone by they continued on their way, “The aptmosphere at the school has really improved since he left.”

“Well I'm just glad he isn't round to cause you trouble any more.”

“You mean so you don't have to listen to me complaining about him any more.”

“Of course not. You can complain about whatever you want,” Katharine put on a stern face, “I just don't like people upsetting my girl.”

Justin—

I like the details that you’ve worked into this. They do help a great deal with establishing the setting for the players. You’re doing a good job with the third person omniscient POV. True, it creates a little distance between the characters and the reader, but it does make up for that in terms of time-perception and general story flow. This is an idea-story, so character intimacy is less important anyway. Not to say that I don’t have an interest in the characters, just that—as your title suggests—this is a story about an idea and its realization more so than the people who make it happen. You’re keeping that in a nice balance; giving us details about the persons and their lives, commenting about the world(s) in which they live (Tux is WAY cuter than Mickey Mouse, BTW, so is Wilber for that matter,) and illustrating the commonalities that they share with the current human societies.

There’s an axiom for writing—Show, don’t tell. It’s only half-right, though. There are times when showing is better, and other times when telling fits the bill. When a character is experiencing an emotion, it’s usually best to show it with physical reactions and displays—depending on how important it is to the reader. Telling is more direct, but usually with less impact than showing when it comes to character emotion. You may want to save the telling for backstory, time-compression, and comparison (that was then, this is now.)

[--“Once Katherine had shut her computer down they headed down to the garage. As they got into Paul's car he said, “I'm sorry about your argument with Megan. It can be hard to find out that someone you thought was a friend was just leading you on.” Paul thought back to the couple of times when people who he thought were friends had turned out not to be. Even after all this time he was still hurt and a little embarrassed by the experience.”--]

You can show while telling instead… Like this:

----------------------------------------------

Paul looked straight ahead, peering through the windscreen, saying, “I’m sorry about your argument with Megan…”

The nagging hurt of past embarrassment began to seep into Paul’s conscience as he recalled the pain of betrayal that he felt in similar circumstances. He shifted on the smooth plastic of the car’s seat, turning to give Katherine an understanding smile. “It can be hard… to find out that someone you thought was a friend was just leading you on.”

---------------------------------------

Notice that now the pain has an active role—seeping—and a descriptive characteristic—nagging—which ‘show’ the experience to the reader… through telling. Tricky business this, but it’s very effective and saves a lot of potential ramble. However, you’ll also notice that we’re in danger of veering this into a character-story. Give a little too much of that, and you’ll betray the intent of the work… Like I said: tricky business. …But worth your attention nonetheless.

So, Megan has a little antipathy toward Katherine. Interesting. I wonder what ALL of the reasons behind it may be?

Paul may have been philandering… tsk, tsk, tsk. But, then again, it’s just a rumor at this point.

I understand what Tony’s all about—I think so, at least. What does he look like? Young ash blonde buzz-cut test pilot type? Firm, square jaw and steely eyes? The kind who’d assume that he’s God’s gift to everyone? Short and stocky (small man, big mouth?) Paul’s annoyance… He feels it on behalf of his entire gender, no? Tell us that. It says a only little about Tony, but TONS about who Paul is.

Sirius Planar—What an interesting sore-spot for Katherine. You realize that you HAVE to tell us more about that. Save it for later, though. It’s propulsive to leave us some suspense.

[--“Um. What you have to understand is that we're all engineers.”--] I like that. I chuckled out-loud.

What’s Norman been doing? Again, we’ll wait to find out. I like the protective Katherine, too. Hands in each other’s back pockets is also a nice, touching little detail.

Great stuff, Justin. I’m looking forward to more.

I'm glad you're liking the details in this part. I'm going to try to introduce more as the story continues.

I understand your comments balancing ideas with characters. I think that people relate to characters more than they do to ideas, so unless a story has compelling characters it won't draw people in. My main inspiration for writing SF is Philip K. Dick. While he mostly wrote about ideas he did always include a range of interesting characters into his stories.

I agree that the show/tell dichotomy is something that needs attention when writing, and that it can be a tricky business (Well if something isn't difficult it isn't worth doing, which is why I always hop around on one leg rather than walking ;) )

Quote:

Yes there is a certain amount of dislike there. Maybe connected to your next comment, maybe not.

True and office gossip isn't the most reliable of sources.

Yes, that's pretty much what he's like.

Yeah, I know I'm building up a lot of mystery about Katherine. Not only the Sirius Planar thing but also what it was that Anne deleted from Katherine's file. All of this will be explained.

Quote:
What’s Norman been doing? Again, we’ll wait to find out.

Actually this was just a passing reference (based on something that happened at work) so it won't be developed on too much.

Thanks for all the comments.

Chapter Four – Test Run

“Now here's a blast from the past, airships. New construction materials have been developed that will make them very cheap to build. So they are being proposed as a new form of luxury, if rather slow transport. They will be used as cruise ships taking people for a cruise round some of the more prominent Martian colonies. Measuring almost a kilometer long these ships will offer the ultimate in comfort to their passengers. Already orders for flights has outgrown the companies ability to produce them, so it's obviously a popular idea.”

***

Katherine was trying to collate and index all the tests she had run so far but was being distracted by the loud repetetive beeping that filled the room. Finally she got up and went out into the construction yard to find out what was going on. She found a large robot lorry backing slowly into the yard. Seeing Steve standing watching it's progress Katherine went up to him and asked, “What the hell is that?”

“Construction unit. That'll build all the parts for the prototype. Haven't you ever seen one of those before?”

Katherine shook her head, “No, I can't say that I have.”

“Oh well then this will be a new experience for you.”

“Yeah I seem to be having a lot of those lately.” Katherine muttered.

“What?”

“It doesn't matter.” Having reached the correct spot the lorry lowered it's payload to the floor, then the front section drove away. The cargo then began to open up, becoming a long structure covered with complicated machinery. “So that'll make the ship?”

“It'll make the parts. There are two more units.” He pointed at an empty space next to the construction unit and said, “We'll have a unit there for testing the parts, and next to that a unit for putting them together.” The area was filled with beeping again as the robot lorry returned. Realising she wasn't going to be able to do any work with all this commotion Katherine grabbed her data glasses and said, “I'm going to go do some work outside.” Before leaving.

***

The primary engine was built first and it was then moved over to the testing area, where Katherine supervised the dry runs. She was just checking the power usage figures from one of the test runs when someone tapped her on her left shoulder. Turning to her right she found Sandra there.

“Sandra.”

Sandra smiled, “Hi.”

“Um I don't want you to think I'm not happy to see you, but why are you here?”

“I was showing a class round the facility.”

“Oh and you lost them. That's careless.” Katherine shook her head, looking disapproving.

“No. They're watching a presentation from some of the staff. I thought I'd sneak out and find you.”

“Cool, but you're doing this all wrong.”

“I am?”

“Yeah, you're supposed to be in some kind of a uniform and you should pick me up and carry me out. Then I take you hat off and put it on and some one shouts, 'way to go Katherine, way to go.'”

“Uh, not today.”

Katherine sighed, “Fine.”

Sandra turned to the engine and said, “So that's the thing that's going to take us beyond the speed of light.”

“Hopefully, yes. Though not if we can't get the power output up.”

Sandra suddenly looked worried, “Should the engine be on fire like that?”

Katherine spun around panicked, only to see that it was perfectly fine. Reaching for the com unit she said, “That's it, I'm calling security.”

Sandra glanced at her watch, “Ooh, I've got to run.”

“Sure, it was great seeing you.” Sandra kissed Katherine, then left. It was only when Sandra had gone that Katherine saw that she'd left a book behind. Smiling she picked it up and told herself she'd have to get it back to her before she left.

***

Katherine watched in awe as a crane that was suspended from the ceiling carried the engine from the testing unit to the integration unit. Further down other parts were being carried into the testing unit. As Paul joined her, carrying a computer clipboard she said, “This is all pretty amazing. I mean there's so much machinery.”

“Well it takes a lot to build a space ship.”

Katherine nodded, “I guess. Will the proper ship be built here?”

“No, it's much too big. It'll be built in orbit. Most likely the Anderson station. Though the process will be the same.”

“Yeah well I'd like to see that.”

“I'm sure you'll get the chance. We'll have to make regular trips up to the station to supervise the construction.”

“That's assuming that we're still involved in the project. Well I can't stand here all day. I've got to run some more tests.” With that she returned to the testing unit. Paul checked a couple of things on his clipboard then went to the integration unit.

***

After working for several hours Paul decided to have a short break. When he got to the canteen he found Katherine already there. She was working on a small computer pad. He got a drink then went to join her. “So what are you working on?”

“Oh, just going over the test results for engine. They seem to be as we expected.”

“Good. We appear to be ahead of schedule.”

“We are?” Katherine was a little surprised by this news as she hadn't really thought about the schedule, though she knew that there had to be one. “That's good.”

“It'll be another month before the prototype is finished.”

“Then it'll be on to making the main thing.”

“Well as long as the prototype works out okay.”

“I'm sure that it will.” Katherine turned her computer off and put it away before picking her drink up. She took a sip then said, “Sandra and I were watching some old films last night. From the twentieth century.”

“Any good?” Paul asked.

“Depressing mainly.” Katherine answered, “It seems that people at the time were constantly either hanging themselves, throwing themselves off of buildings, or being crushed by trees.”

“Maybe you just weren't watching the right films.”

“Yeah, we came to that conclusion last night. We made the mistake of choosing films about lesbians.” Shaking her head Katherine stood up and said, “Well I'm going to print out these results and put a copy in the file.”

“Can I have a copy?”

“Sure.”

***

Tony climbed up the ladder to the simulator then swung himself down through the hatchway. As he strapped himself in he looked over the controls. “Hey these look like the controls for the old XJL.” He said.

Paul, who was standing outside at the control station said into the radio, “Yes we're reusing the interface from one of them. We wanted something you'd be familiar with. Okay begin pre-launch check.”

“Well it's been a while since I've flown one of these.“ He began a series of diagnostic runs then said, “All systems operational. Okay I'm releasing the grapples and activating navigation engines.” He guided the ship away from the simulation of the Anderson station and into empty space. “Okay that should be far enough away.”

“Hold on there. You're not clear of the station yet.” Paul watched the readout for a few seconds then said, “Okay, start charging the engine.”

“Charging.” After a few seconds he said, “Okay I'm activating the engine.” As he did so the simulation died down, “What's happening?”

“That's it. We won't know what's going to happen till we actually do a test flight.”

“Oh, well that was easy enough.”

“Yeah, lets hope that it goes this well when we do the real thing.” Paul countered.

“Yeah, how long is it going to be before I get to do this for real?”

“The prototype won't be finished for another month.”

“Damn.” Tony said, feeling impatient to have his first flight. Sighing he went on, “Okay so shall we run through it again?”

***

Over the next month the ship gradually took form. Once it had been completed a robot truck came and carried it to the space elevator, which then carried it up to the Anderson space station. Later that day the project heads gathered in the conference room to go over the plans. Anne remained at the back of the meeting room, letting Paul handle the meeting.

“Okay so the schedule is, tomorrow we'll have the first test run.” Paul explained, “Nothing too serious, just enough to get a feel for how everything is working. Then next week we'll try to break the light barrier.” Noticing that Tony had his hand raised Paul said, “Yes?”

“Why can't we make the attempt tomorrow?”

“Because a lot of the systems are untested. I don't want to be trying something like attempting to break the light barrier when we haven't even flown the ship yet.” Tony didn't argue this point but he didn't look happy about it. “Well then launch will be at twelve hundred hours tomorrow.”

***

Tony climbed into the cockpit of the space ship and went over the systems check. He was happy to finally be flying the new ship even if this was just going to be a dry run. The fact that his girlfriend, Crystal, had been very impressed by the news had helped with that. He smiled as he remembered how she had listened with quiet awe as he explained about all the work he would have to do to ensure the dry run was a success.

After listening to all the preflight checks he activated the launch sequence. The docking bay doors were opened and the ship was lowered out into space. Then as Tony activated the navigation engines the clamps holding it in place let go and the ship started away from the station. As the station receded into the distance he said, “I just hope that this works.” Waiting for the instruction to start the primary engine.

***

The next day they had another conference. “During the test run all the systems seemed to be running as expected.” Paul explained, “Both the power output by the generators and the field being created by the engines were what was predicated by our models.”

“Does this mean we can go ahead with the attempt?” Tony asked.

“Yes. We will go ahead as planned.”

“Excellent,” Tony crowed.

“Of course before that we'll need to go over the ship and see how everything was affected by the test run.”

***

The inspection showed that nothing had been affected by the test, so they were able to continue with the attempt the following week. So Tony once again found himself in the cockpit ready to launch, “Okay I'm releasing the grapples.” Tony said. He then began to fly away from the space station, following the same course as he did during the trial run. Once he was far enough away he activated the primary engine. He watched in satisfaction as the speed reading rose rapidly towards the speed of light.

***

Katherine sat in the control room trying to keep out of the way. She didn't have anything to do so she was just watching the attempt from the sidelines. Out of curiosity she decided to look at the data for the engines to see how well it matched the simulations. She was alarmed to see a feedback loop building up within the engine. Some quick calculations told her that before long the engine would tear itself apart. Activating the radio she quickly said, “Abort the mission, repeat, abort the mission.”

***

Tony couldn't believe what he was hearing, he was so close to breaking the light barrier. However he had been trained to respond immediately to an abort command so as soon as he heard it he hit the button to shut down the engine.

***

“Okay, who just gave the abort command?” The flight controller asked, looking round the room.

For a while no one moved, then Katherine stood up slowly and raising a hand she said, “Uh, that would be me.”

This is so exciting! :applause

The Sandra/Katherine banter is great, as always. The line about the hat made me grin. The 'should it be engulfed in flames like that?' line made me laugh out-loud :lmao

The I/DLC reference was really witty too. You're always so dry-witted, clever, and entertaining as an author. I'm jealous.

A feedback resonance in the motor, eh? That sure sounds like it could lead to catastrophic failure. Good think that Katherine's on-the-ball. I was worried that she wouldn't be able to relay the warning in time. I was also worried that Tony would be too drunk with glory to obey. Great bit of suspense there.

A lot of time passed during this installment, and I never felt like we were skipping anything. It's like a quote from a noted writer (can't remember his name, just his words) -- "I try not to write the parts that people skip over." :lol

Good show, Justin! I can't wait to see the first successful mission.

Hey Justin,

Think I'm a couple chapters behind with feedback. Oops, sorry.

I'm really enjoying this story. SQ has so many great things to say, I'll just add my personal two-cents. Loving it!!!

So, after a relatively smooth run, the crew hit the first "bump." Intersting time to do it. The "abort" command made me think of the pilot for SpaceshipOne (I think that's what it's called) who recently ignored the abort order and won his team the $10 million X-Prize.

Great work Justin. Look forward to more. And can I just add, I'm amazed at how quickly you get your updates out. You take a course in speed thinking, (and typing).

Thanks. I really enjoy writing the repartee between Sandra and Katherine, and it's good to know other people enjoy reading it :) Though really it's just a matter of sticking those two together and transcribing everything they say.

To be honest I didn't even think about Tony not obeying quicly enough. My thought was that on all test ships there's a big red button and the first things that test pilots learn is that when they hear the word abort, they don't think, they just hit that button.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Patches: Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it :)

Yeah, this is the first difficulty they've had. I didn't know that the pilot of Spaceship one ignored an abort command. Well as I pointed out to StrangeQuark, the pilots at the Mars Space Agency are better trained than that.

Well the reason I'm able to get the updates out so quickly is that the stories already been written (I wrote it as part of the National Novel Writing Month last year, which is about to start again) so I'm just having to go through and edit it.

Chapter 5 – Accusations and recriminations

“Earlier today Mars security personnel stopped a meat wagon carrying genetically engineered women who were to be sold into prostitution on the Jovian colonies. Using a new EM based weapon they were able to disable the ship before they even detected the security ship. This prevented the ships crew from being able to jettison their cargo. There were fifty women in stasis in the wagon. Most disturbing was the fact that half of them had been genetically altered so that their apparent age wouldn't go above ten years. Investigators are now going over the ship to try to determine where the ship had come from.”

“So I was just a few seconds away from breaking the light barrier when that bitch made me abort the mission.” Tony was lying in bed with Crystal, who was resting her head on his chest. She was tall, attractive woman who had long blonde hair and an almost permanently bored expression. “I just don't know why she did it.”

“Maybe she wanted some attention.“ Crystal suggested moving to look up at Tony's face.

“Yeah well she's certainly gotten that.” Tony sighed, “We didn't get on too well when we met, maybe she was trying to get back at me. I just hope she isn't allowed in the control room when we make the next attempt.”

“When will that be?”

“I don't know, there'll have to be an investigation into what happened this time. God damn her.”

Crystal turned and began kissing his shoulder before saying, “Don't worry, you'll break the light barrier, and there's nothing that that gene freak can do to stop you.”

Tony sat up a little, knocking Crystal. “What did you call her?”

“Gene freak. She's bioengineered."

“How do you know that?”

Crystal looked surprised, “It's pretty obvious. I'm surprised that you didn't know.”

“Yeah well I guess it explains a lot.” He lay back down and Crystal moved her arm across his chest. “I wonder if Paul knows. He doesn't generally like people like that.”

***

The next day Paul had just sat down and was about to start working when Katherine sat down next to him. “So just how much trouble am I in?”

“I don't think you're going to be in any trouble.” Paul said, trying to sound reassuring. “I mean if you thought there was something wrong with the mission then it was right to abort it.”

Katherine began to look hopeful. Ever since the day of the test she had been worrying about her decision to abort it. She couldn't help worrying that she had misread the readings from the engine somehow, or had just acted prematurely. “So would you have done the same thing?”

Paul sighed, he'd been afraid that she'd ask him that. However he fel't it best to give an honest answer so he said, “Honestly, if I had been sitting in your position and seen what you had seen, then no I wouldn't have done what you did.”

“Oh.” Katherine started worrying again. If Paul didn't agree with her decision then what chance was there that the people doing the inquiry would.

“But that doesn't mean I would have been right.” Paul said, trying to encourage Katherine.

Katherine nodded, “I guess we'll have to wait for the preliminary report.”

***

Katherine was alternately going over the readout for the test and what she was going to say to the hearing. She glanced up as paul approached her desk.

"They want to speak to you now."

Nodding Katherine got up and started to the meeting room.

"Katherine, it'll be okay." Paul said.

Smiling slightly Katherine said, "Thanks." Taking a breath she went to the meeting.

***

When she had come out of the interview Katherine told Paul she was going for lunch. She then called up Sandra and asked to meet her.

Meeting Katherine at a nearby restaurant Sandra said, "I take it it didn't go well."

Katherine shook her head. They went to sit down at a table and Katherine said, "They think I made a mistake, that I shouldn't have aborted the mission."

"Did they say that?"

"No, they didn't say anything, but I could tell. They think that I panicked over nothing."

Sandra hesitated a moment before saying, "Um, I hate to say this but... Well is it possible..." Sandra stopped starting to wish she hadn't started this.

"What? That I was just imagining their disapproval?" Katherine shook her head, "That's the worse thing, I don't know."

Sandra reached over and took Katherine's hand, "Well what is the worse that can happen? I mean if they do decide you make a mistake. Surely they realise it's better to waste a test than to lose a ship, not to mention the pilot."

"Yeah, your right." Katherine started to relax a little but then looked worried again, "At least I hope so."

***

It took a week for the investigation team to produce a preliminary report. When Katherine read it she gave a shout of joy then went to call Sandra.

“The report says that if the mission had gone ahead there's a seventy five percent chance that the engine would have exploded.”

“So they agree with your decision to abort it?”

“Yes. It commends me for my quick thinking in saving the prototype and pilot.”

“Well it's good that you're off the hook and that they recognised how you save the project.” Sandra thought that after all the stress that Katherine had had to go through with the inquiry and having her judgement questioned she deserved a lot more than that, but didn't say anything as she didn't want to ruin the moment for Katherine.

Katherine sobered a little at Sandra's words. “I'm off the hook for aborting the mission but not for helping design an engine that doesn't work.”

Sandra nodded her agreement though she hoped that now the inquiry would focus on finding the problem and fixing it rather than just pinning blame on someone. “Oh, so what's going to happen with that?”

“Well we need to find out what the problem is then if it's something that can be fixed, or if it's an intrinsic problem with the engine design.”

“I'm sure you'll be able to fix it. I mean there are bound to be hiccups with a project like this.”

“Thanks and you're right. I mean when they were working up to the moon landings the crew of one of the Appollo rockets was killed in a fire but they still made it to the moon.” Katherine glanced at her watch, “Well I'd better get going. I just thought you would want to know after I've been going on about this for so long.”

***

As Katherine was approaching the Mars Space Agency building the next day she was stopped by Paul who quickly ran to catch up with her. When he reached her he said, “I read the report last night it. I guess was a good thing that it was you who saw those figures and not me. Thanks. I mean Tony can be a jerk at times but I'm glad he didn't get blown up.”

“Right. Well now we just have to figure out what went wrong.”

“Yeah. Any ideas?”

“At the moment, no.”

As they were walking to their office they were approached by Tony, who was looking very angry. “Hey, what do you think you were playing at?”

“Excuse me?” Katherine said, not sure how to respond. After the report had come out , while Katherine hadn't really hoped for any gratitude from Tony, she had hoped that he would stop acting as if she had stopped the attempt just to spite him.

“You just better not mess up my second flight.” Tony went on.

Paul decided to intervene and moving between them he asked, “Did you read the report?”

“Yes I read it.” Tony sounded as though having read it, he didn't believe it.

“Then what is your problem?” Paul was mystified by the way that Tony was behaving. “She saved your life.”

“Yeah, I might have known you'd stand up for her. Some friend.”

“What the hell does that mean?” Paul almost shouted, growing angry at the way Tony was acting.

Without answering Tony turned and stalked off.

Paul turned to Katherine, “I'm sorry about that.”

“I can understand him being disappointed but that seemed to be a little extreme.”

“Yeah, I really don't know what's gotten into him.” Paul decided they needed to put the incident behind them so he said, “Well come on, we've got work to do.”

***

Later that day Paul had a meeting with Anne so that they could go over the problem and how to fix it. “So as far as we can tell it seems to be an anomaly that comes into effect when the ship reaches high speeds. It must be caused by something that we didn't consider when we were creating the simulations.”

“Okay. The real question is can it be fixed and how long?”

“We won't know that till we know what the root cause is.”

“Well I need an answer soon. Simon is already working on convincing the council to scrap the project and go with his design.”

“They wouldn't scrap all the work we've done, so far would they?” Paul didn't sound as though he believed that.

“They don't want to but the longer we go without answers the easier it'll be for him to convince them.” The door buzzer sounded, “Come in.”

Katherine came in and said, “Hi. Sorry to interrupt but I think I have an answer to the malfunction.”

“Go on.”

“Um, well, the thing is, well.”

Noticing that she seemed to be hesitating Anne said, “If you made a mistake it's okay, you won't get in trouble.”

“It isn't me that I'm worried about.”

“If I've made a mistake then I want to hear about it.” Paul said.

“Okay you see I couldn't figure out what had caused the feedback loop so as a last resort I went over the flight logs.” She handed Anne the computer pad she was holding, “See just after activating the primary engine Tony switched off the dampeners on the power grid. This allowed a power surge which triggered the feed back loop.”

Anne handed the computer to Paul, “Does that sound right?”

Paul looked at it a moment trying to work out what would happen as a result of the circumstances that Katherine had just described, “Yeah this would cause the symptoms we saw. I should have thought of it.” Even as he said it Paul knew that the reason why he hadn't thought of it was that in all the time he had known Tony the pilot had never made a mistake like that before. Then again he had never know Tony to behave the way he had earlier.

“So it was pilot error.” When Paul nodded Anne switched on her com system and said, “Tony Gillis will you come to my office please.”

He swaggered in a few minutes later saying, “Hiya boss lady, what's up?”

“When you were flying the test run did you do anything out of the ordinary? That you didn't do during the simulations?” Anne asked.

“No. I went through everything just as I was trained to.” Tony didn't understand why he was being asked this. Then, noticing that Katherine was there he began to wonder if she was somehow trying to set him up to take the fall for this.

“So you didn't switch off the circuit dampers?”

Tony felt his blood run cold as he realised that his earlier supposition had been correct. They were going to make out that he had done something wrong. He hoped that he would be able to convince Anne otherwise, but given their history he wasn't sure about that. “No, why would I?”

“We have reason to believe you did and that that was what caused the malfunction.”

“That's bullshit. I did no such thing. Paul tell her I don't make mistakes.” Paul handed him the flight log. Without looking at it Tony threw it on the desk then turning to Katherine he shouted, “You did this didn't you? You've set me up...”

“Pilot, that will be all.” Anne ordered in an apparently calm voice.

“But...”

“That will be all.” Anne repeated hitting a button to open her office door.

Tony spun round and stormed out.

Anne returned her attention to Paul and Katherine asking, “So what are we going to do?”

“I suggest I fly the next attempt. I don't think Tony can be trusted to handle it.”

“You?” Katherine asked, not seeming to believe this idea.

“Yeah. I'm a qualified pilot plus I know the design.”

“Okay then. I'll need to run this by the council. We may not even get another attempt.”

***

As Paul was leaving Anne's office he found Tony waiting for him. Before Paul could say anything Tony demanded, “So what's going to happen?”

“Hopefully we'll be allowed to make another attempt.”

“Good," Tony smiled starting to look relieved, "then I'll show you I didn't mess up.”

Paul shook his head, “I'll be flying it.”

“You? Great so you're taking that gene freaks word over mine.”

Paul had been starting to turn away, but turned back when he heard this, “What?”

“You do know that Katherine was bioengineered?"

“Come off it. I know you don't like her but couldn't you come up with something a little better?”

Tony stared at Paul in amazement for a moment, “You didn't know? How could you not know that about one of your staff?”

“I read her file it wasn't there.”

“Yeah, well I'm telling you she's one of them.”

“Stop saying that.”

“But...”

Finally losing his temper with Tony Paul shouted, “Just get out of my sight.”

***

At first Paul wanted to dismiss Tony's claims about Katherine but as his mind kept going back to it he realised that it would explain a few things, like how clever she was. He got out the records that Anne had sent him and looked over Katherine's file. There was no mention of Katherine being bioengineered. He smiled to himself, thinking he should have known that Tony would say anything to turn him against Katherine. Then he felt a little guilty about having to check, He knew Katherine and was friends with her, so he should have known that she wasn't a gene freak. But then as the afternoon went on he started having doubts again. It occurred to him that the files he had received might have been altered somehow. In fact knowing how he felt about bioengineered people it was the sort of thing that Anne would do. Quickly accessing the copy of Katherine's records stored on the agency computers he was dismayed to find out that Tony had been right after all. Katherine had been bioengineered. Putting his computer away he went to find her.

***

Katherine was just filing away copies of the report she had made when a voice asked, “Why didn't you tell me?”

Katherine turned to Paul, “Tell you what?”

“You were bioengineered.”

“Maybe because I don't go up to people and say Hi I'm Katherine, I was created as part of an experiment into genetic engineering. It's not a secret I just don't announce it everyone. I mean you never said you were a pilot.”

Paul couldn't believe that Katherine was trying to make a connection between these two things, “That's different.”

“Oh, of course. Anyway why didn't you know, it's in my record.”

“The copy I was given had been altered.”

Katherine laughed at this, her tone sour, “Oh, are you going to blame me for that too?”

“No it was Anne who did that.”

Katherine was looking more and more confused by the conversation,“So what is the big deal?”

“The big deal is this changes everything. You're not a real person, you're just something that was created in a lab.”

For a moment she didn't seem to believe what she was hearing, “Well I see why Anne altered my record.”

“I don't think that I can work with you any more.”

“Well it seems there was something you forgot to mention to me. You never..." For a moment Katherine couldn't go on. Recovering herself she continued, "You never said that you were a bigot.” Without saying anything else Katherine turned and left.

When she had gone Paul stayed where he was, a little dumbfounded by Katherine's words. He had always thought that his dislike of bioengineered people was based on reasonable evidence. He certainly never thought of himself as being a bigot. However having Katherine call him one and pain on her face as she had said it did make him wonder if he had been wrong all along.

***

After speaking to Paul, Tony had gone straight home, not seeing any reason to stick around. He had tried to call Crystal but she hadn't been in, so he left a message asking her to come and see him. Crystal arrived an hour later and Tony explained what had happened.

“I can't believe they're not letting you fly the next attempt.” Crystal said when Tony had finished.

“Yeah, it's all because of that bitch.”

“Well there is one good thing. If the same thing happens they'll know that it wasn't your fault.”

At first Tony didn't know what she meant but after a while he realised that since it was a problem with the engine the same thing would happen again. “Yeah, you're right.” He was just starting to feel hopeful when Crystal frowned, as if thinking of something, “What is it?”

“Well you said this Katherine wants to get you in trouble. What if she did something to the engine? She could fix it now so that it would look like it was your fault.”

“Why would she do something like that? I barely know her.”

“Well who knows why they do anything? People like her, they're not right in the head. They're all psychopaths.”

Tony nodded, of course everyone knew that, “It's makes you wonder why they're allowed on the streets.”

“Yeah well that's because we have a government that spends too much time listening to liberal lobby groups who don't care about the dangerous criminals who are being allowed to roam the streets. Anyway that doesn't help you with your problem. Now if she did sabotage your attempt, it's obvious what you have to do.”

Man, Jupiter’s one twisted planet-- Creepy gas-giant-dwelling freaks…

Whap! A twist… From the least likely of sources—a new character. ‘Gene-freak’ Love it… Great vernacular! Fantastic plot/character development!

When Tony confronted Paul and Katherine, I was SO expecting him to make a comment about Katherine’s freaky genes. Yet he just slipped away… That’s an interesting way to play with my expectations. I like.

You deferred the delivery of the Whap! and kept it a two-person scene, out of Katherine’s sight. Excellent…

A dark note to end on. What will Tony do? How far will he go? She’s not a real person in his eyes… He’d be doing society a favor…

Great update, Justin!

Well Jupiter is a rather lawless place, mainly due to it being so far from the inner planets.

I'm glad you liked the way I handled the revelation of Katherine's secret. :)

Indeed, how far will he go?

Thanks for the feedback

Chapter 6 – Test flight 2

“Today is the fifth anniversary of the amendment to the law allowing bioengineered people to marry. This has been controversial ever since the bill was passed. In a press conference the Martian president had the following to say,

'There have been many calls for the amendments allowing bioengineered people to marry to be recinded, however this will never happen. The right of two people to show their commitment to each other through marriage is a fundamental right that applies to all humans. To restrict who can and cannot marry on the basis of nothing more than prejudice doesn't strengthen marriage, but in fact weakens it.'

There will be full coverage of the speech later today.”

***

When Paul got back to his office he found there was a message from his wife. Wondering what was wrong he quickly played it. She said that Alex had cut himself again and that she had taken him to the hospital. As soon as the message had finished Paul switched on the communicator and called her back.

“Oh Paul, I'm glad that you've called.”

“Have you heard anything.”

“No. They've done a load of tests and now they just keep telling me that they're waiting for the results.”

“Okay. I'm going to come right over. I'll be there in about half an hour.”

“Okay then.”

Paul switched off the communicator then after shutting everything down he raced to the car park.

***

After leaving Paul, Katherine wanted to go back to her work to forget about the argument, but instead she found herself calling Sandra. When Sandra answered Katherine explained about her argument with Paul, “And that's what he said?” Sandra glanced down, her expression dark, “That you're not a real person?”

Katherine nodded, “Exactly that.”

Sandra took a breath, seemingly trying to calm herself, “I, uh don't know what to say. He seemed like a nice guy.”

“Yeah I'm having trouble believing it as well. I seem to be going through a thing where people who I thought were friends turn out not to be.” She glanced at Sandra a moment, “You're really angry, aren't you?”

“Well yes. I wouldn't take that sort of rubbish from my parents and I'm not going to take it from him.” Sandra again seemed to be struggling to calm herself. Finally she said, “You know he's wrong though, right? It doesn't matter how you were born, you're still a wonderful, loving person.”

Katherine smiled a little and said, “Thanks. I knew that I could count on you to cheer me up.”

“Hey it's what I'm here for.”

Katherine nodded, then frowned again, “Well it looks like I'm off the project.”

“What? But it was your idea. If anyone should go it should be Mr. Bigot not you.”

“Maybe but it's his engine and there's the fact they had a relationship.”

“Do you think that Anne would base her decision on that?”

“I don't know. I better be going. I'll talk to you tonight when I get home.”

***

When Paul reached the hospital he rushed to his son's room. As he went in Karen came over and hugged him.

Paul looked over at Alex, who was asleep, “Have you heard anything?”

“No. They're still waiting for the test results.” Almost as soon as she had said this the door opened and a doctor came in. “Doctor, this is my husband Paul.”

“Hello Mr Philips.” The doctor said, “We have finished our tests and I'm afraid that your son has Ashcroft syndrome.”

“Oh god.” Paul said.

“Now we've caught it very early. We believe that with the proper treatment your son will make a full recovery.”

Paul nodded, not really believing that this was happening.

“When will you be able to start the treatments?” Karen asked.

“We need to run a few more tests to determine the best course of action then we'll begin the treatment the day after tomorrow.”

***

When Katherine got to work the next day she was expecting to have a major fight but when she saw the tired, sad expression on Paul's face she felt the wind go from her sails. So instead of attacking Paul about what he had said the day before she asked, “Is something wrong?”

Paul nodded, “We just found out that Alex has Ashcroft syndrome.”

“Oh god, I'm so sorry.” Katherine said, forgetting all of her anger with Paul, “Can they treat it?”

“The doctors think so.”

“Is there anything that I can do?”

“No, thanks. Well I won't be doing the test run. Which is a shame as it would be better if it were someone who knows the engine. In case something comes up.”

“What about me?”

Paul had been going through the lists of test pilots working for the agency. As Katherine's words sunk in he looked up in shock, “I didn't think you were a pilot.”

“I'm not, but I could be by tomorrow.”

“Okay then. Well let's see what Anne says.”

***

After spending the next day training herself to be a pilot Katherine then spent the week aferwards on the simulator proving she would be able to handle the ship. On one of those days Tony dropped by the simulator room. Seeing Katherine in there he asked the technician, “What's she doing?”

“She's going to be making the flight.”

“What's up with Paul?”

“Some kind of family emergency.”

“Oh.” As Tony left he could barely contain his excitement. Not only would he be vindicated but the bitch would be shown up as well. Not only that but this solved a problem he had been having. Despite Crystal's reassurances, Tony had been worried that something might go wrong and Paul might be hurt, but with Katherine making the flight he needn't worry. After all, who would care if there was one less gene freak around.

***

Katherine sat in the cockpit of the ship feeling very nervous. A part of her couldn't believe that she was doing this. She rarely even drove a car so a part of her kept asking why she thought that she would be able to fly a space ship, even after all the time in the simulator. In order to calm her nerves a little she decided to run through a diagnostic check. Almost immediately she discovered a problem. There was a fault in one of the control circuits. Deactivating it she brought on line one of the backups and reran the diagnostics. Finding that the problem had gone she began trying to work out what would have happened if the circuit had malfunctioned during the flight.

***

In the control room Anne was sitting in the same spot that Katherine had during the last trial. She had the terminal showing the same readings as Katherine had, just in case they had the same problem.

“I'm activating the primary engine now.” Katherine's voice came over the radio. Anne kept her eyes on the engine readings. It was only when she heard Katherine say, “I'm shutting off the engine now.” That she realised she had been holding her breath.

A minute later the controller said, “Your speed was one point one three times the speed of light.” The room erupted with cheering.

Over all the noise they heard Katherine shout, “Who's da lady?”

“Well she always was rather excitable.” Anne explained to the others. Then turning on the com unit she said into it, “Katherine you are most definitely da lady.”

***

In order to get her mind off worrying about Katherine's test run Sandra had gone to visit Alex in hospital. She was still angry at Paul for what he had said to Katherine but she she wasn't going to hold that against either Alex or Karen.

Seeing Sandra come in Karen smiled and said, “Hello. Paul has just popped out for a little bit.”

“That's okay.” Sandra was relieved to hear this as she wasn't sure how she would react if she saw Paul. Sandra found a vase and put the flowers she had brought into it. “So how is he?”

“The first round of treatments went well. The doctors think he can come home next week.” Karen indicated on of the seats opposite her saying, “Sit please.”

Sandra did so, “That's good.”

“Though he'll have to keep having treatments for at least a few more years.”

“Yeah...” She stopped as her phone rang. “Sorry.” Sandra got up and went outside the room to answer. After a few minutes she came back in and she said, “That was Katherine the attempt was a success.”

“So she broke the light barrier?”

“Yes.”

“Well Paul will be happy about that.”

“Um yeah, I guess.”

“Is something wrong?”

Not wanting to get into a discussion about the argument between Paul and Katherine, Sandra said, “No, nothing.” She glanced at her watch, she wanted to meet up with Katherine and avoid meeting Paul if possible so she said, “I better get going. I hope the treatments go well.”

***

The next day Katherine went to find Tony. Seeing her he said, “What's up? Come to gloat.”

Katherine was a little taken aback by this greeting and wondered if she was making a mistake by coming here. Gathering her courage she said, “Uh, no. I came to apologise.”

Tony didn't know what she was playing at but he told himself that whatever it was he wasn't going to fall for it, “Why's that?”

“Well you see it turns out there was a fault in the one of control circuits. It was most likely that which caused the dampers to shut down. So I'm sorry. If I had checked more thoroughly then I would have realised that it wasn't your fault.”

Tony decided he'd heard enough of this and without answering he got up and left.

***

The following week the Agency had a party to celebrate their success. Everyone from the department, and from a few others were there. After mingling with the executives a while Anne went to find Paul and his wife. “Hello, I'm glad you were able to come.”

“For a little while at least.”

“How is your son?”

“He's getting better. We won't know for sure until a few more treatments but the doctors are optimistic.”

“That's good. Well if you need to take any time off then let me know.”

“So I guess you're not up for a promotion then.” Karen put in.

Anne gave her a puzzled look, but didn't say anything.

“Actually I think that now that the prototypes done I'm going to return to retirement. You don't really need my help any more.”

“Well we could still use your expertise.” Anne said.

“Why? Katherine knows about as much as I do and with her abilities I'm sure she'll be a better choice to run the project.”

It took a moment for Anne to work out what Paul was getting at, “Oh, so you found out.”

“Did you really think I wouldn't?”

“Well I was hoping that if you got to know Katherine before finding out, you wouldn't judge her on that alone.” Anne shrugged, she had never been able to understand the prejudice Paul had against bioengineereds. She knew that one time he had gone for a job and it had seemed that he was going to get it but the job had instead gone to someone who was bioengineered but that didn't seem to justify the depth of his feelings,.“I guess that I was wrong.”

“Found out what?” Karen asked. She knew that Katherine and Paul had fallen out but not the reason. She had assumed that it was a disagreement about engineering, but from the way they were talking but now wasn't so sure.

“Katherine's a gene...” Paul stopped as he noticed Anne's expression. He remembered how she had once almost fired someone after overhearing some one using that phrase. “She was bioengineered.” Paul finished.

“So?”

“So, she's not really human.”

“How do you figure that? My origins aren't exactly orthodox, what with the whole having two fathers and no mother thing, so does that mean that I'm not really human?”

“That's different,” Paul argued. He had the horrible feeling that he was being argued into a corner. This was worsened by the fact that he knew that his feelings about Katherine weren't exactly rationale, but he couldn't help them.

“How?”

“Well they weren't trying to create some kind of genetically superior master race.”

“Now you're just being silly. I mean okay so I'm not sure I like the way they manipulate nature to create people who are designed for a certain role but that isn't Katherine's fault, nor does it make her any less of a person.”

Noticing that people were starting to turn to stare at the arguing couple Anne said, “Maybe this isn't the place to have this discussion.”

“You stay out of it.” Karen snapped.

“Okay.” Anne decided to leave them to it. Seeing Katherine and Sandra she muttered to herself, “I wonder if I can go two for two.”

“So he didn't even respond.” Sandra said after Katherine had told her about her last meeting with Tony.

“Nope he just got up and left. And I was trying really hard to apologise to him.”

“Well maybe he knew it was still partly his fault.”

“But it was a system problem.”

“Which you found. Maybe if he had been more careful he would have found the problem and fixed it.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

“I would wonder why Paul's friends with him.” Almost as soon as she had said this a reason occurred to Sandra, “Except he isn't the great person I thought he was.“

“Nah, Paul's okay. Apart from the whole hating me just because of how I was conceived thing. Anyway I think that Tony's being extra jerk like at the moment. From talking to other people in the agency I get the impression that he was always a bit full of himself but never as bad as he had been lately. I don't know why he's changed.”

“I think that I do.”

“Yeah?” Katherine wondered how Sandra could know anything about Tony when she hadn't met him.

Sandra pointed at Tony and Crystal who were at the other side of the room. “I bet it's something to do with the skank that's hanging from his arm and eying up everyone in the room.”

Katherine looked round at them and said in a dismissive tone, “I don't know what he sees in her.”

“Neither do I. Though conversely I don't know what she sees in him either.”

“So you wouldn't sleep with him? I mean if you weren't married to me.”

Sandra screwed up her face in disgust, “Not if he were the last man on Mars.” She thought about that statement for a moment then added, “And there were no women.”

“Well that's...” Katherine stopped as she saw Tony and Crystal approaching, “Oh oh.”

“Hi.” Crystal said, smiling brightly, “You must be Katherine.”

“Uh, yeah and this is my wife, Sandra.” Sandra just nodded in greeting, not feeling like talking to either of them.

“Tony here has told me so much about you.” She looked Katherine up and down then said, “I see that it was all true.”

“Uh, neat.” Katherine said, guessing that it can't have been good.

At that point Anne approached them saying, “Katherine, as you're the woman of the moment there are a few people I'd like you to meet.” She then led Katherine and Sandra away.

Tony and Crystal walked off to one side of the room. Tony started to say something but Crystal stopped him. She whispered a few words and Tony nodded. Walking off he grabbed an empty bottle from a table. Walking up behind Katherine he smashed it over the back of her head. A moment later he was knocked back as someone came flying into him. Through the flurry of blows he could just about make out Sandra. A group of people came over and dragged her off of him. Some more grabbed him to stop him from retaliating.

Sandra shouted, “Get the fuck off of me.” Shaking them off she ran over to Katherine. “Katherine, darling are you okay.” She felt her blood run cold when she saw that Katherine was unconscious. She began to calm a little when she checked Katherine's throat and found that she had a strong pulse but the amount of blood coming from Katherine's head, worried her.

“I've called for an ambulance.” Anne said, looking up at Tony she added, “And the police.”

A short distance away Crystal watched the scene with a mixture of amusement and satisfaction.

***

Katherine was rushed to the nearest hospital where her wounds were taken care of. A scan showed that she hadn't suffered a concussion from the blow so they just needed to clean the wound and spray it with fake skin. Once Katherine had been treated Sandra was allowed to see her. “So how are you feeling?”

“Sore.” Katherine answered, “And a little pissed off.”

“I can understand that. God what a shit.” Sandra said, gesturing angrily.

Before she could say any more there was a knock at the door, “Come in.”

Karen and Alex entered, “Is it okay for us to come in?” Sandra asked.

“Sure.” Katherine said, then to Alex, “So how are you?”

“Sore.” Alex answered.

“You and me both.” Katherine sympathised.

Alex turned to his mother, “Why is Kathy in hospital?”

“Because a bad man decided to hurt her.” Karen answered.

Alex frowned as he considered this, “Why?”

“That's a good question.” Sandra said.

Alex didn't look as though he was going to accept this.

“Uh, can I come in?” They turned to see Paul standing in the doorway.

“Sure.” Katherine answered.

“I'm sorry about what happened tonight.”

“It's not your fault.”

“Yeah well I'm also sorry about the stuff I said earlier.”

“It's okay.”

“Well not really. I was being a total git. I should have seen that no matter how you were conceived and born you're still the same person but I didn't, I'm sorry for that.”

“You're forgiven.” Katherine said and Sandra nodded her agreement.

“Thanks.”

***

Karen, Alex and Paul stayed with Katherine for about an hour before deciding they needed to get Alex, who looked like he was about to fall asleep, to bed. As they were driving back Karen said, “I'm glad that you've come around about Katherine.”

“Well I thought about what you had said and I realised that you were right.”

“Really?” Karen wasn't sure whether they believed this. They were both very stubborn, which made for some very long arguments. “Well I guess there's a first time for everything.”

“Hey, I often listen to you.”

“Right. So it wasn't just due to Katherine getting hit round the back of the head?”

“Not just because of that.” Paul admitted. Seeing Katherine laid out with blood pouring out of the back of her head he had been sure that she was dead and he had suddenly realised how stupid every he had said to her had been.

“Well I know you get on well with Tony but I don't want that man round the house ever again.”

“I don't think that I do either, to be honest.” Paul shook his head, trying to work out what had happened to his friend to change him so much, “I don't know what's going on with him, he was never like this before.”

Tony’s a homophobe. Not the cockamamie, misused vernacular definition… The literal one-- He fears his own kind. Why else would he hate gene-freaks with such voracity?

Katherine’s a Test Pilot now. Katherine’s been purpose-engineered. Maybe that’s the case with Tony too? She’s more and more like Tony all the time. Maybe their converging similarities go down to the bio-chemical level? Could Tony have told Paul about Katherine in order to draw attention away from his own origins, maybe spending his whole life trying to keep them secret? It would make Tony an interesting character to say the least.

That’s my theory right now.

You got me thinking with this one :) Good job!

On a style note, you should reconsider the sudden and brief nature of Katherine’s heroic breaking of the light barrier. It should be a big moment for her, and the people of Mars, and I didn’t really get pulled into that belief of experience. I can understand why you kept things terse in here, since it’s a NaNoWriMo effort, but this was an important moment that really shrank from too little scene and too much summary. Just my observation. I’m an incredible fan of dramatic scenes… But so are most readers.

I like the echo returning from the start of the story—Alex and his syndrome. Good job with that. We knew it could happen, and eventually, it did. That’s a great unifying tactic.

Marriage, and who’s allowed to practice it are still under fire in the future… No surprise. I have a coworker who insists that marriage is for the sole purpose of procreation. I posed to her, “So then infertile people shouldn’t be allowed to marry?” She stammered, waving her hands in little circles. I added, “What about the elderly? They can’t reproduce. No marriage for them either, right?” She left the room. She couldn’t take the logic. I have that effect on people…

I bring this up because of Karen’s refutation and challenge to Paul’s irrationality. She posed the same questions and mentioned the same points that I would have in the same situation. As a writer, you’ve given the reader a great affirmation with a strong delivery. That’s a fantastic way to ‘speak’ through a story. Bravo!

Great stuff, Justin. Looking forward to more!

Logic? What's that? :lmao I'm firmly convinced that all American children should be required to take at least one logic class before they reach college. The logic you presented to your co-worker wouldn't seem so far-fetched to her if she understood how to formulate a proper argument :eyebrow

It's certainly an interesting theory. Tony has been hiding the fact he was bioengineered for so long that this has grown into self hatred, hatred which he is now directing at Katherine.

Quote:

That's a good point. It is all over before it's even started. I'll look at that scene again.

The thing about prejudice is that it's inherently illogical. So when faced with logical arguments the only choices are to ignore the argument or to get rid of the prejudice. In the story, now that he's started to realise how illogical his biophobic prejudices are, Paul is going to take the latter course.

Quote:
I bring this up because of Karen’s refutation and challenge to Paul’s irrationality. She posed the same questions and mentioned the same points that I would have in the same situation.

I'm glad you liked Karen's argument. Actually they were based on thoughts I had while reading your story.

Thanks for the indepth commenting :)

Kieli: That's a good point.

So what do you think of the story?

Yikes, it's been quite a while since I last updated this.

Basically I had an idea for a new chapter, but then NaNoWriMo came up and after that I had trouble getting the motivation to do any writing.

Anyway I've finally finished it.

Part 2 – Construction

Chapter 7 – Interlude

The Jovian colonies have increased their calls for independence. Up till now they enjoyed a sort of unofficial independence due to the amount of time needed to reach then, but with both earth and Mars having developed translight technology they feel the need to make this independence official. However, given the lawless nature of the colonies these demands are unlikely to go unchallenged.

She was floating, yet she couldn't feel anything holding her up. Her skin was burning, yet she was extremely cold. She opened her eyes and couldn't see anything, save for a few specks of light. She tried to breath but couldn't. Her lungs burnt from the lack of air. It occurred to her that she was dying. She was going to die and she didn't even know who she was.

Crystal woke up, gasping for air, her heart pounding. She quickly worked out that she wasn't floating in the vacuum of space, but was in her room. She looked over the other side of the bed and was, for a moment, surprised to see she was alone. She almost regretted breaking up with Tony, knowing that he'd be able to comfort her now. She pushed these thoughts down. All her life she'd had to be strong to survive. She wasn't going to stop now.

***

Paul hesitated at the door to Katherine and Sandra's house. Things had seemed okay between them at the hospital, but given how he had treated Katherine, he wasn't sure how welcome he'd be. Finally deciding that he couldn't stand there all day Paul reached up and hit the door buzzer then waited. A few moments later the door was opened by Sandra. She was wearing exercise clothes and her forehead and hair were damp with perspiration.

"Hi."

Sandra just nodded.

"So is Katherine about?"

"I'm afraid not. She's gone to visit the agency."

"Oh." Paul considered what to do a moment. "Can I come in? I wanted to talk to you as well."

Sandra shrugged, "Sure. I guess so." As she let Paul in she said, "I was just working out." Sandra led Paul through to a back room, "Do you mind?" She asked indicating an exercise machine.

"No, go ahead."

Sandra got on and started working out. “So what did you want to see us about?"

"Well I realise that I've been something of a jerk lately."

Sandra replied, in a bitter tone, "You don't say."

"Well, um..." Paul stammered, a little taken aback by the response.

Not looking at Paul she went on, "You told Katherine she wasn't a real person, that goes way beyond being something of a jerk."

"You're right.” Paul glanced down as he went on, “I should never have said that to her."

"But do you believe it?" Sandra pressed.

"I... I used to. Now I honestly don't know.” Paul stopped as he tried to work out why he felt like this. Finally he said, “It's how I was brought up."

"Nice excuse."

Paul was finding it increasing hard to work out what to say, and the noise of the exercise machine wasn't helping. Reaching over he turned it off. "Sorry, but that was distracting. I didn't come here to argue with you."

"I know... It's just, you said that was how you were brought up, and that's how I was brought up as well. My parents disowned me because of Katherine. But you know, I wouldn't take that shit from them and I'm not going to take it from anyone else."

"I'm sorry."

"Yeah, well, so am I."

***

After Paul had left Sandra didn't feel like exercising any more so she went to sit down. She had barely gotten herself comfortable when someone else came to the door. When she went to answer she was surprised to find Crystal there.

"Is Katherine about?"

"I'm afraid not," Sandra answered hoping that she would leave. She then surprised herself by saying, "Do you want to come in?"

"Thanks." As they went through to the living room Crystal said, "I wanted to apologise for what happened, at the party."

"You didn't have anything to do with it."

"I know but... Tony had been drinking a lot and I keep thinking maybe I should have known something like that would happen. He was just so angry and..." Crystal seemed to stop herself.

"And what?"

"Well he was very nasty about Katherine."

"Go on."

"Well he kept going on about how she'd stolen his glory, calling her a gene freak. Not that I agree with that, I mean it doesn't matter where we come from right?"

Sandra just nodded.

"Anyway I keep thinking I should have known, done something to stop him."

"I don't think anyone expected Tony to do what he did, unless..." She studied Crystal a moment, "Has he ever been violent before?"

"No! I mean not often, he was always sorry."

Sandra moved to put her arm around Crystal, "I think that you need to get away from him. He doesn't seem to be a good person to be around."

"You're right. I think I've known this for a while, but I've been trying to convince myself I was wrong." Crystal laughed, "You know I came round to apologise. How did we end up with you comforting me?"

Sandra shrugged, "It's a funny world."

"It really is. Well I better get going."

"I'll tell Katherine you were here."

"Thanks."

***

Katherine arrived shortly after with a pile of files. Putting them on the table she started going through them,

"Paul was here earlier," Sandra said.

Not looking up, Katherine asked, "Wanted to go over the design?"

"No, actually he came to apologise for his recent behaviour."

"That's nice," Katherine said, her tone distracted.

"Yeah, well but..." Sandra hesitated, not sure how to put this.

"He hasn't completely come round,” Katherine finished, finally looking up at Sandra.

"How did you know? Have you spoken to him?"

"No. I've just been thinking about it. I mean it can be hard getting over prejudices."

"I guess.” Sandra shrugged, “I'm afraid I wasn't so magnanimous."

"Oh. This must be hard. I mean it must remind you of your father."

Sandra nodded, "Yeah.” Deciding to change the subject she went on, “There was another visitor, Crystal."

"The skankbot? what did she want?"

Sandra frowned, "Actually she seems kind of nice. She wanted to apologise about what happened."

"I didn't think she had anything to do with it."

"No, but she seemed to think she could have stopped Tony somehow."

"Well that's just silly. So we were pulling a Paul?"

"Huh?"

"I mean pre judging someone. You know when I met Crystal, I kind of got the feeling that she might be bioengineered.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, but I get the same impression from Anne and,” Katherine made a sour face, “Tony, so I guess my biodar isn't working so well.”

"Yeah, well I really doubt that Tony is, and I don't think Anne would have kept it secret from us." Sandra frowned again as she glanced at some of the files. Picking one up she read out, "Not to be taken from the building?" She looked up at Katherine, with an eyebrow raised.

"Oh well I need them for my work."

Sandra nodded, "Just as long as you don't get into trouble for it."

"Don't worry, No one really bothers about those notes."

Walking up to the door of her house Anne placed her hand on the control panel, causing the door to swing open. She was greeted by a large grey and black cat who jumped off the back of the sofa to come running up to her, meowing loudly.

“Just a moment, Tabitha,” Anne said as she hung her bag on a hook and took her coat off. Tabitha didn't seem to like being kept waiting, and made her annoyance known. “Okay, okay, I'm coming.”

After she had fed Tabitha, Anne went to check her com system. There was one message on the system which she played. The screen showed an image of herself tied to a chair and blindfolded. Someone, just out of sight, said in a monotone voice, “You have eluded justice for too long now, Anne Walker.” There was a shot and the figure in the chair toppled backwards. “Soon you will be made to pay for your betrayal.”

The screen went blank as a voice said, “There are no more messages.”

Anne stared at the screen, not quite able to believe what she'd just seen. After a while she deleted the message and walked into her study. Placing her hand on a sensor plate she opened a drawer up and took a box out. With shaking hands Anne opened the box and took a gun out. She checked the charge on it, then put it back again.

Francis Malevich, the CEO of the Malevich corporation, was one of the richest men on Luna. He was also one of the most influential. His offices were positioned to give a spectacular view of the Luna surface. Not that he noticed any of that. He was too busy writing up the local governments position on a new labour law which was being considered. He was just rereading it when the door buzzer sounded. He was about to tell the person to go away when he noticed that it was one of his daughters. Flicking a switch he opened the door up. A tall woman, with long dark hair came in.

“Samantha, what can I do for you?”

“Daddy,” Samantha started. She hesitated, looking a little nervous. “You know how you said if I wanted anything I just had to ask.”

“Of course, do you want a new car?”

Samantha hesitated again, then said in a rush, “I want to go to Alpha Centauri.”

Francis took a moment to process this, “I'm not sure that that's possible.”

“But both Earth and Mars are preparing expeditions.”

“Well okay then I'll look into it.”

Walking over Samantha kissed her father on the cheek, “Thanks daddy.” She quickly left before he could change his mind.

Saving the document Francis leant back as he considered how he was going to do this. He was determined that if there was a way then he'd find it. Not only because he made it a point of pride to give his daughters anything that they wanted, but also because having one of his daughters be on the first ship to reach Alpha Centauri would be a wonderful advertisement for his company.

Great update

Postby StrangeQuark » Tue Jan 11, 2005 7:33 pm

Wow... Anne's in some deep crap. I'm going to guess that she's had herself cloned or is a clone herself. Maybe a clone/clonee from a government establishment or something? I'll have to wait to find out.

Paul's explanation for his bigotry actually held water. Heck, there are a lot of attitudes that we carry through life that were formed during our upbringing. Sometimes, we forget altogether the reasons behind our convictions since they were firmed so long ago. I believed Paul's apology. I hope that Sandra did as well.

Crystal has me baffled. I know something's up with her, but I can't be certain yet. I had no trouble believing that Tony might have smacked her around from time to time. That was a really nice touch in your part, Justin. I think it's a natural for their relationship, given the traits and attitudes that we've seen from them so far. Great characterization.

Someone (sounds spoiled) want to go to A.C. Daddy's going to call some favors perhaps? He seems to be well-poised to make her wish come true...

Cool story. Can't wait for more.

Yeah, Anne's past is definitely catching up with her.

Yes, it can be hard to escape the attitudes we were raised to have. Sandra's just as guilty of this. Since, as was noted, part of the reason she reacted so strongly to Paul was he reminded her of her father's biophobia.

The main reason for adding in this chapter was that when reading my first draft I realised that Crystal was a rather one dimensional character, so I wanted to try to add some more depth to her. I'm glad to hear it's working :)

Chapter 8 – Work Begins

“Construction work is due to begin on the ship that will make the first manned flight to Alpha Centauri. However there is one question that has not been answered which is why? How will the average Martian benefit from this exercise? Given the current state of Mars economy this could very well end up being like the moon landings with the project being cancelled after just a few trips and before any real benefit can be gained from it. So is this really anything other than an attempt to outdo Earth?”

***

When Paul arrived for the preliminary meeting he was a little surprised by just how much the team had grown. He had known that the number of people involved would increase but he hadn't realised by just how much. They were using one of the largest lecture theatres in the building and still there were people sitting on the stairs or standing in the doorways. Resigning himself to doing the same he was just looking round for a clear spot when he noticed someone waving to him. Looking up he realised that it was Katherine, as he approached her he saw that she had saved a seat for him.

“Thanks,” He said, as he made his way past the other people on the row.

“Don't mention it.” Katherine removed her bag so that he could sit down. “There's a lot of people here.”

“Yeah. I guess that with the project being a success there are a lot of people who want to be a part of it.”

“Now that's a cynical point of view.”

“I'm a cynical person.”

Katherine was going to respond when she noticed that Anne had taken the stage. “Okay is everyone comfortable?” There were a few shouts of no from around the doorways. “Tough. As you're all aware the second test flight of the prototype was a success with the ship reaching just above the speed of light. However while this was a wonderful achievement we can't afford to take a break as the task of reaching Alpha Centauri is still going to be a difficult one. With the engine we are using it should be possible to make the journey in about a month. However getting up to those speeds will be anything other than easy.” Anne went on to go over some of the difficulties they still faced in designing the engine. She then introduced the heads of the project.

When she introduced the project head he came to the podium and said, “Thank you Anne. I will be taking charge of this project during the final phase, with Anne assisting me. As Anne said there is still a lot of work to be done and Earth is still ahead of us. They are expecting to try out a ship capable of five times the speed of light.” He then went on to go over the same things that Anne had.

Once the conference was over Katherine and Paul sat waiting to be able to leave. “I guess we're not important any more,” Katherine said.

“It was to be expected with the number of people involved now.” Paul shrugged, “Besides those people who are in charge now, they're the heads of the agency. You know what they say, rank has it privileges.”

“Whatever happened to equality?” They both got up and started towards the exit.

“We haven't quite got there yet. Besides if you feel bad how do you think Anne feels.”

“Oh yeah. Relegated to just being an assistant, that must hurt.” Glancing over at the podium she saw that Anne was talking to the department heads. As Anne looked over to her Katherine waved to her. Anne raised her hand a moment, then turned back to the others.

***

During the day both Paul and Katherine received messages asking them to go to see the new head of design Michael Philips the next day. When they got to his office Michael said, “Hello Katherine, where have you been hiding yourself away all this time?”

“Oh in the advanced research section mainly.”

“I thought that you might wind up there.“ Turning to Paul he explained, “Katherine here was working for me when she first joined the Agency. It's hard to believe that it's been five years now.”

“Yes, it seems a lot longer.” Katherine answered.

Grinning Michael said, “Katherine had been working for a small robotics company before she joined us. When she first came here she was constantly getting lost.”

“And Michael always used to tease me about it.”

Michael nodded, then returning to the present he said, “Well I guess you must both be a bit put out by the way you've been pushed to the sidelines.”

“You've got that right.” Katherine said in an annoyed tone.

“It was to be expected.” Paul added, sounding more resigned about it.

“True. However I'm going to want your input on the final design. With your experience I believe you'll both be able to help a lot.”

“Sure, we'll do what we can.” Paul said, and Katherine nodded.

“Good. Well the higher ups are pushing to get started with construction, so we won't have long for the initial design.”

“Wonderful,” Paul said in a sour tone, thinking this wouldn't be the first project to fail due to being rushed. If Anne had still been in charge he wouldn't have been too worried, but he didn't know the new guy.

“I quite agree. I'll try to keep them off our backs for as long as possible but we can't afford to drag our feet. So I suggest that we get to work.”

***

After quickly getting lunch Paul hurried to one of the conference rooms. They were going to have the first serious design meeting and Paul wanted to get there early so he'd have time to get a seat and settle in. Going through the doors he was a little surprised to see Katherine there, working on a data pad. Though as he walked over to her he realised that he probably shouldn't be.

As he sat down next to her, Katherine looked up saying, “Hi.”

“Afternoon. So what are you working on?”

“Oh I'm just going over the resources we'll have.”

“Hmm,” Paul said as he got his own pad out.

“They certainly seem to be throwing a lot into this.”

“Well this is seen as being a rather important project.”

The doors opened again and a technician came in, walking over to the large display screen at one end of the room.

“Hi,” Katherine called, waving to him.

The technician nodded, then began working on the screen.

Paul was reading over the personnel lists when he was interrupted by a squealing sound from Katherine. He looked up at her, a puzzled look on his face.

“Page ten,” Was all Katherine said.

“Okay.” Paul skipped ahead to that page and started reading. “They're setting up a new super computer grid for the project. I don't see what...” Paul stopped as he read some of the statistics for the system. “Oh my.”

“This is going to be the fastest super computer in the system,” Katherine grinned as she said this.

“Yeah. It says it'll double the performance of Deep Thought. That would certainly be impressive if they manage it.”

“That's not the best part,” Katherine spoke in a rush as she grew more excited, “Look at the next page.”

Paul moved to the next page then read out, “Using an architecture designed by Donald Thomson and Megan Reed. They're the people from your old department aren't they?”

“Yeah. One day they were talking about some of the performance problems we'd been having. The fact that adding more cells didn't give a linear increase in performance. They did some brainstorming on how to improve the scalability.”

“Yeah.”

“Well it sounded good, so I suggested that Megan write up the proposal then I filed it with the computation department. I hadn't heard anything about it till now.”

“Well I guess someone liked their ideas.”

They stopped as the doors opened and a group of people came in. Talking loudly they went to some seats and sat down, before starting to get some equipment out.

When the group had quietened a little Katherine said, “Yeah. I bet Donald and Megan are excited about this.”

“Are you going to be okay? I mean you might need to work with Megan.”

“Oh,” Katherine's face fell a litle, “I guess I'm going to need to clear the air with her.”

“Well good luck with that.”

***

A short while after everyone had arrived Michael came into the room and walked over to the screen. Facing everyone he said, “Right well we all know why we're here so I won't bore you with that. First up I have some bad news. Despite heavy opposition from myself and others the pointy haired bosses have decided that we're going to skip the scaling phase and go straight to the main ship.”

There was a lot of angry muttering at this. One man stood up and said, “But this will mean taking longer, and we'll be less likely to succeed.”

Michael raised his hands for silence. As everyone quietened down he said, “I know you're not happy about this, and I'm not either. I made all the arguments that you're making now, but it didn't make any difference. They're worried about Earth's lead and that seems to be their only concern. The fact is, the decision has been made, nothing that we say will change that. All we can do it figure out how to cope with it.”

There was still some low conversation over this, but no one challenged Michael so he said, “Right then let's get started.”

***

“The biggest problem is going to be the size of the ship. With ninety percent of the ships mass being fuel, it's still going to be a very big mother. Accelerating it to the kind of speeds that we need will not be easy.”

“Uh, I hesitate to mention this.” Katherine stood up, when Michael paused, “But there is a way to reduce the mass, though it is rather risky.”

“You have got to be kidding.” Paul said, “That would be insane.”

“Would one of you like to share what the actual idea is, for those of use who aren't part of your group mind?”

“I'll let Katherine explain it.” Paul said, chickening out.

“Well we can half the fuel requirements by just using enough fuel to reach Alpha Centauri.”

“What so they get there, but don't come back? I don't think that would be classed a success, plus it might be hard to find volunteers.”

“You might be surprised.” Katherine answered, “Besides I didn't mean that. It'll be possible for them to refuel once they reach Alpha Centauri, using the ship's fuel scoops.”

“It still sounds risky.”

“Well yes. The two main dangers are that if the scoops fail then as you say it will be a suicide mission. Also there's the fact that it would be impossible to abort the mission once they're more than halfway.”

Michael thought about the idea for a while, “Well it's worth considering. I'll put the idea to the project head. Right well aside from fuel and engines this ship will be carrying a crew of ten and several probes. The probes are being developed by another part of the Agency and outside bodies and aside from adding them to our total mass we can forget about them. However keeping the monkeys, I mean the astronauts, alive during their trip will be something else that we'll need to consider.”

***

After the meeting Katherine checked where the new computer was being set up and walked over there. She found Donald there going over some cases.

“Hi.”

“Oh, hi Katherine. I wasn't expecting to see you.”

“Oh well I just read they're using your ideas for the new computer. I guess you're pretty excited.”

“Oh well, it's pretty cool.” For some reason Donald kept glancing round the room, “Anyway it's not just mine.”

“Oh yeah, I meant yours and Megan's.”

“Listen,” Donald said in a quiet voice, as if worried they might be overheard, “I know why you're here.”

“I wanted to... Megan,” Katherine said as Megan came in.

“So Donald, has everything come?” Megan asked, ignoring Katherine.

“I'm just checking now,” Donald went back to the crates.

“I want to get started right away.”

“I guess you must be pretty excited,” Katherine said, wondering if coming here had been such a good idea.

Megan finally turned to Katherine, “I know why you're here.”

“Cool,” Katherine said, “Everyone knows why I'm here. Want to explain it to me?”

“You checked over the proposal before submitting it. If had a problem with the credits then you should have brought it up then.”

“What the hell?” Katherine tried to work out what Megan meant, while deciding what to do. Part of her wanted to escape, but another part was fed up of always rolling over and letting people walk over her. “Donald would you excuse us?”

“Sure,” Donald looked relieved as he headed for the exit.

“Actually you're busy. Megan if you'd come with me.”

“I'm busy as well.”

“Have you seen the org chart?” Katherine's voice was quiet, but there was an edge to it which wasn't normally there, “I'm your superior again. Now, while I don't expect you to start pretending that you like me again, I do expect you to do what I ask.”

“Fine,” Megan said looking both annoyed and surprised at Katherine's forcefulness.

Katherine turned and marched out of the room, leading them both out of the building. Keeping up a rapid pace Katherine ignored all attempts by Megan to start a conversation. As she walked to tried to calm herself down, knowing that if she tried to talk to Megan with the way she was feeling she'd say something she'd regret and ruin any chances of resolving things. She finally stopped when they reached a set of benches. Spinning round she asked, “Exactly what have I done to piss you off?”

Megan took a moment to catch her breath then said, “What?”

“It's a perfectly simple question. I must have done something to make you hate me, so what is it?”

“It's not something you've done. It's just you. You're so god damn perfect.”

Katherine shook her head, “No, I'm really not perfect.”

Megan threw her hands up in despair, “See this is what I'm talking about. Don't you ever get tired of being so nice?”

“Not really. Actually it's great.” Katherine looked sidelong at Megan before saying, “You should try it sometime.”

Megan stared at Katherine an odd expression on her face, her lips quivering slightly. After a moment she started laughing saying, “Yeah, I guess I should.” Sitting down she went on, “To be perfectly honest I don't know why you annoy me so much.” She was quiet for some time as she thought it over, “I'm not a biophobe, if that's what you were thinking.”

“You called me a freak,” Katherine said in a quiet voice.

Megan looked up, a look of surprise on her face, “Did I? Then I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that.”

Katherine sat down next to Megan, “It's okay, I've been called worse.”

“All my life I've felt like the stupid one, I mean I had two brothers and two sisters and they were much smarter than me. I had to go to a certain university because everyone else in my family did, and everyone there was better than me.”

“But you got in the space agency, surely that means something.”

“It did, but then I met you. It was like everything you did just made it clear I'd never be as good as you, never be as clever.” Megan chuckled softly, “Which is starting to seem like a stupid reason to dislike someone.”

“You know I never saw you as being stupid. You were always an asset to our group.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Megan fidgeted a little, “I'm starting to feel guilty. About the design.”

“Why?”

“You did help us, and I left you off the credit. I guess I was feeling spiteful.”

“I didn't do much. I was mainly just someone for you to throw ideas off. Anyway you were right, I did review the proposal. If I had a problem with it I could have said something.”

“Are you sure you didn't keep quiet in order to avoid a confrontation.”

Katherine opened her mouth to respond but closed it again.

“I thought as much. Maybe we can see the bursar, get it changed.”

“I'm not really bothered about getting credit for it.”

“But...”

“You know what, I'm the first Martian to travel at translight speeds. I reckon that's more than enough glory for one life time.”

“I should have known you'd go one better than us, again.” As Megan said this she was surprised to find she didn't feel any animosity about this.

“So are things okay between us?”

“Yeah, I'm sorry I was so nasty before.”

“Don't worry, it happens to the best of us.”

“Even you?”

“Well obviously not me. After all I'm perfect.” Katherine stood up, “Come on, we've both got a lot of work to do.”

***

When Paul got to the Agency the next day he ran into Michael who seemed to be very cheerful. When Paul pointed this out he said, “Oh well I went to art museum with my girlfriend last night.”

“Oh, I've been thinking about going with my wife for some time. Is it any good?”

“A bit dull actually but Crystal liked it and,” Michael grinned, “well anything that makes her happy is good..”

“Crystal? I thought that she was going out with Tony unless you mean...”

“No it is the same woman. She broke up with him after he attacked Katherine. To be honest I don't blame her either. Tony seems to have grown a bit unstable since I met him last.”

“No offence, but she seems to have a thing for people who work with the agency.”

“Yeah I noticed that. A sexy blonde who finds scientists attractive. I think she might just be the perfect woman.” Paul wasn't sure about this but decided it was best to not argue the point.

***

Later that day Paul got a call from Anne asking to see him. He went straight up to her office. “So what's up?”

“I assume you saw the news report last night.”

“You mean the one about the new AI superstar?”

Anne smiled as she answered, “What's your second guess?”

“I take it you mean the one about how the Alpha Centauri project is pointless and a waste of time and resources.”

“That's the one.”

“So? Is it going to affect anything?” Paul asked, not thinking they were going to stop work just because of one news report, “Are we suddenly going to abandon the project?”

“Yes and no.”

“Uh?”

“Yes it will change things but no we are not going to abandon the project. The main change is that Dr. Morgan will be focusing on PR. Showing how this project is more than just a pissing contest between Earth and Mars.”

“Leaving you to handle building the ship.”

“Exactly.” Anne's expression was as passive as ever, but having known her for several years Paul could tell she was overjoyed by this.

“Well then this was quite a lucky break.” Anne decided to not answer. “So what practical uses are there?”

“You know we've already got several companies wanting to help the project.”

“Help how?”

“Expertise, resources that sort of thing and I don't just mean Mars companies, there are Earth and Luna based ones as well.”

“What do they get out of it?”

“Faster more fuel efficient ships. You know it takes just over a week for ships to reach Jupiter. They're hoping to get that down to less than a day. Also we'll be carrying cargo for some companies.”

Paul had a horrible thought, “Just tell me we won't be putting adverts over the ship.”

“Hey, whatever it takes to get to Alpha Centauri.”

Paul considered this a moment, “Are we really going to work with Earth companies?”

“If they're willing to work with us, why not?”

“I can think of a few reasons,” Paul shrugged, “I guess that it's not up to me.”

“No it isn't, me neither. Well I just wanted you to know what was going on.”

“Right thanks.”

***

Katherine was just finishing up a report when Paul tapped on her computer, “Come on time to come home.”

“I'm glad you're here.” Katherine said as she shut her computer down, “Otherwise I might not get home some days.”

“Well after what happened before, I'm trying to keep regular hours.”

“Um, I don't follow. Before?”

Paul collected a folder from his desk as he asked, “Do you know why I retired from the agency?”

“I've heard rumours,” Katherine said cautiously.

“I can guess what they are. You shouldn't really listen to office gossip.”

“Well I don't. I mean it's often wrong and it's bad to spread rumours about people and...”

“I wasn't having an affair with Anne,” Paul finished for her.

“Well, no I didn't think so.” Katherine paused a moment then asked, “So why did you leave?”

“I had a nervous breakdown. I over worked myself and I wasn't able to cope. Anyway that's why I'm making sure that I get home at a reasonable hour every day.”

“Yeah, I can understand that.” Katherine hesitated again then said, “If you don't mind me saying, Karen seems to have a grudge against Anne.”

“Yeah. She blames Anne for my breakdown. At the time that I had it she was going for a promotion and Karen thinks that Anne pushed me too hard in order to get it.”

“Oh.”

“It was entirely my fault though.”

***

The next day, as Katherine arrived she found a note on her desk. It said, “Katherine please go to room 2B and help out there.” Katherine put the note on the recycle pile then set off.

Katherine walked down a long corridor whispering to herself, “2B, 2B.” Finding the right room she hit the door switch and went in. As the people in the room looked up she raised a hand, saying, “Hi. I was told to come here to help out.”

“You must be Katherine.” one of the group came over to shake her hand, “I'm Eric, I'm in charge of the project.”

“Okay, so what are you all doing?”

“You don't know?”

“I was just told to come here to help out.”

“Oh well we're working on designing the navigation sensors.” He walked over to a display and brought up some schematics, “Our goal is for the sensors to be able to detect any object larger than a hundred grammes when they are at least one light day away.”

“That's quite a long range.”

“Yeah, but at the speed the ship will be flying at it'll only have twenty four minutes to change course. Given how big it is, that won't be easy.”

Katherine nodded, “So what about things smaller than a hundred grammes?”

“The ship will have shielding to deflect them.”

“How's that going to be accomplished? I mean given how fast the ship will be...”

“Hey we don't need to worry about that.” Eric cut in. He shrugged and went on, “That's up to the shielding team.”

“Okay then, what have you done so far?” Eric began bringing up more data and explained their progress.

While the design work was going on a steady stream of robot lorries went to the space elevator, transporting materials to the Anderson station, ready for when construction could begin.

Good set-ups going on in this installment. I like the build of anticipation, as well as the inevitable intervention by higher-ups that is bound to cause strife for the engineers and designers. Mars is a lot like 21st century Earth, as you pointed out in the prologue. Very well done.

There's a lot of character stuff in this, yet the title and the main theme of the story, suggest an idea-- A race for Alpha Centauri. You've got lots of bigotry, betrayal, violence, hatred, love, and friendship packed into it, and those are character-story chestnuts. If the idea is just a vehicle for the characters to interact against and within, then consider either going a bit deeper into the character's heads, or focusing more on the Race for AC itself. It's a fine line you're walking right now, kind of cheating us, the readers from a true account of either-- so far, at least.

That's not to say that everything you've done here is wrong by any means. I remember the struggles, highs, and lows of both the characters and their mission(s,) and by remembering, I mean that you've managed to touch me with your story. There's great potential for an idea-story, and great potential for a character-story... I encourage you to decide which this truly is (to you.) Once you're clearer on that, then the readers will be as well.

As I said above, you've got a lot of fodder for either type of tale, and thus, there's no lack of imagination on your part. Quite the opposite, in fact. Here are my (unsolicited-- I'm being presumptuous, I know) suggestions for pursuing either:

Idea Story:

The Race is foremost. Write with a STRICT omniscient POV. No telling of inside thoughts... Show lots of facial cues and gestures when the characters are speaking, thus relaying emotions to the observational reader. By doing this, you keep the narrative detached from the players and concentrated on the idea-- the Race. They still get to love and hate and hit and kiss, but the readers watch it more than feel it. (Notice I used 'watch'-- All showing, no telling) That may sound like a negative, but when the idea is first, then that'll make the readers feel plenty of their own emotions as they pursue the goal along with the characters.

Make sure that each scene has a clear goal that pertains in a clear way to the Race. Sounds obvious, but it's hard to do and maintaining idea-focus like that is crucial to involving the audience in the mounting excitement that they're observing with the characters.

Character Story:

No matter how many players you have, pick a few favorites, and show everything through their lenses, one at a time. This means that you'll have to pick your favorites carefully, so that they do not divulge secrets that aren't ready for revelation, and so that their internal thoughts will be conducive to the idea-- the Race -- Now secondary to the character's interactions in terms of reader-attention. Reader's feelings will follow those of the character's more so than their pursuit of the goal, so make sure the feelings are deep and vivid enough to hold their own... Heck, they can even overshadow the idea for the most part since the reader's will be engaged in the personal aspects of the story much more than the gross plot-shape.

If it's turning out to be an involved plot, alternate between POV characters to skip around from thread to thread. Whenever you jump, it's a new scene, or a new chapter, so take a few sentences to establish the time, place, and 'feel' at the start of each jump. Some stories start the scenes with:

[-- Washington, D.C. April 3rd 2004 --15:23: Office of Senator Shagnasty--]

I don't care for that myself, but it does work for a lot of readers. I try to keep it short and relevant, even toss a mood in where I can.

[-- Sandy kept her eyes down and stepped softly. The floorboards of the old house had twisted themselves through decades of dampness and threatened to creak with each step that she made.--]

This doesn't seem very character-oriented, but the actor must have a well-appointed stage for most scenes. Not all scenes, but most. In these two sentences, we meet Sandy, learn that she's in a house that's not well kept, maybe abandoned, and she's trying very hard to be quiet. 30 words... Place, person, and some mood. Done. It's not the best way to start a scene, but it will serve to orient the reader, and even tug them along a little.

For each scene, have a clear character goal in-mind, and make sure that you at least try to relate it to the reader.

I didn't get into the above scene far enough to establish a goal, but we could assume from the first 30 words that it has to do with being quiet for some reason-- Hiding, stalking, burglary? You get the picture.

Keeping the POV character's motivations a secret is absolutely unacceptable. Not that I've noticed you doing that here, but I can't state that enough. If you're main character is going to lay a surprise on the reader, or the other characters, handle that with extreme care (read semantic trickery) or hand the POV to a character that does not know about the bomb about to be dropped.

Orson Scott Card frequently mentions what he (and others) call the MICE principle:

Stories are primarily one of the following:

Milieu-- About, more than anything, the world of the story. Think Lord of the Rings.

Idea-- About, more than anything, an idea. What if? stories... What if cats could talk? What if people routinely ate their uglier children? What if your robot servant fell in love with you? And so on...

Character-- About, more than anything else, characters. These stories revolve around the experiences and -- usually-- growth of a particular character. Think A Christmas Carol, or the Wizard of Oz, even. There's a moment in the character's life that begins the conflict-- change, accept, or run.

Event-- About, more than anything else, an event. A bank robbery. A murder mystery. A wedding. And so on...

The "Race" looks to me like a character story surrounding an idea (possibly an event.)

I'd say more, but there's really not much to remark on other then the set-up for the pending events. I know from reading your works that you're full of great ideas, and I eagerly await learning about more of them. I turned this into a lecture, didn't I? Well, this stuff took a long time to get into my thick skull, so I feel obligated (beyond common decency) to relay them to you.

I'll stop before you go to sleep... Plus, my hands are killing me (shoveling snow for 2 days straight... I'm typing about twenty-five words a minute-- lot's of backspacing due to fumbling digits.)

*sits at front of theater and starts getting out pens and note paper* okay I'm ready for the lecture :)

Firstly can I say, it's all Katherine's fault. I mean when I first thought about the story (which was a couple of years ago) it was just about the Race. Not only that but Paul was the main Character. But as I started writing it, she just kept taking over the story, hogging the limelight. To make things worse, the other characters started following her rebellious example. Saying things like, "Sod Alpha Centauri, write about me instead." ;)

To be honest I prefer writing (and reading) stories which are about people. To me the ideas or events should just be there to so that the story isn't just about them twiddling their thumbs.

Also it seems to me that while it might be possible to write a short story (or possibly a novella) about a single idea, I think it'd be hard to stretch it out to a full length novel and keep it interesting.

So I guess I'm saying I'm going with a character story. To be honest the race is pushed even more into the background in the next couple of chapters.

So it seems I need to choose the pivotal characters (I've got an idea about this) and let the readers get further into their heads.

I don't care for that myself, but it does work for a lot of readers. I try to keep it short and relevant, even toss a mood in where I can.

I don't care for it either. It tells the reader a lot, but nothing really interesting.

This reminds me of a detective story which is 1st person from the detectives point of view, where it turns out that the detective is the murderer. One the one hand it is origional (though I've always had my suspicions about Jessica Fletcher, I mean how come people die where ever she goes?) but it's also something of a cheat.

Finally can I just say Wow! The fact that my story inspired you to write all that (with frozen hands yet) is incredibly flattering.

As always you've given me a lot to think about, thanks :)

Hey Justin,

Great update. I'm really enjoying the story.

I'll just sit back and let SQ lead the way for comments and nod while scabbering about for a pen and paper before eagerly taking notes. Wow!!

Favourite lines:

“What the hell?” Katherine tried to work out what Megan meant, while deciding what to do. Part of her wanted to escape, but another part was fed up of always rolling over and letting people walk over her. “Donald would you excuse us?”

Looking forward to more.

Okay, so it's a little late :blush . Not to self, don't give exact dates for an update.

The reason for the lateness is I wasn't really happy with the chapter and was trying to polish it a bit. To be honest I'm still not 100% happy with it.

Well after that build up...

Chapter 9 - Construction begins

"Later we have an interview with Katherine Goodings, the first Martian to break the light barrier.

'To be honest to be honest I've always focused on getting to Alpha Centauri. These tests were just to prove that that was possible. So breaking the light barrier was good, great even, but we can't rest till a Martian ship reaches Alpha Centauri.'

But first Dominique Entertainment Industries, one of the biggest producers of Genetically engineered and artificial stars released their latest creation. Her name is Denise and her creators claim that she contains some of the most advanced aritificial intelligence software written. The press release says that she's not so much a form of artificial intelligence as artificial sentience. Denise's first album will be coming out later this week. After that she is already contracted to write and direct and star in a series of films. As of yet there is no word as to what these films will be about but it is believed that they will be of action comedy genre. Critics are asking if we really need another fake celebrity."

Tony pushed the accelerator stick of his car forwards noting, with some satisfaction, that the modifications he had made to the speed inhibitors were working properly. Turning the wheel hard, he swerved round a tight corner, almost going off the road. He pushed the stick harder, watching the speed reading go up. Once it was high enough he spun the wheel the other way, sending the car flying off the road, over the edge of the cliff.

When the remains of the car were examined it was found that the fuel line had been tampered with so that it had been leaking a small amount of hydrogen gas. The gas had built up within the car and a spark when the car hit the ground ignited it. For the first time in years it was necessary to use dental records in order to identify the body.

Crystal watched the car going off the cliff and the resulting explosion from a higher road. Sighing she turned and went back to her car.

Out at the Anderson space station, at the construction yard a construction pod extended from on of the control centers. This was basically just a rod of super strong metal which would act as a start point for the construction. Once it was in place an army of tiny robots began running down it, each holding a small piece of metal, ten centimeters across. Once they had put the piece of metal in place they used a small laser to weld it in place with a small laser. They then returned for another piece of metal. As the robots worked outwards, building up the hull a second wave of robots ran along it checking and rechecking the seals.

When the outer hull was underway more robots were set to work building the inner hulls.

Paul pulled up outside Katherine's house then got out his pad and began checking his schedule for the day. He gave a small groan, as he realised that he was going to be spending most of the day in meetings. A few moments later the door opened and Katherine got in. Looking up Paul noticed that she seemed a bit flustered. "Is something wrong?"

"I, um, overslept," Katherine answered in a hurried tone.

Paul smiled as he pulled out, "It happens to the best of us. I saw your interview last night."

"Oh." Was all Katherine said. Then, in a tentative voice she added, "What did you think?"

"I thought it was good. I mean I already knew a lot of the stuff you talked about, but I think you did well."

"Thanks. The interviewer was really good. We spent a while before hand chatting, that really helped put me at ease."

"Yeah." Paul considered commenting further, but then rejected the idea.

"Though..." Katherine hesitated a moment, "I kept getting the feeling that she was flirting with me."

Paul nodded, "I asked a couple of people about that, It seems that she does that with all her guests, it's her shtick."

"Oh, and here was me thinking it was my irresistible personality." Katherine grinned, "So are you going to be doing any? It is your engine after all."

"Oh no. The space agency is well aware of my policy on interviews. Namely that I don't give any."

"Oh." Katherine's brow furrowed as she seemed to consider this, "You can do that?"

***

They had just reached the lobby of the agency when they were stopped by Anne. Even as she approached them Paul could tell that she was agitated about something.

"Good morning, Katherine," Anne said before turning to Paul, "Paul can I talk to you?"

"Sure." Turning Katherine led him into an unused office. Sitting in one of the chairs Paul asked, "So what's up?"

Anne leant against the desk and said, "It's about Tony."

"What's he done now?"

Anne started to speak, but then stopped herself. Looking down she spent a few moments studying a crack in the desk. Finally she looked up at him, "He killed himself."

For a moment Paul felt ill. "..." He didn't know what to say, "You've got to be kidding."

Anne shook her head. Moving away from the desk she said, "I wish I was. Last night he drove his car over a cliff. He had tampered with the fuel line so the car had filled up with hydrogen. It exploded on impact."

Paul started to stand, then sat down again. "My god, I..."

"Yeah, I'm having trouble believing it."

"I know he's been acting weird, but I..."

Anne started pacing, "I keep wondering if maybe his aberrant behaviour was due to, I don't know, some sort of mental breakdown."

"I had no idea," Paul said quietly, going over everything that had happened.

"Me neither, though this wouldn't be the first time I missed this sort of thing."

Paul didn't seem to have heard, "I think I need to get to work."

"Are you sure? You can have some time off if you want."

"No, I think I just need to be busy right now."

"Of course." Anne walked over and opened the door for him.

***

As Anne walked into the meeting room she took a moment to size up the two people that Graham was meeting with. There was an old man, who was obviously a business man of some sort, probably from Luna. The woman was harder to get a handle on. She was a young slender woman, who had short black hair. Looking at her Anne had the feeling that she was bioengineered.

"Ah Anne, I would like to introduce you to Mr Francis Malevich, the CEO of the Melevich construction company and his assistant Ada Wilis."

"Hello." Anne said to them both, as she took a seat opposite them.

"Mr Malevich has some questions about our project that I thought you'd be better able to deal with." Graham went on.

"Of course." Anne said as she sat down, "I'll try to answer any questions that you might have."

Francis took a moment to size her up then said, "You're an Earther, aren't you?"

"That's correct," Anne answered with a slight nod.

"Forgive me for asking this, but what made you move to Mars?"

Anne spent a moment considering her answer, "I had some personal problems and felt it best to make a clean break from Earth."

"Ah an honest answer. Such a rarity these days. Anyway I am willing to dedicate the resources of my company to help with your project, and in return I would like you to carry a rather unusual cargo."

"Well whatever it is we'll do we can to carry it."

"My daughter."

For a moment Anne couldn't believe what she had heard, "Excuse me?"

"I want you to take my daughter to Alpha Centauri."

Anne turned to Graham and asked, "We're carrying passengers now?"

"I think we should at least consider the idea."

Anne turned back to Francis, "Forgive me for being blunt but do you realise the dangers involved? We'll do everything we can to make sure the ship comes back safely but there's still a good chance that it won't."

"Of course, I am well aware of the risks involved, as is my daughter. Now about my questions."

***

Paul read over the report he had been sent and made a couple of corrections, He sat back in his chair, considering what he'd read. As he did he saw Katherine approaching. He was going to greet her, but noticed that she didn't look very happy.

"Have you heard the news?" Katherine asked as she reached his desk.

"What? You mean about Tony?"

"No," Katherine shook her head, "I haven't heard anything from or about him since..." Katherine raised her hand to the back of her head, "I have to say I'm glad about that. Anyway apparently we're taking a passenger." Katherine looked vaguely disgusted as she said this.

"Oh yeah, I heard that." Paul saved the report he'd been working on then looked up at Katherine, "I get the impression that you're not happy."

Katherine folded her arms across her chest, "It must be great, you know."

"What must?" Paul asked, confused by the comment.

"Well being able to go to your father and say 'daddy I want to go to Alpha Centauri.' and for him to respond, 'of course darling, I'll get some tickets from ebookers.'"

Paul couldn't help smiling, "Someone sounds jealous."

"No, of course not," Katherine reconsidered then added, "Well maybe."

Paul nodded and turned back to the screen.

Leaning forwards against the desk Katharine said, "Anyway I came to tell you, it's closing up time."

"It can't be that late," Paul argued as he looked at the clock.

"Yup, time for us to get ourselves back to our wives."

Paul sighed, "Okay then, let me just shut everything down." As he was shutting down his computers Paul said, "Isn't it normally me who has to pry you away from your keyboard?"

"Yes, well there's something I need to get home for."

"Which is?"

Katherine laughed, "Maybe I'll tell you Monday."

***

Once Paul had shut everything down they headed down to the lobby. They were walking to the exit when a guard stopped them. "Excuse me, sir, ma'am I'm afraid you're going to have to put your bags through the scanner."

As Paul put his bags through the device he said, "Well this is new."

"Yeah," Katherine said, "I'm not entirely surprised. I mean Donald said..." Katherine fell silent, glancing at the guard. She put her bag through saying, "I guess we're going to have to do this every day."

Once they'd retrieved their bags and been checked by the guard they headed to the exit. They had to go up a short flight of stairs to get to the carpark. Going up Katherine went over the work she'd done that day, deciding on what she needed to focus on.

At the Paul opened the door up and asked, "So what did he say?"

Katherine stared at him blankly, "Huh?"

"What did Donald say?"

"Oh, He said that our security people have been talking a lot with the Mars security services. Also someone's been making copies of confidential documents."

"That shouldn't be possible," Paul said, shaking his head as he thought about the difficulties he had had having to get permission to make a copy of a file that he needed.

Katherine shrugged, "He said he thinks someone's been using one of the bosses access codes to disable the copy protections."

"Great, so if he's right we've got a leak."

The car was parked by a set of windows. Katherine wondered over to them and looked out. She had the feeling that she was being watched. Deciding she was being paranoid she turned back, only then realising that Paul was saying something. "I'm sorry, what was that?"

"I said, it's going to be a pain."

"Well it'll be inconvenient," Katherine opened her door up before going on, "but it's not like we've got anything to worry about."

***

Across the street from the Space Agency building a man stood holding a small screen. On it was a image of Katherine and Paul as they headed to Paul's car. He listened to their conversation until they got into Paul's car. He then lifted a radio to his mouth saying, "The suspect is leaving the area in vehicle registration five three delta tango four."

"Confirmed," The response came, "We have the traffic network monitoring that vehicle."

"I'm sending a recording of their last conversation, I recommend talking to this Donald."

"Already taken care of. Agent Smith is planning on questioning all the suspect's aquaintances, as soon as it's time to make a move."

He couldn't help grimacing at that, "Agent Smith is involved? I almost feel sorry for her."

***

A young man sat at a cafe on the outskirts of the colony. He was drinking a mug of cappuccino whilst listening to a small radio which he had fitted in his ear. Reaching up he took it out and turned it off. Twiddling it in his hands he thought about what he had just heard. The fact that the security services suspected someone within the agency would make his employers very happy. Getting out a data pad he entered in a message, encrypted it, then sent it to a disused message system.

***

Close to the center of the colony there was a shooting range. Going through the main doors led into the entrance lobby. Opposite the entrance doors led into the simulator rooms. Set off to one side there was a reception desk. There was a guard standing there who was just double checking the monitors when someone came in. Looking up he said, "Anne, it's been a while."

"Yes, well, I'm going to have to be retested for my license soon, and I wanted to get some practice in."

"Good idea, the test is getting tougher soon." He checked which simulator was free then said, "Well you know the way. Room five."

Anne nodded, and went through into the main room.

The guard sighed. He remembered that Anne had first gotten her gun after having trouble with a stalker. He just hoped that her story about being tested was true and she wasn't having any more trouble.

***

Anne moved into the study of the house, noting an intruder there. Raising her gun she shot him before he could react. He fell to the floor, unconscious. Anne started to move into the room, stopping as she heard the door open behind her. Spinning round she saw a tall woman, with long silver hair and delicate features. Anne froze, staring at the woman. "Cybil," She whispered. A moment later she felt a pain in her back, and the simulation switched off.

As Anne hurried out the guard asked, "Is something wrong?"

"No, I just remembered a report I need to get done by tomorrow," Anne called over her shoulder.

***

Waking up Sandra rolled over, only to find that she was alone. Getting up she went over to the closet. Pressing a couple of buttons she grabbed the clothes that came out, and put them on. Going out she noticed that the door of the study was ajar. Shaking her head Sandra went downstairs and put on the coffee machine.

***

Sandra knocked on the door and went in. Seeing Katherine sitting at the computer she said, "Don't tell me you're working."

"Oh no, I'm just... uh..."

"Do you know what day it is?" Sandra asked as she put the cup of coffee she was holding next to Katherine.

"Thanks." Katherine took a sip from the coffee before guessing, "Saturday?"

"I mean aside from that."

Katherine furrowed her brow, before looking excited, "Oh oh oh!"

"Yes?" Sandra asked, smiling slightly.

"It was a year ago today that Earth broke the light barrier."

Sandra sat down next to Katherine, "Yes, that's what I was talking about. So what are your plans for today?"

"Well I was going to spend the morning I was going to sort out and backup all my data. Then this afternoon, I was going to do some reading." Katherine turned back to the computer and started working again. After a few moments she added, "And this evening I thought we'd go Taraopia View for dinner."

It took Sandra a moment to process that, "But that's really hard to get into."

Katherine nodded, looking annoyed, "Tell me about it."

"But, why?"

Katherine turned to Sandra with a curious expression, "It's not everyday you get to celebrate your first anniversary with your wife."

"Oh. So the whole pretending to have forgotten thing?"

"Was me being lovable?"

"Annoying more like."

"Yeah that too."

"So how did you get reservations?"

"I know some people, who know some people."

"Anne?"

Katherine nodded, "Anne."

***

When Michael got home he found a message from Crystal, asking to see him. When he got to her apartment he found her sitting on her bed, with tears running down her face.

"I take it you've heard about Tony."

Crystal nodded. Turning to look at Michael she said in a small voice, "I can't help feel that... that it's partly my fault."

Michael sat down next to her and put his arm round her shoulder, "You shouldn't blame yourself."

"But maybe if I hadn't broken up with him..."

"Now you didn't really have much choice, not after what he did at the party."

"I know but..."

"No buts. He was totally out of control and as harsh as this might sound I'm just glad that he wasn't able to take you down with him."

Crystal nodded, then looking into Michael's eyes she whispered, "Hold me."

***

Katherine was sitting at her dressing table when Sandra came into the room. Turning she saw that Sandra was wearing a long black dress.

After staring at Sandra a while she finally managed to say, "I really like that dress."

"Thanks." She looked over the scruffy top that Katherine was wearing, "Though I'm starting to feel a little over dressed. Are you going to wear that?"

"Uh, no. Could you help pick out a top?" She gave Sandra a pleading look, "You're better at it than me."

"Turn around," Sandra instructed. As Katherine did so Sandra walked up behind her saying, "Maybe you should choose something that goes with this." Sandra slipped a necklace round Katherine's throat and did up the clasp.

Katherine lifted the necklace up, inspecting it in the mirror, "Ooh, shiny."

Sandra just raised an eyebrow in response.

Turning Katherine said, "It's beautiful, thank you."

"I know the first anniversary is supposed to be paper, but well I couldn't help it."

"What would you have done if I had forgotten?"

"I still would have given it to you. Then used it to guilt trip you the next time we had a disagreement."

Turning back to the mirror Katherine said, "I'm married to a criminal mastermind." Then remembering what she was wearing she shouted, "Top!"

***

The restaurant was at the top of a tower and gave a view of the colony. It was furnished in an old fashioned style with all the modern technology hidden away. Getting of the lift Sandra took a moment to look around. She was a little surprised to see a pianist in the middle of the room, though less surprised that it was pretty crowded. After a short while a waiter came and they were shown to a window seat.

"You know this is going to be hard to top," Sandra said looking round the restaurant, "I mean next year."

"I know." Katherine smiled as she added, "Though it'll be your turn to make the arrangements."

"Great." Sandra got a paper out of her handbag, "You know I was doing some clearing out and I found this."

"Oh yes?" Katherine asked, trying to sneak a look at it, "What is it?"

"It's the reference that Mars Robotics sent to the space agency for you."

"You know I never really read that," Katherine said in a quiet voice. She hadn't really gotten on with the people there and hadn't wanted to know what they'd written about her.

"Yeah. I'd like to read it to you."

"Um, okay," Katherine stared at Sandra as she tried to figure out what was going on.

"It says, 'Katherine Goodings is an exceptionally bright worker who is able to quickly grasp any problem she works on. Her analytical abilities are second..."

Katherine looked down, feeling embarrassed, "You're making me blush."

"Second to none," Sandra went on, as if she hadn't heard. "However she has trouble dealing with pressure which hinders her ability to work to a deadline. Secondly her interpersonal skills leave a lot to be desired. She's quiet and moody, regarding any attempts at friendship with suspicion or outright hostility. She seems to suffer from social anxiety, paranoia and possibly borderline schizophrenia. We recommend putting her in a position where she will be able to use her technical skills to best advantage where there is little pressure and minimal contact with other people."

Katherine looked up, a shocked expression on her face, "Uh, they wrote that?"

"Yeah."

"I'm sure there was a point to reading it."

"Well aside from being annoyed that they put that on your reference I..." Sandra stopped, looking at Katherine, Taking her hand she said, "Honey, I didn't mean to upset you but don't you see how much you've changed."

"Changed?" Katherine questioned, her voice quiet.

"You're not the person they wrote about. You've grown so much, Even in the time I've known you, you've come into your own."

"Really?"

"Yes, I think working at the space agency helped."

"It was a better environment than Mars Robotics."

"But also since you've started on this project you've grown a lot more confident."

"I didn't know."

"I thought that might be the case."

"You've forgotten one thing that really helped me though."

"I have?"

"Yes, you. You've always had confidence in me. I guess that that confidence has been rubbing off on me."

Sandra looked down at the display on the table. Frowning she asked, "Have you decided on what you want?"

Katherine read over the menu, "I think I need a bit longer."

"Me too." Sandra scrolled down the list a couple of times. "There was something else I wanted to talk to you about."

"Oh yes?"

Sandra stared down at the menu display as she thought about what to say, "I'd like to get a new bit of furniture, for the living room."

"You do?" Katherine frowned as she tried to figure out what was going on, "anything in particular?"

Sandra looked up at Katherine as she said, "I was thinking about a basinet."

Katherine looked even more confused at this, "Basi..." Then her face lit up with understanding, "You mean, you want to have children?"

"Yes," Sandra grinned, "I want to have your children."

"Oh," Katherine said, visibly deflating.

"What's wrong?"

"Well is it possible? I mean we don't know if we're compatible."

"Well we can find out. If we are, then do you want to?"

"Oh yes, definitely." Letting go of Sandra's hand she said, "This is the best anniversary ever."

***

"So here we are over what I guess is supposed to be a copy of the alps," Tony said pointing out a window of the car.

Paul turned to point the camera he was holding out the window, getting a view of the piste below.

As Paul turned back to Tony they saw a man walk past, loaded with boxes. As he struggled to open the door, Tony quickly got up and went to open it for him, holding it as he went through. Coming back Tony said, "I hope you're getting my best side."

"I'm trying but your nose keeps getting in the way."

"Hey!"

Paul paused the video and stared at the frozen image a while. He had wanted to prove to himself there had been a time when Tony had been a decent person, when he had been proud to call Tony a friend. "What happened Tony, why did you change?" Paul asked the image of his friend.

Justin—

Good stuff, yet again.

Good dialogue here. You’ve shown yet again that timing is everything…

I’m an evil person at-heart, maybe, but I think it’d be neat if Ada and Katherine were put into a position where they found themselves a bit too comfortable (abruptly and suddenly, after lots of conflict/feuding between them, of course,) and Katherine needed to do the right thing and honor her vows with Sandra… yet a small part of her did indeed regret not going further because she did find Ada a genuinely alluring and attractive person… Like I said, I’m evil—As far as giving characters a tough time, at least. : -->>:

Show me the $%&$%& robots! What do they look like? Tiny silver bubbles rolling down the length of the mighty beam, glinting the harsh light of the distant sun as they creep their way through their mono-focused day-to-day existences? Maybe they look like battered filing cabinets with arms and blinking lights? Perhaps they’re humanoid, but only a foot tall? Like I said, “Show me the %^&*%^* robots!” This is Sci-Fi after all. :)

The anniversary was sweet. The prospect and idea of their off-springing endeavor could be a story in itself. Interesting twist too. Will they be compatible? What if they aren’t. What if they are, but one of them fudges with the test results? Why would they do that? Is there something that one isn’t willing to tell the other? Man… I could turn that into a book.

Great update, Justin.

Looking forward to more!

I'm glad that you enjoyed the last part.

Katherine and Ada? That's certainly, um,an interesting idea.

Show me the $%&$%& robots! What do they look like?

You're right, the description of the robots was a bit lacking. I'm working on fixing that. For now though I'll say that they're small spheres (5 cm or 2 inches across) which walk on four legs and which have a very small laser at the front.

Thanks for the feedback :)
