the weight of the W/Tverse

Postby lipkandy » Fri Apr 11, 2003 4:59 pm

okay, strange question and possibly OT, but I just finished reading the bitch.com article on slash fanfic, "Fan/tastic Voyage" which is not bad (if you're a m/m slasher), but the writer either was not very thorough in their research, or was biased against W/T when it came to discussion of BTVS fiction:

Quote:
The acknowledged lesbian relationship of Buffy’s Willow and Tara, like the overt and obvious male/female relationships, did nothing for me, and indeed there doesn’t seem to be as much slash about that couple as there is about other pairings left subtextual by the show (like Buffy/Willow).

so I was wondering, how many W/T stories are there on the Pens? not to mention the plethora of other femmeslash pairings in the buffyverse. I'd like to have a number to throw back at them because this is so obviously false. :)

sorry if this is OT and feel free to repost at will.

thanks

mel (:bigkiss ), there's also other W/T fanfic sites you can get info on amount of fics too. I think extra flamey has a counter. or not. wiccan ways isn't exclusively w/t anymore so i guess you'd have to fish out the w/t centered fic.

but i would like to know how many completed fics are in our achive. if there are 25 threads in my preferences and 13 pages then we've got about 325 fics in the completed fics archive itself. that's a lot. lol...

I think W/T fanfic never found a home in traditional femslash hang outs online like pink rabbit precisely because it was canon. I think that may be the reason why to the author that there isn't as much, the reason is that it resides in untraditional places on its own, such as pens.

a question for my disclaimer

Postby Rob Ty Ut » Thu Apr 17, 2003 4:29 am

wow. I so want to share my stories with the kittens, but I need to know a question for my disclaimer.

In one story I am writing, Willow and Tara ended up being transported to the set of "I Love Lucy", and obviously I know to credit Mutant Enemy for the BtVS characters, but who do I credit for the "I Love Lucy" characters? Can anybody please help me with this.

I know Desilu was brought out by Paramount in the 60s, so is it Paramount that owns the rights to "I Love Lucy"? I just need the info to ad to my disclaimer.

Any and all help will be appriciated.

*hugs helper in advance* ;)

Re: a question for my disclaimer

Postby Katharyn » Thu Apr 17, 2003 11:57 am

Rob Ty Ut. I can't tell you anything beyond Disulu being bought out which you know, but lets face it the disclaimers are not "legally" perfect right now anyway. They do what they need to which is to say that you make no claim on the characters and trademarks etc.

If you write a general disclaimer saying that you did not create the characters of I love Lucy and make no claim on the rights (and are making no money) then that should suffice as well as any other disclaimer hereabouts (like mine for example.) I mean half the time now the ME related ones are digs at Joss as much as they are anything else.

And why not?

Katharyn - *Idly wondering how much the rights to Star Trek were in the Disulu package.*

The Disclaimer Protocols

Postby CaptMurdock » Sat Apr 19, 2003 10:54 pm

Quote:
Katharyn - *Idly wondering how much the rights to Star Trek were in the Disulu package.*

In 1967, Charles Bluhdorn of Gulf + Western persuaded Lucille Ball to sell Desilu Productions (five years after she had bought out Desi Arnaz, her ex-hub) for $17 million. He also purchased Paramount Studio, which was right next door, and essentially combined the two lots into one big studio. Paramount (and by extension, Gulf + Western, and later Viacom when they bought Paramount years later) got the rights to all of Desilu's properties, including the various "Lucy" shows, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

So, I would put in your disclaimer that ILL is the property of Desilu/Paramount, just to be "safe." If they send you a cease-and-desist letter, frame it!

the 60's....and help

Postby mariacomet » Wed Apr 30, 2003 9:20 pm

Anyone have any idea what some words for 'cool' were in the 60's? For instance, what the equivalent of "I am the BOMB" would be?

mc... cool colloquialisms... depends when in the sixties you're talking about. late sixties i'd say: *bitchin'*, *radical*, *stellar*, *boss* means something is cool. *choice* as well. *far out* *funky* *groovy* *neat* *neato* *hip* i watched way too many *laugh in* reruns growing up.

Freeze-Frame, Anyone?

Postby Bagheera » Mon May 05, 2003 5:42 pm

Kittens:

To the best of my recollection, a sign saying "Welcome to Sunnydale" or something like that is seen at least twice in the show. Once, Spike flattens it with his car. My question is: what is the population of Sunnydale, as recorded on the sign?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help with this.

rer: sign... i dont think it has a population stmaped on it. if it did it'd only be crossed out various times with the dwindling of it. lol

I don't know, but I recall in his feedback to chapter 18 or 19 of The Dark Rose that Grimlock told me that my estimate of Sunnydale's population was a bit off because of the number on the sign.

The population is listed on the sign (both times) as 38,500, at least according to this site:

Hope that helps!

New Threads

Postby RedVampire » Wed May 14, 2003 8:04 pm

I'm still pretty new to the board and I haven't read all of this thread yet, (mostly cuz I'm just lazy and sleepy) but I wanted to know how to start a new thread. I wanted to post some fanfic that's been floatin' around in my head for months, but I am CLUELESS as to how I can do that. If I annoy anyone with this question, meaning that they've had to answer it a million other times, I'M SO SORRY.

I just wanted to know how to start a new thread. Thanks to anyone who helps me.:)

Peace out,

RedVampire :glasses

Archiving

Postby darkmagicwillow » Wed May 21, 2003 3:13 pm

With the end of Buffy, some archive sites are closing down including the W/T site Wiccan Ways which closes on June 1st, though they say they will move currently archived fics to another site. I'm curious as to what people know about the status of other archive sites. Oh, and how do you get the people at Extra Flamey to respond to your email? I like the whole automatic submission idea, but I've asked questions several times about it without receiving any answers.

Two points about the Wiccan Ways site

1: it has closed down now, though you can still access the stories for another week :sob

2: the stories aren't going to be moved to another site, since there are too many.

You've got til June 8th to download the stories you love. If you get more than a couple fics, grab a mirror tool from a place like Google's mirroring directory to get them without wearing out your clicking finger.

Btw, you can't find the fic from their home page any longer, but the index is still accessible.

Re: Personal Photo

Postby TexanZeppo256 » Thu Jun 05, 2003 11:59 pm

Umm... hi! Just a regular kitten in need of some help :kitty

I'm having some troubles with my personal photo: I've set the resolution of the photo to 60x60, but (as y'all can see) it keeps showing up as a 10x10 jpg instead. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Or has this problem been addressed previously in the thread and I just missed it? :confused

Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

The problem is that you're setting the personal icon field within the account preferences section, which is the wrong place.

In order to set your personal photo you need to go the edit profile section and fill in the 'my photo' box (make sure that you untick the private box)
