Chapter 10

Rating: NC17

Spoilers: All eps are now fair game.

Disclaimer: I own nothing but that which I create. All else belongs to people who can sue/excommunicate/execute me if I don’t write this.

Disclaimer #2: I am going to mess about with the ideas of religion in this fic, this is not intended to offend anyone, or contradict anyone’s beliefs, but it’s necessary for the story. I apologise in advance for any offence taken.

Summary: Anya has to explain

Feedback: Send all constructive comments to rmmik@hotmail.com (please put something like “Re: your fic” in the subject, otherwise I’ll bin it). Send all abuse to someone else.

Authors note: I don’t like Season Six’s ending (obviously), so here’s my way of making things better. Eventually. After much angst. But hopefully you’ll like the W/T bits. The happy ones I mean. Hold on tight!

The Slayer paced impatiently.

“Does somebody want to tell me what just happened?”

Anya had taken Willow into the back room, locked them in and not a peep had been heard for about an hour. Buffy wasn’t the only one panicking. Giles looked about ready to break down the door, and Xander was right behind him. Dawn stood off to one side with Buffy, thoroughly shaken by the whole thing.

After several more minutes waiting, Buffy lost patience. Her best friend was behind that door, after all.

The door slammed open.

“You could have just knocked. Now you’ll wake her up.” Anya observed dryly.

Willow was curled in Anya’s lap like a little girl, asleep. The tear-tracks down both their faces belied the silence that had emanated from the room earlier. Willow stirred briefly and snuggled down again. Anya stood carefully, and with a grace that surprised all present, laid her down on the vaulting horse and tiptoed out, bemused Scoobies in tow.

Anya closed the door quietly, and turned to face her friends.

“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?”

Anya sighed. This was obviously going to take a while.

“Sit down. Look, I only know what Kel taught me. What Willow experienced was a Link, a meeting of souls. It is very rare, and only happens under extreme conditions, either pain or happiness. Tara is in Hell.” She emphasised the word. “It was bound to happen at some point. In fact, I’m surprised it’s taken this long.”

“Great, but what was it?”

“Willow experienced what Tara was seeing in Hell.”

“And that was?” Buffy asked, impatiently

“Us. Hurting Tara. You especially.”

“ME? Hurting Tara? I’ll kill them.”

“Yep. Willow tried to kill her, so did Xander, so did you, so did I.”

Buffy’s fists clenched and unclenched. She couldn’t stand the idea that someone had made one of her friends think she would hurt them.

Don’t I do that enough in real life?

“Listen to me, Buffy. What Willow just experienced would have killed her if I hadn’t stopped it. No mortal can survive a full Linking when it’s due to pain. Pleasure, yes. Pain, no. It would have killed her. And it isn’t a pretty way to die. Believe me.”

Giles studied her for a second, the obvious distress on her face reminding her of something, someone…

“You were there, weren’t you? When Kel was…”

Anya locked eyes with him for a moment and nodded. Giles sighed.

Buffy was getting very confused. And also very pissed off.

“Right, someone is going to explain what the hell is going on and no-one is leaving until they do.”

“Buffy,” said Anya, clearly the only one with a semblance of a clue, “what Willow just experienced would have literally torn the living soul out of her body and dragged it to Tara. She saw through Tara’s eyes, and vice versa, which is why Tara was able to break the Link. She-“

“That’s great, but what was Giles talking about? You were there when Kel…what?”

{{The last of the coven members trudged away, gathering their belongings as they went. She turned slowly to face the woman opposite, still standing, naked, proud, the infuriating smirk in place.

“Why?”}}

“When she was exiled. From Heaven. I was there. She Linked with me.”

“Oh.”

The door to the back room opened slowly, and a very pale, drained looking Willow came through.

“Hey, guys.”

The Slayer looked from Willow to Anya to Giles and back again. The two women both wore the same look, one of absolute exhaustion. She stared at Anya, who was obviously still caught in the past, in a memory just as bad as what Willow had just lived through.

“Why not? All you ever do is whine. I was looking for a quick ride, something to take my mind off things and I got lumbered with you. Do you know what they’ve been saying at the High Council the last year or two? That I’d get my reward for being with a filthy demon soon enough. Well they were right, I’m being exiled thanks to you … BITCH!” }}

“You okay? Anya?”

Giles watched as Anya expression twisted, she was clearly remembering. He tried to push down his own emotions, tried not to remember what he had seen, what Kel had gone through. He failed.

{{ “You violated the first code of your being. You broke every sacred oath you have ever taken, and you stand here before us accused of the highest sacrilege. You have become as corrupt as those you must protect, and broken the trust granted you by the High One. Do you confess and accept your punishment?”

“Yes.”

“And do you accept the banishment?”

“Yes.”

“And…do you accept your assignment?”

The assembled crowd took in a breath.

“Yes.”

“Very well then. We shall proceed. Are you ready?”

“Yes.”

Giles watched as his son came forward, and Kel knelt before him. Her shoulders tensed slightly as her wings expanded. Standing again, she unsheathed her sword, and extinguished the flames. Facing Lucifer, she handed it to him and spoke, ceremonially.

“I have sinned, and must be punished. I accept my fate and thank the High Council for my chance to redeem myself. I will not fail you.”

Two large figures moved forward to restrain her, but Lucifer shook his head. Kel knelt again and spread her arms, flexing her wings to their maximum length. Sighing, her brother rose the sword.

“I’m sorry, Kel.”

The sword came down.}}

“GILES!”

Buffy shook him again. He had been unresponsive for a little over a minute, and the Slayer was panicking. Anya was slumped in a chair next to Willow, their expressions identical.

“Give him a minute, Buffy, he’ll come around.”

Anya looked weary, but spoke with knowledge.

“What is it?”

“He’s remembering. Leave him be.”

Willow took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to regain some control over her body. The action drew the Slayer’s attention, and she immediately came over and knelt down so she was on eye level.

“Hey, you okay, Wills?”

“No. She hurt so bad, Buffy. I tried to kill her, and she was going to let me.”

Buffy noticed how shaky and clammy she was, but her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes seemed to glitter.

“Will, do you…feel…different?”

To her surprise, Willow blushed.

“Um…well…Tara, she…you know I’ve been feeling her emotions? Well, um, whatever they showed her, it…it wasn’t all bad.”

Buffy frowned.

“How is that possible?”

Anya answered for Willow.

“They like to build up hope, and happiness. It makes breaking their spirits more…volatile. You should understand that.”

Buffy thought about this for a moment, remembering the total despair at being ripped from Heaven, and nodded.

“So, Tara was…home, yes? With Willow? I’m assuming they…”

“Had sex? Yup. Lots of it, by the sound of things. And Willow felt it, and kept quiet. Sneaky girl.” Anya sounded quite proud of Willow’s abilities, although she was still ashen.

Willow mouth hung open as her face turned a very interesting shade of purple, and decided a subject change was in order.

“Something happened, though. I-“

Giles sat upright suddenly, his eyes dull but aware. He looked about him, then relaxed.

“Welcome back,” Anya said with a faint smile.

“You were saying?”

“ I felt something, like Tara was draining me, somehow.”

Anya thought for a moment, then nodded.

“She took spiritual energy. She probably didn’t even realise, but she took some of you to keep herself sane. Pity she didn’t know how when Glory was around. I wouldn’t worry.”

Willow frowned. She was sure it was more than that, and the feeling she was having from Tara confirmed it. Something was happening, something important. Unknown to her, the Slayer was having the same thoughts. Her spidey sense was tingling gently, and she could only come to one conclusion.

Something is coming.

First, your ez-codes aren't working :(

Secondly... I read this update and was left wondering what (if anything) actually happened. Most of it was background update Giles/Kel/Anya, but I can't figure out why Kel thought she done something bad.

and if Giles or Anya knew differently, why didn't they speak up ? If I remember correctly (big IF) Anya said a couple of updates ago that Kel was set up somehow. Which makes Anya and Giles bad 'cos they didn't do anything to help her ??

Whats happening to Tara ? I thought the happy thoughts came before the pain, seems Willow received them in reverse order. Tara will feel so guilty about causing Willow pain even though she didn't intend it :( Never mind her using some of Willow's spirit to remain sane... sane Tara is good :)

Okay peeps, sorry it's been so long but I'[ve been recovering from the holidays. Who needs a hangover when you've got small children wanting to play with you?: But the bruises are mostly healed and the cut over my eye is fading(the kids in my family are very affectionate, and of course violent) so I thought I'd distract myself from revision. I know Willow hasnt featured much lately, but we're getting there. So here y'are.

“DUCK!”

Tara ducked. The huge axe sailed harmlessly over her head.

“Thanks!”

Kel nodded briefly, then finished decapitating the Bulshaki currently trying to procreate with her.

“Really, I don’t think it would have worked. Half-breeds are always trouble,” She said to his twitching corpse. Tara grinned.

Wiping her sword on the ground, Kel strode over to Tara.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. This is easier than it looks.”

“Speak for yourself!” Kel pretended to be offended.

“Well, if you want some help-“

“NO! We’ve had this discussion.”

“So stop complaining.”

Kel stuck her tongue out. Tara smiled. They walked ahead for a while, silently listening for the sounds of a battle, or a predator stalking them. Kel glanced at Tara from time to time, and each time Tara would raise an eyebrow and Kel would shrug apologetically. This silent communication continued for a while until Kel held up a hand.

“We’re here.”

“I know that. Where is here?”

“The desert of eternity. Luc’s palace is on the other side, and we can get home from there. Fancy a hike?”

Tara looked at the desert. Or at least tried to. Her eyes refused to see it at first, but soon she adjusted. She gasped as her mind tried to comprehend the sight before her.

“It’s…there’s no horizon.”

“I know. That’s why it’s called the desert of eternity, dumbass. There is no end. It’s always a few miles ahead.”

“Oh. So how do we cross it if it doesn’t end?”

“Good question. Let’s start walking, maybe I’ll remember.” She walked off.

Tara rolled her eyes affectionately, and followed after. Finally, the end was…well, not exactly in sight, but at least they knew it was there. Soon, she would see Willow again. She began to go over the things she was going to say for the thousandth time. Looking down, she regarded her figure with a critical eye.

This should be fun to explain. She thought sarcastically.

Oh well. She loves me. Grinning, she sped up. She couldn’t wait to see Willow and the gang again.

They stopped in a spot of sand like every other in the desert, and Tara promptly collapsed, the spasmodic pains finally taking their toll.

“How long has it been?” Tara asked plaintively.

“Three weeks, Giles. THREE! Do you want to know how long that is down there? ‘Cause I worked it out. And there were about nine figures in the answer. Do you see where I’m going with this?”

“Buffy, please be calmer. We know that Kel is down there. If I know my daughter, Tara is fine. In fact, they are probably on their way home. I know you don’t like to sit around and do nothing, but there is nothing to be done, except have patience.”

“I can’t be patient, Kel, this HURTS!” Tara yelled.

“I know, but there isn’t anything else to be done. Hold on…there…that’s it! That’s Chaos!”

“That’s what?”

“The palace!”

“Are you sure?”

“I should know, I designed it. We can do this, Tara, we can get home.”

“Great, but I have something more important to do right now.”

“Right, sorry.”

The sound of crying filled the whole space.

Willow wept softly in her sleep, and turned further into the protection of her best friend. It had been an unspoken agreement that Willow would stay with Buffy at night, as she was unable to face the constant nightmares alone. For her part, Buffy was almost ecstatic to finally be doing something to help her friend, but she hated seeing Willow so distraught. Every whimper and moan as her friend cried was like a blow, and she dearly wished to rip that Lucifer apart for the pain he was causing both women. Willow would tell her how much it hurt to feel Tara’s pain, and Buffy would often cry right along with her. Sometimes it was so bad she wanted to beat Giles to a bloody pulp just for bringing that…monster into the world. She truly hated him at these moments, not just for what he had done to Willow and Tara, but for the fact he made her want to hurt the people she loved.

He really is Satan.

Tara and Kel trudged forward, not even bothering to look at the palace, because it never got any closer. Kel had said the only way to get to the palace was not to try, then gone off on a rant with herself, as she argued back and forth as to whether she was right. It was like she had schizophrenia. Eventually all three of them, Tara included, had just decided to walk until an answer presented itself. That was six years ago. To distract herself, Tara mused on the particulars of the spell Kel had cast. The effects were in tune with her dimension, so –

A loud squall cut off her train of thought. Tara set down the burden on her back and rooted around in it, finally finding the water flask. The squalling baby Clisch’k demon came over to investigate.

“Shoo!”

The animal gave her a hurt look and wandered off, giving its call every few minutes. Its mother finally answered, and Tara signalled Kel that they should hurry. Baby Clisch’k were friendly, but their parents were not. Kel nodded, adjusted her own back sling and paced ahead. They were so intent on getting away that they didn’t notice they had reached the palace until Kel literally walked into it.

“We’re here.”

“I noticed.”

“Ready to go home?”

“Lead the way.”

That got me thinking a bit. I if/when they make it home the difference between Tara and Willow will be HUGE. Tara has god knows how many years worth of rather unpleasant memories, however is she going to deal with that ? How is Willow going to help her do that ?

Giles commenting on Kel with "if I know my daughter", thats the problem you see... he obviously didn't know his son very well... do the math. Good thing we know that Kel is actually taking good care of Tara, poor girl would be all alone otherwise :(

Best not think to much long-term about this fic, makes you all depressed :(

Still re-union should be nice, it's the stuff after it that worries me.

True, but did anyone notice the stuff 'Buffy' said in the fake Sunnydale? she said the same thing that chapter, and Tara wasn't worried. I'm being devious and dropping hints about stuff like Luc and Kel's past and Willow and Tara's future throughout the early chapters, so rereading might be a good idea if you get confused. I've had to do it myself. The next chapter is off to beta and there's a bit you're gonna love...Tara kicking Luc's butt!!!:grin :smash You go girl!!!!!!!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jonathan paced around the basement, trying to figure out a way to stop Warren. They had found one of the demons who possessed the orbs wandering in the woods, and as soon as they discovered where their lair was and how to get in, Warren would have the orbs. Jonathan refused to kid himself about that, as Andrew obviously was, he knew once Warren had power, he would have no reason to keep them on board. Warren had already demonstrated his willingness to kill, and with superpowers, who could stop him?

Picard had it easy, he thought. He had phasers and deflectors and torpedoes.

Warren was relying on him to use his magic to find the lair, and as soon as the demon told them how to get in, that would become the only thing keeping him alive. He considered telling the Slayer, but why would she believe him? Besides, she had been strangely absent for the past few days. He hadn’t seen Willow in class either, so something must be up. Maybe they would help…no. This was his problem. He would deal with it.

Kel rammed the wall again. This was the last obstacle in their journey home, and it was fairly pathetic. A six foot wall behind which stood her brother. She would have to fight him but nothing was ever easy here. Pathetic, but not easy. The final blow came and the wall tumbled, and there he was. Lucifer. Tara growled.

“I’m gonna kill you!”

She launched herself at him, fists and feet flying. Kel watched calmly. Just because she had to fight him to get home, didn’t mean she wasn’t going to let Tara soften him up first. Besides, he deserved it. She grinned and watched Tara wreak her vengeance.

Tara finally stepped back, watching the bloody mess that was the face of the Devil start to heal. Kel stepped forward, greeting her younger brother jovially.

“Yo, bro. You’re a mess. Gonna let us pass, or do I get to hurt you as well? Do you remember what happened last time we had a fight?”

Lucifer winced, then smirked. He looked over the ruin of his palace, and sighed.

“Okay sis, you win. You can take Tara home.”

A portal began to open up behind him. But instead of showing Earth, hundreds of demons poured out. Bulshaki, Kanshak, Clisch’k, a few that were so ferocious they didn’t even have names. They stood in orderly ranks behind Luc, who was grinning.

“Go ahead. Go back. All you have to do is get past them.”

Another portal appeared behind them, and through the shimmering light, they could see…

Willow gasped, and stood up, spilling water all down her white top .

“Not again?” Giles asked, worried.

“No…they’re coming.”

“When?”

“Now. Anya…MOVE!”

Anya had been sitting at the research table, but at Willow’s panicked look she skittered over to the counter, just in time, as a huge glittering portal opened up and swallowed the table whole. The Scooby gang stared as the blurry image sharpened, became real. They could see into Hell. They stared in amazement for a few seconds, until Lucifer came into view.

“You just have to get past them.”

‘Them’ was demons, thousands of demons, none under seven feet tall. And just beyond them stood two figures, weapons drawn, staring at the masses of creatures blankly. Finally, Tara looked up, into the portal, and saw home.

Kel turned to Tara.

“He says we have to get past them.”

Tara grinned. “Then let’s go.”

The two figures disappeared into the fray. There were bellows and screams and the occasional feral war cry. Tara and Kel were nowhere to be seen, but their progress could be tracked by the bodies being flung aside. What seemed like hours passed, all the Scoobs watching the flashes of gold that would appear momentarily as the demons were felled.

Finally, after an age of fighting and blood, only a small cavalcade of demons remained, the most vicious, elite, horrible creatures the Army of Hell could produce. Tara and Kel stood back to back as they were surrounded by about twenty vicious looking things with weapons beyond description. They seemed to be a cross between maces, whips, crossbows and thumbscrews, and possibly semi-automatic machine guns. Lucifer stepped forward.

“So, Kel, what’s this secret weapon you’ve been planning to use?”

Kel recoiled.

“What,” Luc smirked. “You didn’t think we’d read your mind? Wrong. We know you’ve got something planned, what is it?”

This time it was Kel that smirked.

“The only thing that can defeat them,” She indicated the hulking forms surrounding them.

“And that would be?”

Tara and Kel smiled, and spoke in unison.

“Love.”

And the fight began.

It was to fast to follow. Sometimes the brawl would draw tantalisingly close, sometimes it would drift frighteningly away. Finally it was within fifteen feet of the portal, and they could just see Kel fighting in time to her singing. She was singing ‘Unchained Melody’, and it was clear the demons didn’t like it. Something flew through the air and hit the barrier with a loud thud. It was Tara. Apparently no-one could cross until the fight was over, one way or the other.

Tara stood, shook herself off, and faced the portal. Willow faced her on the other side. Everything else fell away, the noise, the stench, the blood, all of it. There she was.

“Willow,” She whispered.

Willow heard Tara call her name, heard the reverence in her tone, heard herself whisper answeringly;

“Tara.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Willow saw a huge beast break free of the fray, aim squarely at her love, and fire.

Tara saw the horror enter Willow’s eyes just as she felt the curved, spiked arrow rip through her shoulder, spattering Willow with her blood. That could go through, apparently. The liquid seeped into the fabric of Willow’s shirt, beginning to dry immediately.

“Your shirt,” She whispered.

A thousand thoughts ran through Willow’s head.

Killing Warren, Buffy, Xander, temple, blood, heart, Tara, Tara, Tara, dead……..

“No,” she whispered.

Tara pressed her hand desperately against the barrier between them, and Willow did the same.

I love you

She mouthed it gently, and gripped the spike that protruded from her shoulder.

No, Tara no.

Tara ripped the spike from her flesh, and ran back into the fray, grabbing the demon that had shot her.

“That was my favourite Willow-shirt, you jerk!”

Grabbing it firmly by the head, she proceeded to teach it a lesson in manners it wouldn’t soon forget.

“DO YOU HAVE ANY”

THWACK

“IDEA”

THUMP

“HOW HARD”

CRUNCH

“IT IS”

SNAP

“TO GET BLOOD”

SLAP

“OUT OF THAT”

GRIIIIIIIND

“MATERIAL?!”

BOOM. The demon dropped to the floor, dead. The others stopped suddenly, and stared at Tara and their fallen comrade. As one, they turned and ran. Lucifer pouted.

“Fine. Go.”

Kel and Tara looked at each other once, and both hit him, laying him out flat, unconscious.

The veil lifted. They raced forward.

Tara was running so fast that instead of stopping, she slowed just enough to sweep Willow up and press her against the counter, kissing her for all she was worth. She had planned out a huge long speech, carefully listing everything she wanted to say, but now only one thing mattered.

“Tell me you love me.” She whispered against Willow’s lips.

“I love you.”

“Now tell me this is real.”

Willow hesitated.

“Well, I usually wake up about this time, so let’s wait and see.”

“It’s real, Tara,” Kel said, limping over to the counter and flopping into a chair.

“I wouldn’t be here otherwise.”

Tara laughed out loud in joy, and kissed Willow again, not caring that everyone was staring, not caring that she was injured, not caring about anything but Willow.

“Um, as much as I’m sure Xander would love to see you two go down on each other in public, I think Willow needs to breathe.” Kel’s dry humour cut through, bringing them back to reality. Soon Tara found herself n the middle of a pile of friends, all laughing and crying and hugging and kissing, until finally they stood separate, grinning like loonies, simply enjoying being together again, being The Gang once more. Being complete.

After a few minutes had passed, Kel hopped off the stool she had commandeered and headed for the door, limping as though she had sprained her ankle.

“Hold it!” Anya’s voice stopped her dead.

“I have to go.”

“Not until you show me your leg.”

Kel sighed, resigned, and pulled herself onto a table, rolling up the loose animal skin trousers she had fashioned. The bone was broken in three places, and had broken the skin, sticking out like a jagged splinter of rock.

“It’s nothing. It was a good fight.”

Anya raised an eyebrow. Xander looked puzzled.

“What’s the difference between a good fight and a bad one?”

Kel fixed him with an even stare.

“I still have all my limbs attached, don’t I?”

Xander gulped.

“Well, you’re going nowhere until you get that leg fixed.”

Kel forcibly straightened her leg. It made a horrid crunching noise and the bone disappeared under the skin.

“There. All better.”

She jumped up and headed for the door, not even limping any more.

“How long?” Tara asked.

“A week. Two at most.”

“See ya later, then.”

“Bye.”

She walked out, and was gone.

Postby Grimlock72 » Mon Jan 13, 2003 11:58 am

Hmm... okaaaay... so the demons didn't like Kel's singing, wonder why :)

Seems they had little trouble with the "thousands" of demons, which either makes the demons weak or the number overestimated. Even if you're very strong you WILL eventually get tired of killing stupid demons. The image of tracking their progress by seeing bodies fly away was fun though, heh.

Best part was Tara getting pissed of at the demon who bloodied Willow's shirt, hehe. Nothing wrong with assertive Tara, no sireee.... Still I'm mighty curious what will happen between Willow and Tara next. Hmm... does Tara still look the same (except for her clothing of course) ? I'm not too worried about them still feeling for each other though...

Is Kel industructable in both dimensions ? What about Tara's injuries, are those gone upon entering the real dimension or will she need medical care ? (if so, she'll need a LOT)

Hmm... I have to re-read this fic to catch hidden clues ?? I guess I'll busy then, heh... or I could just trust you and assume all will be allright.. choices choices choices...

Oh dear, pissed off Tara was just too cute :grin

Wondering, now that Tara is where she is, does she heal, or should they be running off to the hospital.

Finally, the expression of love. :love Should be interesting to see where this goes now!

Authors note: I don’t like Season Six’s ending (obviously), so here’s my way of making things better. Eventually. After much angst. But hopefully you’ll like the W/T bits. The happy ones I mean. Hold on tight!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Willow stood an arms’ length from Tara, looking her over. She had no visible injuries except a small cut along her eyebrow and a slight bruise on her throat. What concerned her more, though, was the wound she had received in the shoulder.

“Can I?”

Tara nodded. Willow peeled back the rough shirt over her shoulder, where a small round hole was evident, just above the collarbone. It has gone straight through her flesh and was already partly healed. Willow’s hand rested gently over her heart.

“How…this is healing faster than Buffy does!”

Tara blushed.

“Erm…th-there’s a…a spell. Kel did it. It increases my natural healing ability.”

“And this?”

Willow pulled the shirt down a little further, revealing a deep blue flowing line just over her heart. Tara blushed some more.

“Um, it was when Kel first found me, near where…um, there was a cave with some demons in, she killed them. I’d just been told that there was a way home, and I didn’t believe it. I asked Kel to give me this, to stop me doubting. It’s her writing.”

Xander peered closer and saw the line was in fact old-fashioned flowing script.

“How did you get a tattoo in Hell? Are there like, demon tattoo parlours?”

“Um, no. There’s a whole bunch of dentists and hairdressers, but no tattoo parlours. Kel used demon blood.”

“You had my name tattooed over your heart in demon blood?” Willow asked incredulously.

“Well, yeah.”

The landscape was littered with destruction; broken slabs of bloodstone and black marble lay strewn about the path, whilst hundreds of demons tried to collect the remains of what had once been the great palace of Chaos, home of Lucifer.

Kel picked her way through the debris, trying not to disturb anything, until she spotted her brother sulking a few metres off.

“I was wondering when you’d show up.” He said. Kel grinned.

“WHAT?!”

“He says their lair was destroyed, and they moved on without him. He doesn’t know where the new one is, and none of his brethren will come to find him until they have established a nest.”

“And how long will that take?” Warren was livid.

“A year at least.”

Jonathan was translating for the demon they had captured with some difficulty, but what he was saying greatly lengthened his life expectancy with Warren, so he was all for it.

“Maybe we could lay low for a while. The Slayer’ll never see us coming.”

“No. I want those orbs NOW!”

Buffy cleared her throat.

“Okay guys, the last few weeks have been really confusing. I think we should sit down and figure some stuff out.”

“I agree.” Giles had been silent up until now.

They sat around a table. There was silence. Giles cleared his throat. Everyone looked at him.

“I’ll start, shall I? Very well. Xander.”

He flinched.

“I know you’ve been avoiding me since…I’m sorry if I frightened you.”

“Giles, you threw me against the wall and stuck a sword in my face. I was terrified!”

“Yes, and I am truly sorry. However, any insult to my family in my hearing must be punished.”

Tara cocked her head to one side.

“Is this the thing with the sacred covenant? I think Kel mentioned it.”

“Yes. Just as she was bound to save Tara when she swore it to Willow, each member of my family is bound to defend the other to the death.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“Why not, Tara?”

“Lucifer and Kel hate each other. They fight each other.”

“Yes, well, there is some bad blood between them. You see, Kel did something Luc couldn’t quite forgive her for.”

Buffy frowned.

“What could she do to break a sacred covenant thingy?”

Giles looked her in the eye.

“She killed him,” he said.

Silence. Then,

“Huh? He didn’t look dead to me.”

Giles sighed.

“Let me explain about my family. When I married my wife, I took an oath before the God and Goddess to protect my family and to love them.”

“Wow.” Willow knew the implications of that kind of promise, and the consequences of breaking it.

“But you guys don’t seem very big with the togetherness.”

“True. But you’re getting ahead of me. As first born child, Kel was born with her wings. She was born an angel. However, my other two children were born human, because I am human. They only way they could reach their true nature was to die. As such, Kel was working for the Authority while Luc was still toddling. They all had places in the hierarchy of angels, but the children, all except Kel could live a mortal life before being called to service. My wife, Kesh, was a goddess born of gods, but she gave up immortality so she could marry me.”

“Wow. That’s so romantic,” said Dawn, dewy-eyed.

“It was. We lived in a little village in a secluded part of England. I worked as a researcher for the Council, and Kesh was mayor. When Luc was 16, he was found dead on the altar of the church with Kel’s knife in his chest. We buried his body, and the next day he came home. As an angel.”

Giles eyes began to water as he remembered his little boy’s body, cold and dead, hollow eyes staring.

“After that, Luc and Kel fought. He knew she hadn’t wanted to do it, and she knew he wanted to forgive her.”

“Why didn’t he?” Tara wondered.

“She wouldn’t let him. She couldn’t be punished in the normal way by the Authority, because they had told her to do it.”

“They told her to murder her own brother?”

Anya cut in. “Kel has been told to do things that would make the Watchers sweat, and they’ve been murdering teenage girls for centuries. And she does them all, because they have to be done.”

Giles nodded. “Quite true. As I was saying, she couldn’t be punished, so she punished herself. She cut herself off from her family, tried to make us hate her. She went to live elsewhere in the village, where she could be seen by all. She wanted to live with the guilt, to punish herself.”

“She always was so damn noble,” Anya said fondly.

“But then, a few years later, my wife and other daughter were murdered. Kel vanished. She couldn’t live in the place where so many people she loved died. That was the last time I saw her until a few weeks ago, when she turned up on my doorstep with those tapes.”

“Oh.”

There was a long silence.

“Why did you never tell us?”

Giles sighed.

“I couldn’t. Apart from the fact that I could not let the Council find out, as they would remove me from Sunnydale and give Buffy a more ‘suitable’ Watcher, not to mention try to kill us, I didn’t think you’d be alive long enough for it to matter even if I was allowed to. If Kel hadn’t come and told you on orders, me telling you would constitute a violation of my oath.”

“Oh.”

Xander glanced at Anya. Dawn stared at her.

“Fine. I met Kel roughly 593 years ago. Actually, I was there because she’d just appeared, and there was so much pain just radiating out of her. I was a vengeance demon, and she was ready for some serious revenge. She just stood there, not really seeing me. Before I even had a chance to speak she said ‘Go away Anyanka, my vengeance is my own, and it will come. But not now.’ Then she just walked away. A few weeks after that we met up again, and got talking. The next thing I know, I’m in love and we’re living together. It was the funniest thing D’Hoffryn had ever heard apparently. A demon and an angel. You’d think there’d be rules against that sort of thing upstairs, but apparently as long as the emotion is pure, angels can love whoever they want. Demon, human, spirit, it doesn’t matter. Then she got thrown out of Heaven, and I guess they told her that meant ending it as well, because she yelled and yelled and in the end I just walked out.”

“Oh.”

Tara stared at the spot where the portal had been, tears forming in her eyes. Once more, silence reigned.

“Hello Luc.”

“Hello Kel.”

“Sorry about this,” she indicated the rubble.

“It’s okay. As long as you help rebuild it.”

Kel turned her attention to the two small bundles on the ground

“Thanks for keeping them safe.”

“No problem.”

They began to walk to what remained of Luc’s chamber.

“So, should I redesign it, or just rebuild it?”

“Well, seeing as you completely wrecked the original design, I want a stronger one.”

“Okay. One Chaos palace coming up.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“No need to be snippy. I only wrecked the lower grounds, after all.”

She grinned. “Forgive me?”

“Always.”

Kel gave Luc a friendly slap on the back and together they began planning the next stage.

Huh?

was pretty much the only reaction I could think of really :)

So Kel claims some higher beings ordered her to kill her brother who then returned as a rather evil demon ? Assuming they DID order her it still makes little sense, they needed an evil demon around ?? Besides, being ordered to do something doesn't make that something a 'good thing' by default.

Nah, both Kel and Luci are of my christmas-list for sure. The mayor difference being that Kel at least help somewhat, as opposed to Luci who definitly needs killing...

The name-tattoo was a neat touch, but I feel like I missed the rest of the reunion. Can't imagine Willow would be all that interested in the how and why once Tara is back :) And Warren is *still* around ? hmmmm.... now that can't be good.

The ending was weird, seems like Kel and Luci enjoy this stuff ? In that case, have both of them ritually burned or something. Playing with people for fun, tsk tsk... evil children.

Someday I'll understand this story, I swear I will :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Willow watched as Tara’s nose crinkled, then grinned. The day had gone so quickly, with Anya closing the shop and them all ordering pizza and Tara’s tales of all the mischief she and Kel had caused in the hierarchy of the lower dimensions. When she had described Lucifer’s pout as his fortress was destroyed, well, it was priceless. They had talked well into the early hours of the morning, with many hugs and tears and laughs as they reaffirmed their friendship. One thing stood out in Willow’s memory, though, a comment someone had made about Kel had provoked a response from Tara.

“Oh, I wouldn’t worry,” She had said “She does this from time to time. She’ll be back in a week or two. Probably tying up some loose ends.”

But her expression was troubled, just for a moment. Willow doubted anyone else had caught it, except her. However, now she was content just to watch her love sleep, watch those gentle features tweak as she wandered the realms of Morpheus.

Towards dawn, Willow drifted off herself, but was awoken only 20 minutes later by a soft whimper from the body curled up against her. Tara whimpered again and whispered,

“Lex…….el, don’t….save…ex.”

She turned over, instinctively seeking the warmth of Willow’s body, and began to weep softly.

“Tara? Wake up, baby.”

She shifted, which made Tara cringe.

“No…don’t take….Willow…my girl……our…love her.”

“Tara?”

She shook her lover awake. By this time Tara had tears streaming down her face.

“Tara, baby, what’s wrong?” Willow was not completely surprised by the fact that Tara was having nightmares, but she expected a more volatile reaction, rather than this soft lamentation.

“Oh, God, Willow….I left them behind. I’m sorry.” Tara clung to Willow, sobbing.

“Hey,” said Willow, smoothing her hair. “It’s okay, it was a nightmare, you were dreaming.”

“No...I left them.” It was all she said. Willow held her for a few minutes until her breathing evened out and she slept once more.

Kel stepped back and surveyed her work. It had taken decades of labour, although she knew the Scooby gang were probably just falling asleep on the day she left, but the new and improved palace of Chaos was complete.

Luc came over to his sister.

“So, what do you think?” She said

“It’ll do.” He replied

“Time to go check on the future?”

“Want me to come?”

“Yeah. Let’s go see if we made a difference.”

Luc grinned at his sister, took her hand and they both simply disappeared.

A few hours later, they returned to exactly the same spot. Kel panted for a second, an odd gesture for someone who didn’t need to breathe, and turned to her brother.

“Well, we made a difference all right.”

She glared at him.

“We have to warn them.”

“Well, since I’m the one that always screws everything up, you have to deliver the packages anyway, and they don’t trust me after taking Tara…”

“Yeah, okay, you big baby, I’ll go.”

They embraced once, and Kel left to prepare.

A week had passed since Tara had returned, and things were finally settling into a rhythm, although Tara’s nightmares returned every night.

Tara was helping Anya and Willow in the Magic Box, Giles and Buffy were training, Dawn was doing homework and Xander was reading comics. All in all, a normal Scooby afternoon.

Tara plunked down the box she was carrying and stretched. The door chimed.

“We’re closed!” The Scoobs yelled in unison.

“To customers yes, but to me?”

“Kel?!”

“Hey Kel.” Tara carried on lifting boxes, but her eyes were on the former angel constantly, hoping for news.

“Don’t get too excited guys, I said I’d be back in a week and here I am.”

“Where did you go?” Tara asked.

“I went back. I had some stuff to do.”

The pack she wore on her back wriggled. Tara’s eyes lit up.

“Which reminds me, I have a surprise for everyone.”

Willow stood close to Tara, as always, so she could feel her lover’s skin practically humming with excitement.

“You didn’t?” Tara asked, voice full of hope.

“I did indeed!” Kel smiled, eyes sparkling. She knew Tara had been having the nightmares, so her first priority was to returning the squirming bundles to her.

“Have you told them?” She asked, suddenly serious.

“No,” Tara replied, looking bashful.

“I didn’t know how.”

The smaller of the two bundles wriggling in Kel’s arms squalled.

“Tara, what….?”

Tara sighed. She knew everyone would find out sooner or later, but she had wanted to tell Willow first. That plan was out, so she took the direct route.

Taking the squalling bundle from Kel, she pushed back the cloth covering it to reveal a new-born, pouting baby, with light red hair, fading to blond at the temples, and dark blue eyes. Beside her, Kel revealed the second bundle to be a slightly larger child, with hair so fair it didn’t seem to be there, except at it’s very tips where it was reddish and wide, green eyes that watched its surroundings intently.

“Tara….what?” Willow said again.

“This is Alex and Willow.”

“Who? What….huh?”

“Actually,” Kel said, indicating the child in her arms, “This little one is called Alexander Rupert Rosenberg-Maclay and Willow Elizabeth Anya Dawn Rosenberg-Maclay is the grumpy one over there.”

“Whoa….what?”

Tara looked at Willow.

“They’re our children.”

Willow’s jaw dropped. So did everyone else’s. Except Anya’s.

“Okay, I’ll accept that they’re Tara’s children, but Willow’s? I know you’re good with miracles, Kel, but Willow and Tara are two females, who were in different dimensions, one of whom has not actively cast a pregnancy spell, and even if you could have children through all that, HOW can two WOMEN have a SON without a Y-chromosome in there?”

“Um…yeah, it’s kind of a funny story. It’s all to do with that little locket Tara’s wearing.” Kel blushed.

“Um….” Willow said, staring at the locket.

“Um….” Said Xander, staring at the children.

“Um….” Giles said, staring at his daughter.

Buffy just gaped at everyone.

“Well you see, the locket contains some of Willow’s hair. I took it from her before I left, if you remember? Well, when Willow and Tara experienced the Link, the spell on the locket took that to mean they were…um…recreating. It was supposed to allow the hair to age so you could have children when you returned, I didn’t expect you two to Link down there. See, we were down there a long time. Not many geneticists know this, but the Y-chromosome is in fact a corruption of the female X-chromosome. After so long, the genetic material in the hair began to degrade. Hence, Y-chromosome. Hence, a son.”

Everyone capable of doing so raised an eyebrow. Buffy and Dawn raised both. Kel ignored them.

“Because you are both from this dimension, they grew at the same rate as they would have here. I sped the pregnancy up though, because I was bored of fighting for four of us but I wasn’t gonna let a pregnant woman battle demons. When you Linked, it gave the spell all it’s components; genetics and spiritual matter from both of you to create life. The oldest child, Willow, was female, but Alex was a boy. I’m a firm believer in a woman’s right to choose, and now you can.”

“Um….” This time it was said in unison.

Two hours later, things were much the same, with two main differences. Kel was pacing impatiently, and Willow had regained coherent speech and was talking with Tara at the table.

Kel had had enough.

“Look, no amount of talking is going to change this. Willow and Tara have two beautiful children, you all get to play aunty or uncle or grandad, and I have one less objective to worry about. Let’s move on, shall we? I need to tell you something.”

“What objective?”

“Huh?” Kel obviously wasn’t pleased with Xander’s interruption.

“You said ‘I have one less objective to worry about’. What does that mean?”

“Oh, well, when I was sent here to change things, I was given a list of targets.”

“What were they?”

“You want the list?”

Why did I have to get into this? Kel thought miserably. We don’t have time!

“Yes, we want the list.”

“Okay.” She began to rattle off the list. “One, stop Tara being killed. Two, make sure Willow is ready to face her addiction. Three, restart warrior bloodlines, i.e. the kiddies. Four, eliminate any threat to said bloodlines. Five, train you all to fight properly. Six, get the entire group back together. Seven, get you through the apocalypse alive if possible. Eight, eliminate any threat to the bloodlines. Nine, close the hellmouth. Ten-“

“We get the idea!”

“Good. Too bad it isn’t working.”

“What?”

Kel sighed. Memories flashed on her mind’s eye, the blood, the fire, the death.

“I went to check on the future. I needed to know if our actions had made a difference.”

“Did they?”

Kel let a hollow laugh escape her as she struggled to stay afloat of the images in her mind.

“Oh, they’re different all right.”

“It’s that bad?” Anya asked.

“No,” Kel said grimly. “It’s worse.”

“How bad?”

“Let me show you.”

Kel walked to the same place that the portal returning them home had appeared, and simply said “Reveal.”

The air twisted and wrenched itself back like a curtain, shimmering in the light, to reveal a horrifying scene. Trees, twisted, burned and disfigured, littered the landscape, which was totally barren except for the occasional ruin of a shack or a mangled skeleton.

“What is this place?” Dawn asked, voice full of awe.

“Sunnydale, 16 years from now.”

“What?”

Across the terrible desert a shadow moved, speeding towards them like a tornado, and as it got closer, it became clear that the shadow was a group of people running from what looked like a huge black cloud that was gaining ground on them very quickly.

Kel’s voice was sad.

“I came here to help, and this is the result.”

The runners came near to the portal, and Kel called out in a strange language. The runners changed course immediately, diving through the portal, which closed instantly.

The Scooby gang came face to face with…the Scooby gang, Buffy at it’s head.

“Welcome to the future.” Kel said to the younger group.

“Kel?” The other Buffy asked.

“Where did you go?”

“Here,” she replied.

“We could have used your help out there. Where are we?”

“You’re in Sunnydale, 16 years ago.”

Willow stepped forward. “You’re-“

Suddenly she had six crossbows aimed at her.

“…safe.”

Time seemed to slow for Tara as she watched each member of the other gang fire and reload almost instantly. She threw up a hand and the bolts stopped in midair, then dropped to the ground. A flick of the wrist disarmed the newcomers, and a quick glance incinerated their weapons. All this occurred in a space of two seconds. The other gang rushed at her.

Several minutes later Kel had gotten everyone relatively calm. On one side of the Magic Box stood Buffy, Dawn, Giles, Anya, Xander, Willow and Tara who were both holding an infant.

On the other side, looking much older and wearier, stood Buffy, Dawn, Xander, Spike, one unidentified boy with fair hair going red at the tips, and…Faith.

Both sides were completely on edge. Kel was in the middle, waiting.

“Okay,” the younger Buffy said, “Who are you?”

The older Buffy conferred with Kel in the same strange language she had used earlier.

“Hey!” Willow squealed. “Don’t call Buffy that!”

Everyone stared at her.

“What? Didn’t you hear what she just called her?”

“No, Will, all I heard was some weird language. What did she say?”

Tara answered for her.

“She called you an immature, whining twit. Personally, I think she’s spent to much time with Kel.”

“Wait,” Xander said. “You understand what they’re saying?”

“Of course. I do speak English, you know.”

“Actually,” the older Buffy said, “I was using the old tongue, the language of the angels. Not that you even remotely resemble an angel.”

Kel sighed. “Buffy, this is not the Willow and Tara you know. These are the women that have just conceived two children from pure love. They are the friends you knew and loved. The Buffy over there still hates Faith. They aren’t the same people you know.”

There was a heavy pause.

The older Xander was first to speak, his voice strained.

“Anya?”

“What?”

Xander watched the older, more muscular version of himself laugh coldly, a laugh that had seen too many tears, and walk over.

He touched Anya’s cheek briefly, then turned away, tears tracking down his face.

“It’s really her.”

Faith touched his arm gently.

“Hey, it’s okay.”

They shared a moment of tenuous silence, Xander’s shoulders shaking.

Spike growled, game face on.

“Fight?” He asked the young boy.

“No, Spike. We don’t fight today.”

His voice was oddly familiar to the younger Scoobs.

“Who are you?” Willow asked.

His burning green eyes met hers, equally emerald.

“I’m your son.”

Silence.

“So, is this all of you?” Giles asked, then winced at the implications of his own words.

“No,” Faith answered, coming up behind the older Buffy.

“There are more.”

Kel wasn’t in the mood for word games.

“Tell them the current population of Earth.”

All of the older Scoobs winced.

“What is it?” Anya asked. The older Xander stared at her.

“Four million, twelve thousand, two hundred and six and counting.”

A moment of stunned silence passed.

“What happened? How could almost six billion people die in 16 years?”

Spike giggled quietly, but the boy – Alex – put his hand on Spike’s back and he was silent.

“They were murdered.” Faith answered.

“How? By who?” Willow asked, horrified.

Kel interrupted.

“That isn’t important, right now we need find a way to change it.”

“Who killed those people, Faith?” Tara asked, and there was a steel in her voice none of the younger Scoobs had ever heard. The older ones, however, were very familiar with it and it set them on edge.

“You did. You and Willow.”

“What?”

“You heard me. Why do think we tried to kill you?”

Kel sighed. “It was my fault.”

“Shut up. We’ve had this conversation. You couldn’t have known.”

Faith and Kel glared at one another for a few seconds, then Kel turned away.

“What happened?” Giles asked.

Kel sighed again.

“When we came back, I left again. Then, Luc and I went to check on you all. When you saw he had returned…you…turned against us. Told us to leave. So I did. I went back to England, and because I wasn’t here, Tara died.”

Willow inhaled sharply, and clutched the child she held to her a little tighter, watching his older counterpart move.

That’s my son, she thought.

Kel was speaking again.

“Willow had seen what she could do, so she decided to…improvise, I guess. She summoned Spike and…made him…turn her. Then they both went from town to town, destroying everything, killing for the sake of killing. Getting more powerful every day. After a while there was only Sunnydale left. I made a sanctuary, a cavern under the ground, bang over the Hellmouth, where you couldn’t enter. What was left of the Scooby gang rounded up as many people as they could from Sunnydale, and I summoned the rest. Now all we do is fight and die. Those of us that can, that is.”

“Um…”

Anya stood.

“What did you mean ‘what was left’ of us?”

Faith stepped forward.

“When you saw what was happening, Kel gathered us together and linked us. At the start there was all of you, plus Alex and Willow junior, and Cordelia, Wesley, Angel, and the other L.A. people, Oz and me. It came to 16 in total. We taught others how to defend themselves, but we were the raiding party. The ones who fought. Now there’s 11 of the original group. Giles was dead within two years. Willow junior a year after that. Oz, six years ago, Lorne, four. Anya,”

The older Xander winced.

“Six months ago. Of course, that isn’t counted Michael, Lucifer and the dozens of other friends. All dead.”

Willow had gone white.

The older Buffy spoke.

“But there’s been life as well. Alex did okay,”

She indicated the young man beside her.

“And we’ve got the kids. Michael, Kelly, Luke, and Thomas.”

“Who?”

Faith spoke again.

“Michael and Kelly are my twins, named after Kel, and Michael, who was their brother and died at birth. Luke and Thomas are Xander and Anya’s boys. Our legacy.”

“You have children?” Xander asked Faith.

“So do you,” she replied.

Silence.

“What was chasing you?” Anya asked.

“Willow. Or one of her concoctions.”

“Oh.”

Buffy turned to her alternate.

“You don’t hate her?” She meant Faith of course.

“No. She’s saved my life more times than I can count. She earned my trust and respect. Besides, there’s so much hate and death around us every day, we need all the love we can get. She’s become my rock.”

Faith grinned, and regarded the younger group of people before her. Her smile faded.

“I envy you. I really do.”

Her eyes went wide, she gasped and dropped to the floor, wheezing.

“Faith?”

“She’s broken through…she’s in the sanctuary.”

“Who?”

“Willow. She’s gonna kill them. She has Michael.”

The brunette Slayer looked up at Kel, eyes brimming with tears, her pain evident.

“Help him.”

Kel’s eyes were full of sorrow.

“I can’t.”

“You can’t just let him die!” The older Buffy yelled, eyes flashing.

“I don’t have a choice.”

The entire congregation was silent except for Faith’s crying.

“He’s gone…they’re all gone.”

The older Buffy turned away from Kel, and scooped the sobbing woman into her arms, rocking her gently.

“Hey…shhhh…I’m here.”

“My little boys…all of them…our boys…they’re gone.”

Faith suddenly went silent, untangled herself from the other Slayer, and stood up. Facing Kel, her eyes were suddenly full of the rage and pain that both Buffy’s had seen before.

“You could have helped them. You should have stopped her.”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“I should kill you.”

Kel just held her gaze. Faith’s hands curled into fists. The silence became a knife point, and their entire future rested on which way the knife would tip.

Well, if you insist....

However, I'm working on a another non W/T novel (I know, it's disgraceful...but it is a lesbian story) and will probably be working on that for...oh, at least half an hour. So I'm afraid you'll have to wait. Sorry.

Willow: We can come by between classes. Usually I use that time to copy over my class notes with a system of different colored pens. But it's been pointed out to me that that's, you know... insane.
