Concert Experiences

Postby Footman311 » Fri Jan 16, 2004 6:38 pm

Hey all I was just wondering what concerts everyone likes to go to

Personally, I think 311 has the best live shows for a band in this era, they have amazing energy on stage, always play at least an hour and a half, and sometimes over five hours, and they do sweet things on stage like the tribal drums, awesome guitar solos, stage dives and all kinds of other stuff

also Thursday has a cool show, they have awesome energy too, but can't match the energy of 311

I'm more into local scenes and what they have to offer. I like small crowds and a feeling of intimacy with the performer(s). The scene in the town I'm living in now isn't that great, but it has its moments. A few weekends ago I caught an acoustic set at a local coffee house, which was really enjoyable. In the last town I lived in though the scene was thriving. There was (and still is) always something going on. There were the two coffee houses that had shows every so often as well as open mic night every week. Also there was one venue my friends and I frequented that usually housed weekly shows of the emo/indie variety as well as another venue for all the hardcore/punk shows. I miss the city and I sometimes want to go back just for the music.

I also venture out to more well known shows on occasion. Reggie And The Full Effect is a great band to begin with, but they're live show just goes off every time. They really put an effort into it. With their 'alter egos' Fluxuation, Hungary Bear, and Common Denominator you can't go wrong at a Reggie show. Bright Eyes shows are really powerful too. Connor Oburst is just amazing, and though it's not an upbeat show, it's definately still great. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones probably put on the best show I've seen to date. Every single time I see them I walk away in total awe of how great they are. Dicky Barrett just floors me and I love the crazy guy skankin' around on stage (Ben Carr - The Bosstone).

That's my two cents.

Sarah

It's okay to be angry and never let go. It only gets harder the more that you know. When you get lonely if no one's around you know that I'll catch you when you're falling down. We came together but you left alone, and I know how it feels to walk out on your own. Maybe someday I will see you again, and you'll look me in my eyes and call me your friend

I went to see Christina Aguilera in concert back in October and wow.... she's even more amazing live ('course, that may just be my opinion). It was kinda a big deal for me anyway, because i'm a huge fan and her music has meant a lot to me, so it was like a dream come true. lol. She was really incredible though, i don't think one person was sitting down the whole time she was on stage. The clothes were... okay, interesting, but i think most have come to expect that;) However, she looked great in everything she wore. It was just... amazing.

Right, i'm gonna stop now, otherwise i'll go on all night. ;)

concerts in order

I have attened two Grateful Dead shows back when Jerry Garcia was alive. Nuff said.

My very first concert was the Bangles before they broke up, I still remember seeing them preform 'walk like an egyptian'

Since then I have been to a record number of...

35 concerts.

Amazing concerts

1. Meeting my life long obsessions the Indigo Girls at a show and getting their autographs. It was incredible, since the concert was out of town. And we got up close and personal with Amy Ray and Emily Saliers since I had listened to and seen 8 times previously.

2. We drove to Atlanta to go on this travel package deal with FanBox20, the Matchbox 20 fan club. We got to sit in on soundcheck, and stay a total of 8 hours durring the concert, which was about 3 and then two or three hours afterward and watch them film their dvd and the video for Bright Lights, which is whats been playing on HBO and MTV. We originally had 10th row, but I bitched out the guy in charge made him get off the stage to come talk to me and give my friend and I the last two passes to be up front. Needless to say I was pressed against the stage walkway all night and got to shake Rob Thomas's hand.

3. Going to see Ani Difranco and have her sing Both Hands solo acoustic.

4. Finally seeing Tracy Chapman live after her having been one of the first cd's I ever bought.

I am walking out in the rain I am listening to the low moan of the dial tone again and I am getting no where with you and I won't let it go and I won't get through, with both hands...ani d

my favorite band to see live, hands down, is mates of state. they're this really good band composed of a married couple - she plays the organ and he plays the drums and they both sing. they're so much fun to listen to at home (or in the car... you know, wherever) because their sound is so unique. you put those two instruments together and you think, eh, boring but they really make it work. they've got some great harmonies too. anyway, what makes them so great live is their interaction with each other. they can hardly keep their eyes off of each other while singing their little lungs out and you can practically feel the love oozing between them. call me a sap if you will, but a mates of state show is really something else. i've seen them twice and both experiences were just about the most fun i've ever had at a show.

other cool bands live:

-rainer maria. kyle jumping around all crazy with his guitar, caithlin and her cutesy banter, sigh.

-the gossip. i really think it's impossible to not dance when they're on stage.

-rx bandits. i'm not a huge fan of ska but i can make an exception for them. these guys put on an absolutely amazing show.

the end!

The first concert I went to was Britney Spears. But I was like 15! That was like almost 4 years ago. I remember I went with my mom haha.

I went to a concert called Live, Hard, and Local II here where I live. It had like Chronic Distortion, thats the only band I can remember. I might be going to see Devil Driver next month.

Hey everyone,

Hmm, looks as though we have quite a varied selection here lol. Ive been to a mixture of all kinds of gigs, local bands, small venues, big venues, festivals...rock, punk, metal, indie...and theyre all so different its hard to choose!

My first concert was...oh dear.. ocean colour scene. im sure the uk kittens while know them, if not more of you. Yep, that was in my indie phase, hehe.

I think the best small venue gig ive been to was queens of the ston age, about...wow about 3/4 years ago now, in a tiny venue, surrounded by loads of huge old metal/biker men, and im only 5'4" lol. But yeah that was great.

I went to reading festival in 2002, that was woohoo! I saw some of my fave bands all in one go, met some great people, and lived on pot noodles and crisps. Mmmm! lol

Am hopefully going to glastonbury this year, so will get to see more of my fave bands..just not looking forward to the no shower for 4 days part, hehe.

Anyways, enough about me!

I've been to a whole mixture of concerts to compliment my somewhat eclectic taste in music, but I still think the best gig I ever went to was Nine Inch Nails at Brixton way back in 1999. They just blew me away. Bloody marvellous stuff :D

I'm going to see the White Stripes again (3rd time yay!) on Wednesday at Ally Pally so it'll be interesting to see them play a larger venue than what I am used to. I'm also going to see The Music and Pink in the next couple of months and if money allows I may try and hook up a ticket for Norah Jones at some point.

Me and my gf are as bad as each other and if we see a band we like we kind of egg the other one on to go and buy tickets (we're supposed to be saving money for the house but concerts are just so damn appealing)

Off the top of my head and during the past 2 years I think I've seen the following at their own headlining gigs; Heather Nova, Vanessa Carlton, Linkin Park, Audioslave, Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne, White Stripes, Sheryl Crow, REM, Train, Four Star Mary, Puressence, Massive Attack, Filter, Jewel, Lostprophets and for a laugh Ghost of the Robot (not that bad but Marsters lacked the confidence to emote properly on stage that night imho) plus countless bands at the Reading Festival. I've never been to Glastonbury but been to Reading about 4 times and seen some top class sets there. Chemical Brothers in 1999 were great, particularly when they blew up the left hand side of the main stage speakers during Blcok Rockin' Beats. Cracking stuff :cool Cooper Temple Clause and Hundred Reasons were also very good this year, but the Music blew me away. They spanked Metallica who were playing on the main stage at the same time. :party

My favourite concerts... Let's see!

Indigo Girls. No question. They're just amazing in concert. I love when it's just the two of them and I love when they bring the band along and nearly bring down the roof. Then there's the time in LA when Amy was wearing pigtails and plaid and looked SO hot. :grin

Barenaked Ladies. Great music and great personalities. I danced and laughed the whole time!

Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Wowie are they amazing :)

Kiri Te Kanawa. One of the most beautiful voices in the world. Her encore when she sang a Maori love song a cappella was just incredible.

The last concert I went to was Maddy Prior and the Girls and I am hoping to catch up with Maddy again at one of Steeleye Span's 35th Anniversary Tour concerts this year. Would like to go to Cropredy in August...guess i'm just an old 'folkie' at heart.

Re: Concert Experiences

Postby seurat » Tue Jan 20, 2004 8:31 pm

The concerts I most enjoy seeing are the smaller ones, usually in clubs or smaller halls. I love to see the players up close and I'm willing to suffer a bit, stand for a long time, get crushed a bit etc to do it. I've also been to more than my share of big spectacular concerts over the years and they can be great fun too. I just find that after seeing hundreds of bands over the years in every imaginable sort of space, the small shows work best for me.

And yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said hundreds up there. Many hundreds in fact. What can I say? Writing a few reviews over the years had it's reward, free admission to lots and lots and lots of shows. So picking all-time faves is really out of the question. But recently? The last great concert I saw was by Broken Social Scene for two nights at a big club here, particularly the second night when Metric opened. Shelby Lynne is remarkable, her show at a small club called the Horseshoe was spine-tingling good. Some people give all they have on stage, lay their souls bare for you. She's one of them. Not to be missed. Essex Green did a great set in the same club a few months ago, enjoying themselves so much that they played old songs from their past that half the current band had never even played and had to be taught on the spot. And for sheer giddy forget-about-your-troubles fun, Tegan and Sara or the New Pornographers are heard to beat. I can echo the praise for many of the performers that others have mentioned, but I'll only single out one, Rainer Maria, for the energy and committment of every show I've seen them do in the last couple of years.

My first concert was at a local fair, but seeing Martina McBride singing independance day live from the first row was amazing. I'm not a fan of country usually but this was amazing.

Lilith fair was beautiful, esp. seeing Sarah McLachlan performing Ice cream on the fourth of July with fireworks going off overhead.

Kittie at the House of Blues in Chicago was awsome, although I came out of that mosh pit rather black and blue and red all over.

Area one was cool as a whole, but out of all of the performers there Outkast and Incubus just completely blew my mind.

Indigo girls were great, Amy was in plaid and pigtails here too.

Out of all of them though, my alltime favorite is Ani Difranco. I'll be seeing her for the eighth time next week, and I just completely am in awe every time I see her live. She's beautiful and so full of energy..even when she was confined to her stool due to a broken foot..she makes her concerts amazing.

Who were you then? And who are you now? That you think you can figure it all out, the mathematics of regret. It takes two beers to remember now, and five more to forget. That I love you so..what. Yeah I love you so..what.

Top 5 Concerts...so far...

1. No Doubt / Garbage / The Distillers (2002): All three bands were great. I couldn't believe I was finally getting to see Garbage for the first time. Sang every word to every song. And this was my first exposure to The Distillers. Despite not being able to decipher what she was singing, I was hooked to Brody's voice instantly. And, of course, Shirley Manson is the queen of all things.

2. Lilith Fair (1998): My first and only (so far), outdoor festival concert. Everyone was great, but Sarah was the absolute best moment of the show. I think the music played from 2pm until 10pm. Great show.

3. Dixie Chicks (2003): INCREDIBLE. I think they sound better live than they do on their studio CDs. Hearing them sing "Top of the World" and seeing that moving video on the screen, you could just feel the emotion pouring out.

4. Chris Isaak (1998): My second of three times (so far) seeing him live. I got his autograph on a poster and talked to him for a few seconds. One of my best friends became a now-diehard fan because of this concert. I love exposing friends to music they've never heard before.

5. (tie) Mary-Chapin Carpenter/The Mavericks (1995) and Guster (2003): The MCC concert, I was in the 3rd row, so close to everything. Sang along to every song by both MCC and The Mavs. The whole atmosphere of the Guster concert was overwhelming. It was the House of Blues and everyone there were diehard fans, knew every song by heart and were really friendly to those around them. Great experience.

Everybody's talking about good concert experiences, so I thought I'd talk about bad or not so good ones. I'm sure everyone's been to a show that just plain sucked. So I'll list my Top 5 Worst Shows chronologically.

1. The Why Store (1996) - I was in 8th grade and went with my then-boyfriend. It was in a high school gymnasium and the show consisted mainly of local bands doing covers and The Why Store headlined. At least I think that's what they were called. They weren't good enough to really remember. We ended up going to the top of the bleachers and waited for my mom to pick us up.

2. The Elms (2000) - I went to high school with the guys in this band, so naturally they played in our high school gym. The crowd sucked, the band sucked... everything sucked. They had a big following when they were called Just Visiting (though I'd never heard their stuff), so I figured they'd be decent. I was wrong, as usual.

3. Ben Kweller (2003) - When I went, it was only because a few friends of mine were really big fans. I thought his music was decent, and it was only going to cost $12. So we got there about twenty hours early (because they wanted to be right up front) and we ended up standing outside in the cold for an eon. We were the first ones inside though. The opening acts were great (The Pieces, Brendan Benson and the Well Fed Boys). Ben Kweller on the other hand, not so decent. It took almost an hour to set up the stage (probably because they had only one guy doing it; it seems Mr. Kweller is too big a star to help out), and when he finally came out he was smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer (obviously drunk) and acted like everything was great. Needless to say, one of my friends and I stayed for only three songs and decided to leave while our other friends stayed.

4. The Juliana Theory (2003) - A friend of mine was dating their sound engineer, so she was able to get me and two other friends into the show for free. My roomate at the time had one of their albums, but otherwise I wasn't a huge fan (though I like most of their stuff now). It was at Bogart's (an awesome venue), so that was a plus. Further Seems Forever was one of the openers and The Ataris were headlining. When we got there, it was early and we went to get food, but then instead of going to watch the first two bands we ended up staying on their bus watching television with the guys. Pretty boring stuff. We caught The Juliana Theory's set which was decent, but then we ended up right back in the bus. I ended up going back in to catch some of The Ataris because I was always a big fan of theirs and didn't want the night to be a total waste. Afterwards, back out by the bus, I got to see Kris Roe of The Ataris play with his daughter which was adorable, but then we ended up right back on the bus watching a Pitt basketball game and drinking beer. Definately not a great show in my book. It's cool hanging out with bands, but I really like the music more.

5. The Army of Freshmen (2003) - I think to date I've been to eight of their shows, and all have been great except one. I'm not sure if it counts though because they didn't show up. I'm working on a documentary about local music scenes, and Chris Jay offered to help out. To give some leeway and lower my stress I figured I'd devote a weekend to following them around on part of their tour with Bowling For Soup. On Thursday night I drove 2 1/2 hours to Cincinatti to catch them at Bogart's. We decided to hold off on stuff and shoot for the next two shows. So afterwards I drove back home because I had class the next morning, and after Friday's classes I drove to Columbus as a halfway point for the Saturday night show in Pittsburg. Saturday night there was absolutely nowhere available for us to get anything accomplished so we decided that the Sunday show in Chicago would be great because they were off the Bowling For Soup tour that day and we'd have tons of time to do stuff. So I left the Pittsburg show in the middle of Bowling For Soup's set (I'm not a fan) with plans to meet up with the guys the next day in Chicago. Not fifteen minutes after I'd left, the manager from Bowling For Soup asked Army of Freshmen to finish up the tour. Me, being stupid, hadn't given Chris my cell phone number so he couldn't let me know. I ended up driving all the way to Chicago only to find out from Short Arm Trick (a band at that show) that AOF was in Cleveland. I was tired and frustrated and got didn't even stay for the show. I drove back home and went to bed. Chris apologized like crazy when he could finally email me. I was pissed at first, but I got over it and hold no animosity toward him or the rest of the guys. They're still one of my favorite bands and when they hit the road for the their next tour, I'll go to the shows.

So that's my experiences. Anybody else had some not so good ones?

Sarah

Alone I'll stand as they all dance. I've tangoed one too many times; the floor is just not for me. Forget me, girl. I'm still recovering from her. It hurts so. I'm sorry, girl. I'm in no shape to love. It's not you, it's her.

Postby bowieinberlin » Fri Jan 23, 2004 3:05 pm

Heh, Sarah, I had a similarly bad Ben Kweller experience. When I was gearing up for Bonnaroo (a whole 13 hours before departure since that's the only notice I had), I was studying the lineup. I really liked all the rock bands they had lined up like Sonic Youth, The Polyphonic Spree, Liz Phair, the Lips, etc. I was excited to see Kweller because a friend of mine is always saying how awesome he is.

Well, he sucked. Don't get me wrong, the kid is cute as a button, but his songs bored me -- especially in a live setting. Boring, boring, boring.

Liz Phair also sucked. This was a big letdown for me. I mean c'mon, "Exile in Guyville" -- so good. Too bad the corporate machine (aka The Matrix) ate all her creativity. The songs were flat, boring and stupid. At least I got to meet her after the show and she's extra hot in person. Her only saving grace, I suppose.

I was also totally let down by My Morning Jacket. Again, boring. But I'm willing to give them a second chance.

Many years earlier I was really really disappointed with Guided By Voices. I don't know what was up, because they are supposed to be bad-ass live. Maybe it was the venue.

Which leads me to another factor in bad live shows: the venue. My Sunny Day Real Estate (circa '98), Mr. Bungle ('99), and Godspeed You Black Emperor ('02) experiences all sucked because of shitty venues. Bleh.

Brendon Benson, wasn't he the one playing when Jack White beat the crap out of Jason Stollsteimer?

Hey People,

It's kinda hard to top my 1st concert: The Bangles & Cyndi Lauper in Miami sometime in the early 80's. I was around between 4-6 and I remember watching the concert on my dad's shoulders.

Most amazing shows:

-Garbage(5) 1998-2003. I love Garbage but I worship Shirley Manson. They just get better every time I see them.

-Lauryn Hill 1999? The Roots opened and Ms. Hill put on an amazing show.

-U2 PopMart(1) & Elevation Tour(3). The third time I saw them was in Baltimore a month after 9/11. I flew home from Florida scared out of my mind but hellbent on seeing Garbage and U2. Garbage had to cancel but U2 put on the most emotional show ever, I cried my eyes out and so did pretty much everyone else.

-The White Stripes 2003. To put on such an amazing show surrounded by only a handful of real fans and a majority of posers/morons was a sight to behold. People moshing to Jack & Meg instead of listening and appreciating their musical genius.

-CKY 2003, I knew some of their songs but wasn't a real "fan". Saw them in Tally in the smallest club in the city and they blew me away.

-Prodigy 1997? Small club in DC crammed so full of people you couldn't even move. They put on a good show but the best part happened in the crowd during the show.

Worst shows:

-Cornershop, Opened for Oasis and everyone booed them off the stage after an agonizing 5 minutes.:sleep

-Really crappy band that opened for No Doubt at Brixton Academy in 2002. Little teenybopper girls shrieking for the fat, ugly lead singer. Oh yeah, and their music sucked too.

-Britney Spears, A huge "Duh!" but the tickets and food were free so a group of us went. You could tell she was lipsynching even from where we were and the shrieking made your head want to pop. Left after 25 minutes and felt ripped off.

Love sings us a song, but we fail to sing along

Wherever you go I will follow

that thread has been dead for quite some time now...

but

i went to a show last week, drove 3 hours to attend it (and meet someone from the net, so awesome trip!)

it's a group i've started listening to like a little bit more than a year ago, Tegan and Sara, canadian twins

(who are both gay, i mean not that it's important, but it does influences the audience!)

anyway they were totally AWESOME!!! they are very talented and funny, both pretty important factors to a good show..!

if anyone wants to check them out, they have the official website: teganandsara. com (there's also a .net and .org sites)

the group that opened for them was The No No Spots, never heard of them before that night, but they were interesting in their style.

Couldn't agree more about Tegan and Sara, saw them again last week for about the seventh or eighth time and they were as good as they've ever been. The new cd, So Jealous, is irresistible. My good deed for the day would be to recommend that all of you give it a listen. It can only improve your day.

Also saw Rilo Kiley the other night and loved them too. Tomorrow is Auf Der Maur and the Von Bondies, and next week the Concretes. Lots of fun shows happening here.

I'm about to have a concert experience that I've never had before. At the very last minute I now have two spare ticket's for the Scissor Sister's gig at the Barrowlands in Glasgow. I want to sell them on to people, at cost price, but am not sure how to do it.

Anyone have any tips about how to do this? I would have ebayed them but it's a bit too late for that. I've had friends who have sold tickets outside venue's before but they've told me that it can get a bit nasty, especially at sold out gig's.

Any suggestion's gratefully received.

I have been to many great concerts like

- Atreyu

- Evanescence

- 311

- Usher

- D-12

- Little john

- T.A.T.U

Atreyu rocked all the way. Evanescence was awsome. 311 were great. Well I guess they were all great in some way.

I've been very lucky when it comes to live music. I can't really rate all the concerts I've been to, but I attended several pop concerts when I was young (N SYNC, before they were famous; Britney, snuck to the very front and literally watched the show with Steps, who opened for her, quite a thrill at the time :) ; and Backstreet Boys, was "lucky" enough to meet them, again, a thrill at the time). However, since I started at uni four years ago I've been a folk fest junky and have seen some really, really cool acts: Ani Difranco, Melissa Ferrick, Indigo Girls, Janice Ian, Tegan and Sara, Ember Swift, Jane Siberry, Painting Dasies, Ruthie Foster, The Corb Lund Band and The Waifs, among others. I just love folk fests, there's such a sense of intimacy.

blackeyedwillow - Thanks for the tip, I'll try that next time. In the end I just tried selling them in a few bars. When we got to the venue there were quite a lot of people outside wanting tickets so we got rid of them easily enough. I've seen the Scissor Sister's a few time's before and they never disappoint. It was a great gig, until my sister decided tequila shots would be a good idea, and I don't remember much after that. Best time I saw them was at T in the Park. Jake came on stage wearing a tartan table cloth in the style of a kilt and proceeded to take his underpants off so he'd be a 'true' Scotsman. He had stripped entirely by the end of the set.

thrilledbymaclay - Ani DiFranco joins the Scissor Sisters in my very select list of live acts that I've seen more than once. She's brilliant. Any time I've seen her she's reworked her material so it feels like I'm listening to new songs every tour.

"Aunt Fiona, why do we support a football team that never scores?" - My nephew after watching a Scotland soccer international. He makes a fair point.
