Here's an update. It's a little short, but I hope you like it anyway. :-D

Thanks to Carleen for Beta'ing and for staying away from all the pretty colors. :lol

************************************************************************
Willow sat up in bed. She was breathing heavily and finding it hard to catch her breath. Willow could feel her heart fluttering in her chest and the sensation was making her a little light-headed. Willow felt the need to hang onto something, so she twisted her fingers into the bed sheets as she rode out the unpleasant sensation until it suddenly subsided as quickly as it had come. Willow sat there, wondering what the frilly-heck had just happened. She'd never experienced anything like that before in her life. Willow decided then that she would go to the doctor tomorrow on her lunch break. She wouldn't tell Tara though, it was probably nothing and she didn't want to worry her wife unnecessarily. Willow tried to keep her breathing even, afraid that the fluttering would begin again if she didn't remain completely calm. She lay back on the pillow but didn't close her eyes; instead she listened to Tara's even breathing and focused on the edge of the curtain where it rubbed against the beige wallpaper.
************************************************************************

"Hi there."

"Hi" Samantha's voice was small. She looked up, squinting at the older woman that sat down next to her on the stone bench. Samantha didn't know how she had gotten where she was. She couldn't remember getting out of her bed.

"Do you remember me?"

Samantha nodded, even though she didn't really remember the woman. She thought she might know her, but the more she thought about it the surer she was that she didn't know the woman next to her.

"Come now...you can't tell fibs here, this is a special place."

Samantha shook her head, correcting her earlier agreement.

"You gave this away once. I want you to have it back. "

Samantha examined the floating ball of purple light in the woman's hand but made no move to take it from her. Samantha wasn't sure if she was supposed to be in the garden with this woman or not, since she couldn't remember how she'd gotten there but she did know for certain that she wasn't supposed to take things from strangers.

"Take it...It's okay."

There was something in the woman's voice though that made Samantha want to do what she asked so she took the shimmering light from the woman and watched as it seemed to melt into her palm and disappear through her skin. Samantha felt a tingle that traveled from her hand, up her arm, all the way to her to her toes where it stayed for a moment. Samantha wanted to take her shoes off and scratch where the tingling itched the bottoms of her feet, but before she could do that the tingle was traveling through her body again. This time it seemed to stop behind her eyes. Samantha blinked, but felt nothing.

When Samantha woke up that morning she remembered nothing of the previous night, though she felt like she was different somehow, changed but she didn't know how or why. She didn't feel like anything unusual happened, but she somehow felt that the unusual had occurred none-the-less. As she slipped out of bed and padded down the hall to her parents room she though about the kinds of things that would be different now. She wondered if she looked as different on the outside as she felt on the inside.

Samantha stopped in the hall and stood before her reflection. She looked the same as she did everyday. Samantha took in the sight of her pajama's and as she looked at herself the realization that her pajamas were not of the matching variety hit her with such a suddenness that she almost had to giggle. Sam decided she didn't care about the state of her attire; she liked them that way, so that was the way they would stay. Samantha's eyes moved next over her shoulder length hair. She remembered the day it had been cut. She hadn't wanted to cut her hair that day, because it had been so long and curly, and she liked it, but she had gone along with the hair cut anyway because her mommy had been so excited about it. Samantha was used to her hair now though, so it didn't seem like such a big deal anymore.

Samantha lifted her fingers to the small silver studs in her ears. She traced their texture with the tips of her finger, liking the way it felt to go from the soft texture of her ears to the foreign texture of the earrings. The feel of the smooth metal under her fingertips reminded her of the way river rocks felt when she put her hands in the current. She loved the way the water would rush over her hands while her fingers skimmed along the hard surface of the smoothed rocks. Was she taller? Was she smarter? Sam didn't know how to answer any of those questions, as she had nothing with which to compare her previous height or intellect. Still she felt different and didn't know why.

Samantha turned away from the mirror to resume her path down the hallway. The door to her parents' room was slightly ajar. She could feel the cool grained texture of the door as she pushed, palm flat against its surface. Her parents were still asleep. Samantha stood next to the bed and watched them for a long moment. She could feel her hands resting against her body. They didn't move. Were her parents different now, too? Would they know that something had happened to her? Samantha didn't know the answer to these questions either. She stuck her thumb in her mouth, but pulled it out when it failed to comfort her in the way it always had. She tucked the wet digit into her palm, closing her fingers around it to form a fist.

She watched her Mommy's chest. It moved up and down as she breathed. Samantha began to cry. She couldn't help it, she didn't want to be different; she wanted to be the same as she had always been. Samantha stood there crying silently until an audible sob escaped from her lungs.

Her Mommy was awake and next to her in an instant. "I had a bad dream," Samantha cried into Willow's shirt. She hadn't meant to wake her up, but she was glad that her Mommy was holding her tightly. Samantha pressed her face into her Mommy's pajama top, her tears wet against the fabric of the shirt. She didn't know why she lied about the bad dream. She wished she hadn't lied, which made her cry harder.

*************************************
"Mommy. " Samantha said, as she put her backpack on. When she received no answer she tugged on the back of her mommy's shirt. "Mommy." Samantha said persistently.

"What baby?" Willow bent down, readjusting the little girl's backpack on her shoulders.

"I need my homework." Samantha wiped the back of her hand across her nose.

"I didn't know preschool babies got homework." Dresden said, sipping the remaining juice from the blue plastic cup in his hand. "Where's Mama?" He asked, unconvinced in his other parent's ability to chauffeur he and his sister to school.

Willow sighed and put a smile that she didn't really feel on her face. She didn't want to admit it to herself but she was afraid of what the doctor might tell her today. She was being silly, she told herself; there was nothing wrong with her. There was no reason she should think that there was anything seriously wrong with her after all, her mother was healthy and so was her father. And there was no history of heart conditions in her family. Willow felt slightly better that she had been able to convince herself into a healthy state again. Willow brought her eyes to Dresden. He was watching her suspiciously.

"That's it. I'm walking. "

"Dres...let's not do this this morning. Go get your coat. " Willow was relieved when he went to get his coat without a fight.

"I wanna go with you today Mommy, cause you never take us. "

Her daughter was speaking to her softly and sweetly. The little girl had placed her hands on either side of Willow's face. "Thank you baby." Willow kissed Sam on the nose before standing up.

"Where did Mama go?"

"She went with grandma Rosenberg to look at a house," Willow said, scooping up Dresden's breakfast dishes, and placing them in the sink.

"Our new house?"

Willow smiled at her daughter's excitement; she knew Samantha had been wondering when she was going to be able to move her toys into her new room. "No baby. Not the new house."

Samantha tilted her head to the side as she processed the other options. "Is grandma going to buy a house to live in?"

"I think so." Willow smiled. "What do you think about that? Wouldn't you like to see grandma and grandpa more often?"

Samantha nodded carefully. She would like to see her grandfather everyday, but she really didn't care if she saw Sheila anymore. "When are we going to move to our new house Mommy?"

"Soon baby." Willow handed the little girl her lunch box.

Dresden came back into the kitchen carrying a small, green sprout, planted in about three inches of dirt, and sticking out of a small paper cup. "Here Sam. I saw this upstairs and I thought it looked like baby homework."

"It's not baby homework!" Samantha said loudly and snatched the cup out of her brother's hand. "It's my sprout." She crooned proudly into the cup. The tiny green plant quivered under the breathed words and she ran her finger lightly along one of the tender green leaves.

Willow pointed toward the back door. "Go." She said to her eldest child.

Okay, what the "frilly-heck" indeed is going on with Willow? That episode with her heart does not sound good. I'm hoping :pray that it might have something to do with Sam getting her powers back. Sam's stop at the mirror to see if she was any different was cute. Hmmm... could something wicked be coming that would cause Sam to get her powers back when she is still so young?
Take care Emms,

Hey sweetie :wave

Yay! Update! :bounce :D

Uh-oh, Emms, sweetie, I can't take the suspence & worry any more - what is wrong with Willow? Because this...
She was breathing heavily and finding it hard to catch her breath. Willow could feel her heart fluttering in her chest and the sensation was making her a little light-headed.
...does not sound good. :paranoid

Emms, you seem to have a tendancy, in your fics, to have Willow and Tara not talk properly about important stuff together. Oh, that's not a criticism, just something I've noticed. :)
She wouldn't tell Tara though, it was probably nothing and she didn't want to worry her wife unnecessarily.
Surely Willow knows that Tara is aware that there's something wrong? & she must also know that Tara is worrying about her, whether that worry is necessary or not?

So, Sammy has her powers back huh? :hmm Does this mean that there's gonna be some big bad magic-ness? :paranoid & who was the older woman? Is she friend or foe? I'm assumming friend, otherwise why would she give Sammy her powers back? :hmm I'm looking forward to learning more about that particular development.

Sammy was so cute looking in the mirror to see if she still looked the same.
Samantha took in the sight of her pajama's and as she looked at herself the realization that her pajamas were not of the matching variety hit her with such a suddenness that she almost had to giggle. Sam decided she didn't care about the state of her attire; she liked them that way, so that was the way they would stay.
That was adorable, I loved it. :) & the thing about her hair cut & how she'd not wanted to have it cut but that she's used to it now, that was cute too.

Samantha began to cry. She couldn't help it, she didn't want to be different; she wanted to be the same as she had always been. Samantha stood there crying silently until an audible sob escaped from her lungs.
That image just about broke my heart :cry Poor Sammy, I just wanted to wrap her in a safe little hug.

This...
"I didn't know preschool babies got homework." Dresden said

& this...
"Here Sam. I saw this upstairs and I thought it looked like baby homework."
...certainly rang true - big brothers can be so mean sometimes.

Wouldn't you like to see grandma and grandpa more often?"

Samantha nodded carefully. She would like to see her grandfather everyday, but she really didn't care if she saw Sheila anymore.
Very cute :D You can't really blame Sammy for not wanting to see so much of Sheila.

Well, I'm gonna stop babbling now, I look forward to more sweetie. :)

Hugs
Jeanne

ugh, Dresden's such a pre-teen, but i love him anyway!!!
Sam's dream was weird...I assuming that was her magic that she got back, but who was it that gave it to her? Mim? some unkown good person? a bad person? u got me all curious, and now i'm anxious for the next update...which i guess is the point...so i guess congratulations are in order, but now i have to anxiously await the next update :sob

************************************************************************

Willow eyed the painted green walls of the examination room while she waited for Dr. Rice to return. She looked down at her watch and noted the time. He'd been gone for nearly fifteen minutes, leaving Willow to twiddle her thumbs while he disappeared down that big black hole doctors seemed to get sucked into whenever they left the room.
She liked Dr. Rice but she didn't like going to the doctor. Her job required that she spend her days in doctors' offices; all that forced time spent smelling antiseptic and listening to the drone of hundreds of doctors' voices had worn on her sensibilities over the years. So now, spending any length of time there when it wasn't mandatory felt like working overtime without pay. She'd been very lucky with the children in that they didn't get sick very often. The door opened suddenly and Willow jumped, startled by the intrusion.

"I'm sending you to a cardiologist."

"What?" Willow could feel her throat constricting. She couldn't need to see the cardiologist, because that would mean that there was something wrong with her. And there was nothing wrong with her.

Dr. Rice picked the clipboard up off the examination table. He ran his pen down the list written on the sheet of paper. "Let's see…you're experiencing shortness of breath and heart palpitations." Dr. Rice looked over his glasses at Willow. "Isn't that what you said?"

"Yes but…when I said palpitation, what I really meant was "flutter". You know...flutter, like beautiful butterfly wings…?" Willow was trying to remain calm, but it was apparent that she wasn't going to joke her way out of this. "It really was more of a flutter…" Willow could tell she looked worried.

"Ahhhh a flutter? Well if that's all it was, everything's fine then."

"Really?" Willow was hopeful.

"No."

Dr. Rice took a pen from the breast pocket of his white jacket. Willow could see the pen moving vigorously across the tablet…She held the faintest hope that he was doodling. He wasn't.

"I'm sending you to see Dr. Litchman over at Sunnydale General. He's a good friend of mine and the best in the field."

Dr. Rice held out the slip of paper and Willow grasped it hesitantly. All she could think about was Tara and the kids, and how she was going to tell them about all this. Tara would be so worried and Willow didn't want to do that to her.

"This could be potentially serious Willow. I want you to see Litchman in the next couple days. No buts about it. Is that clear?"

Willow nodded, but she felt blank inside. Well this is it. She thought to herself. It wasn't even noon and she already had it, whatever it was.

*****************************************
"Tare...?" Willow sat down next to Tara on the couch. Their shoulders touched and Willow wanted to cry. She didn't want to have to tell Tara about what the doctor told her that afternoon.

"Hmm?" Tara looked up from the book she was reading. The kids were upstairs playing, quietly for once so Tara had decided to take advantage of the peaceful moment and catch up on a few volumes of magical text that Anya had loaned her from the Magic Box's loft library. But there was something in Willow's voice that demanded attention, so she closed the book and turned her body to face her wife. The look on Willow's face was that of forced light-heartedness. "Is there something on your mind baby?" Tara asked, tucking a stray strand of hair behind Willow's ear.

"Lets go out tonight...just the two of us. Okay?" Willow forced a smile while her fingers tapped nervously against the couch cushion.

"What about the kids?" Tara was beginning to feel nervous. She wished Willow would tell her what was going on, but she didn't want to push because she sensed that Willow was trying.

"We'll call Anya, she'll be happy to come over and sit with Sammy and Dres…."

"Okay sweetie." Tara let out a breath and leaning forward, she placed a kiss on Willow's lips. She let her lips linger there momentarily before drawing back. Willow was looking at her seriously.

********************************************
"Mom?"

"What is it buddy?" Willow turned her head to view her son who had come up behind her. She had busied herself with clearing the kids' dinner dishes to help take her mind off her visit to the doctor's office earlier that morning. And It was working too…she could feel her anxiety easing up with each dish she dunked into the sudsy hot water.

"I need something that's going to put hair on my chest. Can I have a paper route?"

"The mortality rate of the paper boys in Sunnydale isn't very good Dres...You'd make a perfect bedtime snack for some of the paler locals." Willow said, running the plate she was washing under the stream of water.

"How will I ever become a man?"

"I think the natural aging process will take care of the manly chest hair. You've been talking to Grandpa Ira haven't you?" Willow stopped washing the dishes to face her son. She wasn't overly surprised that they were having this conversation. Maybe she and Tara were being overprotective but she just couldn't see sending their 12-year-old son outside with a bike load of papers before the sun was even up.

"Can I walk peoples dogs?"

"No." Willow crossed her arms across her chest as she waited patiently for Dresden's next suggestion.

"Can I have a lemonade stand?"

Willow thought about this for a moment. She weighed the pros and cons before answering. He would be in bright daylight with no chances of vampires or other nightly menaces...but then again there would be strangers. "Do you really want a lemonade stand Dres?"

"Well...no. But if it's all I can get, I'll take it. "

"Alright. As long as you run it by mama first." Dresden looked excited for the first time in what seemed like ages. Willow smiled as he turned to hurriedly retreat before she changed her mind. "Stay away from the magic supplies when mixing it up. I don't ' want any funny business. Lemons, sugar and water...no eye of newt or anything spongy and porous. Are we clear?" Willow called after him.

"As glass."

"Okay. Then, you're in business."

"Great!" he called out from the dining room.

"Can I help?" Willow heard Samantha ask eagerly from her place at the counter. She'd waited to hear the verdict before adding her enthusiasm into the mix. Samantha followed her brother into the dining room.

**************************************************
"Xander, why do you smell like you just took a bath in a tub of Jiffy Pop?" Willow asked, sniffing the air around her best friend. She was glad that he had come with Anya tonight; it would be good for Dresden to be around a male influence for a change. She knew that Dresden admired Xander and liked being around him, so she couldn't help but be grateful to Xander for coming.

"Maybe because I possess the culinary skills of a caveman." Xander propped his arm against the doorframe, while he held the bowl of popcorn between his arm and chest.

"He doesn't know how to work the microwave," Anya explained from kitchen. She came to stand beside her husband.

"Well...there are so many buttons...." Xander smiled at his wife as he popped a handful of the snack into his mouth.

"He defrosted when he should have popped," Anya said smugly.

"Thanks for babysitting, Anya..." Tara smiled warmly at the ex vengeance demon.

"Sure. I'm expecting Karmic retribution any moment now. Possibly in the form of cash or expensive jewelry. That reminds me...you are planning on paying me for this right?"

"That's nice..." Willow took Tara's hand. "You ready , Tara?"

"Did you notice the way she completely ignored my demands for money?" Anya said loudly to Xander and then spoke to Willow and Tara, "When will you be coming back?"

"Why...? You're not planning on letting them watch the exorcist again are you?" Willow looked suspiciously over at her best friend's wife.

"NO!...well, only the segments where she speaks Latin...I don’t see what the big deal is, it's very educational."

"NO TV tonight Anya," Willow warned.

"Okay worry warts...go...enjoy your date."

Willow and Tara found themselves being pushed out the front door, literally. And before they could say one word, the door was shut in their faces.

"Good god I thought they'd never leave!" came Anya's muffled voice from behind the wooden door.

Tara giggled at the woman's loudly spoken, yet muffled words. She tried to get Willow to see the humor but the redhead was having no part of it and was looking as serious as ever.

"We are standing right here Anya! We can still hear you," Willow said. She was miffed at Anya's rudeness but she was more worried about what would happen later that evening after dinner. Willow was having second thoughts about saying anything about it to Tara at all. She had been trying to talk herself out of telling Tara all evening, but she knew deep down that she couldn't keep what was happening to her a secret. Willow took Tara's hand as they made their way to the car. She'd tell Tara, they'd go to the cardiologist together on Wednesday and everything would turn out fine in the end...just like in the movies...

A cardiologist? Not good, well it could be good if nothing is physically wrong. :-D Still hoping it has something to do with Sam's visit in the garden. I like how you ended the chapter before Willow told Tara about having to go to the doctor, ya lil' devil. :devilish

Update :bounce :D

Hey Emms :wave

Uh-oh, poor Willow, I do hope it's nothing serious. :paranoid

"Yes but…when I said palpitation, what I really meant was "flutter". You know...flutter, like beautiful butterfly wings…?"
Very cute babble, but Willow's fear of what might be is palpable & makes my heart ache for her. :aww

I'm glad that Willow's decided to tell Tara what's going on now, although I do wish she'd chosen to say something sooner so that Tara could have been there to ease her fears when she saw Dr Rice.

How cute was Dresden wanting to 'become a man'? Just adorable :)

"I need something that's going to put hair on my chest.

"How will I ever become a man?"

"I think the natural aging process will take care of the manly chest hair.

That was the cutest & funniest exchange ever :)

Anya & Xander were just perfect for some, much needed, comic relief in this update.
The convo about Xander's inability to use the microwave (nice reference to 'Restless' there); Anya's demand for payment (& a nice reference to 'Made to Love You' too) & displeasure at having her demand ignored; then Willow & Tara being pushed out of the door & Anya's statement about how she thought they'd never leave. :lol
All wonderfully simple & hilarious :D

I look forward (with nervous trepidation) to the conversation between Willow & Tara and also, to the visit to the cardiologist. I do hope everything will turn out fine, but, I have a feeling it won't. :paranoid

Hugs

ooo no no no no no this can't be happening please say it isn't true....please please... I thought maybe Willow was pregnant or something but this is just horror... oooo god I mean goddess.

Breath breath sigh I'm trying to be normal before I'm going to reply ok ...normal again.

Well it was a great update great written great idea but!!! yeah but... still sadness sadness... could you warn me the next time I need tissues..I normally can't read those kind of updates... I want them to be happy and in love and well everything...sigh.

I'm with Willow 300% uggh the smell is just wwweyak and the waiting at the doc's and latter at the cardiologist isn't much fun belief me I know.

Well there where a few funny moments and one big evil one...I know I don't have to tell you which one...THE END yezz woman :lol

funny moments:

"Yes but…when I said palpitation, what I really meant was "flutter". You know...flutter, like beautiful butterfly wings…?"

"Ahhhh a flutter? Well if that's all it was, everything's fine then."

"Really?" Willow was hopeful.

"No."

Tara and Willow on the couch could have been so romantic with red fruit drinks and candles and stuff if it wasn't for the bad tension and upcoming talk.

"Why...? You're not planning on letting them watch the exorcist again are you?" Willow looked suspiciously over at her best friend's wife.

"NO!...well, only the segments where she speaks Latin...I don’t see what the big deal is, it's very educational."

That one was so lmao.

ooo and I nearly forgot..... Willow didn't responded on Anya's money asking...that means she is so scared and nervous... so many things going on in that little head of hers.

I really love the way you use real life moments like... when willow was at the doc the first thing that went through her mind was Tara and the kids. She loves them and is so protective over them I really love that Willow. And Yes Tara will be worried but I know she will take care of Willow... nurse Tara ;-)... a hot caring lady mine kind of girl.

I think I got everything :eyebrow maybe not but I'm going to leave it with this short reply.

Take care Em

I am so excited! I am new here - and there are so many stories on this site. I get so happy when I find a new one that I like. Yay! I found a new story to read!

Now I have to go run off to read "A Different Life", but I wanted to stop and say how much I am enjoying this fic. Thanks for writing. I, of course, am *completely* agitated about willow's cardiac consult. I hope Tara isn't too mad that Willow kept the original DR's appt a secret. Bad Will. Come clean!

Hey. Thanks for writing. I really love your stories!

Finding this one made my day!

Welcome DB I hope you will have lots of fun on this board like we do.

=====================

I'm not silly!!!! I'm just in a good mood... :pinky

Come on you like it when we beg...ooooo pllllleeeease Em pleeeaaase... I know you can't resist the Henster charm.

But seriously you should update this story ( when you have time off course).... You should give Irene73 / Dianneswillowtree / DB and all the others something wonderful romantic to read.

PS could you please skip the hurt part...you know giving birth AU..just skip that. Just put the baby in front of there bedroom door and ooooo look Willow a baby. I have watched way to much TV birth programme and they all look painful...so please skip it.
