Part Eight
Tara was torn. To help Oz meant throwing away the only chance of her and Willow getting together. But to not help Oz? Good Goddess, she wasn't a monster. Not like so many who resided in Sunnydale. Besides, how could she even think that Willow wanted her? Shy, little stuttering Tara? Insecurity engulfed her. Willow was straight. Any attraction had purely been in her own mind. The kiss was a fluke. It would no doubt ruin their friendship. For Tara, the decision was made.
She would do the spell.
The most important thing to Tara was that Willow was happy. No matter what unhappiness that caused Tara herself, they both needed to follow their hearts.
"I'll d-do the spell," Tara said. "But I can't do it alone. I n-n-need Willow. To help. Together we're st-strong."
There was more going on there than met the eye, Buffy realized. Tara was behaving so strangely about the whole ordeal. The Slayer hoped that it was not demon prejudice and made a mental note to avoid all talk of her unconventional dating habits until the situation had been felt out further. "Great. Let's get you two wiccans set up right away. Speaking of witch, where's Will?"
                        *        *        *
"So, a surprise huh?" Willow was having second thoughts. Surprises on the Hellmouth tended to be of the nasty kind. Willow's assessment of the situation was both right and wrong.
"I got something special, just for you." Ruby reached into her hand bag. She fished around and slowly pulled out ... a chapstick, which she applied to her lips. "It's called information. This guy I'm fu-dating happened to mention something about a Daniel Osborn. That's your boy toy, right?"
Guilt plagued Willow's senses. But who was she really feeling guilty about, Tara or Oz?
"Yes. He was, is my boyfriend."
"Well, seeing how he ran off on you, I would say you're home free with Tara."
Willow was confused. "Ran off?"
Well actually he was kidnapped, but Ruby didn't feel like explaining.
Ruby put a comforting hand on her knee. "Look he's not even ... I hate to break it to you kid. You're beau's a wolf."
Willow was unfazed. "I know. He's been a werewolf since I met him."
"If that's what you wanna call it. But he's been quite the wolf all day." An unpleasant side effect from the massive amounts of drugs pumped into him by the initiative. But Ruby didn't feel like disclosing that information.
"But what should I-"
Tara and Buffy burst into the room.
"Oh thank God, we need to tell you-" Buffy realized the redhead was not alone. She slipped into blatantly obvious Scooby code speak. "You know Oz? How he, um, forgets to shave around the full moon. Well he's been spotted sporting major stubble.."
Tara attempted to help. "Yeah, we're talking full on b-bushman b-beard."
"And facial hair is NOT his best look," Buffy concluded.
"It's ok," Willow informed them, "Ruby knows. We were discussing... Um,"
Tara noticed Ruby's hand on Willow's knee. Goddess, what a perfect knee. Willow hadn't pushed it away. And Willow had told her about Oz and they hardly knew each other. She felt sick. What if Willow really was gay, but it was someone else she fancied?
"Great," Buffy said. "Then we don't have to beat around the bush. There's a spell, to turn Oz back to how he was. You and Tara can perform it."
"Actually it's to return someone to their true state," Tara corrected, "but it sh-should work. It's complicated, but together I think we can h-handle it."
"As long as we find Oz. He has to be present for the spell to work," Buffy added.
"I can help you with that," Ruby told them. She pulled the copy of Dangerous Liaisons out of her bookshelf, and a panel in the wall opened up to reveal a staircase. "Um, surprise!"
"Did anyone else know our dorms had secret passages?" Willow asked.
Ruby took Willow's hand. "Follow me down." Once more a pang of jealousy shot through Tara.
They found themselves in a huge lab filled with monsters of all shapes and sizes. There in a small cage sat Oz, all furry and growling.
"We've got about five minutes till security kicks in," Ruby warned. "Better get your asses in gear.
Willow and Tara locked eyes. They were terrified of what they might see in each other, or worse of what the other girl might see in them. But what they found was a mutual determination to do what was right. Tara lit a candle. She placed it between them. The two witches sat, cross-legged, still staring into each other's eyes. They linked hands. A pleasant tingle shot through Willow at the skin on skin contact. No, she scolded herself, no naughty thoughts while doing spells! It was taking enough effort on her part to keep focus and not let her eyes stray to the way Tara's lovely chest rose and fell as her breathing became more heavy. Tara began the chanting. Curiously enough, during spells her stutter always went away.
"Goddess Hecate we implore thee. Solidify thy true form, false form kill. Return to thy true soul. Do thy will!"
A bolt of power shot through the two of them. Tara's heart skipped a beat and so did Willow's, but was it the force of the spell or something else? Willow brushed a couple of sweat soaked strands from Tara's eyes. The blond gave her a little crooked smile, savoring the feel of Willow touch. That smile just killed Will. She had never wanted Tara more, onlookers and WB sensors be damned! She searched the blond's face for answers. Was Tara as aware as she was of the scorching heat between them?
Their tender moment was interrupted by a disapointed Buffy. "Damn, it didn't work."
Willow and Tara looked the cage and then looked at each other. They both knew the spell had worked. They had felt it. Hecate had secured his form beyond the shadow of a doubt.
Oz was still a wolf.
TBC....
Sex always leads to bad things on Buffy. Angel turned evil, Willow turned evil, Tara got shot, Buffy ended up dating Riley...
