Part 5 - Tara        When Tara has seen the last of Willow's back down the stairs, she stepped back into the apartment. She sighed inwardly and wondered what she was going to do for the rest of the day. Her eyes wondered round the empty living room and spotted Miss Kitty sitting contently on the window sill over looking the busy street down below. Willow was probably driving out her car at that instant though her scent still lingered in the room. Tara moved over to where the kitten sat and let her gaze fall onto the red car that was driving away along with the redhead. Kitty meowed loudly. Like she knew Willow was leaving. Tara scratched the kitten's chin absentmindedly.
"I know Miss Kitty. That's Willow on her first day of work." Tara spoke while not taking her eyes off the car until it turned a corner and disappeared. "Wanna watch me do the dishes?" Tara started to scoop the kitten into her hands just when the phone rang. She couldn’t get to the phone in time before the voice machine took over.
"Hi," came Willow's voice. They had recorded their greeting message the day before out of fun. "Tara and I can't come to the phone right now. We are busy. The naked kind… "
"Hello!" Tara quickly picked up the receiver after taking three huge strides towards the offending machine. She knew how the rest of the message went. What was between naked and the end of the message, you won't want to know. Or at least Tara wasn’t planning on letting anyone know. She blushed furiously while remembering every detail of the message. Sure enough, it involved some kind of kinkiness. Somewhere along the line of soft breasts and warm cuddles. She couldn’t believe neither of them remembered to delete Willow's playful greeting.
"Tara?! I can call back later if you are occupied." Dawn broke out laughing.
        "Dawnie!"
"You are not naked are you?" Dawn asked half seriously.
"Don’t you have school or something young lady?" Tara retorted. But she was very glad Dawn called. She wanted to call the Slayer's Family but was too busy with the move and the cleaning up.
"Yes I have to go to school in 5 minutes." Something in Dawn's voice said she missed Tara a lot.
"I missed you Dawnie." Tara spoke.
"I miss you too Tara. So how's New York." Dawn tried to sound nonchalant. She didn’t like the rumbling in her tummy whenever she remembered the couple was no longer staying with her. But she understood the part was inevitable. She didn’t want to be the one holding them back.
"Everything is fine here. Willow just went to work. Its her first day and she's very excited. But you know its not quite the same without you around." Tara confessed. Over their short period of stay in New York, she has been going about the apartment thinking Dawn would pop up somewhere. When she was the supermarket with Willow, she briefly considered buying peanut butter because Dawn loves them.
"Maybe I can visit during the holidays?" Dawn suggested hopefully.
"That's not even a question young lady! You must come! If Buffy is ok with it of course."
"Ok cool! I will check with Buffy although the holidays are 3 months away." Dawn groaned inwardly. "I have to go. Send my love to Willow."
"Have fun in school! Call whenever you can. Take care!"
"I will! You too! Bye!" Dawn hung up the phone before the tears that welled up in her eyes threatened to fall.
Tara hung up the phone carefully. She walked purposefully into the kitten. There was battling of the dishes to be done. Tara doesn’t hate doing the dishes but nobody loves doing them neither. However it was still something to be done. She decided to finish up quickly and go explore the neighbourhood again.
Half and hour late, Tara stepped out of the apartment. She had a simple blue sweater on. She fumbled into her bag to look for the keys. It was somewhere in there.
"Bye sweetie. I will be back in 2 weeks. Take care." Tara heard a man's voice along the corridor. She glanced up behind and noticed it was the couple she saw the other day on the stairs. They stayed in the apartment adjacent to her's. She saw the man kiss the lady on the cheek routinely. With a luggage in hand, he strode past Tara without taking a
look at her. Tara turned her attention back to her bag.
"Tara?" Someone called out on the same floor. When Tara glanced up again, she and the lady were the only ones around. "You must be Tara right? Shane said you have beautiful blond hair." The lady walked over to her barefooted with an outstretched hand. "I'm Lynn." There was something about Lynn that made you want to look at her. Thin was the only possible word to describe her. She has silky brown hair that almost reached her waist. Her eyes exude the most childlike expression, but there was some sadness in her smile. She would look like a lost child if she were 5 years old. But Lynn must be around 25 or 26.
"Oh hi. Yes I'm Tara. Nice to meet you." Tara smiled at her neighbour's friendliness. She noted Lynn was wearing a white sleeveless top that did nothing to hide her small tanned frame. Those red batik wide pants seemed to make her legs endlessly long.
"That's Vincent." Lynn pointed aimlessly down the stairs. My husband."
Tara nodded and gave a reassuring smile. Being apart can never be easy. "You should meet Willow someday."
"Is that red BMW boxster her's? Never seen it before down at the carpark." Lynn giggled.
"Yes it her's. She's absolutely in love with it."
"Great car! I wanted one myself. But Vincent doesn’t like me driving convertibles. You should put on more clothes. Its cold outside."
"Oh is it? Ok. Thanks for your heads up." Tara started to open the door.
"Hey, I'm having a party on Friday at my place. Do come by with Willow ok?"
"Sure! We would love to come."
"See you around then!" Lynn turned and walked back into her own place.
Tara nodded eagerly. She stepped into the apartment to reach for her scarf. She hates walking in the cold. At least when she's alone. Willow wasn’t around to huddle together. Her thoughts drifted to Willow again. She missed the redhead. She wondered how was the first day of work.
