Hey Justin~~ Wow--as I wish, so did I receive! Gotta love that...

Grounds-Keeper Buffy...yeah, I like the sound of that...

You know, any paragraph that ends w/ this line: "The people he'd spoken to had been rather vague on this subject" is bound to suggest some future elaborations on the subject.

You have interesting stuff going on w/ all the Scoobies, and Faith--and now there's John and his dirt fetish. He sounds like the guy from "Real Me," who cornered Dawn outside the Magic Shop--is that right? What's up w/ him? Hmm...

It seems like there's a bit of a theme here (and forgive me if I'm seeing what I want to see): the issue of how we use our power. Faith and now Tara seem to be worrying about what they might do if their strength in their respective areas goes awry. Again, though, I'm prone to seeing what I want to, so if that's way off base, just nod and smile...

Take care, and thanks again for crafting this tale.

I like the story! The characters are very well painted, and the intrigue is very well...intriguing!

I wonder if Claudia is trustworthy? Sure she's had a very traumatic experience growing up...maybe she's driven on revenge?

And Tara having trouble with her powers now that's a new plot!

More please!

glad you liked it.

definitely, much with the weirdness

Well Willow's kind of used to her spells sometimes going a little awry, so that's why she's not too worried. But you're right there is much cause for concern.

yes you will be hearing more on this subject, though not for a while.

the great thing about kittens is they often see things in a story that the writer missed. I hadn't seen it before but you're right there is a theme running through this story about power - whos got it, who wants it and how they use it. Thanks

Arwen276: I'm glad that you're liking the story. Is Claudia trustworthy? Now that would be telling. : -->>:

Well it's not that new. Lisa Countryman has written some brilliant stories about this subject (Tears of the goddess, Unexpected Consequences and Milestones)

Yeah put me in the "suspicious of the watcher lady" category. I am not sure she has Tara's best interest in mind. I am surprised that tara would trust a watcher so easily and that Willow wouldn't be worried. Thanks for the update justin!

Interesting story justin. I loved the little Tommyknockers/Stephen King reference you put in there.

I am very worried about Tara's new power. I too wish she had taken up Willow's offer to go with her, though it is good that Willow has found a way to make some money. Thanks for the story. :)

Well, that update certainly screams for more! Like right now! Okay, in a peaceful place now...patient and calm, patient and calm. I'm sure everything will turn out all right, in about fifty more updates.

Well Tara hasn't had as much experience with Watchers as everyone else. Also Tara does has some reasons for trusting Claudia, despite what her better judgement might tell her, which will be explored later.

Thanks for reading

I've wanted to include Tommyknockers in a story for some time now, if only so I could use that poem :)

Dreams/Flashbacks are in italics

Chapter 5 – In which our heroines meet up with Samuel and Caitlin has a problem.

Whistler glanced at his watch and sighed, Jennifer was late again. Well, she had never been very punctual. He opened a book up and started skimming through it. Almost immediately he found a demon whose name had been misspelled. Pulling out a pen he crossed out the misspelled word and wrote in the correct version. A moment later the old text disappeared and his version replaced it. Whistler closed the book as Jennifer approached and sat down opposite him.

"Hello again. So where were we?"

"You were just explaining how, if my Grandmother hadn't taken a short cut, then my aunt would still be alive."

"Well it's rather more complex than that, but that is the gist of it."

"So, did you have anything to do with all this?"

"Well I was around but it was as more of an observer than a participant."

***

Tara gazed round her in shock, not quite able to believe what she was seeing. She had just entered a large circular room that was lined with bookcases. The central circle was lower than the rest and was filled with tables and bookcases. Long passages led off from various points of the outer ring. Wandering down into the centre of the room, Tara approached a large table where a group of teenagers were talking.

One girl, who looked like Hermione Granger was saying, "Well I don't think that the threefold law should be taken too literally, it just means that..."

Tara missed the rest as she moved away from them. She was just starting down one of the passages when someone called out, "Tara." Turning she saw a young man, wearing casual clothes approaching, "It is Tara, right?"

Tara nodded, "Are you Samuel?"

"Indeed I am. So you found the place okay?"

Tara held up the necklace and said, "The charm worked like, um, a charm."

"Well, good, good." Samuel approached and shook Tara's hand. "So what has Claudia told you about me?"

"Oh, just that you teach people about using magic."

"Well that is certainly true. Though I like to think I do more than just that. I help people to control the powers that they are blessed with. As well as show them how to use them how to use those powers in a responsible way in order to benefit themselves and everyone else."

Tara was still looking about, trying to get an idea of how big it was, "Do you own this place?"

"What, the library? No I just use it for my classes." He smiled at Tara , "It just about serves my purposes. Well if you'll come with me we can get started."

***

When Tara got home she found Willow waiting for her. "Hey, you didn't have to wait up for me."

"I know." Willow responded, "But I wanted to." Willow motioned for Tara to sit down next to her, then asked, "So how did it go?"

"A lot, this Samuel really knows a lot. I think he's really going to teach me a lot. About how to control these new powers and about magic in general."

"Now I'm starting to get jealous. What with you getting all this witchy training, you're probably going to shoot right past me."

Tara moved over so that she could put her arm round Willow. "I'm going again next week. I was going to ask if you wanted to come along."

Willow brightened at this, "Really, I wouldn't be intruding or anything?"

"Of course not. I wouldn't want to go without you."

"Then it's settled, next time you go I'll go with you. Right now it's your turn."

"What?"

"How did your first lesson go?"

"Oh it went well. Megan is a lot like Cordelia..." Seeing Tara frown slightly Willow quickly added, "Who you've never met. What I mean is she just seems to talk about clothes, cheerleading and how popular she is. But we got along pretty well despite that."

"Did you meet her parents?"

"I met her mom. She kinda reminded me of my mom." Glancing at the clock Willow said, "We ought to get up to bed." Standing up and taking Tara's hand Willow led her upstairs.

***

When Claudia arrived at the Magic Box Willow and Tara were reading some of the books that Samuel had given her. Giles and Anya were counting the money while Faith paced impatiently. Each time that she got close to the counter, she seemed to be about to say something. However after hesitating a short while she turned and walked away. Claudia wasn't sure that she wanted to interrupt, as she wanted to see what it was that Faith wanted to say. However after watching Faith do this a couple of times she decided to step in. "I have some bad news." Claudia held up the newspaper she had been holding.

"I thought that things were too quiet at the moment." Faith said.

Claudia gave the paper to Giles and said, "Read this."

Giles quickly read the report about a man being kidnapped, "I don’t really see how this pertains to us. We don't generally deal with kidnappings."

"You saw the part about him having been recently released from a mental institute."

"I still don't see what it has to do with us."

Claudia sighed, "Some people believe that insanity is caused by someone having been touched by God. In this case that is literally true, though they were touched by a Goddess."

"Glory." Giles said, realising what Claudia was getting at.

"Who?" Faith asked.

"Glory was a hell goddess who needed to drain the mental energy from other people in order to remain sane. We were able to stop her but not before she set in motion the chain of events that led to Buffy's death." Giles frowned as he remembered the events of that fateful day.

"There have been two other cases of people who had been attacked by Glory disappearing."

"So someone is collecting Glory's victims. I wonder..." Giles stopped as he noticed that Claudia wasn't looking at him. Turning to see what she was looking at he said, "Oh dear."

A short distance away Tara looked up from the book she had been reading, a slight frown on her face, "Is something wrong?"

***

After having done some research Willow and Tara decided to go to the Expresso pump, asking Claudia if she wanted to come with them. Sitting down opposite them Claudia stared unhappily at the Mocha that she had ordered.

"Is something wrong?" Tara asked.

Claudia sighed, "Denis Leary was right. You can not buy coffee flavoured coffee in this country." She took a sip of her drink then, grimacing, said, "This place should be shut down for crimes against good taste."

"We kinda like it here." Willow said, a little defensively.

"Don't worry I won't hold it against you." She studied the two witches for a moment then asked, "So what did you want to talk about?"

"We just wanted to get to know you." Tara said.

"Ah, you wanted to find out if I'm another Gwendolyn Price."

"Are you?" Willow asked.

"No, though I would say that, wouldn't I?"

Willow and Tara shared a look over her saying the same thing that Faith had, "Mr Giles says that you're not popular amongst the higher levels of the watchers council and that it's because you have some unorthodox ideas. He didn't know what they were though." Tara said.

"Ah, well I have this theory that to a certain extent our thoughts shape the universe. Also that demons are the manifestation of our darker thoughts and instincts." Seeing the way they were looking at her and worrying about what they were thinking she quickly went on, "Of course this is just a theory, but since it goes against the standard dogma, I soon got a reputation as a crank."

"And that's why you're not popular?"

"That's the official reason, yes."

***

Claudia swirled her drink about thinking that this was one of the most boring parties that she had ever been to. That wasn't that surprising since the only things that Watchers knew how to talk about were vampires and apocalypses. She was about to leave when she spotted Quentin Travers standing nearby, looking as pompous and smug as always. Finishing her drink Claudia walked over to him. "Travers."

"Hello Claudia."

"You know there's something that I've wanted to say to you for quite some time. You really are a shit. A stuck up, pompous shit."

"Claudia you're drunk. I suggest you go and sleep it off."

"Don't tell me what to do. You're always telling people what to do, acting like you know everything." Claudia started poking him in the chest, "I'll tell you now, you don't know nothing about nothing."

"Claudia I really think that..." He stopped as Claudia grabbed a nearby punch bowl and emptied it over his head. "That is it..." He stopped again as he realised that Claudia had passed out.

***

"Pretty much straight after that I was sent to Coventry."

Willow turned to give Tara a questioning look. Tara just shrugged in response. "That's too bad." Willow said.

"Well it was my own fault. Anyway if I had the chance to do it over, I think I'd do it exactly the same."

***

"Are you sure this is the right place?" Willow asked, looking round her surroundings, "This looks more like the sort of place you'd find a crack house rather than a library."

"That's what I thought when I came here. I guess it's just to help keep it hidden."

"I guess you wouldn't think of looking here."

"Anyway what do you know about crack houses?" Tara asked.

"I've seen about them. On after school specials. Where the naive heroine goes to a place like this to see the dealer, who's always skanky and called something like Rack. Pretty soon she's selling herself to get her next fix, then she gets her friends hurt. It all ends up in tears of course. It was very educational, in a preachy, heavy handed kind of way."

"We're here."

"I don't remember that door being there before."

"It wasn't, it's magic."

"Hello again." Samuel said as they entered the library. "It's good to see you."

"Hello. This is Willow."

"Hi." Willow added raising her hand in a small wave.

"Wonderful.” Samuel said clapping his hands together, “Any friend of Tara's is more than welcome here." Turning to Tara Samuel said, "Tara, I've done some research and I've come up with some meditation techniques that I believe will help you." Turning back to Willow he said, "Willow, feel free to explore the library while I talk to Tara."

Willow wandered down the rows of books wondering where she was going to start. It would take several lifetimes just to browse all the books.

"Hello there." Willow jumped before turning to see an old woman looking at her. Then as she got closer she had second thoughts about this description. While the woman’s hair was white, her features were very young looking. "Can I help you?"

"Oh I'm, just looking round. Do you work here?"

"I guess that you could say that. I'm Emma."

"Willow."

"That's a lovely name." Emma said, as she shook Willow's hand. "If you need anything, then just ask."

"I will, Thanks." Emma turned back to putting the books away and Willow walked off.

As Willow walked away Emma turned back towards her and said, "Yes, I think that she'll do nicely."

***

After Willow had been wandering round the books awhile Tara and Samuel approached her. "Willow, Tara was just telling me about your friend Amy."

"Oh, Amy. We've been trying to turn her back, but nothing seems to work."

"Yes that's what Tara said. Well I think I know a way. So if you could bring Amy when you next visit I'll give it a go."

"Wow. If you can then that would be wonderful."

"I'm just glad to be able to help."

***

Tara sat nervously in the waiting room. Part of her wished that Willow had been able to come with her, though she knew that that wasn't possible since Willow was with one of her students. They were both a little shocked by how many applications for tutoring Willow had had in the short time without even advertising.

"Ms Maclay?" Tara looked up to see a stern looking woman, in a dark suit, standing nearby. "Mr Gilson will see you now."

Tara stood up and went through into the office that she indicated, to find a young, friendly looking man sitting there. He was wearing a light suit with the tie partly undone. Standing he said, "Ah, Ms Maclay, please take a seat." Tara sat down and he said, "Now I understand that you wish to adopt a Dawn Summers and that then your partner, um..." He glanced down at the notes in front of him.

"Willow." Tara supplied.

"Right, Willow wishes to apply for a second parent adoption. Well there shouldn't be too much trouble since there is plenty of precedent for your application. Though it'd be best not to mention your relationship with Willow."

"You mean lie?"

"No, not at all. If someone asks then answer them honestly but unless someone does directly ask then it'd be best to not offer the information."

"Because a single woman would be a better parent than two women."

"I know it's silly but that's the way things are." He read through Tara's file a moment then said, "Ah. It says here that the girl’s..."

"Dawn."

He nodded then went on, "Dawn's father is still alive."

"Is that a problem? We haven't spoken to him in years."

"Well if he was to come back, the courts might over turn the adoption and give him custody. Though have you tried to contact him?"

"Yes. When Joyce, Dawn's mother, was ill we tried to call him but he never returned any of our messages."

"Well then we could show that he's been negligent. Anyway if he's been out of contact for this long he probably won't show up any time soon."

They continued discussing the adoption, with Mr Gilson explaining how to fill out the application forms.

***

When Tara got home she went up to Dawn's room and told her to come downstairs. Sitting Down Tara said, "I filed my application to adopt you. It should take a couple of months for it to be processed."

"Then you and Willow will be my parents? I mean legally."

"Well I will be."

"I'll still need to file a separate application." Willow said as she joined them.

"Oh, right. That still doesn't make any sense."

"I agree..." Willow stopped as there was a knocking at the door. "I'll get it." Willow went to open the door then said, "Caitlin."

Caitlin, the leader of the campus Wicca group, was normally a very bubbly, enthusiastic person, but now she just seemed to be terrified. "Willow, you have to help me. I've been cursed."

Hey Justin!

First of all, I wanna apologize for being an ass and not leaving feedback. I know, bad me. :punish

I've been reading this fic ever since I was on vacation, and I have to say I love the concept, 'cause I thought about it many times. You're taking all that's been given to us in season 5 and remodeling season 6 to actually make sense and to not be the abyss and the degradation of all our beloved characters.

Also, I'm loving the actual fact that they talk about jobs and adopting Dawn. It seems more true-to-life, even though Buffy was a 'horror/sci-fi' (don't kill me for those adjectives... I have the word in my head in French and I just can't find the english word for it :lol ) series with Vampires and other 'demons'.

And with that, I think I've just showed once more that I can give intelligent feedback!:lol

Kudos and I'll be waiting patiently for the next part. :grin

A pair of wonderful updates. You've given me plenty to think about here, what with Tara's spell going wrong, the Tommyknockers, Claudia's past, kidnapped brain-sucked people, and the magic school. Kudos for incorporating all of these ideas and and even more for making everything flow so coherently!

I look forward to more! :bigwave

Hello Kittens-

The library sounds too good to be true and the line-

As Willow walked away Emma turned back towards her and said, "Yes, I think that she'll do nicely."

-makes those vestigial hackles go up. Not saying they're bad, it's just that I wish W/T would be more cautious. That and the gathering of the brain sucked by unknown forces makes Sunnydale a bit worrisome.

And as always the thoughts of the state seeking to "protect" children just make you go bleah. A father who didn't come home when his children lost their mother is of course a wonderful person to raise the last of those children.

Thank you for the work,

I think BtVS was at it's best when it was a blend of supernatural elements (like fighting vampires) and more mundane things (like not getting expelled from school). When it lost that it just got silly.

I agree with you about the bleah factor. See my comment to bluewillowwitch

Though to put all your minds at rest, Mr Summers isn't going to appear at any point, demanding custody of Dawn. He's too happy off living the life of riley with his much younger wife (who's having an affair with the pool boy, but he doesn't know that) to want to come back.

previously

Chapter 6

"Perhaps you'd better come in." Willow said, moving aside. Caitlin nodded and entered, still looking nervous.

Willow lead Caitlin into the living room. Dawn moved out of the way to let her sit down while Tara went out into the kitchen. Coming back with a glass of water she asked, "Why do you think that you've been cursed?"

Caitlin gave Tara a grateful look before taking a sip from the glass. "It started about a month ago. We got a new member to the Wicca group, a guy called Brandon . It was pretty clear that he wasn't interested in the spiritual side of Wicca and was just interested in doing magic. That wouldn't have been so bad, but he was rude and often insulting to the other members." Caitlin took another drink then went on, "Eventually it got to the stage where I had to ask him to leave."

"I guess he didn't take it well." Dawn said.

"No, he didn't, um..." She looked at Dawn uncertainly a moment as she tried to figure out who she was.

"Oh, Caitlin, this is Dawn. Dawn, Caitlin." Willow filled in.

"Oh, it was you who summoned Morrigan." Dawn said, recognising where she had heard the name from. About a year and a half ago, while trying to impress the other members of the Wicca group and, more importantly, Willow and Tara, Caitlin had summoned the Goddess Morrigan. Unfortunately Morrigan had started killing everyone that she saw as being Caitlin’s enemies, who just happened to be the other members of the Wicca group. With Willow and Tara’s help they had been able to banish Morrigan and shortly afterwards Caitlin had been made the head of the Wicca group.

"Um yes." Caitlin said, looking down at the floor and seeming to be rather embarrassed at having that incident brought up.

"So what did he do?" Tara asked, thinking that it was best to avoid that subject.

"It was last week he came up to me and started waving an incense stick in my face. Then he told me that I'd been cursed."

"Caitlin." Tara started, "He doesn't sound like he has the power to curse anyone. He was probably just trying to scare you."

"That's what I thought. Then weird stuff started happening." Caitlin stood up and started pacing. "It seems that everything I touch breaks. I just have to go near something electrical and it stops working."

"Maybe that's just..." Willow started.

"Also I've been struck by lightning twice so far this week."

"But we haven't had any thunder." Tara said, thinking about the clear sunny weather they'd been having.

"I know!" Caitlin said, starting to feel desperate. For a while the only thing that had kept her going was the hope that Willow and Tara would be able to help her. But now it seemed that they didn’t believe her.

Willow and Tara looked at each other a moment then Willow said, "You could be right, we ought to check."

"Dawn, could you go and get the small box up on our dresser."

"You mean the one with the pentagram on it?" Tara nodded and Dawn ran off.

"So you've got something that can help me, get rid of this curse?" Caitlin asked, starting to sound hopeful.

"We need to know what it is before we can tell you that."

"Well thanks for your help. This is just like before." Caitlin thought a moment then said, "Hey maybe we should get the others from the Wicca group. They can help."

"No." Willow said, "I don't think that'll be necessary."

Dawn returned and handed the box to Tara, who opened it and took out a necklace. It was a long golden chain with a large clear crystal at one end. "Here put this on."

Caitlin reached out to take the necklace. As her hand neared it a bolt of electricity came out of the crystal and hit Caitlin's hand.

"Ow!" Caitlin pulled her hand away, a pained expression on her face.

"Are you okay?" Tara asked, dropping the crystal and going over to help Caitlin.

"I think so, It just stung." Cairlin flexed her hand experimentaly. Relieved when it didn’t fall off she said, “Yeah, I’m okay.”

"I've never seen it do that before." Willow quickly went out into the kitchen and came back with some tongs. Using them to gingerly picking the crystal up, she dropped it back into the box.

"You see I'm cursed." Caitlin said.

Tara took the crystal off Willow and put it back in the box. "This isn't like any curse that I've ever seen."

"I think we're going to need help from the others." Turning to Caitlin Willow went on, "Maybe you should stay here? Just until we can figure this out."

Caitlin nodded, still looking worried.

***

"I think, they went in here." Faith said as she stopped to wait for Claudia. After a few seconds Claudia caught up, looking out of breath.

"I think that I am going to die." She gasped, leaning against the wall .

"You really need to work out a bit more."

Claudia glared at her before saying, "Well go on, those vampires aren't going to stake themselves."

Faith nodded then went into the building, her senses ready for any sign of movement. Her eyes were constantly moving checking the shadows as she slowly made her way to the center of the room. It was then she saw it. A large table with a body laid out on it. The body’s arms and legs had bee spread to form an x. As Faith got closer she saw that his upper body was bare, and there was an intricate pattern carved into his chest. His skin was pale, as if all his blood had been drained.

"Did you find them?" Claudia asked as she came in.

"No, but I found this." Faith indicated the table.

As Claudia got closer she raised her hand to her mouth, "Oh my."

"I don't suppose that the vampires did this."

"No, I'd say that he's been here for quite some time." Claudia began inspecting the body as she said this.

"So who did this and why do they want his blood?"

"I believe the key to answering that is in understanding this sigil." As she said this Claudia pulled out a camera and started taking pictures.

***

Caitlin got up at about midnight to get some water. As she passed the landing window she glanced out, and was surprised to see a figure outside the house. She couldn’t see much about them but she got the impression that they were watching the house. After a moments panic she guessed that they were just waiting for a friend and went to get her water.

As Caitlin returned to her room she looked out the window again. The figure was still there and they were still staring at the house. Now starting to really panic Caitlin dropped the glass and ran to the door of Willow and Tara's room.

After knocking for a couple of minutes it was opened by a very sleepy and disgruntled Willow. "Caitlin, what's wrong?"

"There's some one lurking outside the house." She led Willow and Tara to the window and said, "See?"

Willow looked out then said, "Caitlin, there's no one there."

Caitlin quickly moved to look and sure enough the figure had gone. "But there was someone there, I swear."

"Are you sure you weren't dreaming?" Tara crossed her arms across her chest and frowned at Caitlin.

"No I was awake." Caitlin bent to pick the glass up and pointing at it went on, "See. If I had been dreaming then how did the glass get out here."

"I don’t know.” Tara went on, starting to sound annoyed. “Maybe it was a trick of the light, or just a bush or something. Did you even think about that?"

"Well whatever it was they're gone now." Willow added. Caitlin just nodded.

“Well thanks for waking us up.” Tara made an exasperated sound then started for the door muttering, "Well this was a total waste of time." At the door she turned back and said, “If you see anything else, then please, tell us in the morning.”

***

Willow followed Tara into their bedroom and as they got into bed she asked, "Tara, is something wrong?"

"No, why?"

"It's just you were a little short with Caitlin."

"I was?" Tara looked worried at this. Willow just nodded. Tara started to get back out of bed saying, "Maybe I should go and apologise to her."

Willow put her arm round Tara to stop her. "No it's okay, I mean no one likes being woken up in the middle of the night. I was just wondering if there was anything in particular that was bothering you."

"No there's nothing wrong. I mean we've been busy lately but..." Tara faltered, not sure what was wrong.

"I understand." Willow said as she moved closer to Tara, "You're just a bit tired is all." Kissing her, Willow added, "Good night again."

***

The next morning Willow and Tara went to the Magic Box. They were surprised to see that everyone else was already there. "Looks like we're late." Willow said.

"No, actually we were early." Giles said, "Claudia and Faith made a discovery last night. They found one of the people who had been kidnapped."

"Were they okay?" Tara asked.

"He was dead." Claudia answered, as she walked in from the training room, wearing padding on her forearms. Her hair was damp with sweat and she seemed to be a bit out of breath. "He'd been ritually sacrificed from the looks of it." She began taking the padding off while muttering, “Exactly who came up with the brilliant idea that the best way to train a slayer is to strap on some padding and let her hit you repeatedly.”

"We're just trying to work out why." Giles added.

"Well I know that this is all very important, but we've got another problem." Willow said, "A friend from college, Caitlin, has been cursed by another student. From what we can tell it’s a pretty nasty one too."

"Do you know who did it?"

"Yes."

"Well then maybe you should take Faith and go and find out how to remove the curse." Claudia suggested.

They started to the training room, but Tara stopped Willow in the door way, whispering, "I'm worried about Caitlin. Maybe we should take her to the library, she should be safe there."

"Oh yeah, that's a good idea. I mean it’s all full with the mysticaly type energy so it should be able to protect Caitlin from the curse and I think she definitely does need protection so... What was I saying?”

“I’ll get Caitlin and take her to the library. Unless you want me to come with you?”

“No, we’ll be fine.” Then as a thought occurred to her, Willow said, “And don't forget to take Amy."

***

"So this is where he lives." Faith didn't seem to be very impressed with the house that they'd come to. It was a small run down building, at the end of a long line of small run down buildings.

"This is the address that Caitlin gave us." Willow said, taking out the note that Caitlin had given her and double checking it.

Faith knocked on the door and after a few seconds a disheveled figure, dressed all in black answered. "Hello." He said.

"We're looking for Brandon, is he in?" Faith asked.

"I'm Brandon." The man answered, looking suspiciously at them. He was sure that they were going to try to sell him something. If it weren’t for the fact that they were both cute he would have slammed the door in their faces by now.

"Why am I not surprised," Willow muttered.

"Can I help you with something?" He put his hand to the door and seemed to be about to close it.

"You can tell us how to take the curse off of Caitlin."

"But I haven't... I... That girl has got serious problems, First she throws me out of her losers club for no reason and now she's going round telling lies about me. She needs help." Brandon seemed to be growing more and more agitated as the diatribe went on.

"Listen we know..." Willow stopped as Brandon slammed the door shut in their faces. She turned to Faith, frowning, with her mouth formed in a slight pout, "Well that was just, rude."

"You don't think he was telling the truth do you?"

"No, he was the one who cursed Caitlin."

"Well then why don't you head back to the Magic Box, I'll meet up with you there."

"What are you..." Willow stopped as Faith set off round the back of the building.

***

"Well this looks nice." Caitlin said as she looked round the library.

"I wonder where Samuel is."

They found him sitting in a small alcove, reading. Looking up and seeing Tara he smiled and said, "Ah Tara. It's good to see you." Looking at the cage that she was holding he asked, "Is this Amy?"

"Yes, I hope that you'll be able to help her."

"I'll see what I can do." He turned to look at Caitlin and asked, "And who is this?"

"I'm Caitlin. I've been cursed." Caitlin gazed at Samuel suspiciously. She didn’t know why she didn’t like him, there was just something about him that she didn’t like.

"Ah yes, I thought I noticed something off in your aura."

"We were hoping that she could stay here till we sort it out."

"Yes, that is an excellent idea. I'm sure that you'll be safe..."

Caitlin, who wanted to get away from him as soon as possible, interrupted, "I think that I'll go look round." Without waiting for an answer Caitlin turned and walked off.

"She's just worried about the curse." Tara tried to to explain.

"Of course. Well let's see what we can do about Amy here."

***

Samuel was able to turn Amy back into a human. She was led off by an assistant to be checked over, while Samuel led Tara to his office. Sitting down he asked, "Have you been practicing those meditations that we discussed?"

"I've been trying, but I've been finding it hard to relax." Tara admitted.

"Really?" Samuel stood up and began walking round Tara, studying her intently. "This will most likely be because of the extra power in your system. Your body is having trouble coping with all the extra energy. Have you experienced any other symptoms?"

"I've been feeling very irritable lately."

Samuel sat down again and arching his hands together he said, "Indeed, I believe that this is the same problem. However if you redouble your efforts at meditation then you'll get these symptoms under control." He clapped his hands together saying, "Now why don't we try one of those meditations."

Tara nodded and, closing her eyes, she began trying to relax.

Samuel got up and started walking round Tara. "I want you to picture your Chakras. I want you to imagine them opening up like flowers. Now imagine all the negative energy in your body flowing out of them and away from you."

***

Tara was flying. Looking round she saw that she was being carried by a large winged demon. There were large hooks on it's claws that were digging into her arms. The demon dropped Tara and gave a loud cry. Suddenly a swarm of those demons flew down and started tearing at Tara's flesh.

***

"Imagine positive energy flowing up from the ground and into your body. Imagine it healing you, cleansing you."

***

Tara was standing on a rickety wooden bridge that swayed gently in the wind. Glancing down she saw that she was standing over a stream of lava. The bridge creaked as the supports began to give way. Tara ran for the end of the bridge but, no matter how fast she ran, she didn't seem to be making any progress. With a snap the bridge gave way. Tara screamed as she fell towards the lava.

***

"Feel that energy healing your spirit and your body. Feel all negative emotions being swept away by the love of the goddess."

***

Tara was lying in pitch darkness. Moving about a little she discovered that she was in a small box - a coffin. Tara felt something crawling up her body. She quickly realised that it was an insect. Then there was another, and another, and another. Soon there were hundreds of them crawling up her body. Tara tried not to scream as they reached her face.

***

"And wake up." Samuel said, clapping his hands. As Tara opened her eyes he asked, "How do you feel?"

"Better, more at peace." Tara smiled, it was so relaxing sitting listening to Samuels voice. It was almost as good as when she did a ritual with Willow.

"Good, that is good to hear."

Standing up Tara said, "I always feel so much better after these sessions. Thankyou."

Samuel gave her an encouraging smile, "I'm just glad to be able to help"

***

Faith quietly snuck around the back of the building. Looking for a way in. Unfortunately the only one she could see was a small window on the second floor. Faith realised that she wouldn't be able to get through it, even if she could reach it. Faith was just thinking she might have to break her way in when she tried the back door. To her surprise it swung open. Faith went in and quietly closed the door before creeping up the stairs. Trying the first door she came to Faith found a small bedroom. There was a wooden chest which she went to first. However all she found in there was a pile of clothes. She was about to put them back when it occurred to her there was something wrong with the inside of the box. After examining it a while she found that it had a fake bottom. Removing this Faith found a large hardbound note book.

"Score." Faith whispered.

Hearing someone coming up the stairs Faith quickly replaced the bottom and threw the clothes in before running to the window. As the steps reached the door she threw the window open and jumped out.

Hey, Justin~~ Two updates! Sorry I missed the first one!

OK, I'm having some very disconcerting thoughts re: our "good" Mr. Samuels. It's interesting that Caitlin was the one to pick up a negative vibe from him, since W&T, esp. the latter, are usually so perceptive. Those must be some wonky meditation practices, if Tara's actual meditative experiences are so different from what she remembers when she awakens.

As frustrating as the adoption practices are, it is looking hopeful--at least until Tara goes off the deep end or something. Yoikes...

I'm wondering how and if Brandon is related to all the other nefarious goings-on...Perhaps he's just a poser who serves to bring Caitlin into the mix.

Great job w/ the characters, Justin. I'm really seeing them as I read them. (But perhaps some medication would help...)

Great update!

I don't trust Samuel though - those were some very disturbing 'visions' Tara had and yet she feels better afterwards? :hmm

I'm liking Claudia - her comment about the Slayer training was brilliant. I'm interested to see where the crazy people plot will lead - the sacrifice reminded me of the Vahrall demons in "Doomed".

I'm hooked! Looking forward to learning some answers!

Every time you walk away, I pretend that I'm okay

That was definitely some bad mojo, or bad jojo. Maybe it was even bad mojo jojo

And I really need to stop watching the power puff girls :blush

You're right, they would make a great team, as long as they can work out their issues.

thanks for the kind words, and for the rose :)

You mean that Tara running through Sunnydale throwing lightning bolts and shouting "I'll kill you. Kill you all." won't help her chances of adopting Dawn? :hmm , I guess I'll have to rethink that part ;)

You'll find out more about Brandon in the next part.

One of my main worries is wether I'm putting enough detail in to let people see what's happening, so I'm glad that you are able to see the characters.

Oh and remember to keep taking those pills.

Seems everyone has taken a disliking to Samuel due to his wacky meditation techniques.

As to why Tara felt better, maybe her visions were cathartic. (I'm not saying they were, just that they might be :evil )

Thanks for reading :)

Chapter 7

Giles went through the pictures that Claudia had given him. They were of the man who had been sacrificed and the was trying to identify the mark on the man’s chest. Giles had been rather shocked when rather than than giving him normal photos she had given a set of colour printouts. There just seemed to be something unseemly about a watcher using a digital camera. Giles looked up as Willow entered the Magic Box, "Where's Faith?"

"She told me to meet her here."

"So did you speak to the young man?"

"Yes. He said he had nothing to do with it, but I could tell he was lying." Willow frowned as she remembered how rude Brandon had been. Though, now that she thought about it, she couldn’t have expected anything else from someone who went around cursing people.

"Well then I guess we just have to find out what spell he used."

As he said this the door opened and Faith came in. Willow walked towards Faith, demanding, "Faith, where were you?"

"I was getting this." Faith held up the book she was holding, a triumphant smile playing on her lips, "His spell book."

"You stole it?" Willow asked, in a shocked voice.

"No, I asked nicely and he gave it to me.” Faith responded in a sarcastic tone, “Of course I stole it."

"Well I suggest that we look through it." Giles took the book and began reading through it. "Well these mostly seem to be harmless. Love spells, spells to make money, none of them seem to be affective. Ah!" Giles instinctively removed his glasses at what he’s seen.

"What is it?" Willow asked, walking over to look.

"Take a look." Giles showed her the page, a worried frown on his face.

"Oh dear." Willow murmered as she read the passage that Giles indicated.

"What is it?" Faith asked, starting to feel excluded from the conversation.

"A Solaric summoning spell." Giles explained.

"Summoning? You mean he's summoned a demon?" Faith guessed.

"Not quite. It summons an elemental being that will increase the magical powers of the caster."

"So he started as a magical nobody, cast this spell and now he's a hopped up uber witch." Faith reasoned.

"Quite. It is most likely due to this spell that he was able to curse, Caitlin."

"If he's really this powerful, is he going to stop with just cursing someone he's got a grudge against?" Faith asked.

"No. We need to break his connection with the Solaric entity."

"What about Caitlin?" Willow asked, concerned that they shouldn’t forget about her friend.

"Doing that will reverse the curse on her."

"So how do we do it?" Faith asked.

"That is the tricky part." Giles thought a moment then said, "We need to get them both here."

***

Caitlin looked up as a shadow fell across her. "So was he able to help Amy?"

Tara nodded, "She's talking to Samuel now."

"I bet her parents will be happy."

"Um, Amy's mother disappeared almost five years ago and her father left Sunnydale after she was turned into a rat." Tara hesitated a moment, "Why were you so rude?"

"Sorry? What do you mean?"

"Earlier when we spoke to Samuel, you were very rude to him."

"I don't think..." Caitlin was confused by this acusation. She thought that she had been perfectly polite to Samuel, despite not liking him.

"No, you never do, do you? You just go round, blindly getting into trouble and expecting other people to get you out of it." Tara’s eyes flashed with anger as she shouted at Caitlin.

"I..." Caitlin started nervously, she had never seen Tara show any signs of anger and frightened her.

"Goddess, when are you going to grow up and start taking responsibility for your actions." It was then that Tara realised that she was yelling, and that there were several people staring at her. "I mean..." Tara stopped not sure what to say.

"Hey, is something wrong?" Willow had arrived in time to catch the last part of the conversation and was shocked to see Tara yelling at Caitlin.

"No, I... Nothings wrong." Caitlin answered.

"Okay.” Willow said slowly. She made a note to discuss this with Tara later, “Giles has an idea. We all need to get back to the Magic Box."

***

Faith stood near the entrance of the Magic Box watching as Willow and Tara went about making preparations for the spell, being instructed by Giles. Anya was standing behind the counter having been told, rather pointedly, to stay out of the way by Willow. Finally growing bored of this Faith went over to him and asked, "So is there anything that you need me to do?"

"If you could keep an eye out for this Brandon. Make sure he doesn't interrupt our preparations."

"Right." Faith went back to the entrance and began watching out the window.

"So I just need to stand here in this circle, right?" Caitlin asked. Caitlin was staring doubtfully at the circle, obviously nervous about the coming ritual.

"That's right."

Tara had been mixing up bottles of dried herbs. She handed one to Willow then they both moved to opposite sides of the shop.

"I hope that nothings going to happen to my shop." Anya said.

"Our shop is perfectly safe." Giles answered, sounding a little annoyed. He checked over the preperations then said, "Now it's just a matter of waiting." Giles pulled out a pocket watch and checked the time.

Willow slipped the bottle of herbs into her pocket and walked over to Claudia, saying "Can I have a word?" Indicating the training room.

As they went in Claudia asked, "Is something wrong?"

"I just wanted to ask you a bit about Samuel. How well do you know him?"

"Not all that well. I went to meet him before I spoke to Tara but..."

"You mean you hadn't met him before you came here. How did you know it was safe?"

"Well he was recommended to me by a demon called..."

Now Willow started to lose her temper, "A demon?" Willow started picturing all the things that could have happened and cursing herself for not having this conversation earlier, "I thought as a watcher would know that demons are bad."

Claudia stepped back holding her hands up, "This is a good demon, his name is Whistler. He serves the so called powers that be."

"So he's a good guy? You're sure about that?" Willow still sounded doubtful as she said this.

"He generally helps people find their destinies." Seeing that Willow was still skeptical she went on, "It was Whistler who got Angel fighting for the good guys rather than living on the streets eating rats. Look Whistler and I aren't like this," Claudia held her hand up with her index and forefingers entwined, "but I know him well enough to know he wouldn't send Tara into danger."

"Good, sorry I just wanted to make certain." It occurred to Willow that Buffy had mentioned someone called Whistler. Unfortunately she hadn't said much other than the fact that he was annoying. Willow decided that she was going to have to do some research on him.

"I quite understand. Now we should probably get ready." Turning Claudia walked back into the main room.

***

As Willow went back into the main room and took up her position Tara asked, "Is something wrong?"

"No, I just wanted to clear some stuff up." Willow answered.

As she did so the door opened. Faith walked to stop Brandon from getting in. A second later she came flying across the room, slamming into the far wall.

"You bitch." Brandon said looking at Caitlin, "Your nosy friends aren't going to help you."

"What do you want?" Caitlin asked, trying to keep the worry she was feeling from showing.

"First I want my book back, second I want you to die." He was obviously trying to sound menacing as he said this, but was failing miserably.

"What? Just because I threw you out of our group?" Caitlin couldn't believe that he was going to kill her over this.

"I am just so tired of you people thinking you can tell me what to do, how to behave. Bossing me about like I'm a child. Well I'm not and I'm going to show you all..." He stopped as Willow and Tara quickly moved forward and threw their herbs on him, chanting the words to the banishing spell. "What the..." Brandon suddenly grabbed his head, crying out in pain. Light began pouring out of his mouth and eyes, forming into a vaguely humanoid shape. It roared at Giles, then it dispersed. Brandon fell to the ground, unconscious.

"Is that it?" Faith asked as she picked herself up, "Did we win?"

"Yes, that is it." Giles said.

"What about him?" Tara indicated Brandon.

"I suppose we should get him to a hospital."

Faith walked over to him and said, "What a loser."

***

"So thanks for all your help." Caitlin said to Willow and Tara when they had gotten home. "I really appreciate it. Also I'm sorry about being so much trouble, I don't mean to be." Caitlin glanced down, sheepishly. It ocurred to her that her ability to get into trouble might have cost her two of her best friends.

"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said those things." Tara said.

"So we're okay then?" Caitlin started to grow a little hopeful.

"Yes we are."

"Good. Though that Samuel guy, I didn't like him."

"But you hardly met him."

"I know, I just got this feeling there was, I don't know something wrong with him. I maybe wrong but I think you ought to be careful with him. Well I'll see you around."

As Caitlin left Willow asked Tara, "You seemed to be argueing with Caitlin earlier. Is something wrong?"

Tara shook her head, "I don't know what happened, one moment we were talking the next I was yelling at her. I just felt so angry all of a sudden."

"It's probably just stress, though what about what Caitlin said about Samuel, do you think she's right?"

"I don't know. He seems okay, but maybe we need to be more careful from now."

***

As they went up to bed Tara found her thoughts going over what had happened that afternoon, feeling guilty over the way she had acted.

Willow couldn’t help but sense her lover’s unease and, as she snuggled up to her, she asked, “What’s wrong baby?”

"I'm still worried about the way I shouted at Caitlin," came Tara's whispered reply.

"Can you think of any reason why you did?"

"No, that's why I'm worried."

"Well we've both been busy and there's been a lot of pressure."

"I know but..."

"And to be honest I've been feeling pretty bad tempered lately."

"You have?"

"Yes, so really I don't think there's anything for you to worry about."

***

Tara stood on a cliff face. Below her there was a large forest. The sun was visible high above her and there was a slight breeze. Tara felt a hand taking hers and, turning, she wasn't surprised to see Willow there.

"It'll be okay." Willow said.

Tara nodded and they turned away from the cliff face. Anya and Xander stood a short distance off with Dawn near them.

"Is it much farther?" Dawn asked.

Suddenly Faith appeared over an outcrop, "Come on, we're almost there." Following her they soon saw what she had seen, a tall black tower, rising up into the clouds.

Tara felt Willow squeeze her hand and squeezing back, she said, "It'll be okay." Looking up she was surprised to see the sun next to the tower. Turning to the left she saw that there was a sun there too. "Two suns."

***

Tara was lying in darkness, a weight resting on her chest. It took a few moments to realise that she was in her room and that the weight was Willow's arm. Tara started to move Willow's arm, only for it to be pulled away.

"What's wrong?" Willow asked, her voice a little groggy from having just woken up.

"I was just going to get some water. Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."

"That's okay."

Tara got up and went to the kitchen. Rinsing a glass out she filled it with water. Feeling a sneeze coming Tara grabbed a tissue and held it to her mouth. Pulling it away she was surprised to see flecks of black on the tissue. Then, throwing it away, she forgot about it and went back to bed.

***

When Tara got back to her room she was surprised to see Willow still awake. "I thought that yould be asleep by now."

"I was waiting for you." Willow answered as she moved the sheets to let Tara get into bed.

"You didn't have to." Tara half protested.

"Also I was thinking." Willow’s words were backed up by the thoughtful expression on her face.

"Anything in particular?" Tara moved to rest her head on Willow's shoulder.

"You know what we should do?"

"No." Tara was curious to find out Willow’s idea.

"We should go for a picnic sometime."

"You mean the group?"

"No I mean just the two of us. We should go somewhere quiet and just spend the day together."

"That sounds nice." Tara smiled happily at the thought of just the two of them getting away together.

"So you want to?"

"I'd love to.” Tara agreed, before adding in a playful tone, “That was a really good idea that I had."

"Yes it was, you're so clever." Willow whispered sleepily. Then as she realised what Tara had said, Willow frowned, "Wait a minute, who's idea was it?"

Tara looked up at Willow and smiling said, "See, two can play at that game."

Very interesting update.

Tara's abrupt personality change during her discussion with Caitlin has me worried; something doesn't seem right there. Also concerned about Tara coughing up something black onto her tissue. :paranoid

Elsewhere, Tara's dream was most definitely intriguing and the explanation for Brendon's power; and the subsequent extraction of it, very good. I get the feeling that we haven't seen the last of him, though... Claudia and Anya continue to make me laugh (Anya referring to the Magic Box as 'my shop' and Giles' annoyance :lol ).

Fantastic update, eagerly awaiting more! :)

Previously

Spike was just leaving Willy's Place when he was stopped by a large muscle bound demon. It loomed over Spike and had large horns growing from it's head, and was walking on cloven hooves. Spike tried to get around it but the demon stopped him again. "Right you've asked for this." Spike put his game face on.

"I'm not here to fight you." The demon said in a low monotone voice which was completely different from it's normal harsh growl. The thing that struck Spike as being oddest was that this type of Demons vocabulary normally didn't extend beyond, 'I crush you! Crush you to goo!' "I want to help you."

"Who says that I want your help?"

The demon laughed, it's voice still oddly flat, "They were right. You are the slayers bitch."

"Hey, I've killed for less than that."

"Killing, yes you used to be good at that. I can help you be good at it again."

"What, you're going to take this chip out? I've heard that one before."

"You don't need the chip out, You've killed with it in."

Spike nodded remembering how he had killed that girl when he had gone out with Drusilla. "How did you know about that?"

"It's all about mind over matter." The demon said, ignoring Spikes question. "If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Now if you were to kill her you would show everyone you are still someone to be feared even with the chip."

Spike laughed, "So that's it. You want me to kill the slayer for you."

"Not the slayer. The key. Kill her and everyone will know that you're still the monster you always were."

"That's an idea. " Spike returned to his normal appearance and seemed to be thinking about it. Spike suddenly grabbed the demon by the horns and, spinning it's head around, he broke it's neck. Dropping the body he said, "No."

"That was rude. "A second, smaller demon that seemed to be covered with maggots, approached, it's voice the same monotone as the first demon.

"Okay, you want some as well do you?" Spike said, feeling pumped up after the kill.

Moving faster than seemed possible the demon punched Spike and knocked him out. Then as if acting on some silent signal, a dozen demons of various races came out of the shadows. They picked up Spike and carried him off. They ignored the dead demon, a strange black liquid running out of its mouth, nose and eyes.

***

Spike woke up to find himself hanging from a tree, his feet several meters off the ground. A quick check showed him that his hands were chained together, around a particularly thick branch of the tree. Spike tried to break the chains. When that failed he tried to either break the branch or pull himself off of it. His actions grew more and more frantic as time went on. He kept on struggling right up until the sun came up.

Chapter 8

Paula precariously balanced the pile she was carrying on one arm and reached for another one. Having spoken to some friends she had made up a list of books she should read, so this time she didn't feel quite so lost. Also those friends had agreed to look after the little angel, so this trip was a lot less stressful. Not that she didn't love her daughter just some times she drove her mental. Distracted she tipped her arm a little, causing the books to start to fall. Quickly grabbing them she managed to stop the catastrophe, but dropped the book she had just picked up. As she turned to get it a young to middle aged woman bent to pick it up. "Oh, thankyou. I really am a klutz today."

"That's a lot of books that you've got there."

"Oh well I just started my own coven and these are just some that my friends suggested."

"Your own coven, cool." As she handed the book back the woman noted the slightly stressed look on Paula's face, "Or not."

"Well it is a lot of pressure. That's pretty much the only thing that made me come back here as I heard some pretty scary things about the owners."

"You have?" The other woman seemed to be quite excited by this, "Come on, spill."

"Oh well I heard that one of them, the red head, regularly takes on hell gods and that she can hurl lightning bolts and breath fire." She stopped as she noticed that the other woman was laughing, "Did I say something funny?"

"Sorry, I've just never heard Willow being talked about like that. She's harmless really."

"So that stuff isn't true?"

"Well she did fight a hell god and throw lightning, but it was only once. Also she only breaths fire when she's eaten curry. Well I better get going."

Putting the books on a table, Paula put out her hand to shake the other woman's, "I'm Paula."

"Dawn." As she turned and walked away all Paula could think was, 'her hair is so shiny.'

***

Walking down to the cafe area Dawn found Jennifer sitting there with a pint of Guiness in front of her.

"I hope you're not drinking under age." She said, walking up behind her.

Jennifer jumped, then, turning around, "Mom, you scared me."

"Sorry. So what about the drink. You know we Summers women never react well to beer."

"Firstly I'm not a Summers I'm a McCenzy, secondly it's not for me."

Sitting down opposite Jennifer Dawn said, "So who's it for? You got a boyfriend?"

"If I did, I wouldn't bring him here." Dawn nodded, seeing the sense in this, "It's for Whistler actually."

"Whistler?" The amusement had gone from Dawn's face, "Well at least that reprobate has enough sense to only come here when Willow's not around. So what's he been telling you?"

"I was asking about how Willow and Tara came to be running this place. It turned out to be a lot longer a story than I expected."

"Yeah, and I bet he's leaving out a load, like the part that he played in it all."

"He said he didn't play an active role in the story, isn't that true?"

"Oh he played an active role alright, in a moving everyone around like chess pieces kind of way. So where'd you get to?"

"Um, I think he'd just gotten to where you all helped Caitlin with the curse."

"Oh right, that." Dawn smiled to herself as she said, "That Brandon was such a loser. It's now that the story get's interesting," Dawn winked as she added, "because I'm in it a lot more."

***

Tara was stirring the pancake batter making sure it was the right thickness when Dawn came down and slumped into a chair. "I was just making breakfast. Do you want funny shapes?"

"I guess." Dawn mumbled, not looking up.

Going over to sit next to dawn, Tara asked, "Is something wrong?"

"No, I'm fine." Dawn tried to look cheerful, but failed miserably.

"Dawn, you know that you can tell us anything. If there's anything wrong at school?" Tara asked, trying to coax Dawn into opening up to her.

Dawn looked at Tara sadly, "It's not school. I just had a bad dream."

"Do you want to talk about it?"

Dawn hesitated a moment before realising that actually she did want to. "I dreamt that I had gotten home from school and mom and Buffy were both here. Mom was working on something for the gallery, Buffy was being annoying as usual. It was just like before. Then I woke up and..." Dawn stopped as she burst into tears.

Tara moved to embrace Dawn, holding her tight unti she had stopped crying.

Dawn moved away saying, "I'm sorry, I know you said that Buffy is somewhere good now..." Willow and Tara had told Dawn about the seance, though they still hadn't figured out how to tell her about the abandoned plan to resurrect Buffy.

Tara raised her hand to Dawn's cheek saying, "It's okay to be upset. I ... We all miss her." Tara blinked, trying to hold back her own tears. He knew that she was going to have to be strong if she was going to help Dawn.

"But it's not your fault that she's dead." Dawn whispered softly.

"Dawn you shouldn't blame yourself." Tara held Dawn tighter, raising her hand to stroke Dawn's hair.

"Even if I am to blame." Dawn said, determined to take responsibilty for what had happened.

"Why? What did you do that caused her death?" Tara knew it was natural for Dawn to feel some guilt about what had happened, but she was determined to make her see that this guilt was misplaced.

"She killed herself because of me." Dawn waiting expectantly as if thinking that with these words she would convince Tara that she was indeed to blame for Buffy's death and everything that had gone wrong last year.

"Because of what someone else had done to you. You can't blame yourself for that."

"Well If I hadn't been Buffy's sister then..." For some reason Dawn felt she needed to convince Tara that she was right, while a part of her hoped that Tara would be able to convince her.

"Again that was something that someone else did to you. You haven't told me what you did." Tara insisted, wanting to get Dawn to recognise the logic of what she was saying.

Dawn was going to argue when something occurred to her. "You're right, there's someone who's much more to blame." Jumping up and drying her eyes Dawn said, "I don't think I'll have any breakfast, I need to get to school." Turning she quickly ran out of the room.

For a moment Tara was too shocked by this sudden change to know what to say. Then realising that Dawn was almost out the door she called across the room, "Don't you want a lift?"

"No that's okay. I was going to go with some friends." Dawn called as she headed out the door. Sitting back Tara tried to work out what had just happened.

***

Willow glanced quickly round the library wondering how long it would take to find Amy. Spotting a map she went over to look at it. "Okay so I'm here, now where is Amy?" She gasped as a small arrow appeared on the map, "Well that's handy." Willow took off towards the arrow and soon found Amy sitting at a small table, a book open in front of her. It was obvious that she wasn't reading it as she was staring into space. Willow sat down opposite her, saying brightly, "Hello Amy."

"Hello, Um..." Amy's brow furoughed in concentration a moment, "Willow."

Smiling gently Willow asked, "So how are you? Have you spoken to your father?"

"He doesn't want me. Said I'm to weird for him"

"Oh, I'm sorry." Willow murmurred in a compassionate tone, "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to stay here. Samuel said..."Amy trailed off and turned to look at the book.

"What did Samuel say?" Willow prompted.

"huh?" Amy looked confused.

"What did Samuel say?"

"Oh just that I could stay here as long as I wanted." Amy shrugged, seeming confused by Willow's interest.

"Well that's good." Willow felt a little worried about this as she remembered what Caitlin had said about Samuel. "You don't have to though. I mean you could stay with Tara and me. We've got a room you can use."

"No I like it here." Amy answered absently. Picking up the book she got up and walked away. Willow watched Amy leave, concerned by her strange behaviour and wondering about the cause.

***

That afternoon Willow and Tara got together to go over the bills. Once they had paid all the urgent bills Tara took a look at a calculation Willow had done of how much money they had. Frowning a little she said, "We're still very overdrawn."

"Well it'll take a while to pay it off." Willow explained, "The point is we're starting to reduce it."

"That is good." Tara agreed as she put the paper down, "So did you see Amy?"

"Oh yes." Willow answered, "To be honest I'm worried about her."

Tara frowned at this, "Is something wrong?"

"I don't know, she just seemed very vague. Like she was having trouble focusing. I'm worried that she was a rat for too long and it's started to affect her."

Tara nodded, "That is possible. We need to look into a way to help her."

"Yeah you're right. I just hope she's gong to be okay with Samuel. I mean after what Caitlin said."

"I know, but I've been with Samuel a lot and I haven't sensed anything untoward about him. I think Caitlin is mistaken." Tara shrugged, seeming to dismiss Caitlin's concerns.

"I guess that you would know if there was something wrong." Willow smiled affectionately at her lover as she said, "Okay, panic over."

***

As soon as Dawn had a chance she snuck out of school and made her way to Spike's crypt. Pushing the door open she said "Spike are you in here? We haven't seen you..." she was stopped as she saw it was empty. Undaunted she went to Spike underground hideout, but that was also empty. "Where is he?" Dawn was starting to grow worried. She hadn't seen Spike for a while now. She just hoped he hadn't gotten himself hurt.

***

Claudia stared at the man opposite her, her expression a mixture of contempt and annoyance. She hated having to work with other people, especially people like this, but sometimes she didn't have any choice. "So how is the surveillance going?"

"It's going fine lady." The man leant back in his chair as he answered in a dismissive tone, "I've got some of my men watching the witches round the clock."

Claudia frowned, not liking his attitude. "You don't need me to remind you of the consequences should something happen to Tara."

The man started to grow angry, ever since he'd taken this job, this woman had been badgering him. "Listen I've had just about enough of your threats." he blinked as he realise that Claudia was no longer sitting in front of him. He gasped as Claudia grabbed his hair and pulled his head back, exposing his throat.

"Little man I don't make threats." Claudia looked up as she heard someone come in, "What the hell is she doing here?" She asked in a confused tone.

***

Dawn straightened her clothes and putting a determined look on her face, she strode into the bar, trying to give off an air of menace. She almost lost her nerve when she saw the variety of demons around her. Gathering her courage Dawn walked to the bar, where Willy was drying a glass. After waiting a while for him to notice her, Dawn banged her hand on the counter. Finally looking up Willy said, "Beat it kid, I don't serve minors." He went back to the glass.

"I don't want a drink, I want information."

Willy cast a nervous glance over at a group of demons over by the door. "Yeah well I don't do that any more."

"I just want to know where Spike is." Dawn pleaded.

Willy just shrugged and went back to the glass.

"I suggest that you answer her." Claudia said as she walked over to stand next to Dawn.

"Claudia what are you doing here?" Dawn asked her, surprised to see the watcher there.

"I could ask you the same thing." She turned back to Willy and said, "Well?"

"The thing is I don't know. He was here a couple of weeks ago but I haven't seen him since."

"I know where Spike is." A demon who had been sitting quietly by the bar suddenly said, "The traitor's finally gotten what's coming to him."

Claudia reached out and grabbing the back of the demons head, she slammed his face into the bar, "Elaborate."

"I saw him being attacked by a demon. Then a group of them carried him off."

"Oh." Dawn said, not sure how to feel about this.

"Well then ladies if that's all." Willy prompted, wanting to get rid of them.

"Wait there's one more thing. Wat do you know about a demon called Doc?"

"Never heard of him."

"Come on we better get going." Dawn nodded and let Claudia lead her out.

"So what are you doing here?" Dawn asked again.

"The same thing as you. Looking for information. This Spike, he was a friend?"

"I don't know. I mean he was a vampire but he was always good to me, I guess."

"Then I'm sorry. What about Doc, who's that?"

Dawn's expression hardened at this, "It's his fault that Buffy's dead."

"Ah revenge. I don't suppose it would do much good to remind you of the old Chinese proverb about revenge."

"No, it really wouldn't" Dawn answered in a cold voice.

"Okay then, I'll have to tell the others about Spike." Claudia said in a thoughtful tone.

"Please don't tell them I was here."

Claudia sighed, "Very well then, I won't"

"Thank you."

"On one condition." Claudia said in a stern voice, "I want you to promise me you won't skip school again."

Dawn nodded, feeling releived, "Okay."

"Good."

***

When Claudia got back to her apartment she called out, "Leonard, Leonard?" A large grey cat walked out from under the bed, "Now what were you doing under there? What were you doing under there, hey?" She put the cat down on the bed then went on, "I have some good news. It seems that Samuel was able to turn Amy back into a human, so he should be able to cure you too. Won't that be good?" Claudia smiled happilly at the cat as she said this.

The cat sat down and began licking it's shoulder.

"I won't take you to see him just yet."

The cat stopped licking himself and turned to stare at Claudia.

"Now, father, don't look at me like that. There's some things I need to do first. You see I need to get everything ready, so that when you get turned back into a human we can be a proper family at last." She started stroking his head, "Without your silly temper getting in the way, won't that be wonderful? You just stay here, while I make a quick call."

***

"Who was that on the phone?" Tara asked Willow as she came back into the room.

"It was Claudia. She was at Willy's trying to get some information on the kidnappings when she overheard a demon talking about Spike."

"Spike? Where's he been hiding himself?"

"She said this demon had seen him being carried off by a group of demons. She was pretty sure that he was dead."

"Oh." Was all Tara could think to say.

"That's what I said. It's weird. He tried to kill me more than once, but we knew him. I don't know how to feel."

Tara embraced Willow and rubbing her back she said," It's okay to be upset. Like you said it's someone that we knew who won't be around any more."

Willow nodded, resting her head on Tara's shoulder. "Well we did have a lot of good times. I mean there was the time that he kidnapped me and threatened to shove a broken bottle in my face. And the time that he wanted to kill Buffy but she wasn't around so he settled for me." Willow stopped and a frown formed on her face as she tried to figure something out. "Why am I so upset again?"

"Um..."

Moving away Willow went on. "It's more than that. I mean," Willow held her left hand at the level of her neck, "this is how much Faith has hurt me and this," She raised her other hand above her head, "Is how much Spike has hurt me. So why did I find it so easy to forgive Spike? Why am I finding it so hard to forgive Faith?"

"Maybe you could forgive Spike because he was harmless." Tara suggested.

"Well he couldn't attack us but that didn't stop him hurting us." Willow corrected.

"I remember." Tara nodded as she remembered how Spike had played Willow and her friends off against each other, "I have an idea. Um, it's probably wrong and if it is, just say so and I'll never mention it again." Tara's voice grew increasingly uncertain as she said this.

"Okay." Willow said in an encouraging tone, trying to show Tara that she could say anything.

"Well maybe the reason that you're finding it harder to forgive Faith is that you were jealous. You were angry about the fact that Faith was horning in on your friendship with Buffy."

"No, that's wrong." Willow started pacing round the room, "That's completely wrong, you couldn't be any wronger." Willow stopped pacing and turned to Tara, "That is for the correct value of the word wrong, which is right."

Tara tried to decipher that. Then, giving up, she asked, "So you agree?"

Willow nodded then said, in a resigned tone, "And since Faith is obviously here to stay, I guess I'm going to have to deal with that."

Ugh, so not liking Samuel and Claudia. Claudia cannot be trusted. She's using w/t to get samuel to do stuff for her. Samuel obviously won't do anything unless he can get something back. Grr, I wish w/t would wake up and stop trusting this Samuel, they have no reason to.

Thanks for the update Justin!

Chapter 9

The priests hurried into a small barren room, which was lit by flickering torches. The only furniture was a small wooden table which had a large leather bound book on it.

"So this is it." The younger of the two priests said, his tone frightened.

"Yes." The other priest, an older man, relied, "Quite possibly the most evil book ever written."

"Why don't we just burn it?"

"Try." The younger priest took a torch off of the wall then hesitated, he could still remember how the old woman had confessed that she had been given the book by the devil. "Go on, it cannot hurt you unless you read it." Nodding he held the torch next to the book. Even after a few seconds the hadn't caught light. pulling the torch a way he saw the book hadn't been harmed by the fire. "All attempts to destroy the book have failed."

"It truly is the devil's work." The young priest took a panicked step back. Despite what the older priest had said he was still afraid that the book might hurt him or his immortal soul. He was just glad that that old Maclay woman, the one responsible for the book, had been burnt at the stake.

"Yes it is." the older priest dropped the chest he had been carrying on the table. "We must dispose of this thing and pray that it is never seen again."

***

Faith Jumped up and kicked the lead vampire in the chest, knocking it several feet back. Shortly after they had started patrolling Faith, Willow and Tara had run into a group of five vampires. Two of them had gone after Willow and Tara while the remaining three attacked Faith. While the vampire that Faith had kicked recovered one of the others grabbed her from behind while the third moved to bite her. Faith kicked it away then pushed the vampire holding her back into a gravestone. The vampire shrieked as the crucifix shaped stone burnt it. Pulling loose Faith drew her stake and stuck it through the vampires heart. Seeing the second vampire running at her out of the corner of her eye she reversed the direction of the stroke and staked that one. Seeing that Willow and Tara had dealt with the two vampires they'd been fighting Faith started looking round for the last vampire. She was just starting to think that it had run off when a hand reached up out of a hole in the ground. Reaching down Faith pulled the vampire part way out, then staked it.

Tara knelt next to her, "It looks like it was dug up from the inside."

Faith nodded "Another new vampire joining the ranks."

"That's not the only one." Willow said from a short distance off. Turning they saw what had attracted her attention. Several rows of graves had been dug up.

"I guess someone's been busy."

***

"So you say there were more than thirty graves that had been dug up?" Claudia asked. After they'd finished patrolling Faith had gone to report what they'd found to her watcher.

"Yes."

"And they'd all been dug up from the inside?"

"That's what I said." faith answered, starting to grow impatient.

"Well that is worrying. If there is a vampire group recruiting in such large numbers then they must be planning something."

"You think?" Faith snapped.

"Right well we need to look into this. Come to the Magic Box early tomorrow."

The next evening Willow went to tutor Megan. Leaving Megan to do some computing problems Willow decided to make some notes about the latest menace. She opened up her notebook and flicked to the right page. Opening her pen case she mulled over them a moment, a thoughtful expression on her face. Finally deciding on the right colour, Willow took out a pen and wrote;

Fact: There have been a large number of open graves recently

She considered this statement a moment, chewing on the end of the pen. Then she wrote;

Fact: There hasn't been any increase in vampire activity.

Willow thought about this, then put the pen back and took out a different coloured one;

Supposition: Either whoever is behind this is trying to keep it quiet or it isn't...

Willow was broken from her thoughts by a distraught cry, "I can't do this.".

Quickly snapping the book shut Willow turned to see what was happening. Megan was staring at the computer she had been working on, a look of horror on her face. "What's wrong?"

"What's wrong? I can't figure this stupid program out. It's only supposed to print the answer at the end but instead it keeps printing out all this rubbish." Megan whined.

"Well let's take a look." Willow said, tentatively. As Megan moved out of the way Willow took a look at her code, quickly spotting what was wrong, "See, here's the problem. You've indented the last line, so that the computer thinks that it's part of the loop."

"I'm never going to remember this." Megan looked down and muttered, "I'm just stupid."

"No, you're not. Remember how last week you told me all about what's going on at school. Who's popular and who's going out with whom."

"Yeah." Megan said slowly, not seeming to understand what Willow was getting at.

"Well if you can keep all that straight you can remember this, but you have to put in some effort." Willow explained patiently. "Because if you're not willing to try then you're just wasting both our time."

"Okay, okay, I'll try." Megan smirked and added, "There's no need to crack the leather out."

"What the what?" Willow asked, not understanding.

"I mean there's no need to go all dominatrixy on me like you did my brother." Megan explained, clearly amused.

For a moment Willow didn't know what to say. She'd no idea that Parker had told anyone about what had happened with her vampire double. Blushing fiercely she said, "That wasn't me."

"But he said it looked just like you. Who was it?"

"Would you believe my evil twin?" Willow asked in a small voice.

"Oh I can totally relate to that. Not that I have an evil twin but I have a friend, well she's more an aquaintance of a friend. Anyway..." Willow sighed and tried to seem interested as Megan rambled on.

Once she had gotten to the library, Tara quickly used one of the maps to track down Amy. Amy was sitting in a secluded part of the library, slowly copying a page from a book using a caligraphy pen. Tara sat down next to her, "Hello Amy."

"Hello." Amy replied, not looking up from her work. After a few seconds the pen stopped and Amy looked up, "Who are you?"

"I'm Tara. Willow's girlfriend. We met briefly last week."

"Oh yeah."

"Willow was a little worried about you. That you might have been affected by your time as a rat." Tara explained gently.

"No, not a rat anymore. I'm all human now." Amy went back to her work.

"I know I mean..."

Looking up again Amy interrupted, "Who are you?"

"I'm Tara." Tara could feel herself growing impatient with Amy. She tried to suppress, it telling herself that it wasn't Amy's fault.

Amy went to get some more ink, but caught the ink well with her hand, knocking it over.

Tara jumped up as the ink poured on her skirt, shouting hotly "You stupid bitch."

"I'm sorry." Amy shrunk back away from Tara.

"Goddess, you dumb cow. This skirt is ruined. I'm going to beat you..." Tara stopped as she saw the terror on Amy's face. "Oh goddess, I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry." Turning Tara fled to the exit.

Samuel, who had been standing a short distance away watching, whispered to himself, "Oh that really was delicious." Turning he was surprised to find Emma standing there. "Did you want something?" He asked in a harsh tone.

"Tara seemed to be rather upset." Emma's voice was low and respectful, but she was looking at him with evident hatred.

"And that is your business, how?" Nodding Emma turned to leave. As she walked away Samuel shouted, "Remember, you old hag, I own you."

Tara pulled the address out of her pocket and examined it as she walked down the street. Finally coming to the right house she went to the door and rang the bell. A few moments later Willow answered. "Tara, is something wrong?" Willow was surprised, and a little worried since Tara hadn't visited her before at work.

"You could say that. C-can we talk?" Willow's worry increased as she realised how nervous and upset Tara was.

"Sure." Taking Tara's arm Willow led her into the living room. Tara then explained what had happened.

"Then I was suddenly yelling. I felt so angry." Tara said in a sad tone.

"You mean like what happened with Caitlin?"

"No, more than that. I felt like I..." Tara stopped, seeming to be flustered.

Willow raised her hand to Tara's cheek, "It's okay."

"I wanted to hit her. I-I really wanted to hurt Amy."

Willow put her arms round Tara and holding her said, "It's going to be alright."

"Is it? I mean it's obvious that this is more than just stress."

"Yes it is. We're going to work out what's happening and we're going to work through this together." Willow turned to look into Tara's eyes before saying, "I can finish up here early then we can both go and work on getting an answer."

"I can't. I mean I'm needed at the Magic Box. Anya's reorganising and I said that I'd help."

"Okay then. We can look into it once you're finished." Willow raised her hand to stroke Tara's hair, trying to reassure her.

"Thanks." Tara leant her head against Willow's shoulder. They stayed like that for a while then Tara said, "I better let you get back to your student."

Faith was about to wrap up her patrol for the night when she heard a scream from down an alley. Quickly running down it, Faith drew her stake. She found a woman being attacked by two men. As she got closer she changed that assessment. Their skin was pale and decayed and their eyes were totally lifeless. Grabbing the first and throwing it against a wall Faith attacked the second, driving her stake into it's heart. Unphased by the stake sticking from it's chest the creature backhanded Faith knocking her to the ground. Jumping up Faith kicked the creature way from the woman. Grabbing her Faith pushed her down the street. "Get out of here" She yelled before turning back to the two creatures. They were both up and moving towards her. "You really are starting to annoy me." Faith growled as she threw herself at them.

"Okay, so these need to go up under the counter." Anya said as she handed Tara a couple of boxes.

As Tara walked to the stairs she wondered if Anya really wanted them moved or if this was just a ruse to get her out of the way so that she and Xander could make out or... 'Don't go there.' Tara told herself. As she got up to the main floor Tara looked around noting that Claudia was working at the back of the shop, while Giles was up on the second floor. Putting the boxes down Tara looked under the counter. She was dismayed to see that there wasn't any room there and began to try to rearrange everything. After trying several arrangements, Tara was finally able to get the boxes in. As she turned Tara spotted a statuette that she had removed and not put back. A quick glance told her that it wasn't going to go in. "Dammit." Tara swore, hitting the counter top. Then shaking her hand she said, "Ow!"

"You know the training rooms full of stuff for you to hit." Anya said as she walked up to Tara. Taking the statuette she placed it on a shelf, "There all done."

"I'm sorry, I didn't..." Tara stopped as the doors burst open and Faith staggered in. Here face was badly bruised and there was blood coming from her lip and nose. It was clear that determination was the only thing keeping her standing. She took a couple of steps, then stumbled.

Only to be caught by Claudia, "It's okay. I've got you."

For a moment Tara was confused. She had been sure that Claudia had been at the back of the shop. Realising that that wasn't possible, she decided that she just hadn't been paying attention. While Claudia and Giles helped Faith, Tara went to phone Willow.

Faith described what had happened to her while Claudia cleaned up her wounds. Willow arrived about halfway through the explanation and went to stand next to Tara. "Has no one over told you that discretion is the better part of valour?" Claudia asked as opened up a bottle of antiseptic and put some on a cotton wool bud.

"Not my style." Faith winced as Claudia put the antiseptic on a cut.

"I didn't think you had any style." Xander muttered.

Faith glanced at him, but decided to not respond.

"Maybe you should try describing the creatures again."

"They were dead, but not vampires. They were slow, but really strong and nothing I did seemed to hurt them." Faith closed her eyes as she tried to remember any details. "They were wicked smelly and one seemed to be pretty decayed."

"Zombies" Giles and Claudia said at the same time.

Xander walked over to Willow and muttered, "It's watcher vision in stereo."

"There must be connected to the disturbed graves." Claudia said.

"So someone is raising an army of zombies. To what purpose?"

Tara who had been quiet till this point, came over and asked, "If this has been going on a while why haven't we seen more of these creatures?"

No one seemed to have an answer to this.

The next afternoon, as soon as school ended, Dawn crept into Spike's crypt and began pulling drawers open and going through them. She had wanted to come all day but had the feeling that Claudia would somehow know if she broke her promise. Searching the drawers she found lots of pictures of Buffy and items of her clothing but not the thing that she had been hoping for. She had hoping she might find a list of contacts so that she could find someone who could her help her deal with Doc. Finally giving up Dawn climbed out of the crypt and went home.

***

"You're home late." Tara said as Dawn came in.

"Um I stayed back to do some home work."

"I hope that they're not overworking you." Ever since their talk a couple of days ago Tara had worried that she'd been so caught up in her own problems that she'd been neglecting Dawn.

"Oh well, you know." Dawn sat down at the counter, "So is Willow going to be in tonight?"

"Well I think she's going to go out for a quick patrol but she'll be in most of the night, me too."

"Oh good."

Tara walked over to Dawn." Listen I know we've both been kind of busy. We don't mean to neglect you, it's just things have been a bit crazy lately."

"I know, it's cool." Dawn shrugged, trying to make it seem like it wasn't a big deal.

"When things settle down a little we'll spend more time together." Tara promised.

"Well you could let me patrol with you." Dawn suggested, not really expecting the idea to go down well.

Tara frowned knowing she should refuse, but also knowing what it felt like to feel excluded. Finally she came up with a compromise, "What about if we let you help us research? Just to start with at least."

"Really?" Dawn said, starting to grow excited.

"Yes, really." Tara smiled, a little bemused by the reaction.

Dawn shrieked, "Wow! That would be so cool." Then calming a little she said, "Sorry, I promise I won't do that again. I can be mature, you'll see." With that she took off upstairs.

Willow spent the evening studying for a test that she had the next day. Going up to their room Tara asked, "So are you ready for that test tomorrow?"

"As ready as I'll ever be." Willow answered closing her book up. She thought a moment, tapping the book before saying, "I'll do some more reading tomorrow morning." Willow walked over to Tara and said, "I'm sorry that we didn't get a chance to look into your problem last night."

"It's okay. I mean what happened to Faith couldn't be helped. Anyway I did some reading and I found this crystal." Tara held up the necklace she was wearing, "It's amethyst, it helps calm your nerves."

"Well that should help but I think it's just treating the symptoms of something else."

Tara nodded, "I know but if it stops me blowing up at my friends then I'll take it." Tara took a step away from Willow then said, "I'm going to talk to Samuel about it again."

"Are you sure that this is something he can help with?" Willow questioned, she was growing more and more uncertain about Samuel despite Tara's assurances.

"What do you..." Tara jumped as there was a knock at the door.

"It'll just be Anya and Xander." Willow reached out her hand to soothe Tara.

Tara flinched from Willow's touch, saying bluntly, "You better get going."

"Yeah, I'll speak to you later." Willow went down to the door feeling worried. Both about what Caitlin had said about Samuel and the fact that Tara seemed to be pulling away from her.

***

"This is all Faith's fault." Xander complained, "Why'd she have to get injured anyway?"

"I don't think that she did it on purpose." Willow said, immediately thinking, 'I'm defending Faith? The world really has gone turvy topsy'.

"Well no, I was just saying..." Xander stopped as he realised he didn't know what he was just saying. changing the subject he said, "So zombies, that very ... zombieish."

"It's icky." Willow looked around a moment, "Where's Anya?"

"She's... She was here a moment ago." After a short search of the graveyard they found her crouching behind a gravestone.

"Anya where have you.." Xander started. He stopped as Anya turned and hushed him. She beckoned them over and pointing out over the graveyard said, "Look." they saw a pair of men a short distance off wearing ceremonial clothes, their faces painted to look skull like. They had a small stone statue which was in between them. One of them was chanting in a strange language. Suddenly the statue began glowing and the earth of the graves began moving. After a while several figures pulled themselves out of the graves.

"That isn't good." Willow said, staring in horror at the creatures.

As one of the zombies turned to start walking towards them Anya whispered hurriedly, "We so need to get out of here."
