Big range of emotion this chapter, from Willow's confusion to Tara's sorrow, and finally to Willow again, feeling the music - she really gets into her songs, huh? :blush I really like Kara, too, she's a great original character.

jess, nice update, glad to see you got back to this. i'm glad tara revealed what she had overheard to kara, i was afraid she might sit on that, and glad kara happened upon her when tara needed her. cracked me up when willow referred to kara as the "perp", not exactly high crimes to watch someone buy water.
also like that even with all their friends stumbling around trying to hook them up, willow and tara run into each other all on their own. wish they would've interacted, though, hated to see tara run off like that, don't suppose you're going to get willow to run after her? but you're not going to get them together that quickly, are you?
kara's intentions almost had me feeling sorry for jack, but i got over it very quickly. looking forward to more of this ~ mary

Unlike Mary, a.k.a.meretricious I totally want to see Kara slug Jack. Slug away, I say! :-D

I would have never thought of Willow as a DJ mostly because I didn't picture her as having the personality. Yet you have created a believable character and a lovely story.

I am glad to see you're back. I look forward to reading more.

I was reading this on the old forum and when i saw it was incomplete I was all like "no way, it can't end like that..." So I desperately searched for a continuation... And it brought me here...

My, this story is sooo great! I was hooked right away (and look, now its 1 am and i still want more...)

Go Kara, show him what you got, that Jack guy deserves the beating!

Your style is so good. You depict will and tara so right I almost feel like... I am in there watching them... But in a kind of way it might be because Tara is my fave char, that Buffy always been my fave show, that W/T always looked so much like the best match to me, that anything written about them has to be great...

Keep up the good work, and hope to see an update soon :bounce

Chapter 8 feedback

Postby dragkinggoddess » Mon Aug 22, 2005 6:14 am

A mini-chapter will be along within a few hours. For now, feedback.

Marilda: I am glad you like it. Both the ladies have been so many different things, I figured why not Willow as a DJ. I am glad it is working. Expect more confusion. I can’t let it end easily can I?

Willow~Rosenberg: The hardest thing to do through this portion of the story is to keep the humor among the angst. The bathroom scene was what I came up with for this installment. The dance just sort of happened. I wanted it to be different than the usual dream sequence. I am glad you liked it. I am sure Willow won’t live it down easily.

The Rose24: Stay tuned for Jack-bashing.

Onlykaren: Glad you like the dance. That kind of stuff is the hardest to write so far. Can’t say how soon anything like that might happen again. You’ll just have to wait and see. ;)

Artemis: An emotional rollercoaster is what I was looking for, and hopefully that’s what I got. More on the way. I don’t know if that is a good hing or a bad thing.

Meretricious: Get them together so quickly? No way, I like torturing my readers :D. The connection between Willow and Tara in any story is strong enough to bring them together without much help. Eventually not even I will be able to keep them apart! Don’t feel sorry for Jack, he’s an ass.

Safuega: Thank you so much for saying my DJ-Willow is believable. That was one of my biggest worries originally. And stay tuned, I have plenty in store for that nasty Jack.

Krokador: I know what you mean. I rarely “don’t like” a story about Willow and Tara. It’s like getting to see more and more and better episodes involving them. I hope you keep reading!

Feedback- PLEASE!!!
Summary- To begin: Willow and Tara are students at Sunnydale U, but no slayers, vamps, hellmouth etc. Willow is a DJ for the University’s social events. Tara notices her from afar for a time before they meet.
Notes- This is my first shot at this. THANK YOU to my betas.

Chapter 9a-

She was a woman on a mission. Ok, she was a woman on a mission before too, but now she was on a new mission. One that would be fulfilled. One that would have much more tangible results.

When Kara walked away from Tara, leaving the despondent girl to her own devices, Kara had tried to look casual. She didn’t start stomping and balling her fists until after she rounded the corner of the building. The moment she was out of sight of her roommate her eyes shrank to slits, her posture bent, she leaned forward in a hurry to reach her destination. Her jaw clenched. She wouldn’t even have to touch Jack. Her stare was enough to burn a hole right through him at ten paces.

Since Tara had skipped out on class before it started, Kara knew she could still find Jack in his seat being an asshole for the next 30 minutes. She would just wait outside the classroom and…and what? What the hell AM I gonna do? She passed the outside entrance of the academic building, not able to enter the arena until the battle-plan was established. He is not going to get away with this. He will pay for hurting Tara, and he will pay for, well, being a big dumbass. She started pacing back and forth in front of the door trying to make her brain work.
***********************

Why am I running? Tara questioned herself, but did not stop. I’m running because I am an idiot. Such a train of thought was all too frequent for her. She had spent most of her life apologizing for her actions, her thoughts, her words. Things had gotten better over her years at Sunnydale, but a lingering self-doubt and, at times, blinding lack of self-confidence still head-butted its way into important situations.

I am running because I was wrong. Willow is obviously not the girl I thought she was. First the thing with that bastard Jack, and now this slutty little public show?

If she had been speaking the words aloud, no one would have been able to understand. Fighting back tears had caused her throat to seize. Heavy sobs threatened her ability to see, hear, and speak.

Why did I fall for her?

Tara knew the answer.

She stopped.

I fell for her because when I saw her for the first time, looked into those beautiful, deep, soulful green eyes for the first time, I knew. I knew she was the one. She has always been a part of me. I fell for her before I even met her.
**********************************

Kara still didn’t have a plan and the class was letting out. She was just about to turn and leave when she saw him.

Him.

Subconsciously, she must have had a plan because without any conscious thought she started moving towards him slowly, then with growing speed and anger. She returned to her previous state of rage within milliseconds.

“Fucking pig!” She screamed as her clenched fists slammed into his chest. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” She punched again.

Jack stumbled backwards, falling over his own feet and landing on his ass on the pavement. “What the - ? Who are you?”
Kara grimaced. “Who am I? You really are a pig. Do you even remember her name?” She kicked him back down each time he tried to get up. “You hurt my friend. That makes me want to hurt you.” Kara stopped suddenly as she noticed a crowd starting to form.

Once the kicking stopped, Jack was finally able to look up. “Kara. I just couldn’t see you. Wait, what the hell are you talking about?” He looked sincerely confused.

“I’m talking about you and Willow. Tara heard you bragging about banging her before class this morning. What kind of a slime ball does that?” Disregarding the spectators, saying Tara’s name re-ignited Kara’s fire and she started kicking Jack again.

Jack tried grabbing her leg and eventually succeeded. He pulled her down onto the ground next to him to stop the violence. He looked nervously about the crowd. He feigned a laugh, poorly, “Ok, Kara, Game over.” He tried to play off the scene in hopes that his classmates would disperse. Kara was stunned by her suddenly change of location. She didn’t immediately respond. Jack managed to wave the crowd away. They wandered off, quickly reabsorbed in their own lives. Within moments the two were alone. Jack rolled onto his knees, but his eyes remained on the ground. “I didn’t know anyone else heard me.”

“What? Now what are you talking about?” Kara sat up, brushing off her shirt. Once she looked up at him, she had the urge to punch again, so she did. This time her fist made contact with his jaw.

“STOP THAT!” Jack grabbed his face. “That hurt!”

“You want to know what hurt is? You should go talk to Tara.” Kara stood.

Jack followed. “I didn’t mean for anyone else to hear me this morning.” He rubbed his face a few more times, carefully considering Kara’s possible actions. “Why would Tara care who I screw? I thought she was gay?”

“She is, shit-for-brains. She doesn’t care about you, she cares about Willow. She might have been able to handle it if she hadn’t found out like that. Now she’s upset, and that makes me angry.” She let loose with yet another set of blows, this time to the top of his head.

Deciding the truth would cause the least pain, Jack deflated as he spoke. “Would you stop doing that if I told you it wasn’t true?!” He tried to speak so no one more than a foot away from them could hear.

Kara froze mid-swing. “What?”

No louder, Jack repeated. “It’s not true, it’s not true.” He was still guarding his head with his forearms.

“It’s not true?” Once the statement sunk in, Kara began to laugh uncontrollably. “It’s not true!” She laughed again a moment, and then changed 180 degrees, raining down blows on Jack’s head. “What do you mean it’s not true! What kind of an asshole lies like that?”

Suddenly, Kara got an idea about delivering a different kind of blow to the man. She stopped and spoke more quietly, but none the less firmly. “Say it. Say it out loud so everyone can hear you.” She shoved him to turn around towards the milling student body.

Jack turned back against her pushing. “What? Say what? I’ve had about enough of your craziness, bitch.”

“Bitch? Bitch? You are going to pay for that mister, and for lying about Willow.” Knowing that Jack was only expecting her hands to connect with his upper extremities, she knew she would catch him off guard with a lower aim. She reached down and grabbed him three inches below the belt and hung on for dear life. “Say it or I’ll start twisting.”

Jack did not doubt her. The look in her eyes told him that doubting her could cause him the worst pain imaginable. “You are even crazier than I thought!”

Kara started a clock-wise turn of her fist.

“OK, OK!” Jack grabbed her wrist in hopes of staving off any accidental movement as well. From behind a clenched jaw, Jack muttered. “I lied, I didn’t screw Willow.”

“Louder, so everyone out here can hear you!” Kara was not going to let him get away easily.

Jack hesitated but was encouraged to speak by a slight tightening of her grip. He squeaked, “I DID NOT SLEEP WITH WILLOW ROSENBERG!”

Kara smiled. “There, that’s better.” She stared at Jack’s face. She wanted to remember the look on his face for another time when she needed a little cheering up. Once she was sure it was etched in her memory, she let go. “Now, go away. I never want to see you near me or any of my friends ever again.”

Jack nodded, turned, and limped away mumbling to himself.

Kara brushed her hands together in a “job well done” gesture. Yes, much better. She was quite pleased with herself. Her mission to find more out about Willow first-hand had not succeeded, but this unexpected turn was even better. Oh! She had almost forgotten why she was out in the first place. I have to go tell Tara!
TBC...

Okay, I so did not expect Tara to react that way to Willow's dance. I thought that she would be fascinated and a bit turned on, but instead she was all with the jumping to conclusions. I am going to chuck Tara's erroneous assumption to her insecurities and the pain she is feeling because she thinks the girl of her dreams is out of her reach. Otherwise, I would have to tsk at Tara for assuming that Willow is a slut because of her public dance. I know that Jack's bragging has prompted this train of thought, but still I'd like to think about Tara as being more open minded and trying to find out more about Willow before deciding that the girl is a slut. Heck, talking to Willow and getting to know her personally would not hurt either. I am trusting Kara to find Tara and clear up this misunderstanding and to pave the way for these two damsels in distress to find each other.

Great update. Kara on a mission was too funny. The mission itself was also a riot. :lol

Thanks for sharing. I look forward to more.

Poor Tara, mistaking Willow's dance for something voluntary... if only she knew what was going through Willow's head just then :blush

And as for the cause of her mistaken assumption, go Kara! :party Jack had that coming. And y'know, Kara's cute when she's butch :x

Hmmm...
Well, I'm not a big fan of violence even if someone (Jack) is in the wrong but it's nice that Tara has such an amazingly devoted friend. I mean Kara's willing to beat some guy up because he said something so foul about someone Tara likes? That's dedication.

I'm interested to see where this goes next. Of course there seems to be a lot of things standing in the way of the very simple fact that Willow likes Tara and Tara likes Willow.

Sorry, not an update folks. I need to settle a little into my semester, but I promise the next chapter is in production right now.

I just wanted to answer your question Irene73...

I was a DJ in undergrad, but not the cool kind. I was the loser kind who really did just pop in CD's. I was interested in learning the other stuff, but it wouldn't have been very popular at my small Catholic University. I am really into music though.

Glad everyone enjoyed the last two installments. I won't keep you waiting too long.

OK, I so lied.

I had abandoned the story, truth be told.

I got caught up in my screenplay, which by the way features two very W&T-like characters but veiled enough never to get me in any trouble, and had just moved on.

Something last week made me think of starting up again. Maybe it is the cold cold weather setting in, or maybe it was the very kind note I received from a reader today. Either way, I am firmly, 100% promising a new chapter by the end of the week.
I would like to request some help from those of you who were attentively reading The Right Mix. If you have a moment, shoot me a message, or a reply right here with your thoughts on the following:

1. since I love a little ego boost, what do you like best about the story so far?

2. Because my ego also needs to be kept in check, what is your least favorite part so far? What, if anything, rubbed you the wrong way (stop that) or just didn't seem to fit in?

3. What do you hope happens (in other words, given a predictable course of plot, what are you looking forward to in this story?)

4. Also given a fairly predictable course of events, what do you forsee that might happen that you are dreading or hope you DON'T see?

5.. WHich characters do you think I have captured well?

6. WHich seem less like "themselves"?

I would appreciate your feedback.

1. Right now I love the anticipation of how Tara will feel when she realizes that Willow's embarassing sexy dance was for her. You've done a good job in general, keeping good grammar, keeing the characters pretty true to the originals, and keeping up and interesting storyline.

2. You need to write more. :happy

3. I'm looking forward to Willow and Tara getting together! What else?

4. I'm hoping there won't be too much angst.

5. Willow and Tara were captured pretty well.

6. Buffy's a little different, but it's no big.

Alright, alright, I know. This time I have a good excuse though. Chapter 9b or whatever is in progress, but right now I am dealing with the news that my parents are getting divorced after 33 years of marriage. It doesn't exactly put me in the mood to write lovey-dovey willow and tara stuff.

WHen I am ina bit lighter of a mood I will finish up, I promise.

Chapter 9b
Good intentions of Course

“Tara!” Willow crashed through the studio door, knocking the security guard into the wall. Jumping out into the crowd, she lost sight of her. It was only when
Tara was out of her field of vision that Willow even became aware of the swarm around her.
Holy moly! They all saw that, didn’t they? Willow threw her hands up over her face as her skin grew crimson with embarrassment and fear. Not even her DJ alter-ego could handle this. She ran through the crowd, parting the spectators with her elbows.
*****
“Wait, you have to stop hyperventilating for me to understand a single word you’re babbling.” Buffy had only managed to turn partway around to face her roommate after the whirling dervish had blown through their door and landed on her unmade bed. “Did you just say ‘you’re a silly meany wearing ugly pants’?”

That was almost enough to quell Willow’s frenzy, but not quite. What ensued was a strange combination of hysteria and hilarium, resulting in Willow snorting between sobs. She tried to calm herself to get the words out a little more clearly.

“I said Tara saw me doing a dance.”

“OK, not any better Will, still have no idea what you’re talking about.” Buffy finished her turn and approached Willow’s bedside. She knelt beside her crying friend and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. The contact had an immediate effect, like petting a whimpering puppy. Buffy knew this was bad. Willow was not known to be this emotional. Most of her brain space was reserved for logic and reason. “I think maybe you’re overtired Will. Maybe you should try to take a nap before processing this one?”

Buffy really did want to know what the emergency was, but she also really thought her prescription was necessary. Willow hadn’t gotten much sleep since the mixer Friday night, and as a result, neither had Buffy. She knew how her best friend’s mind worked, namely tirelessly. Perhaps it had finally reached the point of exhaustion trying to decipher the whole “I’m a lesbian and crushing on Tara” thing.

“How can I sleep right now Buffy? The world is ending!” Willow turned her face ever so slightly to allow the words to escape from under her, but then reeled it back in, stifling further sobs.

Given Willow’s penchant for science combined with Buffy’s own exhaustion, she was inclined to believe any Chicken Little tale her intellectual friend could conjure. It took her a moment to accept this out-of-character irrationality as just that. “Willow, what happened?”

In one frantic, sweeping movement, Willow sat up, brushed Buffy’s hand from her shoulder and began blurting. “I was in the studio mixing, and I don’t know what happened to me. I closed my eyes to blink, but they wouldn’t open again, and the next thing I know, Tara was there with me, hands all-in-new-places, and well, you know…”

Willow looked over at Buffy. Over the course of those few short sentences, Buffy’s jaw had dropped to a low that left Willow wondering if maybe it had come unhinged.

The unthinkable had happened. Buffy was temporarily at a loss for words. The room was silent. Slowly, her look of shock morphed into one of confusion. Once the transformation was complete, her vocal chords restored function.

“Huh? What? Tara was in the studio with you? And touching you?” Nothing further was registering. “Wow, that’s a, well, a little fast don’tcha think?”

Realizing the misunderstanding with a huff of frustration, then a shudder of embarrassment, Willow squeaked.

“NO! Tara didn’t do that. I imagined it, but my hands decided to act out the whole thing.” The tears began to flow again with the recollection. “Everyone saw me, including Tara.”

“Oh,” was all Buffy could think to say. Her brow wrinkled. The two sat in near silence for a few minutes with Willow’s fading sobs the only sound in the room.

Once she stopped crying, leaving the room completely silent, Willow interrupted it, this time with words. “ ‘Oh, Willow, it’s not that bad’ would be a great thing to say right now. Even if it’s not really true.” She raised her eyebrows questioningly.

Buffy reacted on impulse. “Right. Of course. It’s not that bad Will.” She immediately doubted her words. “Is it?”
*****
A similarly disheartening conversation had taken place in a dorm room across campus the same day. Kara had blasted into her shared space to find her roommate sobbing face down on her bed. She felt her stomach drop. For four years, the two girls had formed a friendship so strong, shared emotions had become shared physical experience of those emotions. Kara felt tears welling up in her eyes just knowing Tara was upset. It didn’t matter why.

Her first emotion was panic. This was something bad. Tara wasn’t just a little misty at her desk, or weepy sitting up reading. The girl was shaking and slowly rocking, her favorite teddy bear a victim of the lack of space between Tara’s body and her comforter. Even with her face pressed into her pillow, Kara could hear the desperate sobs from across the room.

Abandoning her purse, backpack, and travel mug on the floor where she had entered, Kara flew over to Tara’s bedside, immediately placing her hand gently on the Tara’s upper back. She didn’t want to startle her, but Kara wanted Tara to know that she was not alone, physically or mentally through whatever this was.

“Oh honey, what’s wrong?”

Tara stiffened slightly at the contact, then melted back into her bed. God I’m being so stupid. I had hoped I would calm down before she got home. Just thinking about having to tell Kara what happened renewed the saline assault on her pillow.

All she could respond with was a nod of her head. No.

“Wow, Tara, you need to tell me. You’re making me all nervous.” That was the truth too. Kara couldn’t think of a time she had seen her friend so upset. “Whatever it is, you can tell me.” Kara was feeling worse by the second. If this went on much longer, She was going to need comforting too. She slid onto the bed and started rubbing Tara’s back, hoping to calm the tidal wave.

A few sniffles later, Tara managed one word. “W-willow.”

Kara stopped rubbing. “Willow? Did you say Willow?”

Again, a nod was the only reply.

“What about Willow, hun?”

All at once, it came out. The whole sordid scene.

“…a-nd the w-worst part was...” More sniffles, ones that threatened to tumble into more sobs. “J-jack.”

“Jack?” Kara wasn’t really following the story. She understood what had happened, but not why Tara was so upset.

“It was for Jack. The whole th-thing. He was at the front of the crowd. She obviously really likes him. If s-sleeping with him d-didn’t prove it, this d-did.”

Tumble, sob.

Kara started rubbing again, fighting off tears herself. Ok, it is that bad. You’re finally interested in a girl and she’s off sleeping with…thought became excited words.

“Wait! Tara! I forgot to tell you!” Kara leapt off the bed.

Tara was startled. The sobs stopped, but so did her breathing. She turned her head and glared at the odd behavior of her roommate.

“She didn’t do it!” Kara was nearly jumping up and down in the center of their room.

Tara breathed again in the form of a heavy sigh. “No, she really did. I w-was there. I s-saw the whole th-thing.” She started sitting up, not relinquishing her death grip on the bear.

Kara laughed, “No, not that silly. Willow didn’t sleep with Jack!” She punctuated the statement with a clap.

Seeing that Tara wasn’t believing her, she continued. “I saw Jack outside, I kicked him a little, ok, a lot, but that doesn’t matter. Well, it does matter, cuz man it was fun, but… “

Tara seemed to be moving from upset to angry at Kara’s seemingly inappropriate joy. “What are you saying Kara?”

Kara tried to remain calm. She was excited to be delivering good news after all the crying. “I am saying that Jack admitted he was lying.”

“L-lying?” A few more lingering sniffles ensued while the information soaked in. “Huh.”

“Huh? Not huh! Yay! Right? I mean, that’s what you wanted to hear isn’t it?” Now Kara was confused. This was supposed to be good news.

Tears started to flow again. This time silently.

“Oh god, what now Tara?” Kara flopped back down on the bed.

“She s-stil l-likes him though. The d-dance.” Tara refrained from taking up her previous prone position in favor of a sitting collapse into herself, and the bear.

“Oh, that.” Kara’s hopes were dashed now too. “Well, there’s still that I guess.”

The two girls sat in silence for a few minutes. Kara knew she had to say something. What though? “I don’t know what to say Tara. I wish I did.”
*****

Days passed.

To say Willow wasn’t herself would have been an understatement. It was as if there was no Willow at all. She didn’t want to talk to Buffy about anything let alone Tara, “the incident” or coming out. If Buffy did try to bring any of those topics up, Willow would either ignore her, or completely deflate with a simple, “Please no, Buffy.”

It pained Buffy to see her best friend like this. It was a new and unwelcome experience.

She wanted to do something. She had to do something.
Alone in their room, after Willow made a now characteristic silent exit to, well who knows where, Buffy decided it was time.

Not knowing what to do to help her friend, Buffy tried to think of who she could consult on the matter. Nothing like this had ever come up before. In fact, Willow was the one she went to for advice, or to talk through a sticky situation. The two girls depended on each other for everything. That fact, and the feeling of emptiness now created by Willow’s mental absence, bubbled with an urgency Buffy was beginning to fear would not go away with time. She had to find someone else to talk to.

No one I know can help me with this. Can they? I had no idea Will was gay, maybe more of my friends are? Am I really that clueless? Buffy was thinking harder than possibly ever before. I might need outside assistance here. Looking around the room as if, once again, the answer lie in some inanimate object, her eyes settled on Willow’s laptop. She really is out of her mind right now. I don’t think she’s ever left this room without that thing. A light bulb flashed over Buffy’s head. That’s it!
*********

“Time to go Tar.” Kara hoped the cheer in her voice wasn’t too transparent. It was getting harder and harder to act chipper around Tara everyday. The girl hadn’t so much as smiled in nearly a week.

Tara didn’t even look up. “Kara, I just can’t do it tonight. I’ve got so much work to do.”

Kara sighed. She had expected the response. It was the same one she received every time she asked her roommate to leave the room with her. No amount of coaxing could get the girl out from within those same four walls for anything other than class or the occasional meal.

The last part was worrying her most. Not being social wasn’t a completely new behavior, but Tara wasn’t eating or sleeping much at all. Just that morning, after her forlorn friend turned down a quick bite before her morning class, Kara had inquired as to the time of Tara’s last meal. Tara just shrugged, giving some vague statement about having had something at some point the day before.

It had gotten so bad, that at this point, Kara wasn’t sure if the bags under Tara’s eyes were from lack of sleep or lack of nourishment.

“You want some company? I could stay home and we could order a pizza or go over to the café, or something.” She was sure to sound as nonchalant as possible. If she let on even a little about how important the meeting was, there was no way Tara would let her stay behind. Apparently she wasn’t successful.

“You n-need to g-go.” Still not making eye contact, “A-at least o-ne of us n-needs to be there.”

“Blah! I know, I know. President and all.” She exhaled heavily, causing her hair to blow a bit around her face.

“Are you sure you’ll be ok? I could just call Jeffrey…”

“I-I’m sure Kara. I’ll go grab something out of the vending machine in the lobby later.” She sniffled and tried to look “ok”. She knew it wasn’t working, but she was trying as hard as she could. She had been on the verge of tears all week. Anytime Kara sounded too concerned, which was nearly every time she spoke, the waterworks started.

Kara turned and walked over to her roommate slowly, careful not to startle her. Slowly bending down over a seated Tara, she reached across with both arms and surrounded her in a big bear hug. She knew staying really wouldn’t do any good. Nothing she could say would make it better. If Tara wanted to be alone, then she would respect that.

Kara stood, not breaking their physical connection. She ruffled the top of Tara’s already tousled hair. “I’ll go, but if you need me, just call my cell and I’ll come running, ok?”
Receiving a semi-convincing nod from Tara, she walked to the door and opened it. Turning to take another look at the broken girl, Kara sighed heavily and finally closed the door, knowing there was nothing more she could do right now.
****
With great difficulty, Buffy had located a listing of campus clubs and organizations on the Internet. After getting a handle on just using an Internet browser without her favorite computer-geek to assist her, she stumbled across two groups she thought might be helpful. The first was the LGBTA- Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgendered Association.

That would obviously be a good place for Willow to go to meet girls. But that’s not what I’m looking for. I’m the one who needs help right now. Help with the helping. Yup, that’s what I need.

From a link on the LGBTA page, Buffy discovered PFLAG. After reading up on the group, she liked it for two reasons. First, they might be able to give her the support she needed, and Second, her sexuality was less likely to come into question at a group for friends. As supportive as Buffy was trying to be to her best friend, there was still a layer of discomfort that existed within her. It was something she needed to work on, she knew, but right now, Willow was more important.

Oh goody, they’re meeting today. Buffy checked her watch. Oh, make that right now!

*****
“Ok, so the date is set, now we need to figure out everything else.” Jeffrey stressed the lack of progress the group was making. He looked around the room. Mostly Freshmen and Sophomores this year. They were always a little harder to motivate, and even harder to get to take on responsibilities. It seemed that these younger students were much more interested in partying through the ball than working towards it or during it. Not that the organizers didn’t have the chance to enjoy the event, but it was essential that they be present and in good condition during setup and cleanup. Drunk was not a useful condition for this, and that was the condition Jeffrey figured they wanted to be in.

He sighed. “Alright, let’s form some committees. Maybe that will get us going?” Usually undyingly chipper and bouncy, the “Head Fag” as he liked to call himself was having a hard time staying enthusiastic about the event.

The PFLAG Drag Ball had been the group’s major event for more than 10 years. It had started as a small party with the intention of drumming up new membership and visibility, but over the years had grown to a major fundraising event, with a different GLBT related organization benefiting from each. Besides being for a good cause, the Ball was a blast. Gay, Straight, or otherwise, everyone loved dressing up for the event.

“I move for a bathroom break first.” Kara was all in favor of the committee forming, but needed a few minutes to regroup with her co-president. She knew the mood of the group was changing, but had not anticipated such a lackluster response to the planning. She flashed Jeffrey what she hoped would be a “we need to talk” look.

“Give everyone a few minutes to think about what committee they might want to be on.” She turned back to the group after a knowing nod from Jeffrey Kara was trying to compensate for Jeffrey’s pessimism. . “Ok, folks, 15 minutes, and then the fun will start.”

****
“I hate this part.” Willow had been less than enthusiastic about everything lately; classes, studying, hanging out with Buffy, breathing, but even on a good day, Willow really did hate this part of her job.

Chin in hands, DJ Red glared through the glass partition into the studio where three freshman boys Beavis-and-Buttheaded their way through snide remarks about who had a better ass, Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera.

Isn’t this topic a little old? Willow rolled her eyes and adjusted her headphones. She was there technically as the “producer” of the amateur show, but she and the other upperclassmen knew it was more of a babysitting job. DJ Red did not have her own show on the station, nor was she an officer of the radio club, but she traded the work for the use of the mixing equipment. Yeah, like I’ll ever be doing that again. That was where her life as she knew it had ended. I will never stand in front of that window again.

Willow’s mind wandered back to that day. What came over me? She really didn’t have to ask the question. She knew exactly what had come over her. Tara. She makes me feel things I’ve never felt before. Naughty things. Obviously cuz, hello, never danced like that thinking about any boy. She closed her eyes and tried to conjure the images again. Just as the picture was tuning in her mind, another part of her subconscious stepped in, uninvited. STOP! No! Those thoughts are what got you in trouble. You have to stop. You scared off the girl you love. If you stop now, at least maybe you won’t freak out the rest of the world while you’re at it. Before she could reason with herself and prevent acceptance of such a resolution to not think of Tara anymore, a horrific noise ripped through her headphones.

“BBBBUUUURRRRPPPP!”

“EW!” It was the freshmen. Apparently without Willow’s watchful eye and ears trained on them, the pair had rapidly descended into juvenile bodily function humor. Certainly they had come without a script and were not capable of thinking on the spot. Or maybe of thought at all. Willow rolled her eyes before pressing the intercom button to intervene. “Uh, guys, ya think maybe you could play some music?”

Ugh She thought, maybe out loud. Still another half-hour of this crap.

She studied the fumbling boys on the other side of the glass and considered them as representatives of “the alternative”. That’s It. She resolved. I’m becoming a nun. A Jewish nun!

***
Shortly after Kara left, Tara reconsidered her decision to be alone, and regretted the move. I can’t call Kara. She would come running like she said, but they need her there. Tara picked up the phone and dialed.

She wasn’t Kara, but she was a decent substitute. Tara’s conversation with Lynn had gone much more smoothly and calmly than the one she had with Kara just a little while ago. Lynn didn’t have much to add either.

“Tar, look. I still stand by the Bi theory. My gaydar is never wrong. She’s just unavailable is all.” Lynn winced. “That didn’t help did it.”

Tara laughed a little. “No, not really. But you’re right. I got my hopes up for no apparent reason. I mean, Willow never gave me any reason to think she was interested in me. She was just being friendly is all.”

Lynn thought back to that day in the café. She had watched the whole exchange. “If I had been in your shoes, I would have thought Willow was flirting too.”

Tara genuinely laughed this time. “Lynn, you think everyone is flirting with you.”
“Well, they are!” Lynn acted shocked that Tara would even question the idea. She couldn’t help but laugh at herself too.

“We aren’t talking about me here, Tara. We’re talking about you and Willow.” Lynn’s voice was firm, but radiated a clear sense of caring and concern.

“Correction.” Tara’s voice was more firm. “We are talking about me NOT talking, or even thinking about Willow anymore.”

“Oh Tara, are you sure that’s what you want to do?”

“I-I’m sure.”

The firmness was gone.

***
If she had more time, she would have gone through her usual process of event planning to attend the PFLAG meeting. Given that by the time she learned of the groups existence, she was already 10 minutes late, Buffy skipped outfit contemplation and makeup adjustment and made a quick exit from her dorm.

She found the meeting room easily enough. After four years, there didn’t seem to be a corner of the campus she hadn’t memorized. The group met in one of the smaller theaters in the Arts building. Must be a pretty big group. As she reached the door to the theater, she stopped short. What am I going to say exactly?

Not being able to come up with a good game plan, she decided to go in with no plans of saying anything at all. I’ll just go in and listen. Yeah, that might work.

She raised her hand to push the swinging door open, but was beaten to it by someone on the other side. “OH!” Buffy jumped back from the doorway. Two guys she knew from her psych class filed out and headed towards the bathroom across the hall without even acknowledging her.

Oh great! She let her arm flop to her side in resignation. [i]I missed it[i.

Buffy’s exclamation drew both Jeffrey’s and Kara’s attention to the entrance.

“Who’s that?” Jeffrey jumped up and assumed a defensive stance. “Oh great, we’ve got crashers now?”

While he did have good reason to be cautious these days, Kara was pretty sure he was overreacting. She craned her neck to get a better look. As the door swung open again from the force of those leaving, Kara saw the interloper clearly. “What the hell is she doing here?” She hadn’t really meant to say it out loud.

“Who is she?” Jeffrey abandoned his fighting stance for rubber necking with interest.

“She’s a man-stealer.” Kara stomped towards the door.

Hey, wow an update? What a surprise. Well the angst is heartbreaking although Tara is definitely making some dumb assumptions. Willow is just embarrassed beyond belief which I can understand.

Now I hope that Buffy & Kara work something out. Please keep updating.

Oh!!! You found your way back to this story! You made me so happy. I had nearly given up. I wish Buffy would have called Tara instead of going to the meeting... but I guess she'll talk to Kara. Can't wait for more... soon i hope!

Yay! Update-y goodness.

And wow, what an update! I am so happy that you came back to this story. I feel bad for both our girls. Boy, do they have their wires crossed. I just hope the whole Kara.Buffy confrontation doesn't cause Buffy to lose her focus about getting Willow help. That would actually be fabulous since Kara could pass on the info to Buffy that Tara likes Willow and vice versa. Now I'm anxiously awaiting for more.

FEEDBACK!

Postby dragkinggoddess » Sat Mar 04, 2006 8:59 am

I didn't forget you all, just a little delayed as I was hell bent on getting the update out.

Krokador-Thanks for the big compliments! I agree, Jack did deserve that, even if it wasn’t an unheard of incident. Just a little vengeance and Justice to all who have been in a similar situation. Now only if this were real…

Starcat- extreme? You can decide, but Obviously not irreversible. Thanks for reading!

Willow~Rosenberg- Yes, Tara did believe Kara, but that didn’t solve the rest of Tara’s problems with Willow. We’ll see how many more situations they can get into before I let everyone smile.

The Rose 24- I really like Kara. I have had a lot of fun writing her. She just keeps getting better too! Just wait for the next chapter.

Arielle- Well, very belated happy birthday. Unfortunately, I think it might be a long while before Tara knows of Willow’s inspiration.

Onlykaren- Yes, he did deserve that. Sorry, no resolution in the near future. Hehe, gotta keep ya reading!

Safuega- Well, just as you think one thing is resolved, another obstacle jumps in the way! We all act silly and irrational in the forays of love sometimes. I think it does have to do with Tara’s insecurities, and also with acting, or thinking without all the information. I know I have done similar things with girls I have crushed on. As I said above, I really like Kara too, and Lynn. I have as much if not more fun writing the original characters as I have our beloved W & T! I am glad you like them.

Artemis- LOL! Kara’s an amazing best friend isn’t she? It’s good that Tara has someone looking out for her. She’s a tough girl, but can use the help at times.

Graceland- I am not a big fan of violence either, but in such a situation, I’d probably accept anything short of death for Jack. I hope he doesn’t pop up anymore, but who knows. I like writing our girls much better!

Irene73- I love the Lucy and Ethel comparison. That is a perfect way to describe how I think of them. I am glad it is coming through the way I pictured it. I like them a lot too. We all have vivid characters in our lives, I know I do. I think Kara might be at a loss now that she is confronted with the Willow dancing thing, but we’ll see if she can come through for her best friend again, and again, and again…

As for your question- I was a DJ in Undergrad (oh so many years ago) but only the lame kind who just popped in CDs. Not much call for the cool kind at my little Catholic University. I do love music though. I have luckily been able to find the perfect songs for this fic all on my ipod. Alright, not lucky since I have 1500 songs on there now. Always bound to be one for every occasion.

Fleiss- Thanks for reading. I hope the new chapters are also to your liking!

I am working on the next chapter right now. Hoepe to get it done very very soon!

Yea an update! Seems like everyone decided to overreact to everything. It turned a somewhat embarassing event into a calamity. That's too bad. Hopefully they'll sort it out soon. Someday they'll all laugh about "the dance." I am anxious to find out how they finally start sorting it all out. Quite the mess they've made. Can't wait for the next update!

Feedback

Postby dragkinggoddess » Mon Mar 06, 2006 5:45 am

Thank you all so much for your patience, and now willingness to come back for more. My muse has apparently returned full-time. I hope to keep cranking out updates like this for a long time!

JustSkipIt- Ah, angst! It is indeed stressful, but often makes the good stuff even better. I wish I could say it would end soon, but alas, I must keep you interested somehow…Thank you for reading. Being a big BIG fan of your writing, it means a great deal to me! I know it seems like this whole thing is an issue of overreactions, or over emotional involvement, but I don’t necessarily think it is completely out of the realm of possibility. Love makes us act pretty crazy it does.

Willowrulez- Yes, I found my way back. I got a series of bad directions, then there was the unfortunate incident with the…oh, I mean Yay! I’m back, and it feels very good to be writing again. I really had no idea where I was going with this for a while, but I think I am definitely on track now. Hope you keep reading!

k-prime- I will try not to give up anytime soon. So glad you like it. Thaks for reading!

Willow~RosenberNot so fast young lady! If Buffy and Kara could untangle all the wires right away, what would be left? I do think it is going to be fun to watch the two sidekicks try though. Kara is super fun to write.

Tarebear- Good news: another update already! Bad news: No end to the saga in sight. Or is that more good news? I am glad everyone was looking as forward to the Buffy Kara confrontation as I was. I could have dragged it out, made them conflict more, but I really wanted to get down to business. Hope it works for ya!

Guppy- Someday, when They are all old and gray, they just might laugh about the dance. That day, sadly is not today. But I do think progress can soon be made, or at least started? Ah, another update to amuse and bewilder follows right now...
